SUMMARY:Igor and Moreno: Idiot-Syncrasy at the Place
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss your chance to see the critically acclaimed Idiot-Syncrasy as it returns to The Place for one night only. \nWe started with wanting to change the world with a performance. We felt like idiots. \nThen we danced a lot. We jumped. We called on the folk traditions of Sardinia and the Basque Country. We sang. We jumped some more. We committed. \nNow we promise to persevere. We promise to be open. We promise to do our best. \nIdiot-Syncrasy is a dance performance by Work Place Artists Igor Urzelai and Moreno Solinas that uses jumping – both literally and metaphorically – to explore our capacity to persevere\, care and hope. This show is both playful and serious in how it welcomes audiences\, whilst gently demanding that they too are responsible for noticing change and difference. \nGet your tickets here. You can also stay after the show for a Q&A with the artists. \nPhoto credit: Alicia Clarke

SUMMARY:Shifting Dimensions: National Poetry Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:This National Poetry Day\, Poet in the City transports you around the Knowledge Quarter and invite you to explore the themes of change and transformation through an exciting programme of live poetry performances and discussion. \nFrom the societal shifts in attitude and the activists that instigate them\, to the blossoming biological patterns of the natural world and the alternating architecture we build upon it\, they’ll be using poetry to interpret the meaning of change throughout our environment. \nMake That Change\nGreat Court\, British Museum \nAcclaimed American playwright Bonnie Greer and South African poet Leeto Thale celebrate both Black History Month and and National Poetry Day by taking a look through time to explore the role of activism in instigating change. \nBonnie Greer has campaigned for diversity in the Arts from the inside out and now invites you to look at pivotal points of progress and activism in her own life through readings of the poems that inspired her struggles and excerpts from her second novel  Entropy . Following Bonnie’s readings\, South African poet and artist Leeto Thale performs poems in honour of Nelson Mandela to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. \nMeet a Scientist: National Poetry Day Special\n Deconstructing Patterns Exhibition\, Francis Crick Institute 1-3pm \n \nExplore the Francis Crick Institute as we unpick the billions of interlacing patterns threading together the natural world and enter the extraordinary universe of biological change. \nFrom before we are born our cells shift and change\, replicating and transforming in time\, reacting to their ever-changing environment. This National Poetry Day we join the Francis Crick Institute’s ongoing investigation into intricate cellular patterns and transformations\, with poet Helen Mort and two scientists on hand to bring Crick science to life and to answer any questions that you might have about life in the lab. \nIf These Walls Could Talk\n UCL Quad\, Gower Street\, 3-6pm \nAs times change and buildings remain\, how do the stories cemented within their walls influence how we live today? \nEstablished in 1826\, UCL has a long and varied history that is etched into its architecture. Many of the university’s spaces and buildings used today are named after academics and architects from the past. \nAs part of National Poetry Day\, poet and former industrial archaeologist Jo Bell\, and poet and playwright Yomi Sode will explore how our ideas of ourselves and our lives are shaped by the space around us.  One brick at a time\, they deconstruct the societal effects of architecture\, and ask how important it is to decolonise our environments to create a safe space for all through an afternoon of live poetry performance and discussion. \nIn partnership with UCL Culture.

