DESCRIPTION:** POSTPONEMENT NOTICE ** \n\nWe’ve had some feedback ahead of our event\, and it has become apparent that many people are unable to attend the event due to their caring responsibilities and the format and timing of the event (school pick-ups).  \nIn light of this\, we’ve decided to postpone this event to the new year. We really feel this subject is of great importance and relevance to staff members across the Knowledge Quarter and hence we’ll move it to a date and time that’s more accessible for staff who are carers. We apologise for the oversight in our part and any inconvenience caused to you.  \nBhavit Mehta \nEvents Manager\, Knowledge Quarter \n\n\nBook tickets through Eventbrite here. \nThis event will be part of our wellbeing special interest group series\, open to all KQ staff. This meeting will bring together people who are interested in practises that can improve and support the wellbeing of staff with caring responsibilities in the KQ. \nAcross the UK today\, 6.5 million people are carers\, supporting a loved one who is older\, disabled or seriously ill (Carers UK). 1.3 million people provide over 50 hours of unpaid care per week. Furthermore\, in 2020 the rate of children under 18 years in care went up to 67 out of 10\,000 (up from 60 in 2015) (CORAM). Every day another 6\,000 people take on a caring responsibility in the UK. \nAlthough caring can have many positive and rewarding aspects\, there are lots of reasons why caring can have an impact on your day to day life\, and why you may need support. This event aims to address some of the issues around this theme\, considering flexible working policies\, sign posting local expertise on caring\, and how KQ partners may be able to share best practise and support each other. \nOur Hybrid Events:  \nThe KQ’s Hybrid events will take place simultaneously in-person and via Zoom. \nThere will be two options when selecting to book a ticket: In-Person and Virtual. Please select the format in which you would like to attend the event. We have a limited capacity of in-person tickets for this event. SUMMARY:KQ Masterclass: Mental Health and Wellbeing of your Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a masterclass in talking with colleagues and managers about mental health and wellbeing at work\, in partnership with C&I Wellbeing Partnerships\, of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. \nThe pandemic has not only had an impact on peoples’ mental health\, but it has pushed this need to the top of the wellbeing agenda for many\, if not all\, organisations. This masterclass will help you dispel any myths that are still out there about mental health presentations\, and will also give you some tips on how to have a helpful conversation with your colleagues and manager about mental health difficulties. We will also have a think about what a meaningful wellbeing strategy should include.  \nThis masterclass will be facilitated by Dr Beverley Flint. Bev is a clinical psychologist with C&I Wellbeing Partnerships\, of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. She was the Interim Workforce Wellbeing Lead for her Trust throughout the pandemic and has been providing mental health workshops and training to businesses for a number of years now. She also places psychologists into businesses via her other role with HelloSelf.

DESCRIPTION:Book tickets via Eventbrite here.  \n\n  \nIncome Inequality in the Knowledge Quarter \nAccording to the latest ONS Household Finances Survey\, the gap between the richest in society and the rest of the population has widened over the last 10 years. \nIslington has the 4th highest levels of income inequality in London\, and Camden is one of ten boroughs with the largest pay disparities – shockingly\, both boroughs have more than 1 in 3 children living in poverty (according to the most recent Trust For London Data). Across all UK regions\, the ethnicity pay gap was largest in London at 23.8% (ONS) and female employees were paid on average 16% less per hour than men in 2021 (London.Gov datastore). \nFor this special conference legacy event\, a panel of economists and policy experts will discuss the causes and impacts of pay and income inequality on KQ organisations and the area they call home. \nSo what steps can organisations take to tackle inequality within their own organisations? Join us at 3pm on Wednesday 9th March for an online experience brought to you by the UCL Slade School of Fine Art and UCL Culture. \nThis year\, the Slade is celebrating 150 years of fine art teaching and research. From Stanley Spencer and Chila Kumari Burman to Rachel Whiteread and Michael Armitage\, Slade School of Fine Art has educated and trained generations of world-renowned artists since 1871. \nCurators\, Staff and Students from the Slade will offer an exclusive virtual Private View for the Knowledge Quarter\, showcasing their current artist-led exhibition SLADE 150: PAST\, PRESENT\, FUTURE. Students on programmes from BA to PhD level\, across all artistic disciplines\, explore ideas of tradition and heritage\, and ask how new generations can challenge and disrupt these. \nThe Private View will also showcase their parallel exhibition TESTING GROUND at the UCL Art Museum\, and PRINT PALS: THEN AND NOW – a print collaboration between the Slade and the National College of the Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, Pakistan. \n  \nAbout our speakers: \nNina Pearlman\, PhD\, is Head of UCL Art Collections at UCL. She works collaboratively at the intersection of research\, curating\, collecting\, arts management\, arts policy and innovation. She established Curating Equality at UCL\, a virtual platform for projects with UCL Art Collections that employ a collaborative\, interdisciplinary and poly-systems approach to gender equity in the arts and is a co-researcher on The Sloane Lab: Looking back to build future shared collections\, a multi-partner project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council under the Towards a National Collection programme. Pearlman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, board member of Craftspace\, and co-producer