SUMMARY:Craft School: A Summer of Playful Making
DESCRIPTION:Craft School: A summer of playful making\, is a chance for children and young\npeople to get making and be inspired by the Crafts Council Collection and\nbrilliant creations made by school students from across the UK. \nThis summer the Crafts Council Gallery will become a hive of activity where\nvisitors can create\, play\, and experiment with clays\, textiles\, paper\, and card at a\n‘making table’ and meet others who also love craft. There will be a free weekly\nworkshop held every Wednesday in August\, led by our friendly staff and skilled\ncraft educators. \nCraft School will display six winning entries from our national school’s competition\nCraft School: Yinka’s Challenge\, developed in collaboration with multi-\ndisciplinary British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori. Learners from across KS1 – KS4 were\ninvited to explore themes of play\, storytelling\, and empowerment through\nmaking. \nOut of the 100 entries that were submitted\, the judging panel selected six winners\nof the challenge including: the students of the lower primary class at Richard\nCloudesley Special School in Islington who were inspired by upcycling projects\nby Yinka Ilori to create a mobile using decorated old CDs for their classroom: and\nDiane Mwamikazi\, a key stage 4 student at Bury College who created a colourful\nand richly patterned miniature pavilion inspired by the clothing of her Congolese\nand Rwandan family members. Collectively\, these works celebrate making by\nyoung people and explore how craft can be a place for young makers to develop\nand reflect on their histories\, cultures\, and identities. \nAlongside these schools’ projects\, visitors will be able to handle and experience\ncraft by leading professional makers from our Collections. Each of these objects\nexplore ideas of materiality and play and include Colour Breeze#1 by\nmischer’traxler studio\, a 3-metre-long installation of paper-like circles which light\nup in a vibrant display of colours once visitors interact with them: leather bottles\nmoulded on to found objects by Simon Hasan: and wooden objects by Howard\nRaybould who was the head prop maker on the iconic film 2001: A Space\nOdyssey. \nThe Crafts Council believe that every child and young person has the right to\nexplore their own creativity through making. Making with their hands helps young\npeople to develop problem-solving and communication skills alongside practical \n̺ \nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England.\nskills of creating\, mending\, and repairing. Craft de-stresses\, empowers\, and\ncontributes to wellbeing and happiness. \nAs craft education is in steep decline in UK schools\, we have developed a teaching\nand learning framework ‘Make First’ which is driven by learners’ own interests.\nMake First encourages getting craft materials into students’ hands allowing for\nopen-ended and instinctive making through material exploration and\ndevelopment. Craft School is an opportunity for parents\, caregivers\, and teachers\nto connect with the Crafts Council. \nCraft School is the perfect place for families\, children\, and young people to\ndiscover more about craft\, have a go themselves and start their own journey to\nbecoming a maker in a friendly and inclusive space. \nCraft School is part of the Crafts Council’s Make! Craft! Live! programme. A\nseason of nationwide exhibitions\, learning events\, fairs\, and digital activities that\ncelebrates the value of craft to empower\, enrich and connect our society.\nCrafts Council Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday\, 11am – 5pm. Drop-in or\nbook tickets in advance at\nhttps://crafts-council.arttickets.org.uk/ \nGraphic design for Craft School is by Daly & Lyon. \nQuotes \n“I am trying to really encourage young people in schools to tell their own personal\nstories within design\, whether it’s about family or friends or experiences. I think\nanyone trying to develop their voice in their making\, my first tip would be to be\nproud of your story and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable in your work”\nYinka Ilori\, Crafts Council Trustee\, and co-creator of the national school\ncompetition Craft School: Yinka’s Challenge. \n“We hope Craft School will inspire more people to experience varied materials\,\nlearn new skills\, produce pieces full of pride and find ways to express themselves.\nBut most importantly\, we want more people to benefit from the magic and joy\nmaking brings.”\nNicky Dewar\, Director of Learning and Skills

SUMMARY:Human Resources - Creativity as Renewable Energy in a Time of Scarcity

