SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Anime Architecture at House of Illustration
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at House of Illustration. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive last chance look at Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan; House of Illustration’s blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan \nThis is the UK’s first ever exhibition of architectural backdrops from classic anime films. It features over 100 original technical drawings and watercolour illustrations from some of the most influential films in the genre’s 1990s heyday\, including Production I.G’s artwork for Ghost in the Shell. \nThese background artists were tasked with creating a universe for the director\, and their fictional\, future worlds reflected real-life concerns over Asia’s ruthless urban development. Their work has had a defining influence on the style of anime we think of as typical today. \n“A show full of glittering\, neon-lit cityscapes” says Time Out \nThe show includes Hiromasa Ogura’s watercolour paintings for Ghost in the Shell\, an anime epic that informed pioneering sci-fi works such as The Matrix and Avatar. Inspired by Asia’s emerging megacities and based on photographs of Hong Kong\, Ogura’s work depicts the striking contrast between a derelict Chinese town and looming\, faceless skyscrapers. \nTakashi Watabe’s meticulously realistic style has become a hallmark of Japanese anime films as a whole. We show his pencil drawings for 2008’s sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence\, as well as work from Patlabor: The Movie (1989) and Metropolis (2001)\, by Mamoru Oshii and Atsushi Takeuchi. \nRegistration: Please click here to book your place.

SUMMARY:Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan (Exhibition runs until 10 September 2017)
DESCRIPTION:The first UK exhibition of illustrations for classic sci-fi anime films\, including Ghost in the Shell \nThis is the UK’s first exhibition of architectural backdrops from classic anime films. It features over 100 exquisite technical drawings and watercolour illustrations from some of the most influential productions in the genre’s 1990s heyday\, including Production I.G’s artwork for Ghost in the Shell. \nThe artists were tasked with creating a universe for the director. Their fictional worlds reflected real-life concerns over ruthless urban development and erosion of identity\, mirroring the films’ narratives and giving the backgrounds a crucial role to play. Their work has had a defining influence on the style of anime we think of as typical today. \nThe show includes Hiromasa Ogura’s watercolour paintings for Ghost in the Shell\, an anime epic that informed pioneering sci-fi works such as The Matrix and Avatar. Inspired by Asia’s emerging megacities and based on photographs of Hong Kong\, Ogura’s work depicts the striking contrast between a derelict Chinese town and looming\, faceless skyscrapers. \nPencil drawings by Takashi Watabe – one of the most important Japanese illustrators of his generation – for 2008’s sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence also feature. His meticulously realistic style has become a hallmark of Japanese anime films as a whole. \nThe exhibition also includes work from Patlabor: The Movie (1989) and Metropolis (2001)\, by Mamoru Oshii and Atsushi Takeuchi. \nSince the success of Akira (1988) and Ghost in the Shell\, Japanese anime films have been at the heart of global pop culture. A live action remake of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson was released on 31 March 2017. \nIn association with Les Jardins des Pilotes and Tchoban Foundation – Museum for Architectural Drawing\, Berlin. \nThe exhibition runs until 10 September 2017\, please go to the House of Illustration website to purchase tickets. \nCost: £7.50\, adult ticket

DESCRIPTION:1895\, the trial of Oscar Wilde. 2017\, the pardoning of gay men by the ‘Alan Turing Law’. How far have we come in 122 years? \nPersonal testimony. Public protest. Art and culture. We tell the story of love\, legislative change and the battles for equality experienced by gay men and women in the UK. 50 years after the Sexual Offences Act partially decriminalised homosexuality\, our exhibition looks at the build up to this monumental step\, its impact\, and asks what challenges still remain. \nListen to oral histories. Explore Sarah Waters’s manuscript notebook for Tipping the Velvet. Take a closer look at the diary of Kenneth Williams. Film\, original manuscripts and rare printed items trace a history of troubles and triumphs for gay people. Other items on display include the 1957 Wolfenden Report\, the Gay Liberation Front Manifesto\, and vinyl from the Pet Shop Boys. \nHow have perceptions of homosexuality changed and what impact have they had in creating distinctive and dynamic gay identities in the UK? \nClick here for more information\, the exhibition runs until 19 September 2017. \n#BLGayUK

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter and Scene & Heard: A special performance of Writeback
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite Knowledge Quarter partners\, staff and friends to a special drinks reception and performance of Writeback by Scene & Heard. \nScene & Heard is a unique mentoring project that partners the inner-city children of Somers Town\, London with volunteer theatre professionals. It gives children intensive\, one-to-one adult attention\, enabling them to write plays which are then performed by professional actors. \nWriteback is Scene & Heard’s latest performance – the result of work from young writers and older Member playwrights who visited the Knowledge Quarter and its institutions as inspiration for their work. \nThe Writeback course was held at Knowledge Quarter partner The Foundling Museum and the final performance is a direct response to objects in the Collection and the story of the Foundling Hospital. \nwww.sceneandheard.org \n“If you are glum about the state of the world and haven’t laughed in weeks\, recover some hope by seeking out a performance from Scene and Heard. This Somers Town scheme gives intensive\, targeted help to children in difficulties. It increases confidence\, helps make strong relationships\, teaches team work and co-operation\, and brings out hidden creative potential. It commits to its members\, sticking with them through their school life and into young adulthood. It is effective and\, unlike other worthy interventions\, it comes with songs\, dances and jokes. It is huge fun for everyone involved – I think that is the secret of its success.” Dame Hilary Mantel\, Scene & Heard Patron \n“This is theatre of the highest quality: imaginative\, inspirational and above all huge fun” Michael Sheen\, Scene & Heard Patron \nRegistration: Please click here to book your place.

