My Library By Right

CILIP is launching a new campaign, My Library By Right, to champion the public’s rights to quality library services. The campaign has been launched in December 2015 and continue into 2016. It is focused on public library services in England.

Duties under legislation such as the 1964 Public Libraries & Museums Act are not widely understood. Campaign activities will include positive engagement with Government, advocating for our rights, strengthening the case for modern library services, celebrating libraries, and rallying the public and profession behind our right to libraries.

The campaign will call for:

• The public’s rights to libraries to be recognised and respected
• Public libraries to be treated as the statutory services they are
• DCMS to carry out their legal duties under the 1964 Act
• Statutory guidance for local authorities on their duties under the 1964 Act from DCMS

Through the campaign CILIP is looking to engage with the public, supporters, Government and Local Authorities.
