SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: The People in the Gallery and Made in North Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at House of Illustration\, where you will get to view two new exhibitions. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at The People in the Gallery\, the final exhibition by their Illustrator in Residence Christy Burdock and Made in North Korea: Everyday Graphics from the DPRK; the House of Illustration’s blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Christy Burdock: The People in the Gallery \nChristy Burdock’s work tells the complex story of the everyday; she immerses herself in microsocieties then layers her studies with metaphor and imagination. This exhibition will feature House of Illustration visitors\, staff and artists in large-scale observations of her six months spent as Illustrator in Residence. \n“Burdock’s drawings immediately struck me with their sense of narrative and atmospheric rendition. I was engaged by the groups of figures which are mysterious but believable like people in dreams. Delicate and unusual colour is used to good effect in a personal way.” Chloe Cheese \nAbout Made in North Korea: Everyday Graphics from the DPRK \n“A rare glimpse into an isolated graphic culture” Financial Times\n“Offers a new perspective by looking at everyday life there” Design Week \nHundreds of original objects including food packaging\, ticket stubs and stamps\, together with hand-painted propaganda posters and comics\, give an unprecedented insight into everyday life in the DPRK. The exhibition displays the collection of Nicholas Bonner\, the foremost expert on North Korean graphic culture\, tourism and film\, who has led tours to the country for 25 years. \n“This collection represents common objects given beautiful status by the hand-drawn graphics from North Korea’s most creative designers. Some of the work is elaborate but the basic designs too should not be overlooked – minimalistic simplicity creating beautifully rhythmic artwork.” Nicholas Bonner \nRegister via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity?
DESCRIPTION:AccessHE is pleased to open registration for the third event in the London Student Outcomes series – Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity?  \nSupported by the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) the event will be chaired by Dr Darryll Bravenboer\, Director of Apprenticeships and Skills at Middlesex University. \nAre Degree Apprenticeships the key to “smashing the Level 3 glass ceiling” of apprenticeships? Can they offer debt-free progression to higher level jobs for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and deliver a real widening of participation in higher education? Or should we be concerned about who might be missing from new uses of levy funds? This event will explore these questions and more by sharing emerging best practice in this area\, bringing together employers\, universities and other organisations to explore some of the key challenges and opportunities for promoting social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships in London. \nSpeakers \nWe look forward to welcoming Sarah-Louise Collins and Stella McKnight from the University of Winchester to present an update on their HEFCE Degree Apprenticeship Development Fundproject looking at enhancing social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships. Other speakers will be confirmed soon. \nAccessHE will present research on Degree Apprenticeship provision and uptake in London\, and there will also be an opportunity for discussions about the challenges facing the capital in trying to connect social mobility and Degree Apprenticeships together. \nWho should attend? \nWe anticipate attendees will include those in business development\, employer engagement\, student recruitment and widening participation within higher education institutions\, as well as employers and other organisations with an interest in this area. We hope the event will inform new collaborative work in 2018-19 to address Degree Apprenticeship opportunities in London. \nAttendance is FREE for AccessHE members and £25 for non-members. \nThis is the third event in the AccessHE London Student Outcomes series\, exploring four key emerging themes in widening participation across the full student lifecycle. The final event in the series will look at post-HE progression for learners from under-represented groups. Please visit the link above for more information and to register your interest in attending. \nIf you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact Sam Turner\, AccessHE London Programmes Coordinator\, at sam.turner@londonhigher.ac.uk. \nClick here to book for this event.

