SUMMARY:Elephant Path presents: Economy & Skills Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the launch of a book that uniquely combines local economy\, community engagement and changing neighbourhoods. The publication explains the reasoning behind experiments conducted over the past 18 months in Barcelona\, Berlin\, Antwerp and London and captures valuable lessons for community activists\, policy makers\, researchers\, planners as well as local business people. \nThe book will be launched on Thursday 9 November 2017 at 7pm at Wellcome Collection (Burroughs Room)\, 183 Euston Road\, NW1 2BE with a short talk by Michael Edwards (Senior Lecturer\, Economics of Planning at UCL Bartlett School & Hon Prof) followed by drinks and snacks during which there will be an opportunity to meet representatives from the 4 cities: Transit from Barcelona\, Tesserae from Berlin\, endeavour from Antwerp and City Mine(d) from London. \nIn La Marina in Barcelona\, Mehringplatz in Berlin\, Oudaan/Sint Andries in Antwerp and King’s Cross/Somers Town in London these groups developed and supported local initiatives that require\, reveal\, create and improve very different types of skills: from the harder skills of understanding urban spatial and economic development schemes to the softer ones dealing with group dynamic and interpersonal relations. In a later stage they asked what these skills could mean in a future world of work. \nThis project was coordinated by City Mine(d) and is part of Elephant Path\, a bridge between large companies and locals in the Kings Cross/Somers Town area\, and was co-founded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. \nClick here for more information and to book a place.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Scythians at the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Scythians warriors of ancient Siberia\, the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Scythians warriors of ancient Siberia \n2\,500 years ago groups of formidable warriors roamed the vast open plains of Siberia. Feared\, loathed\, admired – but over time forgotten… Until now. \nThis major exhibition explores the story of the Scythians – nomadic tribes and masters of mounted warfare\, who flourished between 900 and 200 BC. Their encounters with the Greeks\, Assyrians and Persians were written into history but for centuries all trace of their culture was lost – buried beneath the ice. \nDiscoveries of ancient tombs have unearthed a wealth of Scythian treasures. Amazingly preserved in the permafrost\, clothes and fabrics\, food and weapons\, spectacular gold jewellery – even mummified warriors and horses – are revealing the truth about these people’s lives. These incredible finds tell the story of a rich civilisation\, which eventually stretched from its homeland in Siberia as far as the Black Sea and even the edge of China. \nMany of the objects in this stunning exhibition are on loan from the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Scientists and archaeologists are continuing to discover more about these warriors and bring their stories back to life. \nExplore their lost world and discover the splendour\, the sophistication and the sheer power of the mysterious Scythians. \nRegistration: Please click here to book your place.

SUMMARY:Seen and not heard: the untold history of homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Cardboard chronicles — writing the homeless into history \nThe scourge of homelessness and rough sleeping have been around for centuries\, yet the stories of people who lack access to housing\, sustenance or security are largely missing from the history books. \nOn 22 November\, theatre company Cardboard Citizens\, in partnership with the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) at the School of Advanced Study\, University of London\, will challenge researchers\, activists\, actors and artists to answer the question\, ‘How can we find ways to listen to the voices of those who lack access to housing\, sustenance or security?’. \n‘Seen and not heard: the untold history of homelessness’\, which takes place in London’s Whitechapel from 6.30 – 9.30\, will engage the public in a debate about how history has shaped the way we relate to homeless people in the present. \nThis timely conversation\, one of the events in School of Advanced Study’s Being Human festival\, includes contributions from Cardboard Citizens’ artistic director Adrian Jackson\, Dr Mark Price\, a philosopher and official biographer of artist\, Robert Lenkiewicz; and artist and book designer Esther McManus. \nDuring the evening a short theatre production based (verbatim) on Robert Lenkiewicz’s previously unpublished survey will relate compelling stories of rough sleepers in Plymouth during the 1970s. These recorded testimonies reveal the tenacity and struggle of people on the margins of British society. Tickets\, priced £5\, can be booked here with all proceeds going to Cardboard Citizens. \nThe ‘Seen and not heard: the untold history of homelessness’ workshop is part of the IHR’s ‘Stray Voices: The Unsettled History of Homelessness’ project\, which explores the buried stories of homeless men and women whose voices are overlooked in the historical record. \nhttps://beinghumanfestival.org/event/seen-not-heard-untold-history-homelessness/

