SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Charles Dickens: Man of Science
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we have a last look around Charles Dickens: Man of Science before the exhibition closes… \nIn 1839\, the writer and physiologist George Henry Lewes visited Charles Dickens at Doughty Street and examined his bookshelves. He left accusing Dickens of being ‘completely outside philosophy\, science\, and the higher literature’. For over 150 years\, it was thought that Charles Dickens was either not interested in science\, or was downright hostile to it. But Dickens’s science was not the science of books or learned institutions; for Dickens\, science mattered when it transformed lives by curing disease or cleaning streets\, or opening up new vistas of wonder in a humdrum world. \nCharles Dickens: Man of Science aims to reveal Dickens not only as a scientific enthusiast\, but as the key communicator of science in the Victorian age. Displaying his writings alongside artefacts\, instruments\, and texts of the developing sciences\, we share the story of Dickens’s friendships and scientific passions. Journeying through some of Dickens’s favourite sciences – geology\, thermodynamics\, chemistry\, and medicine – we reveal that what made him a great writer was precisely what made him a man of science. \nReserve your space here.

SUMMARY:Remembering the Kindertransport: 80 Years On
DESCRIPTION:“What is my key message to future generations? Tolerance.”\n– Elsa Shamash\, Kindertransport refugee \nTo mark the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport\, discover the stories of six of the Kinder (child refugees) in their own words. \nIn 1938-39 the British government allowed 10\,000 Jewish and other ‘non-Aryan’ children from occupied Europe to come to Britain. This remarkable rescue operation became known as the Kindertransport. Now in their 80s and 90s\, the Kinder have given their testimony through the medium of film. You can also see personal objects and artefacts that they brought with them from their homelands. \nAs children they escaped violence and persecution\, but went through painful separations\, and their integration into British society was not always straightforward. This exhibition tells the story of rescue as well as stories of rupture\, loss and regret. \nThe Jewish Museum also has an extensive programme of talks\, lates and family events relating to this exhibition which can be found here.