SUMMARY:500 years of medicine. The future: The end of AIDS is up to us
DESCRIPTION:Join the Royal College of Physicians for a special free lecture\, part of the season marking its 500th anniversary\, reflecting on the history and future of medicine\, society and health.\nIn this event\, Dr Nneka Nwokolo focuses on the advances made in the diagnosis\, prevention and treatment of HIV over recent years\, and how these major changes have not yet entered the public’s consciousness. \nToday\, people who receive effective treatment are not infectious and unable to pass the virus on to others\, including sexual partners and unborn babies. Meanwhile\, the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)\, medication taken by people at risk of catching HIV\, has had ground-breaking effects on transmission in many parts of the world. \nWhilst stigma and availability of services remain major issues\, the means are now in place to halt the spread of the virus and ensure that people with HIV have life expectancies comparable to the general population. \nDr Nneka Nwokolo is a consultant physician at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where she trained in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine. Her research interests include the prevention of HIV transmission\, and she has been involved in initiatives that have resulted in a significant reduction in HIV diagnoses in men who have sex with men in London. She is also interested in the sexual and reproductive health of women\, and particularly HIV positive women. She is a passionate advocate for women’s access to HIV prevention strategies including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). \nDr Nwokolo will argue that the end of AIDS could be within reach\, but success lies in our hands. \nProgramme \n6pm – Arrival refreshments (tea and coffee)\n6.30pm – Lecture starts\n7.30pm – Lecture finishes \nSpaces at this event and the others in the 500th series are strictly limited and we anticipate them booking out well in advance. \nRegister via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter: Community Champions Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter (KQ) would like to invite you to the launch of the Community Champions project. The launch event will bring Knowledge Quarter partners together with local charities and community groups based across Camden and Islington\, to encourage partners to develop collaborative projects around the themes of youth\, employability\, environment\, wellbeing and nexus. This project has initially been developed by KQ Community Engagement sub-group in discussion with community representatives\, however the launch brings the opportunity to share the programme more widely. \nKQ Community Champions aims to increase community participation and involvement with the resources of Knowledge Quarter partners. Over the next year the goals are to bring together organisations working in similar themes in community engagement\, to catalyse mutually beneficial networking and partnerships within the area. Come to the launch to hear more; you will hear case study examples of existing great practice in community-KQ partnerships\, and meet people from charities and KQ partners\, who work in the area. You can find out about the scope of the theme areas\, and register your organisation to be involved in events focussed on each theme. \nWe will also be asking for input from attendees to shape the skills covered by capacity building workshops which will take place during the year. \nRegister via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Public Commemoration and Women’s History
DESCRIPTION:How are women remembered\, commemorated and celebrated in public? How is this different from historical commemorations of men? What forms do these commemorations take? Why do public commemorations of women provoke such debate\, and what are the legacies of these public memorials? \nOur cities\, towns and streets are rich with memorials and monuments dedicated to the achievements and lives of men\, but women are significantly unrepresented in our public acts of commemoration. At this special panel discussion\, feminist activists and scholars will examine this significant ‘representation gap’ and debates around the place of women in public history and memory. \nWith \nCaroline Criado Perez\, activist and campaigner (Campaigns include: ‘Keep a Woman on English Banknotes’ and ‘Put a Statue of Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square’) \nDr Rebekah Higgitt\, university lecturer and member of the English Heritage Blue Plaques Panel \nSarah Jackson\, founder of the East End Women’s Museum \nProfessor Rebecca Surender\, Oxford University\, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Diversity and head of Oxford’s ‘Diversifying Portraiture’ campaign

SUMMARY:Real to Reel: The Craft Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Real to Reel\, the UK’s first film festival devoted to making\, returns to Picturehouse Central\, Piccadilly\, London\, this spring and promises to be one of the highlights of London Craft Week. The event\, produced by Crafts magazine and the Crafts Council\, runs over three evenings from 8-10 May. \nWhile nights one and two contain the event’s usual mixture of short documentaries on makers\, animations and music videos from around the world\, the third evening is devoted to a talk from Mackinnon & Saunders\, puppet maker extraordinaire\, whose credits include Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks\, Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie as well as Fantastic Mr Fox\, directed by Wes Anderson. The company has also worked on a string of children’s TV classics such as Bob the Builder\, Postman Pat and Rasta Mouse. \nThe event will include the premiere of the digitally remastered version of the Oscar nominated animation The Sandman. As Burton once said of them: ‘They do such beautiful work\, very sensitive and textural; you really do believe the characters are alive.’ It promises to be a must-see for fans of animation.\nMeanwhile highlights to look out for from the opening two nights include: \n\nMade In London: Chris Keenan. Directed by William Scothern\, the documentary is the story of how this brilliant potter went from being a jobbing actor into one of the most successful ceramists in the country via an apprenticeship with Edmund de Waal.\nAlan Kitching: A life in letterpress. A short film by Alice Masters that goes behind the scenes to explain the history and thinking of this legendary figure of British craft.\nOur Common Humanity. An insight into the work of the brilliant Costa Rican glass artist Juli Bolaños-Durman directed by Diego Almazan de Pablo and the maker herself.\nEdmond. The BAFTA-winning stop motion animation by Nina Gantz focusses on the life of a young man as he contemplates suicide. Surreal\, macabre and poignant in equal measure.\nMarble Machine. Created by Swedish folktronica band\, Wintergatan\, the music video features an instrument that might have been created by Heath Robinson and uses over 2000 marbles.\nKeith Harrison\, Joyride. A documentary directed by Stephen Gammond illustrates the making of the artist’s ambitious Jerwood Open Forest commission. His idea is to launch a ceramic replica of the last Rover 75 to leave Birmingham’s Longbridge car plant Evel Knievel-style off a timber ramp in Cannonck Chase Forest. But will it all go to plan?\n\nFor the first time the festival has a headline sponsor\, Killik & Co.\,an independently owned investment house.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Rodin and the art of ancient Greece
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece \n\n\nIn 1881 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin visited London for the first time. On a trip to the British Museum\, he saw the Parthenon sculptures and was instantly captivated by the beauty of these ancient Greek masterpieces. \nLike many archaeological ruins\, the Parthenon sculptures had been broken and weathered over centuries\, but Rodin took inspiration from the powerful expression that they conveyed through the body alone. He even removed the heads and limbs from his own figures to make them closer to the broken relics of the past. By doing so\, he created a new genre of contemporary art – the headless\, limbless torso. \nA hundred years after his death\, see a selection of Rodin’s works – including his iconic sculptures The Thinker and The Kiss – in a new light. This major exhibition will feature original plaster\, bronze and marble examples of many of Rodin’s sculptures on loan from the Musée Rodin in Paris. For the first time\, they will be shown alongside some of the Parthenon sculptures that the artist so admired\, as well as selected objects from his own collection of antiquities. \nExperience the magnificent sculpture of a modern master\, and explore how the ancient world shaped his artistic vision

