Followed by a wine reception for all attendees and speakers.\n– Saturday 24 June\, 10am – 6.30pm \n________ \nFeminist Emergency\nBirkbeck Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with British Comparative Literature Association\, Birkbeck Gender and Sexuality (BiGS)\, the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research\, and Mapping Maternal Subjectivities\, Identities and Ethics (MaMSIE) \nThis major international feminist conference emerges out of a shared sense that feminism today is confronted with a set of acute challenges to which it urgently needs to bring new resources and critical insight. Austerity policies\, increasing social inequality\, the general assault on collective policies of social welfare\, the changes imposed on health care\, the needs of an ageing population\, the increasing worldwide visibility of violence (domestic violence\, rape as a weapon of war\, ‘honour’ killing\, female genital mutilation)\, all of these intensifying trends are placing women under renewed pressure and are heightening the need for women to reflect\, speak and find new means of expression. At the same time\, the rise of populism in the context of Brexit in the UK and the election of Donald Trump in the US\, with the growing racism that has accompanied both\, are contributing to a climate where bigotry and misogyny are granted new permission to parade themselves in the media and on the streets. Opening and closing the conference with poetry and literary readings by renowned creative writers from across the globe\, our aim is to demonstrate the central role of cultural expression in representing\, illuminating and resisting this new climate in which women find themselves today. \nThe conference aims to address these issues\, and their implications for feminist thought\, activism and creativity\, and in relation to public policy in the UK and globally. To that end\, we are especially committed to fostering a unique atmosphere of dialogue and exchange which will cross the boundaries between scholars\, practitioners and literary writers\, between generations of feminists\, across different ethnic and cultural groups\, between the trans-movement and feminism\, and between critical thinking and the demand for social change.  The Conference will therefore gather together academics\, literary scholars and poets\, professionals\, policy makers and feminist activists in the realm of health care\, education\, domestic labour and sexual violence. It will also be interdisciplinary\, working across sociology and social history\, economics\, politics\, psychoanalysis\, sexuality and gender studies\, literature\, film and culture. Internationally renowned writers and thinkers such as NourbeSe Philip\, Jackie Kay\, Leila Ahmed and Drucilla Cornell will bring to the conference voices out of which we will aim to establish the forward looking nature of modern feminist expression and thought. \nKeynote Speakers: \n\nPatience Agbabi (Poet\, performer\, mentor and Fellow\, Oxford Brookes University)\nLeila Ahmed (Harvard University\, via Skype)\nDrucilla Cornell (Rutgers University)\nM. SUMMARY:T.E.N.S.E Exhibition Central Saint Martins Innovation Management 2017
DESCRIPTION:T.E.N.S.E – Temporary Environment for Navigating Systems of Emergence \nA divisive world. Balancing paradoxes in political\, economic\, social\, and environmental spheres is no easy feat. There are no singular anecdotes for these macro-level tensions\, but managing the emergences created from these crucibles is the role of an innovation manager. \nWithin this year’s exhibition\, Innovation managers investigate universal paradoxes which give rise to Tensions; Tensions which individuals and organisations confront everyday. Profit//Preservation\, Order//Chaos\, Physical//Digital\, Now//Future. \nCHAOS AND ORDER \nRapid development in today’s world forces us to challenge the existing order. Industries are constantly evolving\, and a select few of these organisations spark revolution\, corroding traditional hierarchy. In this era\, companies can employ survival strategies by toying with chaos to construct a new order to champion tomorrow. \nDIGITAL AND PHYSICAL \nWe are witnessing emergent technologies and practices that are enabling and empowering people to create whole new value chains. Collisions herald new realities\, presenting opportunities and threats for both organisations and individuals. While new technologies commence\, the physical remains\, constructing a variety of new mediums to continue practice. We are posed with questions on how to embrace these emergences\, and reflect on their necessity. \nNOW AND THE FUTURE \nTechnology allows for greater accessibility to information. Modern day documentation and archiving is a cherished activity of this generation. We believe we are constructing more informed futures. Time is losing its value\, making it hard for individuals and organisations to understand how to live in present and prepare for the future. Identities are at stake. \nPROFIT AND PRESERVATION \nHuman nature has a long history with greed. Within hyper-capitalism profit and success are monetary; other values are often undermined. The discourse on profit is being explored\, with a focus on inclusivity and awareness of the world-at-large. Globalism can work as a benefit and a detriment to preserving world resources. Can we intrinsically motivate organisations and ourselves to compromise? Do we need to? \nThese tensions\, as we understand\, will never disappear but continue to form an uncomfortable state of being ‘in-between’. Innovation Managers are the professionals crazy enough to try to make sense of the uncertainty within those grey areas. \nThe class of MA Innovation Management 2017 would like to invite you to: \nT.E.N.S.E Exhibition\nWed 21st – 25th June\nWed – Thurs: 12.00 – 20.00\nFri: 12.00 – 15.00\nSat – Sun: 12.00 – 17.00 \nWe open our doors to you. \n_____________________ \nThe MA Innovation Management Degree Show final event T.E.N.S.E sessions on Friday 23 June 18.00 – 21.30 at Central Saint Martins. Four inspiring guest speakers will tell their stories and bring the degree show concept and work to life. Attendants will have the opportunity to network and socialise with a diverse group of individuals. Additionally\, get to know Innovation Managers better and a greater understanding of the breadth of the course. \nFor more information please visit: tensebymaim.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:The Academic Book of the Future - Report Launch
