Crick Discovery Day

17 06 2017 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

- Free

Pop into the Crick this summer for a day of discovery. Meet our friendly scientists, find out about the latest life-changing research and get hands-on with fun activities for all the family. Featuring fascinating talks, interactive workshops and the chance to peek behind the scenes at the Crick.

Activities include:

You are Electric: Make a friend’s arm twitch using nothing but the power of your brain and a couple of electrodes.

Microscopes to Kaleidoscopes: Make a fluorescent kaleidoscope inspired by incredible microscopy images taken at the Crick.

Body Building: Explore how zebrafish, frogs, mice, chicks and humans turn from a single fertilized egg cell into complex organisms.

Beating Cancer Sooner: Get hands on and explore how research at the Crick is helping us to understand how cancers start, spread and develop.

Photobooth: Don a lab coat and get your photo taken in our virtual lab

Science Buskers: Meet our scientists as they roam about the building with interactive demos to amaze and inspire

Talks programme:

12.00 Gut Feelings: the world of the second brain. Leave the poo taboo at home and discover the nervous system in your gut with PhD student Sarah McCallum.

13.00 Designing a building for discovery. Wayne McKiernan, Director of PLP Architecture, reveals how the Crick was designed for bringing together some of science’s greatest minds.

14.00 Cancer evolution through space and time. Species are not the only thing to evolve, cancers do too. Dr Samra Turalijc explains why this is a major problem for treating the disease.

15.00 Discovery: a journey into the unknown. Dr Barry Thompson takes a look at 10 major scientific discoveries, and how research at the Crick may change people’s lives

The Discovery Day is part of the MRC (Medical Research Council) Festival of Medical Research, 17-25 June, in which MRC funded units, centres and institutes showcase and discuss their work through events and activities across the UK and beyond.

The Discovery Day is free to attend and open to everyone. Drop in anytime to enjoy the activities and demos and meet our scientists in our public spaces. Some activities will run with timed slots which can be booked on the day. Sign up to our mailing list to stay up to date with the latest Discovery Day news.

Building tours

We will run a limited number of guided tours of the building during the Discovery Day. These must be booked in advance. We regret that we cannot accommodate under 16s on tours due to health and safety restrictions.