of the Women to Watch project for UK Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. \n\nAbi Ola is an MFA Fine Art 2021 graduate in the area of painting. She works with painting\, collage\, screen printing\, photography and performance. Combining autobiographical and collective histories she takes inspiration from old family clothes\, nature\, and tribal art as well as African and Oceanic textiles. Through the original patterns that emerge she seeks to represent her West African heritage and her life in the UK. Ola intentionally obscures the identities of the figures in her work to allow the audience to place themselves or their loved ones within the images she creates. Ola is one of two 2021 UCL East student artists in residence. \nInstagram – @abiolaartist & Twitter – @AbiOlaArtist \n\nLícia Santos is in the final year of her MFA in Fine Art in the area of painting. Her practice explores the body and nature through drawing\, painting and performance\, often drawing on her mixed Angolan and Portuguese heritage. Her work for Slade 150 engages for the first time with the practice of print\, making etchings based on life observations of her peers at the Slade. She is interested in how spaces influence the creative process and how artists find refuge in these and consequently in each other. In 2020 she graduated from Goldsmiths College\, was Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year series 7 and received the Slade’s Euan Uglow scholarship. In the year of her graduation from Goldsmiths College in 2020 she was recipient of the Slade’s 2020 Euan Uglow scholarship and participant in Sky Arts Portrait of the Year. \nInstagram: @licia_santos \n\nKorallia Stergides is in her final year of the MFA Fine Art in the area of media. She is an interdisciplinary artist based between London and Cyprus working with performance\, installation and media. Stergides interweaves autobiographical narrative into her work that explores the vital politics of care in an interdependent world and emphasises nonhuman agencies. Moments of public gestures of care toward nonhumans imprinted in public spaces and buildings hold particular interest. Her work for Slade 150 introduces for the first time object making alongside drawing and sound\, and takes as its focus the stray cat that transitions between its role as domestic and public ‘pet. \nInstagram: @aillarok \n  \nAbout Slade School of Fine Art at UCL \nSince its foundation in 1871\, following a bequest to UCL from Felix Slade\, the School has been a leader in fine art education\, fostering innovative\, interdisciplinary artistic and art research cultures. Examining over a century of mainstream comics\, graphic novels and sequential art from around the world\, Superheroes\, Orphans & Origins: 125 years in comics explores the challenging origins and complex identities of some of the most popular figures in comics. \nThe exhibition looks beyond the traditional ‘superhero’ genre to explore characters from early newspaper comic strips\, including Skeezix from Gasoline Alley\, who was left on a doorstep in 1921\, and Little Orphan Annie. You will make bioplastics from algae-derived extracts\, explore alginate-based threads and composite materials made from algae and waste. \n*It is recommended that you bring your own mold for casting the bioplastic. This masterclass will help you understand how stress impacts our mental and physical health and wellbeing and will also give you some tips on how to have a helpful conversation with your colleagues and manager about managing stress. It has been designed to make us question the motives behind the recording of historical events and to encourage critical thinking on racism\, hatred and ‘fake news’ today. \nTaking the instantly recognisable Nazi-propaganda images of sub-human victims in Nazi ghettos and concentration camps\, visitors are led to reconsider the images as persecuted and dignified humans living ‘everyday’ lives only days before the Nazis came to power. \nFeatured in the exhibition is an award-winning immersive virtual reality (VR) experience. This cutting-edge experience enabled visitors to enter a virtual environment and ‘step into’ a Nazi-produced Holocaust photograph taken in the Warsaw Ghetto.

DESCRIPTION:The Aga Khan Foundation are delighted to announce the return of the Silk Road Bazaar — an artisan market laden with goods from countries along the historic Silk Road trading route. \nFrom 22-24 July\, a select group of artisanal vendors will come together to form the Silk Road Bazaar 2022. Shoppers will learn about artisanal crafts from across the Middle East and Asia and be able to purchase Pakistani homeware\, Afghan jewelry\, Grade A organic saffron from Iran\, small batch artisan teas and baklava and much more. Shoppers will be able to support artisans from a number of countries including Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Egypt\, Turkey\, and Syria. Food and drink from countries across Eurasia will also be available. \nBut artisanal products are only the start of it.\n1. The bazaar will be hosting a special classical Indian musical and dance performance from Akademi at 1pm on Saturday 23 July\n2. SUMMARY:Craft School: A Summer of Playful Making
DESCRIPTION:Craft School: A summer of playful making\, is a chance for children and young\npeople to get making and be inspired by the Crafts Council Collection and\nbrilliant creations made by school students from across the UK. \nThis summer the Crafts Council Gallery will become a hive of activity where\nvisitors can create\, play\, and experiment with clays\, textiles\, paper\, and card at a\n‘making table’ and meet others who also love craft. There will be a free weekly\nworkshop held every Wednesday in August\, led by our friendly staff and skilled\ncraft educators. \nCraft School will display six winning entries from our national school’s competition\nCraft School: Yinka’s Challenge\, developed in collaboration with multi-\ndisciplinary British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori. Learners from across KS1 – KS4 were\ninvited to explore themes of play\, storytelling\, and empowerment