Knowledge Quarter launches five-year strategy to drive innovation and inclusive growth

15 July 2026

Knowledge Quarter London: Leading Innovation sets out five priorities for collaboration, investment, advocacy, place and inclusion across one of London’s most significant innovation districts.

The Knowledge Quarter has today launched Knowledge Quarter London: Leading Innovation, a new five-year strategy setting out how its partnership of more than 80 organisations will strengthen collaboration, attract investment and ensure that the benefits of growth reach communities across Camden and Islington.

The strategy establishes five priorities for the partnership and the wider Knowledge Quarter area: Convene and Collaborate; Invest and Innovate; Champion and Advocate; Place and Purpose; and Include and Empower.

Its launch follows the recognition of the Knowledge Quarter in the London Growth Plan as one of the capital’s most significant areas of growth. The strategy sets out the Knowledge Quarter’s ambition to build on this position, support the growth the UK needs and ensure that innovation delivers lasting social and economic benefits.

Jodie Eastwood, Chief Executive of the Knowledge Quarter, said:

“The Knowledge Quarter brings together one of the densest concentrations of knowledge anywhere in the world. However, density alone is not what makes this area special. Its real strength comes from what happens when organisations across science, culture, technology and education choose to work together.

Knowledge Quarter London: Leading Innovation sets out how the partnership will turn that collaboration into lasting impact over the next five years. It is a plan to support the growth the UK needs whilst ensuring that its benefits reach the communities around us.

“The future is made here, and we intend to make it together.”

The Knowledge Quarter covers a compact area spanning Camden and Islington, including St Pancras, King’s Cross, Bloomsbury and Euston. The district contains more than 18,000 knowledge workers per square kilometre and is home to over 20 universities and higher education institutions, with a combined student population of more than 100,000.

These institutions produce over 30,000 graduates each year and attract more than £1.15 billion in research income. The area is also home to 176 life sciences organisations employing over 60,000 people, alongside cultural institutions such as the British Library and the British Museum, which collectively welcome more than eight million visitors each year.

The concentration of knowledge, expertise and talent is already delivering significant results. Up to 93% of university research conducted in the area is rated world-leading or internationally excellent. Scientists based in the district have won at least three Nobel Prizes in the past decade, whilst more than 725 venture and growth companies employ over 33,000 people.

The five priorities within Knowledge Quarter London: Leading Innovation are:

  • Convene and Collaborate: bringing together members, stakeholders and communities to encourage dialogue, build trust and unlock the partnership’s collective potential.
  • Invest and Innovate: making the case for long-term investment in the spaces, infrastructure, talent and emerging industries that enable innovation to take root and scale.
  • Champion and Advocate: strengthening the Knowledge Quarter’s position as one of the world’s leading innovation districts and speaking clearly on the issues that matter to its members and communities.
  • Place and Purpose: shaping a dynamic, inclusive and sustainable innovation district through net zero development, accessible public spaces and a built environment that supports creativity, connection and community.
  • Include and Empower: championing equity, representation and accessibility, removing structural barriers and enabling people from every background to participate and thrive.

Over the next five years, the Knowledge Quarter will work with its members, local authorities, communities and wider stakeholders to turn these priorities into action. This will include creating clearer pathways into the knowledge economy, opening up opportunities for young people and ensuring that the benefits of discovery, innovation and investment are shared more widely.

Through Knowledge Quarter London: Leading Innovation, the Knowledge Quarter will continue to make the district a place where London’s future is imagined, created and shared.
