DESCRIPTION:The Francis Crick Institute and 1A Arts present the premiere of a short film made by local young people \nHolborn Community Association’s 1A Arts team and the Francis Crick Institute are delighted to invite Knowledge Quarter partners\, staff and friends to a special drinks reception at the premiere screening of a short film made by local young people. \nThroughout the summer (on weekends and school holidays)\, a group of young people aged 14-18 years old took part in 1A Arts’ summer filmmaking project. \nInspired by research taking place in the Crick’s Polarity and Patterning Networks Laboratory\, the young filmmakers created a production company – Kaleiko – then wrote\, directed and produced a short film. \nThe film will be shown for the first time in the Crick’s brand new\, state-of-the-art auditorium on Thursday 14th September. DESCRIPTION:West Euston Partnership\, Fantasy High Street and Old Diorama Arts Centre present: \nA free one day family event using arts to celebrate 40 years of arts\, architecture and community life in Euston and King’s Cross. \nThe Cloud Nine Festival is returning to Cumberland Market after the highly successful inaugural festival on the site last year. Created and delivered by a partnership of three local organisations: West Euston Partnership\, Fantasy High Street and Old Diorama Arts Centre\, the festival will once again offer a day of free arts activities\, performances and workshops to local residents and other members of the community. \n2017 marks an important anniversary for many local organisations\, including West Euston Partnership which will be celebrating its 25th birthday and Diorama Arts Centre which will be turning 35 years old. So Cloud Nine’s theme this year is celebrating local heritage\, the community and the changing face of Euston and King’s Cross over the last 40 years. Interactive art installations will invite visitors to share stories about where they live and play games; our free arts and crafts workshops will run throughout the event and are suitable for families and children of all ages and our performance stage will include dance and music from local community groups. DESCRIPTION:FutureLearn\, the leading social learning platform\, is delighted to support National Coding Week’s goal to give adults the opportunity to learn some digital skills with a beginners coding class for adults. \nWho should come? \nThis evening class is aimed at adults who are complete beginners to coding; no experience is required. With an emphasis on giving practical coding experience\, the session will be focused on getting you to code right there and then with the goal being to produce your own webpage by the end of the two hour session. \nWhat to expect? \nExpect a highly interactive session with group and individual work\, as well as plenty of coding pros on hand for advice and help on following all steps throughout the two hour session. First\, you’ll get to see the code behind your favourite websites and understand how that code can be manipulated. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr Jacqueline Riding\, Basic Instincts explores Georgian attitudes to love\, desire and female respectability through the radical paintings of Joseph Highmore.  \nA highly successful artist and Governor of London’s Foundling Hospital\, Joseph Highmore (1692-1780) is best known as a portrait painter of the Georgian middle class. However\, during the 1740s his art radically shifted\, reflecting his engagement with the work of the new Foundling Hospital and its mission to support desperate and abused women. Highmore’s involvement with the Hospital sparked engagement with issues around women’s vulnerability to sexual assault and society’s unwillingness to support them\, culminating in a work of exceptional power\, The Angel of Mercy (c.1746). \nBasic Instincts is the first major Highmore exhibition for 50 years and explores this decade of disruptive social commentary in his art. Amongst the works on display are four paintings from a series of twelve\, inspired by Samuel Richardson’s international bestseller\, Pamela\, or Virtue Rewarded\, explicitly making reference to the abuse and sexual violence at the core of the novel. On public display in the UK for the first time as part of Basic Instincts is a remarkable painting that still retains the power to shock. The Angel of Mercy depicts a desperate mother in the act of killing her baby\, with the distant Foundling Hospital presented as the alternative. DESCRIPTION:The Foundling Museum displays a series of five previously unseen sculptures by acclaimed artist Rachel Kneebone\, providing a resonant counterpoint to their exhibition Basic Instincts. \nRachel Kneebone is a British artist whose intricate works address and question the human condition. Raft of the Medusa’s tumbling limbs and fractured swags are at once coquettish and sinister; their gleaming white surfaces and exquisite detail belie scenes of collapse and dismemberment. \nUsing porcelain\, a delicate material traditionally associated with Rococo exuberance and fine tableware\, Kneebone subverts viewers’ expectations. Visibly exploiting the material properties of porcelain\, she deliberately allows her work to distort and crack in the kiln\, inviting the viewer to question the relationship between strength and vulnerability. \nThis display in the Museum’s historic rooms distils and abstracts the Foundling Hospital’s suppressed narratives of sexual desire\, emotional damage\, and female strength\, whilst also referencing ideas of displacement\, refuge\, and