SUMMARY:Cloud Nine Festival
DESCRIPTION:West Euston Partnership\, Fantasy High Street and Old Diorama Arts Centre present: \nA free one day family event using arts to celebrate 40 years of arts\, architecture and community life in Euston and King’s Cross. \nThe Cloud Nine Festival is returning to Cumberland Market after the highly successful inaugural festival on the site last year. Created and delivered by a partnership of three local organisations: West Euston Partnership\, Fantasy High Street and Old Diorama Arts Centre\, the festival will once again offer a day of free arts activities\, performances and workshops to local residents and other members of the community. \n2017 marks an important anniversary for many local organisations\, including West Euston Partnership which will be celebrating its 25th birthday and Diorama Arts Centre which will be turning 35 years old. So Cloud Nine’s theme this year is celebrating local heritage\, the community and the changing face of Euston and King’s Cross over the last 40 years. Interactive art installations will invite visitors to share stories about where they live and play games; our free arts and crafts workshops will run throughout the event and are suitable for families and children of all ages and our performance stage will include dance and music from local community groups. There will also be hot and cold food\, a football tournament and local organisations will provide a range of interactive stalls remembering the past\, cherishing the present and imagining what the future of our community could look like. Click here to find out more. \nKnowledge Quarter partner Bennetts Associates will be running a Building Tomorrow workshop – an interactive installation tent where children can build houses and neighbourhoods with Lego blocks and design future communities. \n#Cloud9Camden \nWest Euston Partnership: www.westeustonpartnership.org\nOld Diorama Arts Centre: www.diorama-arts.org.uk\nFantasy High Street: fantasyhighstreet.org.uk \nPhoto Credit: ©Lucy Morris

Identity\, collaboration\, conflict resolution\, community\, alternative realities\, technological innovation\, social issues\, the environment\, activism\, crossings – just some of the contexts of the work on show in Creative Unions. \nClick here to find out more about the designers exhibiting.

SUMMARY:Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan (Exhibition runs until 10 September 2017)
DESCRIPTION:The first UK exhibition of illustrations for classic sci-fi anime films\, including Ghost in the Shell \nThis is the UK’s first exhibition of architectural backdrops from classic anime films. It features over 100 exquisite technical drawings and watercolour illustrations from some of the most influential productions in the genre’s 1990s heyday\, including Production I.G’s artwork for Ghost in the Shell. \nThe artists were tasked with creating a universe for the director. Their fictional worlds reflected real-life concerns over ruthless urban development and erosion of identity\, mirroring the films’ narratives and giving the backgrounds a crucial role to play. Their work has had a defining influence on the style of anime we think of as typical today. \nThe show includes Hiromasa Ogura’s watercolour paintings for Ghost in the Shell\, an anime epic that informed pioneering sci-fi works such as The Matrix and Avatar. Inspired by Asia’s emerging megacities and based on photographs of Hong Kong\, Ogura’s work depicts the striking contrast between a derelict Chinese town and looming\, faceless skyscrapers. \nPencil drawings by Takashi Watabe – one of the most important Japanese illustrators of his generation – for 2008’s sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence also feature. His meticulously realistic style has become a hallmark of Japanese anime films as a whole. \nThe exhibition also includes work from Patlabor: The Movie (1989) and Metropolis (2001)\, by Mamoru Oshii and Atsushi Takeuchi. \nSince the success of Akira (1988) and Ghost in the Shell\, Japanese anime films have been at the heart of global pop culture. A live action remake of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson was released on 31 March 2017. \nIn association with Les Jardins des Pilotes and Tchoban Foundation – Museum for Architectural Drawing\, Berlin. \nThe exhibition runs until 10 September 2017\, please go to the House of Illustration website to purchase tickets. \nCost: £7.50\, adult ticket

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Hokusai at the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave \nExperience the beautiful and sublime work of one of Japan’s greatest artists. \nKatsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely regarded as Japan’s most famous and influential artist. He produced works of astonishing quality right up until his death at the age of 90. This new exhibition will lead you on an artistic journey through the last 30 years of Hokusai’s life – a time when he produced some of his most famous masterpieces. \nThroughout the exhibition\, outstanding examples of Hokusai’s work will show the artist’s creative breadth and depth. A selection of superb landscapes is introduced with the iconic Great Wave – itself part of a print series of views of Mt Fuji. Intimate domestic scenes capture fleeting moments in private lives. Exquisite depictions of flora and fauna display an innate skill in representing the natural world. The artist’s imagination is given full rein in the portrayal of supernatural creatures such as ghosts and deities. Through all of these works\, explore Hokusai’s personal beliefs and gain a fascinating insight into the artist’s spiritual and artistic quest in his later years. \nThe exhibition will include prints\, paintings and illustrated books\, many of which are on loan from Japan\, Europe and the USA. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these extraordinary works together. \nPlease note for conservation reasons there will be a rotation of about half the artworks halfway through the exhibition run. Some works can only be displayed for a limited period of time due to their light sensitivity. The new works will substitute similar ones and will not affect the exhibition’s story. To facilitate the rotation\, the exhibition will be closed between 3 and 6 July. \n\nRegistration: Please click here to book your place.

