SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: The American Dream at the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at The American Dream: pop to the present the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? Sign up to our updates here. \nAbout The American Dream \nThe past six decades have been among the most dynamic and turbulent in US history\, from JFK’s assassination\, Apollo 11 and Vietnam to the AIDS crisis\, racism and gender politics. Responding to the changing times\, American artists produced prints unprecedented in their scale and ambition. \nStarting with the explosion of pop art in the 1960s\, the exhibition includes works by the most celebrated American artists. From Andy Warhol\, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg to Ed Ruscha\, Kara Walker and Julie Mehretu – all boldly experimented with printmaking. Experience this extraordinary history through their eyes. \nTaking inspiration from the world around them – billboard advertising\, global politics\, Hollywood and household objects – American artists created highly original prints to rival their paintings and sculptures. Printmaking brought their work to a much wider and more diverse audience. \nThe sheer inventiveness and technical ingenuity of their prints reflects America’s power and influence during this period. Many of these works also address the deep divisions in society that continue to resonate with us today – there are as many American dreams as there are Americans. \nThis exhibition presents the Museum’s outstanding collection of modern and contemporary American prints for the first time. These will be shown with important works from museums and private collections around the world. \nRegister: Please go to our Eventbrite page to book a place.

SUMMARY:Addressing Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:New Knowledge Quarter partner Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust would like to invite KQ partners to a free introductory presentation where we will be discussing common mental health difficulties\, mental wellbeing and stigma. We will also be considering some ways that employers could start to address this often overlooked issue in the workplace. \nMental health problems remain the most common reason for absence in the workplace. This costs UK industry billions of pounds per year. Stigma attached to living with mental health difficulties remains a significant barrier to people sharing their struggles\, and means it remains an often neglected topic. \n\nWork-related mental ill health costs the UK economy up to £26 billion every year through lost working days\, staff turnover and lower productivity.\n60% of employees say they’d feel more motivated and likely to recommend their organisation as a place to work if their employer took action to support mental health.\n1 in 4 people suffer from a common mental health problem.\n\nCome along and hear from Dr Beverley Flint and Dr Lisa Cohen\, Clinical Psychologists\, Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust. \nIf you wish to secure a place\, please email us at wellbeing@candi.nhs.uk or call us on 020 3317 6466. \nImage Credit – witsu.ie

SUMMARY:Kings Cross [Remix] by Tom Marshman (show runs until 27 May 2017)
DESCRIPTION:Kings Cross [Remix] uncovers the hidden histories of LGBTQ communities in London during the 1980s. Tom Marshman uncovers the hidden histories of LGBTQ communities through memories of the Kings Cross area; an area that has undergone radical change since its day as a hub of LGBTQ communities\, bars and culture. \nWoven together from the stories of people who experienced it first hand\, Tom’s show celebrates a raucous\, riotous time in the life of central London where sexuality was for exploring\, HIV was causing tragedy\, and rights were to be fought for. \nThe show runs from 16 May to 27 May\, for more information and to book tickets click here. \nCommissioned by and developed with the support of Camden People’s Theatre.

SUMMARY:Mr A moves in mysterious ways (New exhibition running from 15 May to 25 July)
DESCRIPTION:Birkbeck\, University of London is delighted to launch Mr A moves in mysterious ways\, an exhibition coming to the Peltz Gallery from 15 May\, displaying works from the Adamson Collection. The Adamson Collection is one of the world’s largest collections of artworks made by psychiatric patients. It consists of approximately 6\,000 paintings\, drawings and sculptural objects\, produced between 1946 and 1981 by the residents of Netherne\, a long-stay British mental hospital\, under the guidance of professional artist Edward Adamson. \nThis exhibition displays selected works by eight people\, chosen for their distinctive visual styles and particular histories. For the first time\, these works will be showcased under the artists’ names: JP Senitt\, Thea Hart\, Helen Greig\, Mary Bishop\, Martin Birch\, Rolanda Polonsky\, Gwyneth Rowlands and Ron Hampshire. \nDr Fiona Johnstone\, Associate Research Fellow in Art History at Birkbeck said: “By presenting these individuals as artists\, rather than as un-named and undifferentiated psychiatric patients\, and framing their objects as artworks\, the exhibition aims to highlight the aesthetic\, personal and historical dimensions of the collection\, whilst remaining sensitive to its medical and therapeutic contexts.”   \nAdamson pioneered the use of art therapy for those living with mental illness. He was initially engaged with Netherne to assist with research into the relationship between mental illness and creativity. His job was to encourage the patients to paint\, with the resulting works transferred to clinicians for analysis. After the study ended in 1951\, Adamson established an open studio where residents were allowed to come and paint freely. He rejected the diagnostic focus of the earlier experiments\, convinced that the very process of art making was therapy enough\, and that creative expression could be a tool to help people find their way back to wellness. \nThe collection interweaves a range of narratives\, including the history of the post-war mental institution\, the development of psychiatric practice in the UK\, and the origins of art therapy as a profession. It also tells a number of individual stories\, including that of Adamson himself\, and of the people who produced work under his guidance. \nThis exhibition is supported by a Wellcome/ Birkbeck ISSF Public Engagement Award. It has been curated by Dr Heather Tilley and Dr Fiona Johnstone in association with Birkbeck’s Centre for Medical Humanities.  \nFurther information can be found on the exhibition website: https://mramovesinmysteriousways.wordpress.com \nImage 1: Image caption: Helen Grieg\, The Foetus / Rebirth. SUMMARY:Close the deal: The Art and Science of successful negotiation
DESCRIPTION:When: 15-19 May 2017 and 5-9 June 2017 \nCost: £4250. 20% off for Knowledge Quarter partners \nNegotiations are ubiquitous. As individuals we negotiate on a daily basis whether we are making decisions with friends and family or sealing a professional deal at work. Negotiations can range from the seemingly trivial to the very serious. \nIn business\, negotiations occur at every level; between employers and employees\, within and between firms\, between firms and government bodies\, across sectors and industries and between domestic organisations and foreign ones. And so on. Negotiations take place on matters of policy and finance – indeed negotiations can – and do – occur on anything and everything where more than one party – or “player” – is involved. \nIs this course aimed at you? \nEveryone is involved in some type of negotiation on a daily basis\, and so this course will be beneficial to a wide range of people from different organisations and backgrounds. \nIt may be of special relevance to senior managers and c-suite colleagues as well as to lawyers and individuals who are involved with commercial litigation\, dispute resolution and mergers. \nColleagues who work in sales\, purchasing and/or procurement will also find this course useful\, as will consultants who work client-side and officials who are involved in BREXIT and other policy-related negotiations. \nNo prior knowledge of game theory or economics is required and everything will be taught in plain English. Where technical concepts and tools are introduced\, this will be done cognisant of the fact that it is a non-specialist audience and will be delivered by people who have experience of doing exactly this. \nNot only that; this course is led by top Warwick University staff from a leading Department of Economics\, ranked in the top 3 in all major UK league tables; and the course will also have sessions delivered by some world class practitioners. \nFor more information and to book yourself a place then please go to the University of Warwick website.

