SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Joy and Tranquillity
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nThis Summer\, the Wellcome Collection launches On Happiness\, a season of free events\, activities and two exhibitions – Joy and Tranquillity – which bring together voices from across the cultural\, scientific and spiritual fields to reflect on the elusive subject of happiness. In this period of great instability\, escalating infectious diseases\, ecological concerns and rising levels of anxiety and depression worldwide\, Wellcome Collection examines the ways in which people find resilience\, hope and even joy at times of duress. In response to seismic political and social upheavals On Happiness asks; how might we rebuild happiness for our current times? \nJoin Wellcome Collection curators Laurie Britton Newell and George Vasey for this exclusive Virtual Private View of the joint exhibitions Joy and Tranquillity which consider different routes to experiencing these positive feelings. From the uplifting sensations of dancing and laughter to the calm of being in nature and diary writing\, the exhibitions consider the effects of emotion on our self and others. \nFrom serenity to ecstasy\, awe to comfort\, happiness encompasses many different feelings\, and has perplexed scholars for centuries. There has long been debate around the role of emotions\, where they come from and how they are expressed\, and whether they are innate or acquired\, universal or culturally specific. Reflecting on the connections between these complex emotions\, our bodies and health\, On Happiness offers audiences an opportunity to rethink how we feel good. \nNewly commissioned works and multi-sensory installations by contemporary artists including Jasleen Kaur\, Chrystel Lebas\, Harold Offeh\, Amalia Pica\, Stefanie Posavec and David Shrigley are on display alongside historic objects dating back to the 14th century from Wellcome’s collection. The exhibitions consider ideas from different schools of thought including neuroscience\, religion and psychotherapy offering a range of perspectives on the connections between emotions and health. \nImage credit: Joy Inside Our Tears\, 2021\, ©  Harold Offeh.\nProduction stills. Performers: Veronica Cordova de la Rosa\, Samara Mayanja\, Harold Offeh and Ebun Sodipo. Commissioned by Wellcome Collection. (CC-BY-NC) \nOur virtual events: \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. To ensure you are able to join the event\, please ‘arrive’ (via the link sent through Eventbrite) around 5 minutes before the start. This will ensure you are able to be let into the Zoom room before we reach full capacity. \nOnce you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive a Zoom link by email 48 hrs before\, 2 hrs before and 10 minutes before the event\, please check your JUNK folder for these emails as they are sent directly through Eventbrite’s system. \nYou do not need to download Zoom software in order to participate – there is a web browser version which works perfectly well. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with the KQ events team Bhav and Mia. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private virtual views? SUMMARY:KQ Masterclass: Putting Content Online
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nJoin us for a masterclass in putting content online\, in partnership with IP experts\, Briffa. \nIn 2020\, we had to adapt to life on Zoom. Everything from dating to trading to religious ceremonies were experienced largely in the online realm. In 2021\, we have ventured back out into the open\, but for many life will never be the same again. Having made the quantum leap\, it’s impossible to go back. This sea change presents a plethora of opportunities and challenges\, in particular for those in the business of creating and sharing content on line. We will look at three things. \nCopyright – The far-reaching nature of copyright law means that the use of almost all types of creative content is potentially restricted by copyright law in some way. We will discuss when and how such content can and cannot be used and shared online. \nPrivacy – 2018 saw the introduction of the most ground-breaking change to data protection law in two decades\, impacting not just Europe but anyone doing business in or through Europe. We will discuss how the enhanced privacy rights and obligations introduced by the GDPR (and\, post-Brexit\, the UK GDPR) impact our freedom to collect\, use and share personal data online. \nBrands – For those trading online\, brands are sacrosanct. A competitor setting up a website or social media account mimicking your own is the modern day equivalent of having a copycat open up across the street. Losing your trade mark or domain name to an opportunistic squatter is the equivalent of having your store burn down. It can devastate a start-up or