SUMMARY:Upgrading the Quality of Life in Urban Environments across the Muslim World
DESCRIPTION:The third in a series of ten public events interrogating how architecture\, planning and contemporary creativity enhance and affect both quality of life and sustainability in a range of Muslim contexts\, held in the iconic Aga Khan Centre.\nClick here to register for free. \nThis lecture brings together three strands; the challenges faced in enhancing the quality of urban life for Muslim communities\, which are then presented through fifteen projects that have received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since its inception about forty years ago. The projects are either urban in nature\, or architectural projects with a significant urban impact. Finally we will look at an open online course that has been developed for the Education Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) that addresses the topic of enhancing the quality of life for Muslim communities through these fifteen projects. \nThe coming together of these three subjects: enhancing the quality of urban life\, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture\, and open online courses\, makes for an interesting combination. Thousands of projects have been nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since its inception in 1977\, and over 110 of these have received the Award. These projects have been extensively documented\, and provide a highly valuable database regarding the evolution of the built environment across the lands of Islam (and also of non-Muslim areas with sizable Muslim populations) over the past four decades. The use of this wealth of knowledge and information as an educational tool\, however\, has unfortunately been rather limited. This open online course is among the very few courses that draw on this wealth of knowledge as an educational tool and uses it for the exploration of a very important subject. Moreover\, by developing an open online course for this subject\, access to the course is not limited to the students of a single university\, usually an elite Western university\, but is provided to students everywhere. \nSpeaker \nDr Mohammad al-Asad is an architect and architectural historian. He is the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment in Amman. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, and history of architecture at Harvard University before taking on post-doctoral research positions at Harvard and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. \nHe is a member of the board of directors of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. He also had served as the Coordinator of the International Academic and Curatorial Committee for the Discover Islamic Art project of the Museum With No Frontiers\, and was a member of the Amman Commission\, which served as an advisory body for the Mayor of Amman. \nAl-Asad was a project reviewer for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture between 1989 and 2007\, and has been a member of the Award’s Steering Committee for its 2010\, 2013\, 2016\, and 2019 cycles.

SUMMARY:Concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport
DESCRIPTION:The Wiener Library is delighted to announce details of a special memorial concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport. The concert will take place in the beautiful sanctuary of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue\, London\, on 22 November 2018\, one day after the official anniversary of the Kindertransport debate in Parliament. \nThe evening will begin with a drinks reception at 7pm\, with special guest Dame Esther Rantzen DBE. The concert that follows will consist of an exclusive\, one-off performance by two acclaimed German musicians who have come specially for this occasion: cellist Friederike Fechner\, and composer\, conductor and pianist Mathias Husmann. \nThe performance promises to be very poignant as Friederike Fechner has recently helped to unite the descendants of the Blach family\, originally of Stralsund\, Germany\, through her research. Multiple branches of the Blach family were torn apart by Nazi persecution\, and many members of the family did not survive the Holocaust. Three of the children survived by coming to Britain on the Kindertransport. Another descendant\, AJR trustee Gaby Glassman\, is co-organising this special evening. \nTickets are £30\, but Knowledge Quarter staff members get 20% discount. DESCRIPTION:The St Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre cordially invite you an event to tackle rough sleeping in the borough. \nThe evening will include: \n\nAn exhibition of work from artists who have experienced homelessness and rough sleeping\nThe launch of Realisation of Assets Model\nThe Launch of the Wishing Wall\n\n  \nOn the Realisation of Assets Model\, head of ST Living Centre Jodie Allen described it as\, ‘Community Centres using their buildings on days when they would normally be closed to offer somewhere warm and dry for homeless persons\, at minimal cost to all parties.’ \nSarah Elie MBE of the Somers Town Community Association further added that\, ‘the Realisation of Assets Model is a chance to move away from the current models of delivery that sadly maintain the unhealthy cycles of dependency on traditional funding methods for those less fortunate and those that help the less fortunate. For me this approach is cross-sectoral … For some an asset may be themselves\, for others it could be use of a building they manage; others may have a contractor with surplus uniforms/overalls that could be used as new clean clothes … I could go on\, but in short every problem has a solution and that solution invariably requires a step change in how an asset is used. SUMMARY:‘Where do we fit in?’ Black and Asian British History on the Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Afua Hirsch among panellists at School of Advanced Study’s interactive multimedia event challenging the dearth of Black and Asian British History on UK’s National Curriculum.\nThis event will bring together scholars\, artists and activists to discuss the presence and absence of black and minority ethnic Britons on the UK’s National Curriculum and seek to celebrate the contributions of Britons\, of all backgrounds\, to the history of the United Kingdom. A panel of contributors will discuss ways that BME British experiences have been marginalised from the histories taught in schools\, and how teachers\, scholars\, community leaders\, and politicians can work to ensure that these stories and experiences are taught and understood as British History. How can we make the teaching of history more inclusive and less Eurocentric? Is it time to teach the British movement for civil rights? What are the implications of the ways we teach and understand British history for public history\, memory and policy making? \nRather than following a standard panel format\, this event will also include space for the audience to experience black and Asian British cultural contributions. This is how to Wednesday” \n\nJoin the House of Illustration on Wednesday 5 December for an evening of quick-fire drawing challenges designed to get you thinking creatively. They’re delighted to welcome acclaimed illustrator Jonny Hannah as their latest guest host. \nGet your ticket here. \nJonny Hannah was born and bred in Dunfermline\, Fife.  He studied illustration at Liverpool Art School and the Royal College of Art.  Since graduating in 1996 he has worked as a freelance illustrator.  His many clients include The Daily Telegraph\, The New York Times and The St Kilda Courier.  Any spare minute is spent at The Cakes & Ale Press\, Jonny’s cottage industry\, producing fine printed ephemera\, from his garden shed in Southampton. In 2000 Jonny won a BAFTA for his film The Man With The Beautiful Eyes.