SUMMARY:A woman and a doctor? Activism\, medicine and the fight for equality
DESCRIPTION:Should gender matter in the medical profession? Join the Royal College of Physicians museum for a special evening focused on the struggle for female medical equality in the 20th century. \n\n\nFeatures illuminating short talks\, an ‘in conversation’ with Dr Lesley Hall and Dr Leslie Brock\, and curator-led tour of the acclaimed exhibition ‘This vexed question: 500 years of women in medicine’.\nAt the beginning of the 20th century a member of staff at the London School of Medicine for Women said: ‘Medicine is a jealous mistress and those who would win her favours must not worship at any other shrine.’ \nWhile women had been included as doctors on Britain’s new medical register since the 1860s\, the larger question of what it meant to be a woman and a doctor took on new urgency in the early 1900s. \nCould a woman be a doctor and a suffragette?\nShould women doctors model themselves on male clinicians or be something completely different?\nDid gender matter at all? \nThis ‘in conversation’ evening with Dr Lesley Hall and Dr Claire Brock will reflect on activism\, gender and the tumultuous turn of the 20th century for women physicians and surgeons. Through short lectures and lively discussion\, the event will delve into challenging questions around women’s careers\, family lives and roles in the political movements of this period. \n\nProgramme\n6.00pm: Drinks reception\n6.15pm: Exhibition tour of ‘This vexed question’ (pre-book only\, places are limited)\n7.00pm: Short talks:\nBattles not yet won: women doctors between the Wars Dr Lesley Hall\nVexing Questions for Medical Women\, 1860-1918 Dr Claire Brock\n7.40pm: Lesley Hall and Claire Brock in conversation with Royal College of Physicians museum curator\, Dr Kristin Hussey\n8.15pm (approx.): Exhibition viewing and pay bar\n9.00pm: Close \n\n\n\n\nBook your ticket here.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private Tour: Raids\, Rations and Rifles at the Islington Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to another private tours\, on this occasion hosted by the Islington Museum.\nKQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity of an exclusive curator tour of Raids\, Rations and Rifles – Islington during the First World War. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? Sign up to our updates here. \nAbout Raids\, Rations and Rifles  \nIn the Metropolitan Boroughs of Islington and Finsbury (now a part of Islington)\, from 1914 until 1918\, many young men lost their lives on the battlefields of the First World War. Life on the home front was also a challenging and sometimes frightening experience. \nAlmost one million people lost their lives from Britain and its dominions during the war. Nearly 10\,000 of whom were linked in some way to Islington. \nSoldiers from local battalions\, including those from the Honourable Artillery Company\, the Finsbury Rifles and ‘Islington’s Own’ fought on the Western Front\, at Gallipoli and in Palestine. Five Islington-born soldiers were each awarded the Victoria Cross during the conflict. Islington sailors were to lose their lives at the Battle of Jutland and over 150 servicemen from Islington and Finsbury fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Women from Islington also served abroad and some were never to return home. \nResidents from Islington and Finsbury experienced hostilities and hardships without even leaving the borough during the war. Islington was to feature in the first and last enemy air raids on London. An entire German spy ring was uncovered and an alien internment camp holding 750 internees was established in the north of the borough. Local companies\, women and children did more than their bit to help the war effort. And\, libraries were turned in hospitals\, food offices and recruiting centres. \n‘Raids\, Rations and Rifles: Islington during the First World War’ focuses on these themes\, remembering those who served on the front line\, as well as exploring everyday life in the borough as the conflict was brought unavoidably to people’s homes and lives. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Upgrading the Quality of Life in Urban Environments across the Muslim World
DESCRIPTION:The third in a series of ten public events interrogating how architecture\, planning and contemporary creativity enhance and affect both quality of life and sustainability in a range of Muslim contexts\, held in the iconic Aga Khan Centre.\nClick here to register for free. \nThis lecture brings together three strands; the challenges faced in enhancing the quality of urban life for Muslim communities\, which are then presented through fifteen projects that have received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since its inception about forty years ago. The projects are either urban in nature\, or architectural projects with a significant urban impact. Finally we will look at an open online course that has been developed for the Education Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) that addresses the topic of enhancing the quality of life for Muslim communities through these fifteen projects. \nThe coming together of these three subjects: enhancing the quality of urban life\, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture\, and open online courses\, makes for an interesting combination. Thousands of projects have been nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since its inception in 1977\, and over 110 of these have received the Award. These projects have been extensively documented\, and provide a highly valuable database regarding the evolution of the built environment across the lands of Islam (and also of non-Muslim areas with sizable Muslim populations) over the past four decades. The use of this wealth of knowledge and information as an educational tool\, however\, has unfortunately been rather limited. This open online course is among the very few courses that draw on this wealth of knowledge as an educational tool and uses it for the exploration of a very important subject. Moreover\, by developing an open online course for this subject\, access to the course is not limited to the students of a single university\, usually an elite Western university\, but is provided to students everywhere. \nSpeaker \nDr Mohammad al-Asad is an architect and architectural historian. He is the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment in Amman. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, and history of architecture at Harvard University before taking on post-doctoral research positions at Harvard and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. \nHe is a member of the board of directors of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. He also had served as the Coordinator of the International Academic and Curatorial Committee for the Discover Islamic Art project of the Museum With No Frontiers\, and was a member of the Amman Commission\, which served as an advisory body for the Mayor of Amman. \nAl-Asad was a project reviewer for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture between 1989 and 2007\, and has been a member of the Award’s Steering Committee for its 2010\, 2013\, 2016\, and 2019 cycles.

SUMMARY:Concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport
DESCRIPTION:The Wiener Library is delighted to announce details of a special memorial concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport. The concert will take place in the beautiful sanctuary of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue\, London\, on 22 November 2018\, one day after the official anniversary of the Kindertransport debate in Parliament. \nThe evening will begin with a drinks reception at 7pm\, with special guest Dame Esther Rantzen DBE. The concert that follows will consist of an exclusive\, one-off performance by two acclaimed German musicians who have come specially for this occasion: cellist Friederike Fechner\, and composer\, conductor and pianist Mathias Husmann. \nThe performance promises to be very poignant as Friederike Fechner has recently helped to unite the descendants of the Blach family\, originally of Stralsund\, Germany\, through her research. Multiple branches of the Blach family were torn apart by Nazi persecution\, and many members of the family did not survive the Holocaust. Three of the children survived by coming to Britain on the Kindertransport. Another descendant\, AJR trustee Gaby Glassman\, is co-organising this special evening. \nTickets are £30\, but Knowledge Quarter staff members get 20% discount. Contact us\, direct message us on twitter @KQ_London or get in touch with the Wiener Library to receive a code for the eventbrite page. \nAll proceeds from ticket sales\, with the exception of a small booking fee\, will go directly towards The Wiener Library’s work to collect\, preserve and share evidence of the Holocaust. The Library depends on donations for its work and we would welcome any additional support. To give a gift to the Library over and above the ticket price please contact us at development@wienerlibrary.co.uk or call 0207 636 7247. \nPlease note\, The Wiener Library is organising a special anniversary exhibition on Kristallnacht this year and has made a call for donations of material relating to the events of 9-10 November 1938. \nThis event has been organised with the kind support of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue\, London. \nThe programme will include compositions by Maurice Ravel\, Felix Mendelssohn\, Max Bruch and Ernest Bloch alongside select readings. The full programme will be announced closer to the date of the event. \n

