SUMMARY:A Secret Beauty: The Spirit of Japanese Maki-e (11 July - 21 September)
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of the Lacquer Work of Koyanagi Tanekuni.\nLacquer has been used in Japan for almost 10\,000 years to protect and decorate objects\, such as wood\, bamboo\, earthenware\, and textiles.  Its resistance to moisture and degradation make it a useful coating for utensils\, storage containers\, furniture\, sculpture and wooden architecture. \nAs a decorative medium\, lacquer has had a high status in Japan.  The lacquerware decorated in gold and silver particles known as makie\, which was first introduced in the 8th century\, is a culmination of Japanese aesthetic sensibility and purity.  The value and prestige of lacquerware is shown by the status of its patrons\, which included emperors\, nobilities\, shoguns and daimyos. \nFind out more here.\nAbout Koyanagi Tanekuni\nThe artist\, Koyanagi Tanekuni studied makie and Japanese aesthetics under three holders of the title Ningen kokukō (‘Intangible Cultural Property’ also known as ‘Living National Treasure’). As a renowned makie artist for the past 50 years\, Koyanagi has been a regular exhibitor at the “Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition”\, as well as contributing works to many group and one-man exhibitions. He has also actively been involved in the conservation and preservation of national cultural properties and treasures in Japan\, such as the preservation of the Chuson-ji temple\, a UNESCO World Heritage site.   For half a century\, he has produced both traditional and contemporary lacquer work maintaining the highest technical and artistic standards. \nAbout the Brunei Gallery\nThe Brunei Gallery is an exciting venue in central London that hosts a programme of changing contemporary and historical exhibitions from Asia\, Africa and the Middle East. The Gallery’s aim is to present and promote cultures from these regions and to be a student resource and public facility.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Sustainability Roundtable: The Plastic Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Plastic is everywhere.\nWhen we talk about the plastic crisis we no longer simply mean unsightly plastic bottles lying half submerged along river banks\, or the plastic bags caught in trees\, or the six-pack yokes that trap unfortunate birds. Plastic is ubiquitous; It is in the air we breathe\, the water we drink and the food we eat. \nOur Sustainability Roundtable on the subject will examine the problem from several perspectives. We will hear from professionals on the front lines of the crisis; recycling experts\, scientists\, and individuals pushing for change in their organisations. \nThe roundtable format allows for ideas to be shared between Knowledge Quarter partners. Has your organisation cut single-use plastics from its canteen? Is your organisation implementing a more effective recycling policy? Join our roundtable and share your insights with fellow KQ partners. Our intention is for everyone to leave with a greater appreciation of what can be done and what should be done in your organisation\, as well as a greater awareness of the problem to share with friends and family. \nProgramme: TBC \n24 September 2019\, 08:30-10:30\nInstitute of Materials\, Minerals and Mining  \n*Please note: This event was previously scheduled to take place on Wednesday 11 September 2019. It has been changed to Tuesday 24 September 2019 owing to speaker availability.  \nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. Please register with your organisational email. We understand their is enormous interest in this issue\, and all staff are welcome to attend. However\, please consult with your organisation’s Sustainability/Green teams prior to registering to make sure your organisation is not overrepresented. \nSee here for a full list of our partners. If you do not work for a Knowledge Quarter partner\, but would like the opportunity to share your experience and knowledge in this field with our group\, please register your interest via email. \nWhy attend?\nMeet other Green and Sustainability leads and individuals passionate about our environmental impact in the Knowledge Quarter. Share best practice and ideas around reducing plastic in your organisation. Learn about and collaborate on initiatives to clean up our environment.

