DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece \n\n\nIn 1881 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin visited London for the first time. On a trip to the British Museum\, he saw the Parthenon sculptures and was instantly captivated by the beauty of these ancient Greek masterpieces. \nLike many archaeological ruins\, the Parthenon sculptures had been broken and weathered over centuries\, but Rodin took inspiration from the powerful expression that they conveyed through the body alone. He even removed the heads and limbs from his own figures to make them closer to the broken relics of the past. By doing so\, he created a new genre of contemporary art – the headless\, limbless torso. \nA hundred years after his death\, see a selection of Rodin’s works – including his iconic sculptures The Thinker and The Kiss – in a new light. This major exhibition will feature original plaster\, bronze and marble examples of many of Rodin’s sculptures on loan from the Musée Rodin in Paris. For the first time\, they will be shown alongside some of the Parthenon sculptures that the artist so admired\, as well as selected objects from his own collection of antiquities. \nExperience the magnificent sculpture of a modern master\, and explore how the ancient world shaped his artistic vision

SUMMARY:Placeless people: writing\, rights and refugees
DESCRIPTION:In 1944 the political philosopher and refugee\, Hannah Arendt wrote: ‘Everywhere the word “exile” which once had an undertone of almost sacred awe\, now provokes the idea of something simultaneously suspicious and unfortunate.’ Exiles from other places have often caused trouble for ideas about sovereignty and the law and nationhood. But the meanings of exile changed dramatically in the 20th century\, often leaving human rights law struggling to catch-up. This lecture discusses how writers such as Arendt\, Orwell\, Simone Weil\, Dorothy Thompson\, and Samuel Beckett responded to the mass displacements of the last century\, and anticipate many of the issues we confront today. Sceptical about the ability of human rights to legislate for refugees\, yet committed to universal justice\, these writers challenge us to imagine new terms for placelessness in modern times. Chaired by Professor Phillipe Sands\, QC at Matrix Chambers\, it features contributions from writer and broadcaster\, Professor Lyndsey Stonebridge. SUMMARY:Charles Dickens: Man of Science
DESCRIPTION:In 1839\, the writer and physiologist George Henry Lewes visited Charles Dickens at Doughty Street and examined his bookshelves. He left accusing Dickens of being ‘completely outside philosophy\, science\, and the higher literature’. For over 150 years\, it was thought that Charles Dickens was either not interested in science\, or was downright hostile to it. But Dickens’s science was not the science of books or learned institutions; for Dickens\, science mattered when it transformed lives by curing disease or cleaning streets\, or opening up new vistas of wonder in a humdrum world. \nCharles Dickens: Man of Science aims to reveal Dickens not only as a scientific enthusiast\, but as the key communicator of science in the Victorian age. Displaying his writings alongside artefacts\, instruments\, and texts of the developing sciences\, we share the story of Dickens’s friendships and scientific passions. Journeying through some of Dickens’s favourite sciences – geology\, thermodynamics\, chemistry\, and medicine – we reveal that what made him a great writer was precisely what made him a man of science. \nFind out more here

SUMMARY:Sea - Jodie Carey at the Foundling Museum
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by the Foundling Museum\, Jodie Carey has created three new site-responsive installations in response to the Foundling Hospital story. Displayed within the exhibition gallery and amongst the historic Collection\, these monumental pieces are imbued with a sense of remembrance and emotional trace. \nDrawing inspiration from the eighteenth-century fabric tokens left by mothers with their babies as a means of identification – one of the few tangible connections between mother and child – Sea is formed of hundreds of swatches of fabric that have been dipped in liquid clay and fired. These delicate ceramic fragments cover the exhibition gallery floor. Upstairs\, two monumental works cast in the earth explore ideas of memory and time. Eighteen life-size plaster sculptures crowd the Anteroom\, while in the Foyer a delicate and slender bronze sculpture stands floor to ceiling. \nCarey’s abstract and organic works seek to make visible the fragility of life and human relationships\, to acknowledge the absent presence of the thousands of children who passed through the Foundling Hospital\, and to reflect on the elemental drives at the heart of its story; love\, loss\, and survival. \nJoin the conversation #JodieCarey.

SUMMARY:Richard Woods - Upgrade
DESCRIPTION:On 1 June\, in a parking space in East London\, North London\, Richard Woods create Upgrade – a month-long site-specific installation that engages with issues of housing and urban regeneration. \nLike Wood’s contribution to the 2017 Folkestone Triennial\, Upgrade uses the form of a graphic three-dimensional caricature of a house to bring a fresh perspective to its urban location. \n\n‘I had been filling a skip with all the leftover material that we had used to build the Holiday Homes on the Folkestone Harbour Arm\, and it struck me how potent an image it made – having bits of window or chimney poking out of the skip. In the studio\, we chatted about whether it would be possible to expand the idea and make it into an object – and then out of the blue Lee emailed and introduced the project. We quickly realised we’d both had the same idea. It was the easiest pitch I have ever had to make…’