DESCRIPTION:Is academic book production outstripping demand? Can library budgets keep pace with the ever growing book production? Will academic books become a new frontier of Open Access? Are we ready to move away from the physical codex? Will digital book formats transform arts and humanities research? SUMMARY:Conservation Lecture: The Paradise of Eternal Spring
DESCRIPTION:The Churches Conservation Trust is delighted to invite colleagues from Knowledge Quarter organisations to a lecture on the discovery of a rare 15th century Rose Brass. Hear from Rachel Morley as she discusses where her search for the brass took her and how\, after more than 30 years in hiding\, it was returned back home in St Mary’s Church\, Edlesborough. \nRose Brasses are engraved plaques fitted in church floors. While these symbols of the Virgin Mary were common features in medieval English churches\, today only a few have survived. This makes the discovery of the Edlesborough Rose Brass unusual and exciting. \nPlease email Jenny Ringo\, Membership Manager at jringo@thecct.org.uk to reserve a place.

SUMMARY:Health Data: Fit or Failing?
DESCRIPTION:Do we value our privacy more than new medical discoveries?  \nData-driven technology developments are transforming our medical knowledge and giving medical professionals new insights into patients’ wellbeing. Data gathering technology such as fitbits helps monitor heart rates\, blood sugar levels and sleep cycles\, whereas IBM’s A.I. system\, Watson\, gives scientists insight into how genes affect our health. \nIn the 21st century\, medical developments are relying on data more than ever before. How can we balance the potential benefits of using personal data for healthcare research\, with the ethical dilemmas they provoke? Should we allow companies to use medical data for technological developments and interventions that may improve our lifestyles\, or does this contravene our privacy rights? Data analysis could help predict epidemics and optimise clinical trials\, but offers an ethical difficulty for medical professionals. \nJoin the discussion with an expert panel in the Knowledge Centre at The British Library. \nThe Data Debate series is a collaboration between The Alan Turing Institute\, The British Library and the Economic and Social Research Council. \nRegistration: please click here to book your place.

SUMMARY:Digital Library of the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:In response to the tragic loss and ongoing threat to the cultural heritage of the Middle East through destruction\, looting\, and illegal resale\, and firmly believing in the educational\, social\, and economic benefits created by access to cultural material. The Digital Library of the Middle East (DLME) at The Aga Khan University will bring together a publicly available\, online platform for noteworthy Middle Eastern collections from around the world. \nCommitted to international cooperation in the region and around the world\, we propose a discussion that outlines the platform\, the creation process\, and the importance of collaboration. We are focused on how the DLME can serve the many communities of interest\, from advanced scholars to schoolchildren. In addition\, we will provide a coherent approach to the cataloguing\, description\, documentation\, and digitization of hidden collections\, including providing funding for that critical task. \nThe talk is to introduce the Digital Library of the Middle East to collaborators in the local community; we propose a presentation by DLME Co-Founders Charles Henry of the Council on Library and Information Resources and Peter Herdrich of the Antiquities Coalition at the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations. An invited audience of interested library\, museum\, archive\, and scholarly professionals would convene to hear about and offer comment on the DLME. \nFor more information and to book your place click here.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: The American Dream at the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at The American Dream: pop to the present the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? Sign up to our updates here. \nAbout The American Dream \nThe past six decades have been among the most dynamic and turbulent in US history\, from JFK’s assassination\, Apollo 11 and Vietnam to the AIDS crisis\, racism and gender politics. Responding to the changing times\, American artists produced prints unprecedented in their scale and ambition. \nStarting with the explosion of pop art in the 1960s\, the exhibition includes works by the most celebrated American artists. From Andy Warhol\, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg to Ed Ruscha\, Kara Walker and Julie Mehretu – all boldly experimented with printmaking. Experience this extraordinary history through their eyes. \nTaking inspiration from the world around them – billboard advertising\, global politics\, Hollywood and household objects – American artists created highly original prints to rival their paintings and sculptures. Printmaking brought their work to a much wider and more diverse audience. \nThe sheer inventiveness and technical ingenuity of their prints reflects America’s power and influence during this period. Many of these works also address the deep divisions in society that continue to resonate with us today – there are as many American dreams as there are Americans. \nThis exhibition presents the Museum’s outstanding collection of modern and contemporary American prints for the first time. These will be shown with important works from museums and private collections around the world. \nRegister: Please go to our Eventbrite page to book a place.