a small business. We will discuss the importance of brands in the online word and in particular how to protect your own brands and how to avoid inadvertently infringing the brands of others. \n  \nOur Hybrid Events:  \nThe KQ’s Hybrid events will take place simultaneously in-person and via Zoom. \nThere will be two options when selecting to book a ticket: In-Person and Virtual. Please select the format in which you would like to attend the event. We have a limited capacity of 15 in-person tickets for this workshop event. You do not need to download Zoom software in order to participate – there is a web browser version which works perfectly well. \nOnce you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive ether a link or instructions to find the venue by email 48 hrs before the event. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with the KQ events team: Bhav (bhavit.mehta@bl.uk) or Mia (mia.johnson@bl.uk).  \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future hybrid events? SUMMARY:KQ Private View: This Fascist Life
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \n\n\n\nJoin the KQ for this In-Person Private View\, in collaboration with the The Wiener Holocaust Library. \nIn the years after the First World War\, fascist political parties\, militia and movements emerged across Europe. United by ultra-nationalist ideas and similarities of style and action\, these movements shaped\, and in some places remade\, politics and society. They mobilised on the streets to attack their opponents and to support the accession to power of fascist parties in countries such as Italy\, Germany\, and Austria. Later\, they helped to enable German occupations and the Nazis’ policies of persecution and genocide across Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nDrawing upon The Wiener Holocaust Library’s unique archival collections\, as well as the expertise of an international group of specialists in interwar fascism\, this exhibition focuses on the experiences of the rank-and-file members of fascist movements in the interwar period. It explores the world of the young and socially diverse fascist activists and examines their motivations and activities. \nPhoto credit © Wiener Holocaust Library Collections \n\nAbout KQ Private Views: \nStaff and friends of the Knowledge Quarter and its 100+ partner organisations get free\, out-of-hours access to some of the best exhibitions in London. \nOur series of exclusive Private Views has opened the doors (before they open to the public) of the British Museum\, The Francis Crick Institute and the Wellcome Collection. SUMMARY:Postponed - KQ Wellbeing Roundtable: Carers in the KQ
DESCRIPTION:** POSTPONEMENT NOTICE ** \n\nWe’ve had some feedback ahead of our event\, and it has become apparent that many people are unable to attend the event due to their caring responsibilities and the format and timing of the event (school pick-ups). \nIn light of this\, we’ve decided to postpone this event to the new year. We really feel this subject is of great importance and relevance to staff members across the Knowledge Quarter and hence we’ll move it to a date and time that’s more accessible for staff who are carers. We apologise for the oversight in our part and any inconvenience caused to you. \nBhavit Mehta \nEvents Manager\, Knowledge Quarter \n\n\nBook tickets through Eventbrite here. \nThis event will be part of our wellbeing special interest group series\, open to all KQ staff. This meeting will bring together people who are interested in practises that can improve and support the wellbeing of staff with caring responsibilities in the KQ. \nAcross the UK today\, 6.5 million people are carers\, supporting a loved one who is older\, disabled or seriously ill (Carers UK). 1.3 million people provide over 50 hours of unpaid care per week. Furthermore\, in 2020 the rate of children under 18 years in care went up to 67 out of 10\,000 (up from 60 in 2015) (CORAM). Every day another 6\,000 people take on a caring responsibility in the UK. \nAlthough caring can have many positive and rewarding aspects\, there are lots of reasons why caring can have an impact on your day to day life\, and why you may need support. This event aims to address some of the issues around this theme\, considering flexible working policies\, sign posting local expertise on caring\, and how KQ partners may be able to share best practise and support each other. \nOur Hybrid Events:  \nThe KQ’s Hybrid events will take place simultaneously in-person and via Zoom. \nThere will be two options when selecting to book a ticket: In-Person and Virtual. Please select the format in which you would like to attend the event. We have a limited capacity of in-person tickets for this event. SUMMARY:Income Inequality in the Knowledge Quarter