SUMMARY:ThUNDDAR & IGT Networks Speed Dating event - The Institute of Physics
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Physics are bringing people together to solve some problems via creative thinking in a sandpit/speed-dating style session.  \nParticipants will not need prior knowledge of the problem area to participate\, but must demonstrate an enthusiasm for working at the interface between disciplines. It will be an excellent opportunity to identify unique collaborative projects in multidisciplinary groups formed of clinicians\, engineers and basic scientists. \nRegistration deadline: 27 September 2018. Register here. \nAbout the day: \nPresentations: \nThe half-day event will focus on how engineering and physical sciences (EPS) innovation can help improve patient care and will begin with presentations by clinicians. Each clinician will describe one critical clinical challenge they are facing within their field. Each presentation will give an overview of current treatments and the limitations in current state-of-the-art technology which\, if improved\, could lead to better patient care. \nNetworking session: \nFollowing on from the presentations\, participants in the room will have the opportunity to speak to each clinician to discuss how they might contribute the project. Participants will rotate every ten minutes between each presenting clinician. \nProposals: \nAt the end of the rotation participants will join a group and then work together to produce an outline project proposal.  Each team will develop a short-term objective and a long-term vision around their chosen challenge\, which will be captured in a 1-page proposal and 5-minute oral presentation – their “pitch”. Assessment criteria will be provided on the day. \nEach group will then present their pitch to the judging panel. Funding will be allocated by a panel of experts in clinical and engineering/physical sciences research and potentially a representative from the EPSRC. The pump priming funding should be used to support the project at an early stage and help produce high quality publishable pilot data to enable a future funding application. \nUp to three groups will be awarded up to £50k for a project over 6 months which will contribute toward RA Salary and travel/subsistence. A small amount of funding (no more than £5K) may be used on consumables/equipment. SUMMARY:Facts vs. Fake News: Who Decides What is True?
DESCRIPTION:We live in a world of potential misinformation\, of fake news and of powerful communications media (and often social media) that can be misappropriated. As some people turn their backs on experts and traditional information sources\, technology increasingly plays a crucial role in our search for the truth. So how have we ended up here\, and how do we know which information and what sources to trust? \nWhat are the political\, economic\, and social consequences of an attention- and algorithmically-driven society? And what is the role of academia\, research and science\, in a world where increasing numbers of people appear to reject scientific rigour in favour of whichever narrative simply reinforces their world and political view? \nJoin an expert panel of publishers\, journalists\, researchers and tech professionals in a lively discussion about these issues at this SSP Regional Event\, hosted at Springer Nature’s London campus. \nThe event is FREE\, and open to everyone interested. Wine\, beer and nibbles will be provided! \nTopics will include: \nHow do you know which information and what sources to trust? \nWhat is the role of journalists and the press in preventing false information from being published and shared? \nAre publishers giving enough prominence to rigorously assessed\, peer-reviewed research? \nHow are the ‘softer subjects’ of academic publishing distinctly suited to address these nuances in an increasingly ‘black-and-white’ world? \nWhat really is “data literacy”\, and how can we improve it? \nDoors: 5:30 pm\nTalks and Q&A: 6:30-7:45 pm\nClose: 8:30 pm \nRegistration is required\, as this is a free event and space is limited – register here.

SUMMARY:Ladies of Quality & Distinction at the Foundling Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Foundling Museum present a landmark exhibition highlighting the hidden stories of women in the Foundling Hospital’s history.\nMarking 100 years of female suffrage\, Ladies of Quality & Distinction resets the focus of the Foundling Hospital story\, revealing portraits and stories of the remarkable women who supported both the establishment and the running of London’s Foundling Hospital. Despite its male face\, women permeate every aspect of the Hospital story; as mothers\, supporters\, wet nurses\, staff\, apprentice masters\, artists\, musicians\, craftsmen and foundlings. Yet for almost 300 years\, history has placed these women as a footnote to the story. \nThis exhibition brings these overlooked stories to the fore. Discover portraits of the ‘ladies of quality and distinction’ who in 1735 signed Thomas Coram’s original petition to King George II calling for the establishment of the Foundling Hospital. Displayed together for the first time\, these paintings replace the portraits of male governors in the Picture Gallery. \nDownstairs in the exhibition gallery\, the lives of the women who supported the day-to-day running of the institution are brought to life. Highlights include Mrs Prudence West\, a female inspector and the only woman to run a branch Hospital; Miss Eleanor Barnes\, one of the earliest female Governors; and Mrs Elizabeth Leicester\, an early matron of the Foundling Hospital who oversaw some of its most challenging years.

SUMMARY:‘This vexed question’: 500 years of women in medicine
DESCRIPTION:“Is there not a much better thing for women than to be ‘medical men’ and that is to be medical women? Has not the cart been put before the horse in this women’s medical movement?” \n Florence Nightingale\, 1871\n\nWhen thinking of female doctors\, most people’s minds turn to 19th century pioneers such as Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. This view\, however\, masks a much longer and richer story of women in medicine stretching back through time. \nFemale apothecaries\, herbalists\, writers of medicinal recipes\, midwives – and of course doctors – have all worked within a male-dominated world for many centuries. Yet their roles have often been purposely obscured and frequently provoked fierce debate. \nThis September England and Wales’ oldest royal medical college\, the Royal College of Physicians\, marks its 500th anniversary with a major new exhibition that confounds prevailing notions of female participation in the medical professions and wider society. ‘This vexed question’: 500 years of women in medicine runs from 19 September 2018 to 18 January 2019. \nTaking its title from the comments of a progressive Victorian male medical student who lamented the physical violence with which some of his peers reacted to the ‘vexed question’ of women training to be doctors\, the exhibition explores the intriguing stories\, and battles\, of famous and forgotten female figures from more than half a millennium of medical practice. Highlights of the exhibition include: Britain’s first female doctors?\, Women persecuted for practising medicine and Midwives and apothecaries. \nAs well as a whole range of events including walking tours\, exhibition tours and a public programme.

