SUMMARY:Concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport
DESCRIPTION:The Wiener Library is delighted to announce details of a special memorial concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport. The concert will take place in the beautiful sanctuary of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue\, London\, on 22 November 2018\, one day after the official anniversary of the Kindertransport debate in Parliament. \nThe evening will begin with a drinks reception at 7pm\, with special guest Dame Esther Rantzen DBE. The concert that follows will consist of an exclusive\, one-off performance by two acclaimed German musicians who have come specially for this occasion: cellist Friederike Fechner\, and composer\, conductor and pianist Mathias Husmann. \nThe performance promises to be very poignant as Friederike Fechner has recently helped to unite the descendants of the Blach family\, originally of Stralsund\, Germany\, through her research. Multiple branches of the Blach family were torn apart by Nazi persecution\, and many members of the family did not survive the Holocaust. Three of the children survived by coming to Britain on the Kindertransport. Another descendant\, AJR trustee Gaby Glassman\, is co-organising this special evening. \nTickets are £30\, but Knowledge Quarter staff members get 20% discount. SUMMARY:Upgrading the Quality of Life in Urban Environments across the Muslim World
DESCRIPTION:The third in a series of ten public events interrogating how architecture\, planning and contemporary creativity enhance and affect both quality of life and sustainability in a range of Muslim contexts\, held in the iconic Aga Khan Centre.\nClick here to register for free. \nThis lecture brings together three strands; the challenges faced in enhancing the quality of urban life for Muslim communities\, which are then presented through fifteen projects that have received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since its inception about forty years ago. The projects are either urban in nature\, or architectural projects with a significant urban impact. Finally we will look at an open online course that has been developed for the Education Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) that addresses the topic of enhancing the quality of life for Muslim communities through these fifteen projects. \nThe coming together of these three subjects: enhancing the quality of urban life\, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture\, and open online courses\, makes for an interesting combination. Thousands of projects have been nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since its inception in 1977\, and over 110 of these have received the Award. These projects have been extensively documented\, and provide a highly valuable database regarding the evolution of the built environment across the lands of Islam (and also of non-Muslim areas with sizable Muslim populations) over the past four decades. The use of this wealth of knowledge and information as an educational tool\, however\, has unfortunately been rather limited. This open online course is among the very few courses that draw on this wealth of knowledge as an educational tool and uses it for the exploration of a very important subject. Moreover\, by developing an open online course for this subject\, access to the course is not limited to the students of a single university\, usually an elite Western university\, but is provided to students everywhere. \nSpeaker \nDr Mohammad al-Asad is an architect and architectural historian. He is the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment in Amman. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, and history of architecture at Harvard University before taking on post-doctoral research positions at Harvard and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. \nHe is a member of the board of directors of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. He also had served as the Coordinator of the International Academic and Curatorial Committee for the Discover Islamic Art project of the Museum With No Frontiers\, and was a member of the Amman Commission\, which served as an advisory body for the Mayor of Amman. \nAl-Asad was a project reviewer for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture between 1989 and 2007\, and has been a member of the Award’s Steering Committee for its 2010\, 2013\, 2016\, and 2019 cycles.