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets via Eventbrite here.  \n\n  \nIncome Inequality in the Knowledge Quarter \nAccording to the latest ONS Household Finances Survey\, the gap between the richest in society and the rest of the population has widened over the last 10 years. \nIslington has the 4th highest levels of income inequality in London\, and Camden is one of ten boroughs with the largest pay disparities – shockingly\, both boroughs have more than 1 in 3 children living in poverty (according to the most recent Trust For London Data). Across all UK regions\, the ethnicity pay gap was largest in London at 23.8% (ONS) and female employees were paid on average 16% less per hour than men in 2021 (London.Gov datastore). \nFor this special conference legacy event\, a panel of economists and policy experts will discuss the causes and impacts of pay and income inequality on KQ organisations and the area they call home. \nSo what steps can organisations take to tackle inequality within their own organisations? And how will these actions impact inequality across our area and beyond? \n  \nThis is a KQ conference legacy event\, brought to you in partnership with British Land. \n  \n\n\nOur Virtual Events:  \nThe KQ’s virtual events will take place via Zoom. You do not need to download Zoom software in order to participate – there is a web browser version which works perfectly well. Once you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive a link by email 48 hrs before the event. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with the KQ events manager Bhav (bhavit.mehta@bl.uk) or Mia (Mia.Johnson@bl.uk). \n\n

SUMMARY:KQ Private View: Slade 150
DESCRIPTION:Book via Eventbrite here.  \nKQ Private View: Slade 150 \nWhile we have to take a break from our in-person private views\, we are working with curators to bring the KQ’s cultural offering to the digital realm! Join us at 3pm on Wednesday 9th March for an online experience brought to you by the UCL Slade School of Fine Art and UCL Culture. \nThis year\, the Slade is celebrating 150 years of fine art teaching and research. From Stanley Spencer and Chila Kumari Burman to Rachel Whiteread and Michael Armitage\, Slade School of Fine Art has educated and trained generations of world-renowned artists since 1871. \nCurators\, Staff and Students from the Slade will offer an exclusive virtual Private View for the Knowledge Quarter\, showcasing their current artist-led exhibition SLADE 150: PAST\, PRESENT\, FUTURE. Students on programmes from BA to PhD level\, across all artistic disciplines\, explore ideas of tradition and heritage\, and ask how new generations can challenge and disrupt these. \nThe Private View will also showcase their parallel exhibition TESTING GROUND at the UCL Art Museum\, and PRINT PALS: THEN AND NOW – a print collaboration between the Slade and the National College of the Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, Pakistan. \n  \nAbout our speakers: \nNina Pearlman\, PhD\, is Head of UCL Art Collections at UCL. She works collaboratively at the intersection of research\, curating\, collecting\, arts management\, arts policy and innovation. She established Curating Equality at UCL\, a virtual platform for projects with UCL Art Collections that employ a collaborative\, interdisciplinary and poly-systems approach to gender equity in the arts and is a co-researcher on The Sloane Lab: Looking back to build future shared collections\, a multi-partner project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council under the Towards a National Collection programme. Pearlman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, board member of Craftspace\, and co-producer of the Women to Watch project for UK Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. \n\nAbi Ola is an MFA Fine Art 2021 graduate in the area of painting. She works with painting\, collage\, screen printing\, photography and performance. Combining autobiographical and collective histories she takes inspiration from old family clothes\, nature\, and tribal art as well as African and Oceanic textiles. Through the original patterns that emerge she seeks to represent her West African heritage and her life in the UK. Ola intentionally obscures the identities of the figures in her work to allow the audience to place themselves or their loved ones within the images she creates. Ola is one of two 2021 UCL East student artists in residence. \nInstagram – @abiolaartist & Twitter – @AbiOlaArtist \n\nLícia Santos is in the final year of her MFA in Fine Art in the area of painting. Her practice explores the body and nature through drawing\, painting and performance\, often drawing on her mixed Angolan and Portuguese heritage. Her work for Slade 150 engages for the first time with the practice of print\, making etchings based on life observations of her peers at the Slade. She is interested in how spaces influence the creative process and how artists find refuge in