DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr Jacqueline Riding\, Basic Instincts explores Georgian attitudes to love\, desire and female respectability through the radical paintings of Joseph Highmore.  \nA highly successful artist and Governor of London’s Foundling Hospital\, Joseph Highmore (1692-1780) is best known as a portrait painter of the Georgian middle class. However\, during the 1740s his art radically shifted\, reflecting his engagement with the work of the new Foundling Hospital and its mission to support desperate and abused women. Highmore’s involvement with the Hospital sparked engagement with issues around women’s vulnerability to sexual assault and society’s unwillingness to support them\, culminating in a work of exceptional power\, The Angel of Mercy (c.1746). \nBasic Instincts is the first major Highmore exhibition for 50 years and explores this decade of disruptive social commentary in his art. Amongst the works on display are four paintings from a series of twelve\, inspired by Samuel Richardson’s international bestseller\, Pamela\, or Virtue Rewarded\, explicitly making reference to the abuse and sexual violence at the core of the novel. On public display in the UK for the first time as part of Basic Instincts is a remarkable painting that still retains the power to shock. The Angel of Mercy depicts a desperate mother in the act of killing her baby\, with the distant Foundling Hospital presented as the alternative. DESCRIPTION:FutureLearn\, the leading social learning platform\, is delighted to support National Coding Week’s goal to give adults the opportunity to learn some digital skills with a beginners coding class for adults. \nWho should come? \nThis evening class is aimed at adults who are complete beginners to coding; no experience is required. With an emphasis on giving practical coding experience\, the session will be focused on getting you to code right there and then with the goal being to produce your own webpage by the end of the two hour session. \nWhat to expect? \nExpect a highly interactive session with group and individual work\, as well as plenty of coding pros on hand for advice and help on following all steps throughout the two hour session. First\, you’ll get to see the code behind your favourite websites and understand how that code can be manipulated. DESCRIPTION:West Euston Partnership\, Fantasy High Street and Old Diorama Arts Centre present: \nA free one day family event using arts to celebrate 40 years of arts\, architecture and community life in Euston and King’s Cross. \nThe Cloud Nine Festival is returning to Cumberland Market after the highly successful inaugural festival on the site last year. Created and delivered by a partnership of three local organisations: West Euston Partnership\, Fantasy High Street and Old Diorama Arts Centre\, the festival will once again offer a day of free arts activities\, performances and workshops to local residents and other members of the community. \n2017 marks an important anniversary for many local organisations\, including West Euston Partnership which will be celebrating its 25th birthday and Diorama Arts Centre which will be turning 35 years old. So Cloud Nine’s theme this year is celebrating local heritage\, the community and the changing face of Euston and King’s Cross over the last 40 years. Interactive art installations will invite visitors to share stories about where they live and play games; our free arts and crafts workshops will run throughout the event and are suitable for families and children of all ages and our performance stage will include dance and music from local community groups. DESCRIPTION:The Francis Crick Institute and 1A Arts present the premiere of a short film made by local young people \nHolborn Community Association’s 1A Arts team and the Francis Crick Institute are delighted to invite Knowledge Quarter partners\, staff and friends to a special drinks reception at the premiere screening of a short film made by local young people. \nThroughout the summer (on weekends and school holidays)\, a group of young people aged 14-18 years old took part in 1A Arts’ summer filmmaking project. \nInspired by research taking place in the Crick’s Polarity and Patterning Networks Laboratory\, the young filmmakers created a production company – Kaleiko – then wrote\, directed and produced a short film. \nThe film will be shown for the first time in the Crick’s brand new\, state-of-the-art auditorium on Thursday 14th September. SUMMARY:Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan (Exhibition runs until 10 September 2017)
DESCRIPTION:The first UK exhibition of illustrations for classic sci-fi anime films\, including Ghost in the Shell \nThis is the UK’s first exhibition of architectural backdrops from classic anime films. It features over 100 exquisite technical drawings and watercolour illustrations from some of the most influential productions in the genre’s 1990s heyday\, including Production I.G’s artwork for Ghost in the Shell. \nThe artists were tasked with creating a universe for the director. Their fictional worlds reflected real-life concerns over ruthless urban development and erosion of identity\, mirroring the films’ narratives and giving the backgrounds a crucial role to play. Their work has had a defining influence on the style of anime we think of as typical today. \nThe show includes Hiromasa Ogura’s watercolour paintings for Ghost in the Shell\, an anime epic that informed pioneering sci-fi works such as The Matrix and Avatar. Inspired by Asia’s emerging