SUMMARY:*UPDATE* KQ Private View and Drinks Reception: Alexander the Great Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:*STRIKE UPATE* \nDue to the planned rail strikes on the 14th December\, we’ve taken the hard decision to postpone the private view and drinks reception until the Monday 19th December to ensure as many of our partners as possible are able to attend the event.  If you are not able to attend on the 19th\, please let us know by cancelling your booking or emailing Freddy Green (freddy.green@bl.uk) directly. \nThank you for your understanding \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nEnd of year KQ Private View and drinks reception: \nJoin us for this in-person end of year private view and drinks reception at the British Library’s acclaimed Alexander the Great exhibition. \nThere will be drinks and networking on the British Library’s terrace level from 18:00 and access to the exhibition itself from 18:30. \n  \nAlexander. \nHe built an empire that stretched across the world. Rode across the sky on a flying chariot. And descended to the bottom of the sea in a glass bell. \nOr did he? \nPiece together an epic tale 2\,000 years in the telling. From astrological clay tablets\, ancient papyri\, and medieval manuscripts\, to Hollywood and Bollywood movies and cutting-edge videogames\, our major exhibition crosses continents to explore the fantastical stories that turned legacy into legend. \nPharaoh\, prophet\, philosopher. European\, Middle Eastern and Asian cultures have all moulded Alexander into the fictional hero they want him to be. And today artists and storytellers alike are still trying to reimagine the man and his myth. Who was he really? You’ll have to decide for yourself… \n  \nThe exhibition space has limited capacity\, so please register via the eventbrite link. This is a free private view and drinks reception open to Knowledge Quarter members only. \nN.B. the Library has a no food or drink policy for the actual exhibition space.

SUMMARY:KQ Private View: CUT + PASTE\, Explore the Building Blocks of Life
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this ground breaking private view exploring some of the most challenging questions that will need answers this century. There will be hot drinks\, pastries and presentations from leading scientist and Crick researcher Güneş Taylor and the Creative Producer of the exhibition\, Ruth Garde. \nCut + Paste will explore the ethical issues surrounding genome editing and its potential applications\, inviting visitors to reflect on questions including:\n● Should genome editing be used to avoid or treat ‘severe’ conditions? If so\, who gets to decide which conditions are ‘severe’?\n● If genome editing in plants or animals could help to reduce hunger\, malnutrition or climate change\, would you support it?\n● Should genome editing be used to create human ‘enhancements’? How can ‘enhancement’ be defined?\n● Genome editing has the power to shape the future. Whose vision of the future should it be? \nThrough a series of hands-on activities created by The Liminal Space\, visitors to one of Europe’s largest biomedical research institutes will be given a glimpse of future science and society. Visitors will be encouraged to share their thoughts and reflect on how scientific tools might be used in different scenarios\, today and in years to come. \nThe exhibition will take place within sight of laboratories where researchers are already using genome editing technologies every day to study health and disease\, including fertility\, brain development\, cancer\, tuberculosis\, malaria\, COVID-19\, and many more topics. \nGenome editing is when scientists make changes to DNA\, a long molecule that carries genetic information and the instructions for constructing and operating a living organism. Editing DNA helps scientists understand the role of different genes and has already been proved to be a useful tool\, for example\, it has led to new treatments for certain conditions and the creation of disease-resistant crops. \nOver recent years\, new genome editing tools have been developed which allow scientists to alter DNA more quickly\, easily and accurately. These technologies hold vast potential to improve human health and the world around us\, but they also come with all sorts of ethical questions. \nRobin Lovell-Badge\, principal group leader at the Crick and international expert on genome editing says\, “As technology and science progresses\, things that were previously impossible or in the realm of science-fiction\, are now reality. But important questions remain about how comfortable we are as a society for genome editing to be used and where the line should be drawn. These questions are not just for scientists to answer\, as the decisions will impact all of us.” \nRuth Garde\, creative producer for Cut + Paste\, says\, “Genome editing will be a new and unfamiliar topic for a lot of people. Cut + Paste offers a really engaging and approachable opportunity to explore it\, which is so important – not only because of the ethical dilemmas it raises about how to tackle current and future health challenges\, but also because it asks questions about what it means to be human in a time of advancing scientific technologies.” \nTo register\, please use the Eventbrite link here

SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Japanese Aesthetics of Recycling at SOAS