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture 2017: The Tale of Three Spiritual Cities
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed historian Dr Bettany Hughes will deliver this year’s Candida Lycett Green Lecture\nJoin the Churches Conservation Trust this November as their Vice President\, acclaimed historian and broadcaster\, Dr Bettany Hughes\, weaves a tale of one the world’s greatest – and most ancient – cities. \nThe city with three names – Byzantium\, Constantinople\, Istanbul – resonates as an idea\, as well as a place. Standing as the gateway between the East and West\, this city has served as the capital of the Roman\, Byzantine\, Latin and Ottoman Empires. \nBettany’s lecture is based on the extensive research undertaken to write her epic biography of Istanbul from 6\,000BC to 1924. In particular\, she will investigate the story of religion and faith in this\, the centre of Christendom\, and civilisation’s desire to understand the world in spiritual terms. \nThe audience will have a chance to ask Bettany their questions\, purchase a copy of her latest book Istanbul and enjoy light refreshments during a drinks reception included in the ticket price. \nKnowledge Quarter partner Churches Conservation Trust would like to offer Knowledge Quarter partners members’ rates on tickets. \nThe Annual Lecture is held each year in celebration of the life and work of the late Candida Lycett Green\, a passionate champion of historic English churches and former Vice President of The Churches Conservation Trust. \nRegistration: Please click here to book your place.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private Tour: Life on the London Stage at London Metropolitan Archives
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff and friends from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private tours and views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the London Metropolitan Archives. You are invited to an exclusive morning curator tour of the Archive’s new exhibit Life on the London Stage. \nLife on the London Stage is a new exhibition at London Metropolitan Archives which uncovers the lives of some of the actors and actresses recorded in our archives\, capturing both professional and personal details that provide a glimpse of the challenges and joys of theatrical life since the days of Elizabeth I. \nDrawing on a wide variety of photographs\, prints and documents\, we have brought together a collection of stories which illustrate different aspects of the lives of London’s performers\, from those who achieved great success to those who endured poverty and hardship. \nDocuments recording the life of Edmund Shakespeare\, William’s forgotten brother\, appear together for the first time presenting the seemingly tragic story of the young actor who followed his older brother to London. \nLedgers and letters document the lives of some of London’s most celebrated stars\, including Kenneth Williams\, Dame Ellen Terry and Eliza (Madam) Vestris. The houses associated with Nell Gwyn\, surely one of London’s greatest rags to riches stories\, are presented alongside Sir Laurence Olivier’s bespoke orders from one of the capital’s most prestigious boot makers. \nPlease Note\, there are only 15 places for this event. Please only register if you are confident you will be able to attend on the day. \nRegistration: Please click here to book your place.

SUMMARY:Turing Lecture: AI through the looking glass
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Dame Wendy Hall \nAI through the looking glass \nArtificial Intelligence is set to transform society in the coming decades in ways that have long been predicted by science fiction writers but are only now becoming feasible. \nWhile AI is still a long way from being as powerful as the human brain\, many machines can now outperform human beings\, particularly when it comes to analysing large amounts of data. This will lead to many jobs being replaced by automated processes and machines. \nAs with all major technological revolutions\, such advancements bring with it unexpected opportunities and challenges for society with a need to consider the ethical\, accountability and diversity impacts. \nIn this talk\, Wendy Hall will lay out why we need to take a socio-technical approach to every aspect of the evolution of AI in society. She will also consider how the UK might position itself\, in light of the AI Review\, recently undertaken as part of the UK government’s industrial strategy. \nAs Alice found when she went through the looking glass\, everything is not always what it first appears to be. \nSpeaker Biography  \nWendy Hall\, DBE\, FRS\, FREng is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton and was Dean of the Faculty of Physical Science and Engineering from 2010 to 2014. She was Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) from 2002 to 2007 and is now a director of the Web Science Institute. \nOne of the first computer scientists to undertake serious research in multimedia and hypermedia\, she has been at its forefront ever since. The influence of her work has been significant in many areas including digital libraries\, the development of the Semantic Web\, and the emerging research discipline of Web Science. \nIn addition to playing a prominent role in the development of her subject\, she continues to shape science and engineering policy and education. Through her leadership roles on national and international bodies\, she has shattered many glass ceilings\, readily deploying her position to promote the role of women in science\, engineering and technology\, and acting as an important role model for others. \nShe became a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2009\, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in the same year. \nWendy was elected President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in July 2008\, and was the first person from outside North America to hold this position. \nClick here to register.