megacities and based on photographs of Hong Kong\, Ogura’s work depicts the striking contrast between a derelict Chinese town and looming\, faceless skyscrapers. \nPencil drawings by Takashi Watabe – one of the most important Japanese illustrators of his generation – for 2008’s sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence also feature. His meticulously realistic style has become a hallmark of Japanese anime films as a whole. \nThe exhibition also includes work from Patlabor: The Movie (1989) and Metropolis (2001)\, by Mamoru Oshii and Atsushi Takeuchi. \nSince the success of Akira (1988) and Ghost in the Shell\, Japanese anime films have been at the heart of global pop culture. DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave \nExperience the beautiful and sublime work of one of Japan’s greatest artists. \nKatsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely regarded as Japan’s most famous and influential artist. He produced works of astonishing quality right up until his death at the age of 90. This new exhibition will lead you on an artistic journey through the last 30 years of Hokusai’s life – a time when he produced some of his most famous masterpieces. \nThroughout the exhibition\, outstanding examples of Hokusai’s work will show the artist’s creative breadth and depth. A selection of superb landscapes is introduced with the iconic Great Wave – itself part of a print series of views of Mt Fuji. Intimate domestic scenes capture fleeting moments in private lives. Exquisite depictions of flora and fauna display an innate skill in representing the natural world. The artist’s imagination is given full rein in the portrayal of supernatural creatures such as ghosts and deities. Through all of these works\, explore Hokusai’s personal beliefs and gain a fascinating insight into the artist’s spiritual and artistic quest in his later years. \nThe exhibition will include prints\, paintings and illustrated books\, many of which are on loan from Japan\, Europe and the USA. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these extraordinary works together. \nPlease note for conservation reasons there will be a rotation of about half the artworks halfway through the exhibition run. Some works can only be displayed for a limited period of time due to their light sensitivity. The new works will substitute similar ones and will not affect the exhibition’s story. DESCRIPTION:7th London School of Business and Management \nTeaching and Learning Conference 2017 \nThe annual London School of Business and Management Teaching and Learning Conference brings together established and emerging academics\, practitioners and policymakers interested in teaching and learning in a widening participation context. The 7th conference serves as an exploratory platform for sharing ideas\, research and experience with professionals from across the Higher Education sector. Additionally\, it offers great opportunities to extend professional networks\, forge new collaborations\, broaden core expertise and\, most importantly\, foster reflection on improving current practices of teaching and learning. \nThe programme of the conference will reflect the following theme: Taking Education Further! \nIt focuses on: \n\nStudents as Partners\nCurriculum Design and Innovation\nEducational Technology and Engagement\nEnterprise and Employability\nAssessment\n\nWith the launch of the TEF by HEFCE\, UK HE institutions are reflecting on their teaching practices to highlight the strengths of what they do and how they provide for and support their student populations. The Taking Education Further theme aims to tease out such reflections to celebrate the good practice and innovation across the sector and to give these a professional platform to be shared across the community. \nThis conference focuses on the extent to which educators and institutions must go to provide a rich student experience and an engaging and inclusive learning environment for all. DESCRIPTION:Street artist Ben Eine announced for a night of life drawing and live street art\ncurated by Skip Gallery founders Catherine Borowski and Lee Baker \nAfter the success of Skip Gallery’s launch and the upcoming David Shrigley exhibition\, co-founders Catherine Borowski and Lee Baker are fast becoming known for their unique low-fi take on the gallery experience. In latest news\, pioneering street artist and master of street typography Ben Eine has been announced for SKIP Night\, an evening of life drawing and live street art as part of Art Night 2017. \nSKIP Night will feature life drawing classes inside a closed skip situated in the playground of the Sir John Cass’s Foundation Primary School with classes taught by Draw Brighton founder\, Jake Spicer. Featuring a variety of models and poses\, the classes will encourage visitors to take up their pencils and sketch a spotlit life model from the intimate\, amphitheater style seating area inside the skip. \nThroughout the evening\, artist Ben Eine will create a live piece\, spraying the interior of the skip as well as appearing as a life model in a surprise time slot to be announced only on the evening itself. The skip will remain in situ post Art Night\, housing an exhibition by Ben Eine until 7th July. \nArt Night 2017 will take place throughout city’s East End during the night of Saturday 1 July. \nHailed as a pioneer of letterform street art\, Ben Eine began exploring the distinctions between street art and graffiti during his highly successful career as a renowned writer in the underground London graffiti scene.