SUMMARY:The Women Question - Camden Tour Guides and Camden Vox
DESCRIPTION:2018 marks the centenary of some women gaining the right to vote in parliamentary elections for the first time. This walk from Goodge Street to Marchmont Street will introduce you to a few of the pioneering women and men who played their parts in advancing this and other causes and who lent their voices to great debates.\n\n\n\nThis free walk is part of the Camden Vox programme and will be led by Camden tour guides Amanda McKerracher and Jo Wilkinson from the Camden Tour Guides Association (a Knowledge Quarter Partner). \nWalk with them and meet\, among others\, a mother and daughter whose remarkable lives gave us two of the most famous pieces of writing of the 18th and 19th centuries\, advocates and activists both for and against women’s suffrage and a woman born into slavery who overcame appalling suffering to live by her own rules. There will be medical trail blazers\, writers\, philanthropists\, an artist\, the first black woman to sit in the Cabinet of the United Kingdom\, not forgetting the one woman who isn’t there. We will delve into these inspiring lives and will also touch upon the significant ideas and debates that were part of the “Woman Question” that has cast its shadow across the years. \nThe walk will start at Goodge Street underground station and will end in Marchmont Street\, near Russell Square Station\, lasting about 1.5 hours. \nBook places here.

SUMMARY:Michael Price – Tender Symmetry
DESCRIPTION:Emmy Award-winning composer Michael Price gives the world premiere of Tender Symmetry\, written in response to and recorded within six differing but equally awe-inspiring National Trust sites across the length and breadth of England. It will be performed by an ensemble of strings\, voices\, keyboards and tape alongside other much loved works from Price’s repertoire. \nThe new work being premiered is Tender Symmetry\, Michael Price’s second album with Erased Tapes which was released on 31 August\, 2018. The ambitious musical project takes in a series of iconic National Trust locations across England as its inspiration\, turning them into unlikely recording spaces. Michael and a host of musicians and collaborators — including soprano Grace Davidson (featured on Max Richter’s Sleep) and Shards (the choir on Nils Frahm’s All Melody) — travelled across the country in pursuit of places far removed from the traditional recording studio to create seven unique and moving pieces\, straddling the past and the future.

SUMMARY:Motherhood\, Loss and the First World War
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary two-day conference on the mothers who lost sons on the battlefields of the First World War\nWhat does it mean to lose a child in wartime? This powerful experience of bereavement has largely been unexplored in the context of World War One. In order to shed light on a much-overlooked theme\, a major collaborative conference will be held at the Institute of Historical Research and Senate House on 5 and 6 September that will bring historians and community groups together to explore maternal bereavement as a result of the war\, an experience that was understood to be particularly painful and difficult to come to terms with. \nThis conference is organised by Big Ideas\, the London Centre for Public History\, and the Institute of Historical Research. It is part of Motherhood\, Loss and the First World War\, an ongoing community commemoration project led by Big Ideas and funded by the Ministry of Housing\, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and the National Lottery grant from the Big Lottery Fund. Free resources\, project ideas and funding are available to involve community groups across the UK in the project. Contact mothers@big-ideas.org for more information. \n6 September: Motherhood\, Loss and the First World War – Evening Musical Performance \nThe conference culminates in an evocative evening of musical performance and readings exploring the experiences of mothers bereaved during the First World War. This performance acknowledges the universality of bereavement as the defining experience of the conflict\, with a special focus on the impact on mothers – an overlooked aspect of grief from the period.  \nThrough newly-composed pieces by acclaimed violinist and composer Clare Connors\, and powerful readings bringing to life the voices of mothers and their sons and daughters serving in the military\, this performance explores their relationships\, and the experience of a mother losing their child. \nThe performance is free to attend. Click here to reserve your place. \nFor more information on the conference and to book your tickets click here. \nConference Prices:  \nStandard 2 days – £50\nStandard 1 day – £30\nConcession 2 days – £25\nConcession 1 day – £15 \n£5 per day discount for Knowledge Quarter members with code HA2018 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Breakin’ Convention Presents Pierre Rigal’s Scandale
DESCRIPTION:Scandale. Pierre Rigal’s shamanic piece investigating the birth of choreography: is music or movement the mother of dance? \nSet against a simple backdrop\, the soundtrack ranges between extremes\, from ambient chamber music to electronic sound effects. Simultaneously\, words\, cries and scandalous chants exert energy\, as what begins as disorganised chaos slowly falls into structured choreography and a hip hop spectacle. \nScandale stars dancers Steve ‘Lelong’ Kamseu\, Camille ‘Kami’ Regneault\, Julien ‘Bee D’ Saint-Maximin\, members of b-boy crew Yeah Yellow\, as seen on the Breakin’ Convention 2017 Luxembourg and USA tour\, as well as at Sadler’s Wells Sampled 2018. \nBreakin’ Convention: Presents… is an initiative to programme full-length works at Sadler’s Wells\, providing the finest platform for grassroots hip hop theatre makers\, as well as welcoming the vision of contemporary choreographers working with street dance forms. \nThis is hip hop dance theatre at its most curious.