resilience. In the centenary anniversary year of Robert Lowell’s birth and the publication of the New Collected Poems of Marianne Moore\, Poet in the City partner with Faber Members to explore the processes of revision of these two seminal poets\, and the impulse of humanity to revisit the past. Bringing together talk\, performance\, and psychology\, Dr. Fiona Green\, Dr. Susie Orbach\, Declan Ryan and Geoffrey Streatfeild interrogate the human psyche through the work of these great American poets. \n________________________________ \nSpeakers: \nDr. Fiona Green is a Senior Lecturer in American Literature at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Jesus College. Specialising in American poetry and history\, Fiona is the author of publications such as ‘Marianne Moore and the Hidden Persuaders’\, in Writing for The New Yorker: critical essays on an American periodical\, and ‘Form in Modernist Poetry’\, in The Cambridge History of Modernist Poetry\, eds. Alex Davis and Lee M. Jenkins. \nDr. Susie Orbach is a psychotherapist and writer. With Luise Eichenbaum\, Orbach created the Women’s Therapy Centre in 1976 and the Women’s Therapy Centre Institute\, a training institute in New York\, in 1981. She has been a consultant for The World Bank and the NHS. Her groundbreaking first book\, Fat is a Feminist Issue\, remains one of the most widely read texts of the British women’s liberation movement. \nDeclan Ryan was born in Mayo\, Ireland and lives in London. His debut pamphlet was published in the Faber New Poets series in 2014. He reviews regularly for the TLS and Los Angeles Review of Books. Recently\, his essay on Robert Lowell’s work was published on the Faber website to commemorate his centenary. \nGeoffrey Streatfeild is an English actor and has worked extensively in film\, television\, stage\, and radio. As well as starring in hit BBC series Spooks and The Thick of it\, Geoffrey’s notable film and TV roles also include The Other Boleyn Girl and Kinky Boots. DESCRIPTION:“Everything that people thought they knew about the German occupation of the Channel Islands is – at best – partial and – at worst – inaccurate\,” explains co-curator Dr. Gilly Carr on the motivation for a new exhibition at The Wiener Library. \nDuring the German occupation of the Channel Islands 1940-1945\, many thousands of people were persecuted\, including slave labourers\, political prisoners and Jews. SUMMARY:Restless Shadow: Dickens the Campaigner Exhibition (9 May to 29 October 2017)
DESCRIPTION:Charles Dickens was a novelist who addressed social ills in his fiction. He was also a journalist and activist who boldly and imaginatively campaigned to improve the lives of the most desperate and overlooked in Victorian society. \nThe exhibition Restless Shadow explores a largely unknown and under-rated body of Dickens’s work that speaks plainly to social justice with energy and relevance—both then and now. It reveals his keen interest in ‘street level’ problems along with other Victorian reformers such as Florence Nightingale and Angela Burdett-Coutts. It shows the practical\, hands-on solutions which flowed from his campaigns. \nDickens was especially powerful in pioneering new forms of investigative reporting and satirical exposé. As a young journalist and shorthand-writer with the pen-name ‘Boz’\, he honed a peerless style of urban description\, combining humour\, pathos and a heightened kind of graphic realism. SUMMARY:History Day 2017
DESCRIPTION:Senate House Library and the Institute of Historical Research Library will give history buffs a thrilling Halloween experience at their fifth History Day on 31 October. \nThis unique event for undergraduate and postgraduate students\, early-career researchers and anyone interested in history\, brings together libraries\, archives and history organisations from London and beyond. Items relevant to Halloween will be highlighted. \nIt will culminate in an open fair at Senate House that is an essential one-stop shop for all those interested in historical research. \nMore than 30 organisations are planning to join this year’s celebration of history\, which was first conceived in 2014. They range from the Science Museum and the Royal College of Physicians to the Black Cultural Archives\, the Geological Society and the German Historical Institute. \nThe day will also include three panel discussions on topics selected to support the research process. The first session will introduce the principles and practices of digital history\, while the second will explore the various aspects of discovery in libraries and archives. The final is led by Professor Sarah Churchwell\, the School of Advanced Study’s public engagement chair\, who will explore public history and how practitioners are communicating history to new audiences. \nThe event\, which is free and open to all\, is an opportunity for attendees to question the librarians and archivists responsible for the myriad of rich research collections. During the later trip he embarked on a photographic expedition to Mount Sinai\, following the route of the Israelites as recorded in the book of Exodus\, and photographing the traditional biblical sites that he encountered on his journey. This work became the book project he never finished. Boissonnas in Egypt focuses on the photographic work for both books\, visually exploring the complex histories of the newly formed ‘modern’ state (following Britain’s unilateral declaration of Egyptian independence) and the photographer’s own search for inspiration in the deserts of Sinai.
