KQ Data Social with UCL Grand Challenges

9 July 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

- Free

Launching at London Data WeekKQ Data Socials is a new forum linking data scientists, researchers, and tech developers in the Knowledge Quarter with community groups in Camden and Islington to solve data-driven challenges and foster collaboration for social good.

If you are a data scientist, researcher, developer, or a community lead interested in citizen science and the use of data and technology for social impact, join us for an informal evening of drinks, light bites and lightning talks, during which we’ll hear about some of the interesting and impactful data science taking place in the Knowledge Quarter.

Lightning Talks with UCL

Our first KQ Data Social is delivered in partnership with University College London.

Professor Allison Littlejohn will introduce UCL’s Grand Challenge programme, Data-Empowered Societies.

Professor Littlejohn is Pro-Vice Provost for Data Empowered Societies (a role she shares with Professor James Hetherington), a programme that supports academic-led interdisciplinary collaborations in the use of data and technology to solve global challenges, while ensuring fairness, inclusion, and societal benefit.

Professor Littlejohn will introduce a number of lightning talks from recent grant recipients from the programme, including:

  • Interactive Citizen Science for Data-Empowered Decision Making: developing solutions for the growing burden of plastic waste
  • Map & Drill: Crowdmapping and Crowdfunding for Smarter Water Wells in Ethiopia
  • Empowering Inuit communities to map their own land
  • Mapping the unseen: recovering living heritage and supporting community-led relocation through data-driven approaches
  • Data and Lived Experience: Evaluation of Newham’s ‘People Powered Places’ Participatory Budgeting Programme
  • Data-Empowered Evacuation: Co-Designing Inclusive Emergency Response System with Disabled People and Fire Rescue Services
  • Incorporating Indigenous Ecological Knowledge in AI-assisted Bioacoustic Data Analysis for Biodiversity Monitoring

Following the lightning talks, attendees can enjoy an informal networking reception – an inclusive space where you can make new connections with other Knowledge Quarter partners and local organisations, particularly those with data gaps and data-informed challenges.