SUMMARY:Sustainability and Climate Change: TFL Masterclass on efficient deliveries
DESCRIPTION:Deliveries in and out of the Knowledge Quarter have a substantial environmental footprint. It’s time we did something about it.\nTransport for London will lead a hands-on\, action-planning masterclass for Knowledge Quarter partners to get under the skin of the problem.\nDeliveries contribute to the congestion on Euston Road\, reduce air quality (35% of all road-based Nitrogen Oxide emissions in Greater London are from freight!) and impact the wellbeing of our employees and students\, not to mention the fact that inefficient deliveries are probably costing your organisation time and money. \nSo\, what’s your freight footprint? And how can we in the Knowledge Quarter reduce it by working together? \nIn this morning masterclass\, hosted by Impact Hub King’s Cross\, TfL will introduce simple but effective solutions from their Efficient Deliveries toolkits for business. The masterclass will explore best practices with your deliveries and\, in interactive workshop format\, help you identify opportunities for your organisation to save time and money\, improving air quality and the public realm in the process. \nIdeas the masterclass will explore couple inspiration with simple\, achievable steps that have been proven to make a tangible difference. These include: \n\nreducing the impact of personal deliveries\nstreamlining when business waste is collected\nand receiving deliveries outside of the busiest times.\n\n\n  \nThe masterclass will be delivered by Clive Wanstall and Libby Gibson from TfL’s Travel Demand Management team. Libby and Clive have extensive experience working with businesses from small independents\, to large chains such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s to reduce congestion across London\, supporting progressive change in deliveries and servicing\, alongside active travel and smart commuting. The have recently delivered workshops to businesses along Old Street\, Fitzrovia\, Hatton Garden\, Aldgate\, Waterloo and Southwark. \nTo attend the workshop\, you must first declare your interest with a Knowledge Quarter team member. \nTime and Place\nFriday 27 September\, 9:00-11:00.\nImpact Hub King’s Cross. \nWho should attend?\nThis workshop is aimed at managers and team leaders from within our membership working in Estates\, Logistics\, Waste\, Procurement and Sustainability. \nWhy attend?\nGet better connected with individuals from different organisations in the area who are working in the supply chain\, whether they are from Estates\, Logistics\, Procurement\, Waste or Sustainability. \nAnd if that isn’t tempting enough\, how does saving the planet sound? \n\nDid you know…?\nBond Street businesses reduced waste vehicle movements by 94 per cent\, and experienced a 76 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent and nitrogen oxides following implementing a delivery reduction scheme.\n\nWe believe individuals working within the supply chain have enormous power to affect positive change in the way organisations confront the Climate Emergency. The Knowledge Quarter is a test-bed for innovation\, a model of collaborative working\, so join us as we come together to reduce our collective carbon footprint. \n

SUMMARY:Archives\, Digitisation and Copyright - A KQ Breakfast Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Archives are at the heart of many Knowledge Quarter organisations. For the public they are the backbone of research\, pivotal in widening debate and deepening our understanding of culture\, heritage and history.\nWhile technology and the digital environment offers a panacea for the long-term preservation of records\, it has also changed society’s expectations about access to those records. \nThis morning event will provide a forum in which professionals from across the KQ who are working on or interested in learning more about archiving in the digital age can discuss the myriad challenges and opportunities a digital archive presents\, as well as the earthly delights of being an archivist. SUMMARY:Data Diversity in Research: A call to action for concrete solutions
DESCRIPTION:The data gap issue is not new\, as Caroline Criado Perez demonstrated in her recent book\, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ – from stab vests to medical trials – the “one-size-fits-men” approach puts lives at risk. \nIn a recent blog\, BenevolentAI described how in 1992 the dosage for insomnia medication Zolpidem was based on research made up of predominantly male test subjects. It was only after 700 reports of impaired driving and road accidents that dosage for women was reconsidered. Equally\, diversity from an ethnic perspective is underrepresented. In 2014\, 86% of the clinical trials participants are white according to a study published in Nature. This means that patients may experience different side-effects or may fail to respond to treatments altogether. \nA huge part of the population is still left out of research\, yet\, we are living in an age of great innovation. New technologies are empowering scientists and researchers with previously unimaginable capabilities\, enabling greater discoveries. It is the right time to finally tackle the data-gap issue and work towards a better understanding of human behaviour offering equal chances to various populations to get