Our theme this time is Employability and will cover work experience\, apprenticeships\, internships and local recruitment. \nCommunity Champions is a unique programme of networking events\, offering charities and community groups across Camden and Islington the chance to make important and lasting connections with Knowledge Quarter partners\, such as the British Museum\, UCL\, Google\, the Francis Crick Institute\, Conway Hall\, The Place and many others. \nWhether you work for a charity helping people get back into work or you are looking for new local partners for an internship programme\, the assets and resources of the Knowledge Quarter are at your disposal\, ensuring you will leave this session with something valuable; a new connection\, the beginnings of a collaboration\, a new way of thinking about Employability. For Knowledge Quarter partners\, too\, the event presents a fantastic opportunity to work more closely with a diverse range of local organisations and learn from their expertise and local knowledge on the subject of Employability. \nThis is a free event\, however places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. \nLocal Community Organisations and Charities\nWe would like to invite local community organisations and charities with a focus on youth or projects that relate to youth to set up marketplace stalls at the event. This will require arriving at 14:00 to set up a your stall. Please note we will be limited to a maximum eight stalls\, and these will be selected through an expression of interest process. Like many rulers of the ancient world\, he liked to boast about his victories in battle and brutally crushed his enemies. However\, this vast and diverse empire was controlled through more than just brute force. Ashurbanipal used his skills as a scholar\, diplomat and strategist to become one of Assyria’s greatest rulers. \nDespite his long and successful reign\, Ashurbanipal’s death is shrouded in mystery. Shortly afterwards\, the Assyrian empire fell and the great city of Nineveh was destroyed in 612 BC\, its ruins lost to history until the 1840s. SUMMARY:Edward Allington: In pursuit of sculpture
DESCRIPTION:‘Sculpture is now a complex\, diverse and exciting activity\, moving and matching the complexity of the world’ — Edward Allington 1997 \n\nSculptures\, photographs\, drawings\, antique ledgers\, motorbike parts and toy dinosaurs are part of a new exhibition at UCL Art Museum\, celebrating the legacy of British artist Edward Allington. \nThis exhibition will serve as the first installment of UCL’s Year of Public Sculpture\, which will explore what sculpture means\, as critical conceptual devices spanning multiple forms\, from traditional materials to sound\, performance and digital media. \nThe exhibition is book-ended by one of Allington’s earliest works as a student of ceramics and his final public work in the UK: a collaboration with artist and fellow Slade Professor\, Jo Volley. Their drawing has been scaled-up to be 7.5m high to wrap around a pop-up structure in the courtyard of UCL. The work features classical columns\, as well as drawing and building instruments\, which are overlaid on a chart depicting the growth of UCL in its first 100 years. DESCRIPTION:*Photograph of Dr. Alfred Wiener in his office in Manchester Square\, London\, c.1950\, Wiener Library Collections\nThe Wiener Library’s spring 2019 exhibition\, Crimes Uncovered: The First Generation of Holocaust Researchers\, traces the stories and legacies of the individuals and institutions who first collected evidence of the crimes of the Holocaust.\nThe exhibition commemorates the life and work of some of these pioneers of Holocaust research\, including\, among others\, Emmanuel Ringelblum and Rachel Auerbach\, whose Oyneg Shabbos organisation gathered and concealed evidence from inside the Warsaw Ghetto; Raphael Lemkin\, who used the information he amassed about the atrocities of the Holocaust to develop the legal concept of genocide; the novelist and writer Vasily Grossman\, who documented the extermination of Soviet Jews; Alfred Wiener\, founder of The Wiener Library\, who collected and disseminated evidence of Nazi activities from the mid-1920s onwards; Eva Reichmann\, who launched one of the earliest projects to collect eye-witness testimonies to the Holocaust. \nUnder the most adverse conditions and often against indifference\, denunciation and violence\, they shaped the foundations of our knowledge of the Holocaust today. \nThe exhibition runs from 27 February 2019 until 17 May 2019 and is free to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff and friends from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private views. London Metropolitan Archives is pleased to present an exclusive curator tour of their new exhibition Child Health in London.\nPaediatrics\, the specialist branch of medicine dealing with children and their diseases\, was a relatively late development in Britain. It was not until the end of the Nineteenth Century\, after significant breakthroughs in medical science had provided the stimulus to tackle disproportionately high child mortality rates\, that a more coordinated approach to child healthcare provision\, culminating in the foundation of the National Health Service in 1948. \nChild Health in London explores some of these developments through a variety of themes\, concentrating on institutions\, services\, practitioners and patients. It looks at the dangers to the health of London’s children and the pioneering ways in which they were tackled. Themes include child mortality\, the establishment of specialist children’s hospitals\, developments in treatment\, school health services\, child psychiatry and child guidance\, and the arrival of the NHS; as well as preventative public health measures focusing on non-medical factors such as diet\, housing conditions\, hygiene\, lifestyle and education. \nCase studies of patients and practitioners explore the varying ways in which society viewed children\, child patients and the various medical conditions they suffered; and how contemporary attitudes affected the way patients were classified\, diagnosed and treated. \n