I’m proud of the piece of music Jill [Jarman] has written – Echoes from the Birdcage – and believe it will have a lasting legacy not only in the King’s Cross area\, but hopefully as an inspirational piece that gets people thinking about the sound environment of their particular space.” \nMaxine Shannon\, Project Manager (Events & Enlivenment)\, Kings Cross said\, “We have been thrilled to work with Dame Evelyn as the King’s Cross Musician in Residence throughout 2017 and we are looking forward to seeing the culmination of her work during the final performance in December. It has been great to see the local community playing such an active role in the evolving arts and enlivenment programme at King’s Cross\, London’s new creative quarter.”   \nVanessa Reed\, Chief Executive\, PRS Foundation said\, “It has been fantastic to see Dame Evelyn Glennie and her team reach out to the schools\, workers and residents of Kings Cross this year and really get them thinking about\, and involved in\, the creation of new music and how their local environment can provide inspiration. These collaborations have shaped Evelyn’s new piece\, and we’re all very much looking forward to hearing it on 22nd December. ”

SUMMARY:Memento – Poet in the City and Aurora Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Technology has rapidly transformed the way we store memory and our very own relationship to this critical aspect of being human. What can music and poetry tell us about this dramatic shift in our everyday lives? \nIn this cross-disciplinary event\, Poet in the City and Aurora Orchestra uncover the story of a ground-breaking new technology that will enable us to remember more than ever before. Through the world premieres of electrically-charged new music and poetry\, they explore the question: what happens when matter\, music\, and language are placed under pressure? \nInspired by this question\, composer Martin Suckling and poet Frances Leviston have created electrically-charged new works that draw on the memory of two great artistic forbearers\, Franz Schubert and Emily Dickinson. Suckling explores the idea of music under pressure by echoing\, distorting\, and crystallising fragments of Schubert’s sublime String Quintet. Leviston references the voltage of Dickinson’s densely packed poems and wonders how Dickinson might have responded to this advance in technology. Experimental physicist Stuart Parkin\, one of the pioneers spearheading this new technology\, joins Suckling and Leviston to present his reflections. \nCommissioned by Bio Nano Consulting Ltd for the dissemination of PETMEM (Piezoelectronic Transduction Memory Device)\, a European Commission-funded project which brings together universities\, research institutions and companies to explore low-voltage memory technologies. \nTickets on sale now – KQ partners get 15% discount by using code Memento15. \npoetinthecity.co.uk\nauroraorchestra.com \nPhoto: Aurora Orchestra © Simon Weir

SUMMARY:“Caste discrimination in the UK” Documentary screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:The caste system has been a source of much debate in South Asia. But what happens when British Indians say caste discrimination has followed them overseas? \nCaste Aside is a documentary about the British government’s controversial decision to introduce legislation against caste discrimination in the UK. \nHighlighting both sides of this heated debate\, the documentary speaks to Dalit rights activists\, Hindu community leaders\, academics and lawyers\, as well as those who say they have been discriminated against on the basis of their caste – here in Britain. \nWhile some members of the British Indian community believe that making caste an aspect of the Equality Act 2010 would shine a negative light on the Hindu community and create social tension\, others believe that caste legislation is a necessary protection for victims. \nThe UK government has been torn between these two groups for years\, finally resulting in a public consultation to seek the views of the general public on the issue. With the consultation now complete\, both sides await a response. \nWith a big decision on the government’s hands\, Caste Aside highlights the bigger picture behind the public consultation and the story behind the UK’s caste problem. Who will the government ultimately believe? \nClick here for more information and to register to attend this screening.