relevant treatments and care. \nWe’re bringing this event together to provide a forum in which pharma industries\, academia\, institutions\, research groups and private companies based in the Knowledge Quarter can come together\, discuss the challenges of data diversity in research (particularly medical research)\, combine expertise\, and initiate projects to lead to more diversity in data. \nAgenda\n8:30 -9:00 | Networking Breakfast \n09:00 – 9:30 | Panel discussion \nThought leaders in science and tech discuss the challenges of data diversity that we face currently and help materialise possible tangible solutions through engagement and discussion with wider stakeholders in the meeting. \nChair: Adepeju Oshisanya\, BenevolentAI \n\nMaria Nelson\, Senior Head of Innovation Practice\, Digital Catapult\nJackie Hunter\, CE Clinical and Strategic Partnerships BenevolentAI\nRob Wilson\, Senior Regulatory Consultant\, DLRC\nDiane Harbison\, CEO Decipher Analytics\nDawn Duhaney\, Product Manager\, Wellcome Trust\n\n09:30 – 10:30 | Workshop \nWe will invite the audience to reflect on ideas to increase the diversity of data in the research space. \nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. Please register with your organisational email on eventbrite here. SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Diversity Roundtable: Intersectionality in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Our Diversity Roundtable series is aimed at professionals actively working on improving diversity in their organisation. The next meeting in this series will explore the theme of intersectionality in the workplace. \n What is intersectionality? \nThe term ‘Intersectionality’ was coined in 1989 by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw to describe how race\, class\, gender\, and other individual characteristics “intersect” with one another and overlap. A person with an intersectional identity can also be described as “standing in the middle of the road being hit by cars from many sides”. \nA gay man may have to deal with homophobia in the workplace. A black man may have to deal with racism in the workplace. But a black gay man will have to deal with homophobia and racism\, often at the same time. It is often the case that he will face racism inside the LGBT community and homophobia in the black community. Similarly\, a disabled lesbian Muslim will have to deal with ableism\, homophobia\, Islamophobia\, racism and sexism. \nHaving an intersectional identity often generates a feeling that someone does not completely belong in one group or another\, and can lead to isolation\, depression and other mental health issues. \nWhy attend this event? \nWe hope this event will help KQ partners acknowledge intersectionality\, gain a better understanding of the terminology and explore how individuals and KQ organisations could create more inclusive environments where people with overlapping identities can succeed at all levels. \nWho should attend? \nThis event is ideal for: \n– Senior management \n– HR and recruitment professionals \n– People representing BAME\, LGBTQ+ and similar networks \n– People developing diversity and inclusion strategies \n– Anyone who identifies themselves as having intersectional identities or wishes to learn more about this. \nDiversity Roundtables are held bi-annually. Chatham House rules apply\, so partners can openly discuss advances made since a previous roundtable as well as any challenges they face in this area. \nPlease email: Kacie.Shoulders@bl.uk to secure your seat at the table. Let us know if you would like to present a Lightning Talk at the Breakfast\, or if you would like to host a roundtable.

SUMMARY:KQ Private Tour: Writing in Times of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter staff and friends are welcome to join our private evening view of Writing in Times of Conflict at Univeristy of London’s Senate House Library. Enjoy privileged out-of-hours access to the exhibition in the company of lovely\, like-minded individuals living and working in the Knowledge Quarter. \nThe exhibition begins in 1919 just after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles marked the formal end of the First World War\, which led to the establishment of contemporary peace movements. It explores some of the most significant military\, environmental and economic conflicts that ensued right up until 2019\, touching on current political issues such as Brexit\, economic inequality\, and climate change. \nThere are many bold stories by well-known writers on display. These include one of the first editions of John Maynard Keynes’ The Economic Consequences of the Peace\, a rare signed copy of in our time by Ernest Hemingway\, a letter from Virginia Woolf describing the WWII bombers flying overhead\, and a first edition of Carol Ann Duffy’s thought-provoking play My Country: a Work in Progress. These are complemented by unique photographs and documents\, such as one of the few surviving photostatic copies of the ‘Nazi Black Book’ written in 1940\, listing peace activists and politicians to be targeted by the Gestapo. \nTold through Senate House Library’s global collections\, Writing in Times of Conflict combines a selection of narratives by writers\, journalists\, politicians and local communities from Africa\, Latin America and Europe. \nBook your tickets here