SUMMARY:Placeless people: writing\, rights and refugees
DESCRIPTION:In 1944 the political philosopher and refugee\, Hannah Arendt wrote: ‘Everywhere the word “exile” which once had an undertone of almost sacred awe\, now provokes the idea of something simultaneously suspicious and unfortunate.’ Exiles from other places have often caused trouble for ideas about sovereignty and the law and nationhood. But the meanings of exile changed dramatically in the 20th century\, often leaving human rights law struggling to catch-up. This lecture discusses how writers such as Arendt\, Orwell\, Simone Weil\, Dorothy Thompson\, and Samuel Beckett responded to the mass displacements of the last century\, and anticipate many of the issues we confront today. Sceptical about the ability of human rights to legislate for refugees\, yet committed to universal justice\, these writers challenge us to imagine new terms for placelessness in modern times. Chaired by Professor Phillipe Sands\, QC at Matrix Chambers\, it features contributions from writer and broadcaster\, Professor Lyndsey Stonebridge. This event will be followed by a reception \nThis event is FREE but advance booking is required.

SUMMARY:Charles Dickens: Man of Science
DESCRIPTION:In 1839\, the writer and physiologist George Henry Lewes visited Charles Dickens at Doughty Street and examined his bookshelves. He left accusing Dickens of being ‘completely outside philosophy\, science\, and the higher literature’. For over 150 years\, it was thought that Charles Dickens was either not interested in science\, or was downright hostile to it. But Dickens’s science was not the science of books or learned institutions; for Dickens\, science mattered when it transformed lives by curing disease or cleaning streets\, or opening up new vistas of wonder in a humdrum world. \nCharles Dickens: Man of Science aims to reveal Dickens not only as a scientific enthusiast\, but as the key communicator of science in the Victorian age. Displaying his writings alongside artefacts\, instruments\, and texts of the developing sciences\, we share the story of Dickens’s friendships and scientific passions. Journeying through some of Dickens’s favourite sciences – geology\, thermodynamics\, chemistry\, and medicine – we reveal that what made him a great writer was precisely what made him a man of science. \nFind out more here

SUMMARY:Sea - Jodie Carey at the Foundling Museum
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by the Foundling Museum\, Jodie Carey has created three new site-responsive installations in response to the Foundling Hospital story. Displayed within the exhibition gallery and amongst the historic Collection\, these monumental pieces are imbued with a sense of remembrance and emotional trace. \nDrawing inspiration from the eighteenth-century fabric tokens left by mothers with their babies as a means of identification – one of the few tangible connections between mother and child – Sea is formed of hundreds of swatches of fabric that have been dipped in liquid clay and fired. These delicate ceramic fragments cover the exhibition gallery floor. Upstairs\, two monumental works cast in the earth explore ideas of memory and time. Eighteen life-size plaster sculptures crowd the Anteroom\, while in the Foyer a delicate and slender bronze sculpture stands floor to ceiling. \nCarey’s abstract and organic works seek to make visible the fragility of life and human relationships\, to acknowledge the absent presence of the thousands of children who passed through the Foundling Hospital\, and to reflect on the elemental drives at the heart of its story; love\, loss\, and survival. \nJoin the conversation #JodieCarey.