In the year of the centenary of the women’s vote\, Sounds Like London also highlights the important contribution made by women in the music industry. \nIt takes part during Rebel Women\, the National Portrait Gallery’s year-long season of events in 2018 to mark the centenary of women gaining the vote in Britain. \nBiographies \nRebecca Allen \nAfter studying at the Trinity College of Music in London\, Rebecca Allen started her career at the BBC where she worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and then the BBC Proms. She joined Universal Classics & Jazz in 1999 as Press Assistant\, later rising to the role of Director of Media\, and she remained with the label after it was renamed Decca Records in 2009. Allen was promoted to General Manager in 2012\, Managing Director in 2014 and then to President of Decca Records Group UK in 2017 – becoming the first woman to lead the label in its long and distinguished history. Since taking the helm\, she has signed major artists including legendary film composer Ennio Morricone and Norwegian songstress Aurora; she has put UK country music in the spotlight with the success of The Shires; she has helped bring jazz to a wider audience with Gregory Porter and Melody Gardot; and she has championed young classical stars such as Nicola Benedetti\, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Milos. She continues to work closely with many high profile artists including Rod Stewart\, Andrea Bocelli\, The Lumineers\, Ludovico Einaudi and Alfie Boe. Rebecca also sits on the board of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance \nImelda May \nImelda May\, born and raised in The Liberties area of Dublin\, has become one of Ireland’s most celebrated female artists. Discovered by Jools Holland\, who asked Imelda to support him on tour\, she has gone on to perform alongside such legends as Lou Reed\, Robert Plant\, Van Morrison and Jeff Beck\, and can count an array of eminent artists including Bob Dylan and Bono as fans and friends. Imelda has headlined at some of the most prestigious venues in the world\, including London’s Royal Albert Hall\, as well as appearing on high-profile TV series such as The Graham Norton Show and Jay Leno. Her projects have been created by spending intensive periods of time in particular locations. SUMMARY:London 1938: Defending 'Degenerate' German Art
DESCRIPTION:The Wiener Library’s summer 2018 exhibition explores the history and context of an exhibition held in 1938 at the New Burlington Galleries in London entitled Twentieth Century German Art.  \n2018 marks the eightieth anniversary of this exhibition\, which was the most prominent international response to the Nazi campaign against ‘degenerate’ art. It remains the largest display of twentieth-century German art ever staged in Britain.The show featured over three hundred examples of modern German art\, by exactly those artists who had faced persecution in Germany: the exhibition in London in 1938 was an attempt to defend them and their work on a world stage. \nThe Wiener Library’s exhibition tells the story of the Third Reich’s campaign against ‘degenerate’ art and this response in London in 1938. The exhibition features a number of the original artworks from the New Burlington Galleries’ exhibition\, including works by Emil Nolde and Max Slevogt\, presented with the stories of their lenders in 1938. DESCRIPTION:C&I Wellbeing is providing a day of Mental Health Awareness Training for senior managers on Friday\, 22nd June 2018.  The day will run from 9:30am to 5:30pm\, and will be held at the Wesley Hotel\, near Euston Station. \nThis specific training for managers will help them to support their team’s mental health and to develop a culture that encourages people to be open and to ask for help if they are experiencing difficulties. Like our Mental Health Awareness Training for staff this course will provide an overview of common mental health difficulties including risk factors\, common symptoms and how these present in the workplace. In addition\, we cover how challenges are best-addressed in a management context. \nThis course will enable line managers to gain the confidence and skills to support their staff with their mental health needs. It also focuses on wider organisational considerations\, such as ways that organisations can promote an open and positive workplace culture around mental health. SUMMARY:Noh + Neuroscience - Glimpsing the Invisible
DESCRIPTION:As part of Noh Reimagined two leading neuroscientists\, Professor Semir Zeki and Professor Atsushi Iriki\, will examine curious connections between the 650-year-old tradition of Noh and the mechanisms of our brain. \n‘Since so much in Noh performance is left to the imagination\, which is a mental activity produced by the brain\, I have decided to supplement what is on stage with lighting that will produce a visible\, sensory counterpart – coloured shadows – which is also produced by the brain.’ \nProfessor Semir Zeki\, a pioneer of neuroesthetics will speak about the objectivity of subjective state and will illustrate this using the coloured shadow illusions in collaboration with Noh performers. \nProfessor Atsushi Iriki will examine evidence-based speculations in light of his recent research on how we acquired the concept of the ‘meta-self’ (a third-person sense of our own existence) in relation to Riken-no-ken (a form of self-analysis used by Noh performers) and how we visualise illusions as realistic entities in Noh performances. \nBook your tickets here. \nAbout Noh Reimagined 2018: The Sublime illusions.  \nFollowing the highly successful 2016 edition\, Noh Reimagined is returning to Kings Place with an exciting new theme and line-up. The two-day festival explores the art of Noh\, the iconic theatrical tradition that originated in fourteenth-century Japan. This edition will shed light on the unique dramaturgy of Mugen (‘phantasmal’) Noh\, in which the main actor (shite) appears as a ghost in the dream of a travelling monk performed by the supporting actor (waki). The ghost then tells the tragic story of its past life\, expressing deep regret and lamentations\, hoping to find peace. \nTop Noh performers from Japan will work with innovative British artists and neuroscientists in genre-defying collaborations to examine the surreal artistic elements of Noh.