Austerity policies\, increasing social inequality\, the general assault on collective policies of social welfare\, the changes imposed on health care\, the needs of an ageing population\, the increasing worldwide visibility of violence (domestic violence\, rape as a weapon of war\, ‘honour’ killing\, female genital mutilation)\, all of these intensifying trends are placing women under renewed pressure and are heightening the need for women to reflect\, speak and find new means of expression. At the same time\, the rise of populism in the context of Brexit in the UK and the election of Donald Trump in the US\, with the growing racism that has accompanied both\, are contributing to a climate where bigotry and misogyny are granted new permission to parade themselves in the media and on the streets. Opening and closing the conference with poetry and literary readings by renowned creative writers from across the globe\, our aim is to demonstrate the central role of cultural expression in representing\, illuminating and resisting this new climate in which women find themselves today. \nThe conference aims to address these issues\, and their implications for feminist thought\, activism and creativity\, and in relation to public policy in the UK and globally. To that end\, we are especially committed to fostering a unique atmosphere of dialogue and exchange which will cross the boundaries between scholars\, practitioners and literary writers\, between generations of feminists\, across different ethnic and cultural groups\, between the trans-movement and feminism\, and between critical thinking and the demand for social change.  The Conference will therefore gather together academics\, literary scholars and poets\, professionals\, policy makers and feminist activists in the realm of health care\, education\, domestic labour and sexual violence. It will also be interdisciplinary\, working across sociology and social history\, economics\, politics\, psychoanalysis\, sexuality and gender studies\, literature\, film and culture. Internationally renowned writers and thinkers such as NourbeSe Philip\, Jackie Kay\, Leila Ahmed and Drucilla Cornell will bring to the conference voices out of which we will aim to establish the forward looking nature of modern feminist expression and thought. \nKeynote Speakers: \n\nPatience Agbabi (Poet\, performer\, mentor and Fellow\, Oxford Brookes University)\nLeila Ahmed (Harvard University\, via Skype)\nDrucilla Cornell (Rutgers University)\nM. SUMMARY:T.E.N.S.E Exhibition Central Saint Martins Innovation Management 2017
DESCRIPTION:T.E.N.S.E – Temporary Environment for Navigating Systems of Emergence \nA divisive world. Balancing paradoxes in political\, economic\, social\, and environmental spheres is no easy feat. There are no singular anecdotes for these macro-level tensions\, but managing the emergences created from these crucibles is the role of an innovation manager. \nWithin this year’s exhibition\, Innovation managers investigate universal paradoxes which give rise to Tensions; Tensions which individuals and organisations confront everyday. Profit//Preservation\, Order//Chaos\, Physical//Digital\, Now//Future. \nCHAOS AND ORDER \nRapid development in today’s world forces us to challenge the existing order. Industries are constantly evolving\, and a select few of these organisations spark revolution\, corroding traditional hierarchy. In this era\, companies can employ survival strategies by toying with chaos to construct a new order to champion tomorrow. \nDIGITAL AND PHYSICAL \nWe are witnessing emergent technologies and practices that are enabling and empowering people to create whole new value chains. Collisions herald new realities\, presenting opportunities and threats for both organisations and individuals. While new technologies commence\, the physical remains\, constructing a variety of new mediums to continue practice. We are posed with questions on how to embrace these emergences\, and reflect on their necessity. \nNOW AND THE FUTURE \nTechnology allows for greater accessibility to information. Modern day documentation and archiving is a cherished activity of this generation. We believe we are constructing more informed futures. Time is losing its value\, making it hard for individuals and organisations to understand how to live in present and prepare for the future. Identities are at stake. \nPROFIT AND PRESERVATION \nHuman nature has a long history with greed. Within hyper-capitalism profit and success are monetary; other values are often undermined. The discourse on profit is being explored\, with a focus on inclusivity and awareness of the world-at-large. Globalism can work as a benefit and a detriment to preserving world resources. Can we intrinsically motivate organisations and ourselves to compromise? Do we need to? \nThese tensions\, as we understand\, will never disappear but continue to form an uncomfortable state of being ‘in-between’. Innovation Managers are the professionals crazy enough to try to make sense of the uncertainty within those grey areas. \nThe class of MA Innovation Management 2017 would like to invite you to: \nT.E.N.S.E Exhibition\nWed 21st – 25th June\nWed – Thurs: 12.00 – 20.00\nFri: 12.00 – 15.00\nSat – Sun: 12.00 – 17.00 \nWe open our doors to you. \n_____________________ \nThe MA Innovation Management Degree Show final event T.E.N.S.E sessions on Friday 23 June 18.00 – 21.30 at Central Saint Martins. Four inspiring guest speakers will tell their stories and bring the degree show concept and work to life. Attendants will have the opportunity to network and socialise with a diverse group of individuals. Additionally\, get to know Innovation Managers better and a greater understanding of the breadth of the course. \nFor more information please visit: tensebymaim.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:The Academic Book of the Future - Report Launch
DESCRIPTION:Is academic book production outstripping demand? Can library budgets keep pace with the ever growing book production? Will academic books become a new frontier of Open Access? Are we ready to move away from the physical codex? Will digital book formats transform arts and humanities research? Are our discovery\, access and preservation systems fit for the future? \nFind out more and join us for a continuing debate. \nThe Academic Book of the Future project was a two-year research project\, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Library\, focusing on the current and possible future states of academic books in the changing academic\, publishing and library environments. This event will launch the project’s final policy report by Dr Michael Jubb. We will also reflect on two years of research and engagement activities\, led by Dr Samantha Rayner (UCL) as Principal Investigator\, with the Co-Investigators Nick Canty (UCL)\, Professor Marilyn Deegan (KCL) and Professor Simon Tanner (KCL)\, and including numerous contributions across academic\, librarian\, publishing and bookseller communities. \nThe event will be introduced by Professor Andrew Thompson\, CEO of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. \nThe project team will be joined by Professor Geoffrey Crossick\, Dr Frances Pinter\, Professor Shearer West and the British Library’s Chief Librarian\, Caroline Brazier\, for a panel discussion on the issues raised in the report. \nRegistration: please click here to book your place.