SUMMARY:Jo Brocklehurst: Nobodies and Somebodies (Exhibition runs until 14 May 2017)
DESCRIPTION:Jo Brocklehurst: Nobodies and Somebodies Exhibition at the House of Illustration \nDrawing live in fetish clubs\, punk squats and on the performance scene of 1970-90s London\, Berlin and New York\, Jo Brocklehurst’s artwork is a unique record of subculture. \nHer figurative paintings from fetish clubs document experiments with sex\, androgyny and couture that later inspired the mainstream fashion collections of Jean Paul Gaultier\, while her best-known portraits from the 1980s offer a raw\, beautiful and female perspective on punk. \nCo-curated by her model and muse Isabelle Bricknall\, the exhibition also features her drawings of Berlin’s 1990s performing arts scene for the Berliner Zeitung newspaper\, alongside clubland-inspired interpretations of Alice Through the Looking Glass. \n“This new exhibition shows unseen portraits – many thought lost – of caberet artists\, bohemians\, new romantics\, punks\, drag queens and fetish fans… The most inventive extremes of London’s clubland became Brocklehurst’s catwalk.” New York Times \nThe exhibition runs until 14 May 2017\, please go to the House of Illustration website to purchase tickets. \nCost: £7.50\, adult ticket

SUMMARY:ACE Dance and Music - Ten
DESCRIPTION:ACE Dance and Music\nTEN \nSpecial offer from Knowledge Quarter (KQ) partner The Place to get £12 tickets instead of £16 for KQ members with the code ACE17. \nAt a time when more and more people across the world find themselves having to leave their lands\, ideas of home and belonging are unknown. \nInspired by global migration\, TEN is centred around the relationship between two brothers. SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Festival Engagement Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter would like to invite you to a unique festival networking event\, where you can begin to make connections with a whole host of organisations across Camden and Islington. \nThe aim of this event is to introduce festival organisers and community engagement specialists from Knowledge Quarter partners\, at a relaxed and informal evening at the Royal Veterinary College. \nLaunched two years ago\, the Knowledge Quarter (KQ) is a partnership of 80 academic\, cultural\, research\, scientific and media organisations located in a one-mile radius around King’s Cross\, Euston Road and Bloomsbury. Collectively\, the geographic area of the Knowledge Quarter contains possibly the greatest knowledge cluster anywhere in the world. \nThe KQ’s partners range from internationally significant research institutes to emerging organisations in the creative industries. Partners include the British Museum\, the University of the Arts London\, Google\, the Digital Catapult\, Wellcome Trust\, The Guardian and the British Library. The partners might be vastly different\, but all share one common purpose: the creation and dissemination of knowledge. \nThe Knowledge Quarter has a keen interest in engaging with its direct communities and has developed a Community Engagement Group to focus on this important area. The group is made up of a specialist network of staff from the KQ partner organisations whose focus is working on collaborative and independent community projects. \nFestival Organisers: We would like to invite festival organisers to share information and examples of your festival highlights\, and to help with this we will give each organisation a table and poster stand to fill however you choose! The Knowledge Quarter will provide an £100 budget to each participating festival organisation\, please bring your invoices along to the event and a cheque will be issued on the night. \nKnowledge Quarter partners: We would like Knowledge Quarter partners to consider what skills and activities they can offer to our local festivals\, and bring along a clear idea of how best to engage. We will have a space for notices to be placed which festival organisers to view\, ensuring that no conversation or opportunity is missed. \nGeneral notice: Whilst some of the organisations might be responsible for grant funding in different departments\, this event is focussing on activities and skills that Knowledge Quarter partners can offer. We do however\, recognise that fundraising is a key issue\, and we would like to offer people who attend the April event the chance to attend a free fundraising capacity building workshop in autumn. \nThis is a free event however places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. \nRegistration: Please go to our Eventbrite page to book your place.