DESCRIPTION:Join the KQ for this collaborative private view of the ‘Japanese Aesthetics of Recycling’ exhibition at the Brunei Gallery\, with talks from our partners at SOAS and Cockpit. \nExhibiting over 100 objects from the Karun Thakar Collection\, the exhibition includes exquisite examples of ‘Boro’ and ‘sakiori’ textiles\, washi and kin-tsugi or gin-tsugi pottery. \nBoro (Japanese: ぼろ) is a class of Japanese textiles that have been mended or patched together. The term is derived from Japanese boroboro\, meaning something tattered or repaired. Fashioned from worn clothing and ‘waste’ fabric to create ‘Boro’\, the textile pieces have become very popular with collectors in Japan & throughout the world over the last 20 years. These pieces are often marketed as ‘abstract art’ in the Western context. They are in fact an important aspect of Japanese history and culture\, showing the resilience and creativity shown by working people living in very harsh environment with very few resources. \nTo give insight into artistic recycling practices with textiles today\, this event will include a talk from award-winning textile artist\, Alice Burnhope\, based at Cockpit Studios. Alice specialises in socially-engaged artwork\, co-creating immersive installations and sculptural wearable art with the public to support their wellbeing and connection to nature. Alice’s practice is based in sustainable textile techniques\, such as utilising waste materials\, natural dyes and patchwork. \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe public entrance to the Brunei Gallery is located opposite the main SOAS campus. The gallery is fully wheelchair accessible with a ramp to the right of the entrance. \nWheelchairs are available to borrow on site\, our team are happy to assist when requested. \nThe Brunei Gallery has several spaces on three different levels\, the ground floor\, upper galleries lower galleries. The Lower and upper galleries are accessible by stairs and a lift. \nThere is a wheelchair accessible toilet within the gallery\, located at the back of the Foyle Gallery on the ground floor. \nLarger text \nA larger format of the text panels is available on request through the gallery on gallery@soas.ac.uk or via the reception desk. \nIf you have any further accessibility questions and/or requirements\, please get in touch with Jemima Barnes (jemima.barnes@bl.uk).

SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Fortitude at the Royal College of Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Booking via Eventbrite\, click here. \nJoin the KQ for this private view and guided tour of ‘Fortitude‘ at the Royal College of Physicians. Places are strictly limited\, so book early to avoid disappointment. \n‘The pandemic really brought out the good in people\, it seemed to illuminate our strengths and fortitude in the face of an ever-evolving virus.’ – RM\, clinical microbiology fellow\, north-west England \nIn January 2021 the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) museum created a survey to collect and record the experiences of RCP members and other healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic. From trainee doctors and consultants to GPs and physician associates\, survey respondents from over 20 medical specialties and professions described how their lives were transformed. With their permission\, the RCP is privileged to share their experiences\, in their own words. \nThese stories may be challenging to read and hear. They are honest and speak of suffering\, chaos and exhaustion. They are also inspiring\, filled with compassion\, courage and joy. Some stories may contradict our own understanding of the pandemic\, and others caution and urge us to learn from these experiences. \nThe objects\, images\, written accounts and recordings in the exhibition were donated to the RCP via the survey\, and the quotes are taken directly from donations. Please note: This exhibition contains images\, descriptions and audio recordings relating to illness\, death\, grief and trauma. \n‘I hope that the sharing of our experiences can help people to glean some further understanding and show some greater compassion for all those that have toiled\, sacrificed and suffered in the last few years … Though it may be difficult and they may want to turn away\, I hope they don’t so we can all build a deeper understanding of what so many like me have experienced in the healthcare profession.’ – YT\, palliative medicine ST5 (specialty training year 5)\, London. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe RCP building has a lift at the main entrance and accessible lifts within the building\, the exhibition is on the lower ground floor. There are accessible toilets on the lower ground and ground floors. Car parking is available but must be booked in advance. \nGuide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome. \nFor those with noise sensitivity\, the exhibition space is in an open space\, with other events being held in the building. Whilst the timing of this private view means the building will be a little quieter\, there may be background noise that may affect attendees. There are spaces for quiet reflection as part of this exhibition and if you have any questions about finding a quiet space\, please direct these to our Events Manager\, Jemima. \nThe RCP’s accessibility pages provide further information about the building\, please click here. SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Observatory at Central Saint Martins for London Design Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join the Knowledge Quarter for a tour and private view of Observatory\, Central Saint Martins’ 2024 London Design Festival exhibition which celebrates interdependence in creative practice — much like the Knowledge Quarter\, where cross-disciplinary thinking joins up. \nSign up to the private view here.