SUMMARY:We Need to Talk About Rough Sleeping
DESCRIPTION:The St Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre cordially invite you an event to tackle rough sleeping in the borough. \nThe evening will include: \n\nAn exhibition of work from artists who have experienced homelessness and rough sleeping\nThe launch of Realisation of Assets Model\nThe Launch of the Wishing Wall\n\n  \nOn the Realisation of Assets Model\, head of ST Living Centre Jodie Allen described it as\, ‘Community Centres using their buildings on days when they would normally be closed to offer somewhere warm and dry for homeless persons\, at minimal cost to all parties.’ \nSarah Elie MBE of the Somers Town Community Association further added that\, ‘the Realisation of Assets Model is a chance to move away from the current models of delivery that sadly maintain the unhealthy cycles of dependency on traditional funding methods for those less fortunate and those that help the less fortunate. For me this approach is cross-sectoral … For some an asset may be themselves\, for others it could be use of a building they manage; others may have a contractor with surplus uniforms/overalls that could be used as new clean clothes … I could go on\, but in short every problem has a solution and that solution invariably requires a step change in how an asset is used. So let’s take that first step.’ \nTo enquire about attending\, please email Jodie Allen. \n

SUMMARY:‘Where do we fit in?’ Black and Asian British History on the Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Afua Hirsch among panellists at School of Advanced Study’s interactive multimedia event challenging the dearth of Black and Asian British History on UK’s National Curriculum.\nThis event will bring together scholars\, artists and activists to discuss the presence and absence of black and minority ethnic Britons on the UK’s National Curriculum and seek to celebrate the contributions of Britons\, of all backgrounds\, to the history of the United Kingdom. A panel of contributors will discuss ways that BME British experiences have been marginalised from the histories taught in schools\, and how teachers\, scholars\, community leaders\, and politicians can work to ensure that these stories and experiences are taught and understood as British History. How can we make the teaching of history more inclusive and less Eurocentric? Is it time to teach the British movement for civil rights? What are the implications of the ways we teach and understand British history for public history\, memory and policy making? \nRather than following a standard panel format\, this event will also include space for the audience to experience black and Asian British cultural contributions. The evening will include special contributions by poets and performers\, including Momtaza Mehri\, the Young People’s Laureate for London\, and Hannah Lowe. \nConfirmed panellists include Afua Hirsch\, broadcaster and author of Brit(ish):  On Race\, Identity and Belonging\, Dr Jonathan Saha (Leeds)\, co-author of the Royal Historical Society’s Race\, Ethnicity & Equality Report\, Professor Claire Alexander (Manchester)\, project leader of Migration Story\, Suhaiyma Manzoor-Khan\, poet and writer\, and Professor Hakim Adi (Chichester\, leader of History Matters group.)

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: I am Ashurbanipal at the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:Warrior. Scholar. Empire builder. King slayer. Lion hunter. Librarian. Take a closer look at the great Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. \nKing Ashurbanipal of Assyria (r. 669–c. 631 BC) was the most powerful man on earth. He described himself in inscriptions as ‘king of the world’\, and his reign from the city of Nineveh (now in northern Iraq) marked the high point of the Assyrian empire\, which stretched from the shores of the eastern Mediterranean to the mountains of western Iran. \n___________________________________________________________________________________ \nAshurbanipal proved himself worthy of protecting his people through displays of strength\, such as hunting lions. Like many rulers of the ancient world\, he liked to boast about his victories in battle and brutally crushed his enemies. However\, this vast and diverse empire was controlled through more than just brute force. Ashurbanipal used his skills as a scholar\, diplomat and strategist to become one of Assyria’s greatest rulers. \nDespite his long and successful reign\, Ashurbanipal’s death is shrouded in mystery. Shortly afterwards\, the Assyrian empire fell and the great city of Nineveh was destroyed in 612 BC\, its ruins lost to history until the 1840s. Their rediscovery has allowed us to piece together a portrait of the powerful and complex ruler that was Ashurbanipal. \nThis major exhibition tells the story of Ashurbanipal through the British Museum’s unparalleled collection of Assyrian treasures and rare loans. Step into Ashurbanipal’s world through displays that evoke the splendour of his palace\, with its spectacular sculptures\, sumptuous furnishings and exotic gardens. Marvel at the workings of Ashurbanipal’s great library\, the first in the world to be created with the ambition of housing all knowledge under one roof. Come face to face with one of history’s greatest forgotten kings. \nBook your ticket here.