these and consequently in each other. In 2020 she graduated from Goldsmiths College\, was Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year series 7 and received the Slade’s Euan Uglow scholarship. In the year of her graduation from Goldsmiths College in 2020 she was recipient of the Slade’s 2020 Euan Uglow scholarship and participant in Sky Arts Portrait of the Year. \nInstagram: @licia_santos \n\nKorallia Stergides is in her final year of the MFA Fine Art in the area of media. She is an interdisciplinary artist based between London and Cyprus working with performance\, installation and media. Stergides interweaves autobiographical narrative into her work that explores the vital politics of care in an interdependent world and emphasises nonhuman agencies. Moments of public gestures of care toward nonhumans imprinted in public spaces and buildings hold particular interest. Her work for Slade 150 introduces for the first time object making alongside drawing and sound\, and takes as its focus the stray cat that transitions between its role as domestic and public ‘pet. \nInstagram: @aillarok \n  \nAbout Slade School of Fine Art at UCL \nSince its foundation in 1871\, following a bequest to UCL from Felix Slade\, the School has been a leader in fine art education\, fostering innovative\, interdisciplinary artistic and art research cultures. Its multiple histories have transformed art education\, research\, and practice\, both in the past and present\, nationally and internationally. \n  \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. SUMMARY:KQ Private View: The World of Stonehenge
DESCRIPTION:Book via Eventbrite here.\n\nJoin the KQ for this in person Private View\, in collaboration with the British Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformed by ground-breaking recent archaeological and scientific discoveries\, this landmark exhibition offers new insight on one of the world’s great wonders\, bringing the true story of Stonehenge into sharper focus than ever before. \nIn this special private view of their blockbuster exhibition\, the British Museum will reveal the secrets of Stonehenge\, shining a light on its purpose\, cultural power and the people that created it. \nFollowing the story of Britain and Europe from 4000 to 1000 BC\, you’ll learn about the restless and highly connected age of Stonehenge – a period of immense transformation and radical ideas that changed society forever. \nThe human story behind the stones reveals itself through a variety of fascinating objects. Among these are stone axes from the North Italian Alps\, stunning gold jewellery and astonishing examples of early metalwork including the Nebra Sky Disc – the world’s oldest surviving map of the stars. A remarkably preserved 4\,000-year-old timber circle dubbed Seahenge also takes centre stage in the show\, on loan for the very first time. All these objects offer important clues about the beliefs\, rituals\, and complex worldview of Neolithic people\, helping to build a vivid sense of life for Europe’s earliest ancestors. \nAbout The British Museum \nThe British Museum was founded in 1753 and opened its doors in 1759. It was the first national museum to cover all fields of human knowledge\, open to visitors from across the world. \nEnlightenment ideals and values – critical scrutiny of all assumptions\, open debate\, scientific research\, progress and tolerance – have marked the Museum since its foundation. \nThe Museum is driven by an insatiable curiosity for the world\, a deep belief in objects as reliable witnesses and documents of human history\, sound research\, as well as the desire to expand and share knowledge. \n\n\nOur Private Views:  \nThis KQ’s Private View will take place in person at the British Museum. SUMMARY:KQ Private View: The Eye As Witness\, Recording the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Please book via Eventbrite here. \nDiscover how images shape the way we remember history with The Eye As Witness – a major exhibition using creative technology to contrast Holocaust photos taken by perpetrators with the perspective of victims. \nThe Eye as Witness is an immersive multimedia experience examining Holocaust photography. It has been designed to make us question the motives behind the recording of historical events and to encourage critical thinking on racism\, hatred and ‘fake news’ today. \nTaking the instantly recognisable Nazi-propaganda images of sub-human victims in Nazi ghettos and concentration camps\, visitors are led to reconsider the images as persecuted and dignified humans living ‘everyday’ lives only days before the Nazis came to power. \nFeatured in the exhibition is an award-winning immersive virtual reality (VR) experience. This cutting-edge experience enabled visitors to enter a virtual environment and ‘step into’ a Nazi-produced Holocaust photograph taken in the Warsaw Ghetto.