\n  \nThis KQ CONNECT event will feature an exclusive tour and Q&A at 08:45 with the exhibition team. We will be hosted by co-curators Teleri Lloyd-Jones and Kate Keara Pelen\, along with Amar Sall\, exhibition designer. Breakfast will be provided. As with all our private views\, you’re welcome to turn up at any time between 08:30 and 10:00. \nAbout the exhibition\nWelcome to Observatory; we invite you to look and look again. \nOur 2024 London Design Festival exhibition celebrates interdependence in creative practice. We’ll be exploring the orbits and constellations that spread out of creative practice and creative education: an interdependent network of people\, moments\, spaces\, resources and skills – much like the Knowledge Quarter\, where cross-disciplinary thinking joins up. \nEach exhibit brings with it a story of iteration\, exploration and conversation. Our Observatory invites you to look closer\, to examine creativity as a process and to witness transformation. Across art\, design and performance\, work by students and staff demonstrates creativity as a connector: of people\, places and ideas. \nProjects featured include ReRoasted\, a project working with Origin roasters at the British Library\, demonstrating the re-use of spent coffee grounds in ceramic-making and a proposal to challenge our relationship to ‘waste’. Other work addresses cultural permanence for marginalised and migrant communities; and western influence on Artificial Intelligence\, leading to flaws in translating nuanced subject matter and raising questions of trust. \nStep inside and connect with the life and work of Central Saint Martins. \nFind out more about the exhibition here. \nWhat is KQ CONNECT?\nKQ CONNECT is our networking event series that brings KQ colleagues together across our diverse range of partner institutions. SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of 'A Silk Road Oasis' at the British Library
DESCRIPTION:Join the KQ for a private curator talk about the British Library’s current exhibition A Silk Road Oasis: Life in Ancient Dunhuang. \nSign up to the private view here.\n  \nWith the world’s earliest complete printed book with a date to the earliest known manuscript atlas of the night sky\, we will travel back in time to more than 1\,000 years ago to discover the stories of diverse Dunhuang and its people. \nLike the Knowledge Quarter\, Dunhuang hosted a melting pot of multiple languages\, faiths and cultures and facilitated the free exchange of ideas\, technologies and art. \nThis KQ CONNECT event features an exclusive talk led by Kitty Liu\, the exhibition’s project curator. The talk will begin at 08:45. There will be time before and after to enjoy the exhibit and mingle with fellow KQ community members. \nMore about the exhibition\nThe oasis of Dunhuang\, at the edge of the Gobi Desert\, was once a bustling town on the famous Silk Road connecting China and the Mediterranean. Discover the personal stories of those who lived\, travelled through\, worked\, and worshipped here more than 1\,000 years ago. Explore an astonishing time capsule that opens windows onto the intimate worlds of artists and scribes\, merchants and fortune-tellers\, diplomats\, Buddhists and nuns. \nNamed “Blazing Beacon” after the watchtowers along its walls\, Dunhuang was once a vital meeting point at the gateway to China. The routes that converged here ran through Constantinople in the West and Japan in the East. But there was more to this verdant oasis than trade. For over 1\,000 years\, Dunhuang was also an important pilgrimage site\, a cultural melting pot where ideas\, technologies and art flowed freely. \nThis exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the ordinary lives of people long ago through the remarkable contents of the Library Cave\, part of the Buddhist cave complex of Mogao\, where a wealth of manuscripts\, documents and artworks remained sealed for nearly 900 years. Detailing life in and around Dunhuang during the first millennium CE\, the documents include personal letters and wills encompassing multiple languages\, faiths and cultures including Buddhism\, Zoroastrianism\, Manichaeism and Christianity; and span topics as diverse as literature\, astronomy\, medicine\, politics and art. \nRead more about the exhibition here. \nAbout the curator (and our guide)\nKitty Liu joined the Library as project curator for the exhibition A Silk Road Oasis: Life in Ancient Dunhuang. With a lifelong passion for museums and cultural heritage\, Kitty specializes in the preservation and study of ancient Chinese architecture. She began her career as a heritage consultant before spending five years curating exhibitions and managing collections in museum settings\, honing her skills in presenting cultural treasures to the public. \nWhat is KQ CONNECT?\nKQ CONNECT is our networking event series that brings KQ colleagues together across our diverse range of partner institutions.