SUMMARY:Richard Woods - Upgrade
DESCRIPTION:On 1 June\, in a parking space in East London\, North London\, Richard Woods create Upgrade – a month-long site-specific installation that engages with issues of housing and urban regeneration. \nLike Wood’s contribution to the 2017 Folkestone Triennial\, Upgrade uses the form of a graphic three-dimensional caricature of a house to bring a fresh perspective to its urban location. \n\n‘I had been filling a skip with all the leftover material that we had used to build the Holiday Homes on the Folkestone Harbour Arm\, and it struck me how potent an image it made – having bits of window or chimney poking out of the skip. In the studio\, we chatted about whether it would be possible to expand the idea and make it into an object – and then out of the blue Lee emailed and introduced the project. We quickly realised we’d both had the same idea. It was the easiest pitch I have ever had to make…’

And where better to host this than one of London’s quirkiest community edible gardens: The Skip Garden. \nThis evening will take you on a journey through the history of kitchen gardening from the fanciful knot gardens of stately homes\, the geometry of the French potager and the vegetable patches that some people believe won WW2. \nStart your evening with a complimentary summer drink and explore the beautiful garden before being seated under the London sky (weather permitting – or otherwise one of their cosy indoor spaces). \nOn the menu... \n\nThe knot garden: potato & herb bread knots w/ ‘smoked’ butter\nDig for Victory garden: Bombay potato scotch quail’s egg with pickles\nHerb garden: Parsley soup with yoghurt and tomato oil\nPotager garden: Cauliflower ‘cups\,’ cauliflower & quinoa rice\, slow roast heritage tomatoes and woodland mushroom ‘mille feuille’\nWitches garden: Basil pannacotta with summer’s first berries\n\nFinal menu may change slightly as it will be dependant on what they can get their hands on\, it will be full of seasonal and organic produce\, and it will all be vegetarian. Global Generation can cater for most dietary requirements but please make them aware of these at the time of booking as they may not always be able to accommodate them on the day.

SUMMARY:Destination Marketing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter has a growing cultural and educational offer which includes 10 higher education institutions\, 21 cultural institutions\, 22 museums and galleries and 35 libraries and archives. From some of the oldest and most well-known institutions in the world including the British Museum and Sadler’s Wells to new innovative institutions such as the House of Illustration and Lethaby Gallery. \nThe Knowledge Quarter has been scoping the potential for joint destination marketing by Knowledge Quarter partners to increase the number of visitors to Knowledge Quarter institutions and customers for Knowledge Quarter products. \nOver the summer we have recruited a Marketing and Strategy Masters student to work with Knowledge Quarter partners on a potential joint marketing strategy. We would like to invite you to a workshop where we will present some of the early evidence of our mapping and desk research to stimulate discussion on the day. \nThe workshop will be interactive and (we hope) enjoyable. We hope very much that you will be able to come.

SUMMARY:London 1938: Defending 'Degenerate' German Art
DESCRIPTION:The Wiener Library’s summer 2018 exhibition explores the history and context of an exhibition held in 1938 at the New Burlington Galleries in London entitled Twentieth Century German Art. \n2018 marks the eightieth anniversary of this exhibition\, which was the most prominent international response to the Nazi campaign against ‘degenerate’ art. It remains the largest display of twentieth-century German art ever staged in Britain. The show featured over three hundred examples of modern German art\, by exactly those artists who had faced persecution in Germany: the exhibition in London in 1938 was an attempt to defend them and their work on a world stage. \nThe Wiener Library’s exhibition tells the story of the Third Reich’s campaign against ‘degenerate’ art and this response in London in 1938. The exhibition features a number of the original artworks from the New Burlington Galleries’ exhibition\, including works by Emil Nolde and Max Slevogt\, presented with the stories of their lenders in 1938. The show will also include items from The Wiener Library’s unique archival collections. \nFind out more information here.