SUMMARY:Craft School: A Summer of Playful Making
DESCRIPTION:Craft School: A summer of playful making\, is a chance for children and young\npeople to get making and be inspired by the Crafts Council Collection and\nbrilliant creations made by school students from across the UK. \nThis summer the Crafts Council Gallery will become a hive of activity where\nvisitors can create\, play\, and experiment with clays\, textiles\, paper\, and card at a\n‘making table’ and meet others who also love craft. There will be a free weekly\nworkshop held every Wednesday in August\, led by our friendly staff and skilled\ncraft educators. \nCraft School will display six winning entries from our national school’s competition\nCraft School: Yinka’s Challenge\, developed in collaboration with multi-\ndisciplinary British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori. Learners from across KS1 – KS4 were\ninvited to explore themes of play\, storytelling\, and empowerment through\nmaking. \nOut of the 100 entries that were submitted\, the judging panel selected six winners\nof the challenge including: the students of the lower primary class at Richard\nCloudesley Special School in Islington who were inspired by upcycling projects\nby Yinka Ilori to create a mobile using decorated old CDs for their classroom: and\nDiane Mwamikazi\, a key stage 4 student at Bury College who created a colourful\nand richly patterned miniature pavilion inspired by the clothing of her Congolese\nand Rwandan family members. Collectively\, these works celebrate making by\nyoung people and explore how craft can be a place for young makers to develop\nand reflect on their histories\, cultures\, and identities. \nAlongside these schools’ projects\, visitors will be able to handle and experience\ncraft by leading professional makers from our Collections. Each of these objects\nexplore ideas of materiality and play and include Colour Breeze#1 by\nmischer’traxler studio\, a 3-metre-long installation of paper-like circles which light\nup in a vibrant display of colours once visitors interact with them: leather bottles\nmoulded on to found objects by Simon Hasan: and wooden objects by Howard\nRaybould who was the head prop maker on the iconic film 2001: A Space\nOdyssey. \nThe Crafts Council believe that every child and young person has the right to\nexplore their own creativity through making. Making with their hands helps young\npeople to develop problem-solving and communication skills alongside practical \n̺ \nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England.\nskills of creating\, mending\, and repairing. Craft de-stresses\, empowers\, and\ncontributes to wellbeing and happiness. \nAs craft education is in steep decline in UK schools\, we have developed a teaching\nand learning framework ‘Make First’ which is driven by learners’ own interests.\nMake First encourages getting craft materials into students’ hands allowing for\nopen-ended and instinctive making through material exploration and\ndevelopment. Craft School is an opportunity for parents\, caregivers\, and teachers\nto connect with the Crafts Council. \nCraft School is the perfect place for families\, children\, and young people to\ndiscover more about craft\, have a go themselves and start their own journey to\nbecoming a maker in a friendly and inclusive space. \nCraft School is part of the Crafts Council’s Make! Craft! Live! programme. A\nseason of nationwide exhibitions\, learning events\, fairs\, and digital activities that\ncelebrates the value of craft to empower\, enrich and connect our society.\nCrafts Council Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday\, 11am – 5pm. Drop-in or\nbook tickets in advance at\nhttps://crafts-council.arttickets.org.uk/ \nGraphic design for Craft School is by Daly & Lyon. \nQuotes \n“I am trying to really encourage young people in schools to tell their own personal\nstories within design\, whether it’s about family or friends or experiences. I think\nanyone trying to develop their voice in their making\, my first tip would be to be\nproud of your story and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable in your work”\nYinka Ilori\, Crafts Council Trustee\, and co-creator of the national school\ncompetition Craft School: Yinka’s Challenge. \n“We hope Craft School will inspire more people to experience varied materials\,\nlearn new skills\, produce pieces full of pride and find ways to express themselves.\nBut most importantly\, we want more people to benefit from the magic and joy\nmaking brings.”\nNicky Dewar\, Director of Learning and Skills

SUMMARY:Human Resources - Creativity as Renewable Energy in a Time of Scarcity
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition as part of the London Design Festival\, at Central Saint Martins we employ curiosity\, creativity and imagination to rethink and remake our realities. \nWhat happens when we expand our definition of what a resource might be – when we move from practices of extraction and acquisition to drawing on our own inner resources? \nHere we share work by our graduating students who – through different disciplines and approaches – propose an alternate world of sufficiency and generosity powered by a human kind of renewable energy.