Sign up to our updates here. \nAbout Raids\, Rations and Rifles  \nIn the Metropolitan Boroughs of Islington and Finsbury (now a part of Islington)\, from 1914 until 1918\, many young men lost their lives on the battlefields of the First World War. Life on the home front was also a challenging and sometimes frightening experience. \nAlmost one million people lost their lives from Britain and its dominions during the war. Nearly 10\,000 of whom were linked in some way to Islington. \nSoldiers from local battalions\, including those from the Honourable Artillery Company\, the Finsbury Rifles and ‘Islington’s Own’ fought on the Western Front\, at Gallipoli and in Palestine. Five Islington-born soldiers were each awarded the Victoria Cross during the conflict. Islington sailors were to lose their lives at the Battle of Jutland and over 150 servicemen from Islington and Finsbury fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Women from Islington also served abroad and some were never to return home. \nResidents from Islington and Finsbury experienced hostilities and hardships without even leaving the borough during the war. Islington was to feature in the first and last enemy air raids on London. An entire German spy ring was uncovered and an alien internment camp holding 750 internees was established in the north of the borough. Local companies\, women and children did more than their bit to help the war effort. And\, libraries were turned in hospitals\, food offices and recruiting centres. \n‘Raids\, Rations and Rifles: Islington during the First World War’ focuses on these themes\, remembering those who served on the front line\, as well as exploring everyday life in the borough as the conflict was brought unavoidably to people’s homes and lives. \n  \n

Join the Royal College of Physicians museum for a special evening focused on the struggle for female medical equality in the 20th century. \n\n\nFeatures illuminating short talks\, an ‘in conversation’ with Dr Lesley Hall and Dr Leslie Brock\, and curator-led tour of the acclaimed exhibition ‘This vexed question: 500 years of women in medicine’.\nAt the beginning of the 20th century a member of staff at the London School of Medicine for Women said: ‘Medicine is a jealous mistress and those who would win her favours must not worship at any other shrine.’ \nWhile women had been included as doctors on Britain’s new medical register since the 1860s\, the larger question of what it meant to be a woman and a doctor took on new urgency in the early 1900s. \nCould a woman be a doctor and a suffragette?\nShould women doctors model themselves on male clinicians or be something completely different?\nDid gender matter at all? \nThis ‘in conversation’ evening with Dr Lesley Hall and Dr Claire Brock will reflect on activism\, gender and the tumultuous turn of the 20th century for women physicians and surgeons. DESCRIPTION:“What is my key message to future generations? Tolerance.”\n– Elsa Shamash\, Kindertransport refugee \nTo mark the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport\, discover the stories of six of the Kinder (child refugees) in their own words. \nIn 1938-39 the British government allowed 10\,000 Jewish and other ‘non-Aryan’ children from occupied Europe to come to Britain. This remarkable rescue operation became known as the Kindertransport. Now in their 80s and 90s\, the Kinder have given their testimony through the medium of film. You can also see personal objects and artefacts that they brought with them from their homelands. \nAs children they escaped violence and persecution\, but went through painful separations\, and their integration into British society was not always straightforward. This exhibition tells the story of rescue as well as stories of rupture\, loss and regret. \nThe Jewish Museum also has an extensive programme of talks\, lates and family events relating to this exhibition which can be found here.

DESCRIPTION:Come and learn more about four local change-makers. \nThe evening will start with drinks and light refreshments. Each non-profit will make a 6 minute pitch for up to £3000. After the pitches people have the opportunity to give to the projects that appeal to them. \nThe four non-profits are all supported by Camden Giving’s KX Fund\, they are: \nAction Youth Boxing Intervention is a free fitness for children and young people in Somers Town\, it combines boxing tutorials with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and supports over 200 young people a year. \nC4WS help homeless people in Camden rebuild their lives be providing support including Winter Night Shelter and employment opportunities. \nLittle Village Camden works a bit like a foodbank\, but instead of food they provide quality baby products and clothing donated by local families. They are gifts from one family to another. \nSpeak Street is a pop-up language café and a positive response to negativity towards immigrants in the UK. They offer free English language clasess to immigrants\, migrants and asylum seekers. \nYour first donation is your £10 ticket\, 100% of this will be given to non-profits pitching on the night. DESCRIPTION:This National Poetry Day\, Poet in the City transports you around the Knowledge Quarter and invite you to explore the themes of change and transformation