SUMMARY:“Dangers and Delusions”? Perspectives on the women’s suffrage movement.
DESCRIPTION:Displaying items from UCL Special Collections\, this exhibition examines the actions and reactions attending the women’s suffrage movement from the 1860s up to the Representation of the People Act 1918. Satirical commentaries including Laurence Housman’s Anti-Suffrage Alphabet are set alongside campaign literature and petitions for and against legislative change. \nThe movement calling for women’s right to vote in the United Kingdom was drawn out over several decades and generated intense differences of opinion\, not only between those for and against electoral equality\, but also within pro- and anti-suffrage campaigns. This exhibition draws on items held in UCL Special Collections – satirical commentaries\, campaign literature\, personal notes and petitions – to examine the actions and reactions surrounding the case for universal suffrage\, from the 1860s up to the fi rst legislative step towards equality for women: the Representation of the People Act\, 1918.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: The Lost Words at the Foundling Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff and friends from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the Foundling Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at ‘The Lost Words‘ exploring the relationship between language and the living world through an exhibition of poetry and illustration. \nAbout The Lost Words \nThe Lost Words is a unique collaborative project between the award-winning author Robert Macfarlane\, and acclaimed artist and author Jackie Morris\, in response to their belief that nature is in retreat from our children’s stories and imaginations. The exhibition presents a new series of poems and accompanying illustrations that conjure the beauty of nature\, for visitors young and old. \nIn 2002 the results of a Cambridge University survey\, published in Science\, found that British schoolchildren were able to identify Pokémon far more accurately than species of common UK wildlife. In a 2008 National Trust survey\, only a third of primary age children could identify a magpie\, though nine out of ten could name a Dalek. This exhibition summons this vanishing wildness back into existence in a joyful celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke. Robert Macfarlane has created twenty acrostic poems or ‘spells’ focused on common nature words that are fading from use as the species themselves decline\, while Jackie Morris\, inspired by her lifelong passion for Britain’s landscapes and wildlife\, has painted beautiful\, iridescent watercolours which take viewers on a journey in which the familiar is magical once more. \nThe Lost Words explores the widening gulf between childhood and the natural world in the 21st century\, but also speaks to an important aspect of the Foundling Hospital’s history and ethos. Items from the Hospital archive that relate to the importance placed on fresh air and the children’s education\, such as reading games and aids\, some with lost or archaic vocabulary\, are displayed alongside the artwork\, demonstrating the institution’s forward-thinking health and education practices. \nClick here to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Over My Shoulder
DESCRIPTION:This project derives from from a curious connection between two very different and fascinating singers. Elisabeth Schumann\, international classical diva\, and Jessie Matthews\, darling of the 1930s stage and screen\, are buried in the same West London churchyard. \nEach of these women was hugely famous in her day\, reaching the very peak of the performing profession\, and yet their names are hardly recognised now by younger generations of music-lovers. Over My Shoulder sets out to remedy this by weaving together the lives of these two singers as an introduction to their music and artistry\, built around the unexpected intersection of their stories here in England. \nBoth Elisabeth and Jessie have rich personal stories as well as their musical careers. They experienced the ups and downs\, joys and challenges that the performing life unavoidably entails: there were romantic scandals\, tragedies\, falls from grace and triumphant come-backs. \nThe success of my first narrated recital Haydn’s London Ladies\, demonstrated how well-suited this style of speaking and singing is to combining a wide variety of musical items and historical anecdotes. Over My Shoulder includes music by Schubert to Rodgers & Hart\, taking us from Covent Garden to Hollywood and back via Richard Strauss\, Noël Coward and Otto Klemperer. \nThe first performance of Over My Shoulder was given at St Martin’s Church\, Ruislip on September 16th\, 2017\, in the presence of Elisabeth Schumann’s three grandchildren via her marriage to Walter Puritz. \nThe next performance will be at St Paul’s Church\, Wilton Place\, Knightsbridge on Thursday 15th February\, 2018 at 7.30pm. \nBook tickets or click here for more information.

SUMMARY:Bach\, the Universe & Everything – Seeing Life in a New Light
DESCRIPTION:Bach is often praised by scientists for the intricate structures and symmetries in his music. He wrote more than 200 cantatas\, a collection of vocal works which explore questions of faith\, time and eternity. Taking inspiration from Douglas Adams’ quote that ‘Bach tells you what it’s like to be the universe’\, this unusual series from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The Institute of Physics at Kings Place swaps metaphysics for physics to celebrate extraordinary universe and the music of Bach with some of Britain’s brightest scientists. \nThe next event (Sunday 18th February) features one of Bach’s most spine-tingling cantatas. Mixing joyful arias with funeral sounds\, it’s a rollercoaster journey through life and death. The OAE are joined by Professor Kishan Dholakia. A world expert in the physics of light\, he’s fascinated by how photonic imaging can unravel the mysteries of the brain. \nClick here for more information and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Materials Protecting the Environment Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The second event in the Materials Protecting Society (MPS) Seminar Series. Organised by the IOM3 Sustainable Development Group. \nThere is a real challenge for materials scientists and engineers to understand how their expertise and professional practises can affect environmental performance and contribute towards more sustainable outcomes. In many cases the apparent solutions to solving one environmental impact can increased impacts in another part of the product life cycle or perhaps in another impact category. So how can we make informed decisions in materials selection and new material developments to ensure that progress and solutions are heading in the right direction. \nThis event will set out the challenge and inform the debate on the following critical environmental topics facing society: \n\nClimate change: transport\, building and construction\nOcean health: challenge of plastics and marine biodiversity\nCircular economy: business innovation\, resource efficiency and recycling\n\nThe sessions will include Q&A and will encourage discussion and contributions from the delegates. We recognised that measures for improvement will need further debate and we welcome this to help support strategies on the best way forward. \nFull programme and registration details can be found here.