SUMMARY:Basic Instincts (Exhibition runs from 29 Sep 2017 — 07 Jan 2018)
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr Jacqueline Riding\, Basic Instincts explores Georgian attitudes to love\, desire and female respectability through the radical paintings of Joseph Highmore. \nA highly successful artist and Governor of London’s Foundling Hospital\, Joseph Highmore (1692-1780) is best known as a portrait painter of the Georgian middle class. However\, during the 1740s his art radically shifted\, reflecting his engagement with the work of the new Foundling Hospital and its mission to support desperate and abused women. Highmore’s involvement with the Hospital sparked engagement with issues around women’s vulnerability to sexual assault and society’s unwillingness to support them\, culminating in a work of exceptional power\, The Angel of Mercy (c.1746). \nBasic Instincts is the first major Highmore exhibition for 50 years and explores this decade of disruptive social commentary in his art. Amongst the works on display are four paintings from a series of twelve\, inspired by Samuel Richardson’s international bestseller\, Pamela\, or Virtue Rewarded\, explicitly making reference to the abuse and sexual violence at the core of the novel. On public display in the UK for the first time as part of Basic Instincts is a remarkable painting that still retains the power to shock. The Angel of Mercy depicts a desperate mother in the act of killing her baby\, with the distant Foundling Hospital presented as the alternative. Set among Highmore’s tender portraits of mothers and children\, family and friends\, this show uniquely demonstrates the artist’s depth and variety. \nFree entry with musuem admission\, click here for more information.

SUMMARY:Raft of the Medusa (Exhibition runs until 29 Sep 2017 - 07 Jan 2018)
DESCRIPTION:The Foundling Museum displays a series of five previously unseen sculptures by acclaimed artist Rachel Kneebone\, providing a resonant counterpoint to their exhibition Basic Instincts. \nRachel Kneebone is a British artist whose intricate works address and question the human condition. Raft of the Medusa’s tumbling limbs and fractured swags are at once coquettish and sinister; their gleaming white surfaces and exquisite detail belie scenes of collapse and dismemberment. \nUsing porcelain\, a delicate material traditionally associated with Rococo exuberance and fine tableware\, Kneebone subverts viewers’ expectations. Visibly exploiting the material properties of porcelain\, she deliberately allows her work to distort and crack in the kiln\, inviting the viewer to question the relationship between strength and vulnerability. \nThis display in the Museum’s historic rooms distils and abstracts the Foundling Hospital’s suppressed narratives of sexual desire\, emotional damage\, and female strength\, whilst also referencing ideas of displacement\, refuge\, and resilience. To discover more about Kneebone’s work\, hear the artist and Museum Director Caro Howell in conversation on Friday 6 October. \nFree entry with musuem admission\, click here for more information.

SUMMARY:On British Soil: Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands (Exhibition runs from 19 October 2017 – 9 February 2018)
DESCRIPTION:“Everything that people thought they knew about the German occupation of the Channel Islands is – at best – partial and – at worst – inaccurate\,” explains co-curator Dr. Gilly Carr on the motivation for a new exhibition at The Wiener Library. \nDuring the German occupation of the Channel Islands 1940-1945\, many thousands of people were persecuted\, including slave labourers\, political prisoners and Jews. Their story has been largely omitted from a British narrative of ‘standing alone’ against Nazism and celebrations of British victory over Germany. \nOn British Soil – Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands tells the stories of these persecuted\, drawing upon The Wiener Library’s rich archival collections\, files recently released by The National Archives\, and never seen before items from the personal collections of victims of Nazi persecution. \nFrom the experiences of a young Jewish woman living quietly on a farm in Jersey and later deported to Auschwitz\, to those of a Spanish forced labourer in Alderney\, and the story of a man from Guernsey whose death in a Nazi prison remained unknown to his family for over 70 years\, this exhibition highlights the lives of the persecuted and the post-war struggle to obtain recognition for their suffering. \nPlease visit The Wiener Library website for more information\, you can read the full press release here. \nOpening hours: Monday-Friday 10am-5pm\, Tuesdays: 10 am – 7:30pm\nFree entry \nProduced in collaboration with Dr. Gilly Carr of Cambridge University\, and with the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. \nImage credit: \n1) Hedwig Bercu © Jersey Archives\n2) © John Dalmau\, Slave Worker in the Channel Islands (1956)\, Wiener Library Collections