through\nmaking. \nOut of the 100 entries that were submitted\, the judging panel selected six winners\nof the challenge including: the students of the lower primary class at Richard\nCloudesley Special School in Islington who were inspired by upcycling projects\nby Yinka Ilori to create a mobile using decorated old CDs for their classroom: and\nDiane Mwamikazi\, a key stage 4 student at Bury College who created a colourful\nand richly patterned miniature pavilion inspired by the clothing of her Congolese\nand Rwandan family members. Collectively\, these works celebrate making by\nyoung people and explore how craft can be a place for young makers to develop\nand reflect on their histories\, cultures\, and identities. \nAlongside these schools’ projects\, visitors will be able to handle and experience\ncraft by leading professional makers from our Collections. Each of these objects\nexplore ideas of materiality and play and include Colour Breeze#1 by\nmischer’traxler studio\, a 3-metre-long installation of paper-like circles which light\nup in a vibrant display of colours once visitors interact with them: leather bottles\nmoulded on to found objects by Simon Hasan: and wooden objects by Howard\nRaybould who was the head prop maker on the iconic film 2001: A Space\nOdyssey. \nThe Crafts Council believe that every child and young person has the right to\nexplore their own creativity through making. Making with their hands helps young\npeople to develop problem-solving and communication skills alongside practical \n̺ \nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England.\nskills of creating\, mending\, and repairing. Craft de-stresses\, empowers\, and\ncontributes to wellbeing and happiness. \nAs craft education is in steep decline in UK schools\, we have developed a teaching\nand learning framework ‘Make First’ which is driven by learners’ own interests.\nMake First encourages getting craft materials into students’ hands allowing for\nopen-ended and instinctive making through material exploration and\ndevelopment. Craft School is an opportunity for parents\, caregivers\, and teachers\nto connect with the Crafts Council. \nCraft School is the perfect place for families\, children\, and young people to\ndiscover more about craft\, have a go themselves and start their own journey to\nbecoming a maker in a friendly and inclusive space. \nCraft School is part of the Crafts Council’s Make! DESCRIPTION:Magnificent Maps of London brings together some of the best-known records of the capital. Following an extensive program of conservation treatment\, Civitas Londinium\, the first surviving map of the city is on display at London Metropolitan Archives for the first time. \nThis very rare opportunity to see one of only three known copies of the map will transport visitors to the streets (and fields) of Tudor London. The exhibition will also include work by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg\, John Rocque\, John Ogilby and William Morgan\, Richard Horwood\, and Christopher and John Greenwood. \nThe exhibition tour begins at 9am and is a KQ member only event. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this ground breaking private view exploring some of the most challenging questions that will need answers this century. There will be hot drinks\, pastries and presentations from leading scientist and Crick researcher Güneş Taylor and the Creative Producer of the exhibition\, Ruth Garde. \nCut + Paste will explore the ethical issues surrounding genome editing and its potential applications\, inviting visitors to reflect on questions including:\n● Should genome editing be used to avoid or treat ‘severe’ conditions? If so\, who gets to decide which conditions are ‘severe’?\n● If genome editing in plants or animals could help to reduce hunger\, malnutrition or climate change\, would you support it?\n● Should genome editing be used to create human ‘enhancements’? How can ‘enhancement’ be defined?\n● Genome editing has the power to shape the future. Whose vision of the future should it be? \nThrough a series of hands-on activities created by The Liminal Space\, visitors to one of Europe’s largest biomedical research institutes will be given a glimpse of future science and society. Visitors will be encouraged to share their thoughts and reflect on how scientific tools might be used in different scenarios\, today and in years to come. \nThe exhibition will take place within sight of laboratories where researchers are already using genome editing technologies every day to study health and disease\, including fertility\, brain development\, cancer\, tuberculosis\, malaria\, COVID-19\, and many more topics. \nGenome editing is when scientists make changes to DNA\, a long molecule that carries genetic information and the instructions for constructing and operating a living organism. Editing DNA helps scientists understand the role of different genes and has already been proved to be a useful tool\, for example\, it has led to new treatments for certain conditions and the creation of disease-resistant crops. \nOver recent years\, new genome editing tools have been developed which allow scientists to alter DNA more quickly\, easily and accurately. These technologies hold vast potential to improve human health and the world around us\, but they also come with all sorts of ethical questions. \nRobin Lovell-Badge\, principal group leader at the Crick and international expert on genome editing says\, “As technology and science progresses\, things that were previously impossible or in the realm of science-fiction\, are now reality. But important questions remain about how comfortable we are as a society for genome editing to be used and where the line should be drawn. These questions are not just for scientists to answer\, as the decisions will impact all of us.” \nRuth Garde\, creative producer for Cut + Paste\, says\, “Genome editing will be a new and unfamiliar topic for a lot of people. The borough has long been a focus of the entertainment industry from its infamous 18th century pleasure gardens and19th century music halls\, to hosting some of London’s most iconic theatres.