through an exciting programme of live poetry performances and discussion. \nFrom the societal shifts in attitude and the activists that instigate them\, to the blossoming biological patterns of the natural world and the alternating architecture we build upon it\, they’ll be using poetry to interpret the meaning of change throughout our environment. \nMake That Change\nGreat Court\, British Museum \nAcclaimed American playwright Bonnie Greer and South African poet Leeto Thale celebrate both Black History Month and and National Poetry Day by taking a look through time to explore the role of activism in instigating change. \nBonnie Greer has campaigned for diversity in the Arts from the inside out and now invites you to look at pivotal points of progress and activism in her own life through readings of the poems that inspired her struggles and excerpts from her second novel  Entropy . Following Bonnie’s readings\, South African poet and artist Leeto Thale performs poems in honour of Nelson Mandela to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. \nMeet a Scientist: National Poetry Day Special\n Deconstructing Patterns Exhibition\, Francis Crick Institute 1-3pm \n \nExplore the Francis Crick Institute as we unpick the billions of interlacing patterns threading together the natural world and enter the extraordinary universe of biological change. \nFrom before we are born our cells shift and change\, replicating and transforming in time\, reacting to their ever-changing environment. This National Poetry Day we join the Francis Crick Institute’s ongoing investigation into intricate cellular patterns and transformations\, with poet Helen Mort and two scientists on hand to bring Crick science to life and to answer any questions that you might have about life in the lab. \nIf These Walls Could Talk\n UCL Quad\, Gower Street\, 3-6pm \nAs times change and buildings remain\, how do the stories cemented within their walls influence how we live today? \nEstablished in 1826\, UCL has a long and varied history that is etched into its architecture. Many of the university’s spaces and buildings used today are named after academics and architects from the past. \nAs part of National Poetry Day\, poet and former industrial archaeologist Jo Bell\, and poet and playwright Yomi Sode will explore how our ideas of ourselves and our lives are shaped by the space around us.  One brick at a time\, they deconstruct the societal effects of architecture\, and ask how important it is to decolonise our environments to create a safe space for all through an afternoon of live poetry performance and discussion. \nIn partnership with UCL Culture.

SUMMARY:ThUNDDAR & IGT Networks Speed Dating event - The Institute of Physics
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Physics are bringing people together to solve some problems via creative thinking in a sandpit/speed-dating style session.  \nParticipants will not need prior knowledge of the problem area to participate\, but must demonstrate an enthusiasm for working at the interface between disciplines. It will be an excellent opportunity to identify unique collaborative projects in multidisciplinary groups formed of clinicians\, engineers and basic scientists. \nRegistration deadline: 27 September 2018. Register here. \nAbout the day: \nPresentations: \nThe half-day event will focus on how engineering and physical sciences (EPS) innovation can help improve patient care and will begin with presentations by clinicians. Each clinician will describe one critical clinical challenge they are facing within their field. Each presentation will give an overview of current treatments and the limitations in current state-of-the-art technology which\, if improved\, could lead to better patient care. \nNetworking session: \nFollowing on from the presentations\, participants in the room will have the opportunity to speak to each clinician to discuss how they might contribute the project. Participants will rotate every ten minutes between each presenting clinician. \nProposals: \nAt the end of the rotation participants will join a group and then work together to produce an outline project proposal.  Each team will develop a short-term objective and a long-term vision around their chosen challenge\, which will be captured in a 1-page proposal and 5-minute oral presentation – their “pitch”. Assessment criteria will be provided on the day. \nEach group will then present their pitch to the judging panel. Funding will be allocated by a panel of experts in clinical and engineering/physical sciences research and potentially a representative from the EPSRC. The pump priming funding should be used to support the project at an early stage and help produce high quality publishable pilot data to enable a future funding application. \nUp to three groups will be awarded up to £50k for a project over 6 months which will contribute toward RA Salary and travel/subsistence. A small amount of funding (no more than £5K) may be used on consumables/equipment. Each Network together with the National Physical Laboratories (NPL) will contribute £50K. \nOrganised by the IOP Physical Acoustics Group\nSponsored by the EPSRC Therapy Ultrasound Network for Drug Delivery & Ablation Research (ThUNDDAR) and the EPSRC Image-Guided Therapies UK (IGT) Network+.