SUMMARY:Addressing Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:New Knowledge Quarter partner Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust would like to invite KQ partners to a free introductory presentation where we will be discussing common mental health difficulties\, mental wellbeing and stigma. We will also be considering some ways that employers could start to address this often overlooked issue in the workplace. \nMental health problems remain the most common reason for absence in the workplace. This costs UK industry billions of pounds per year. Stigma attached to living with mental health difficulties remains a significant barrier to people sharing their struggles\, and means it remains an often neglected topic. \n\nWork-related mental ill health costs the UK economy up to £26 billion every year through lost working days\, staff turnover and lower productivity.\n60% of employees say they’d feel more motivated and likely to recommend their organisation as a place to work if their employer took action to support mental health.\n1 in 4 people suffer from a common mental health problem.\n\nCome along and hear from Dr Beverley Flint and Dr Lisa Cohen\, Clinical Psychologists\, Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust. \nIf you wish to secure a place\, please email us at wellbeing@candi.nhs.uk or call us on 020 3317 6466. \nImage Credit – witsu.ie

It consists of approximately 6\,000 paintings\, drawings and sculptural objects\, produced between 1946 and 1981 by the residents of Netherne\, a long-stay British mental hospital\, under the guidance of professional artist Edward Adamson. \nThis exhibition displays selected works by eight people\, chosen for their distinctive visual styles and particular histories. For the first time\, these works will be showcased under the artists’ names: JP Senitt\, Thea Hart\, Helen Greig\, Mary Bishop\, Martin Birch\, Rolanda Polonsky\, Gwyneth Rowlands and Ron Hampshire. \nDr Fiona Johnstone\, Associate Research Fellow in Art History at Birkbeck said: “By presenting these individuals as artists\, rather than as un-named and undifferentiated psychiatric patients\, and framing their objects as artworks\, the exhibition aims to highlight the aesthetic\, personal and historical dimensions of the collection\, whilst remaining sensitive to its medical and therapeutic contexts.”   \nAdamson pioneered the use of art therapy for those living with mental illness. He was initially engaged with Netherne to assist with research into the relationship between mental illness and creativity. His job was to encourage the patients to paint\, with the resulting works transferred to clinicians for analysis. After the study ended in 1951\, Adamson established an open studio where residents were allowed to come and paint freely. He rejected the diagnostic focus of the earlier experiments\, convinced that the very process of art making was therapy enough\, and that creative expression could be a tool to help people find their way back to wellness. \nThe collection interweaves a range of narratives\, including the history of the post-war mental institution\, the development of psychiatric practice in the UK\, and the origins of art therapy as a profession. It also tells a number of individual stories\, including that of Adamson himself\, and of the people who produced work under his guidance. \nThis exhibition is supported by a Wellcome/ Birkbeck ISSF Public Engagement Award. It has been curated by Dr Heather Tilley and Dr Fiona Johnstone in association with Birkbeck’s Centre for Medical Humanities.  \nFurther information can be found on the exhibition website: https://mramovesinmysteriousways.wordpress.com \nImage 1: Image caption: Helen Grieg\, The Foetus / Rebirth. SUMMARY:Close the deal: The Art and Science of successful negotiation
DESCRIPTION:When: 15-19 May 2017 and 5-9 June 2017 \nCost: £4250. 20% off for Knowledge Quarter partners \nNegotiations are ubiquitous. As individuals we negotiate on a daily basis whether we are making decisions with friends and family or sealing a professional deal at work. Negotiations can range from the seemingly trivial to the very serious. \nIn business\, negotiations occur at every level; between employers and employees\, within and between firms\, between firms and government bodies\, across sectors and industries and between domestic organisations and foreign ones. And so on. Negotiations take place on matters of policy and finance – indeed negotiations can – and do – occur on anything and everything where more than one party – or “player” – is involved. \nIs this course aimed at you? \nEveryone is involved in some type of negotiation on a daily basis\, and so this course will be beneficial to a wide range of people from different organisations and backgrounds. \nIt may be of special relevance to senior managers and c-suite colleagues as well as to lawyers and individuals who are involved with commercial litigation\, dispute resolution and mergers. \nColleagues who work in sales\, purchasing and/or procurement will also find this course useful\, as will consultants who work client-side and officials who are involved in BREXIT and other policy-related negotiations. \nNo prior knowledge of game theory or economics is required and everything will be taught in plain English. Where technical concepts and tools are introduced\, this will be done cognisant of the fact that it is a non-specialist audience and will be delivered by people who have experience of doing exactly this. \nNot only that; this course is led by top Warwick University staff from a leading Department of Economics\, ranked in the top 3 in all major UK league tables; and the course will also have sessions delivered by some world class practitioners. \nFor more information and to book yourself a place then please go to the University of Warwick website.
