SUMMARY:On British Soil: Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands (Exhibition runs from 19 October 2017 – 9 February 2018)
DESCRIPTION:“Everything that people thought they knew about the German occupation of the Channel Islands is – at best – partial and – at worst – inaccurate\,” explains co-curator Dr. Gilly Carr on the motivation for a new exhibition at The Wiener Library. \nDuring the German occupation of the Channel Islands 1940-1945\, many thousands of people were persecuted\, including slave labourers\, political prisoners and Jews. Their story has been largely omitted from a British narrative of ‘standing alone’ against Nazism and celebrations of British victory over Germany. \nOn British Soil – Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands tells the stories of these persecuted\, drawing upon The Wiener Library’s rich archival collections\, files recently released by The National Archives\, and never seen before items from the personal collections of victims of Nazi persecution. \nFrom the experiences of a young Jewish woman living quietly on a farm in Jersey and later deported to Auschwitz\, to those of a Spanish forced labourer in Alderney\, and the story of a man from Guernsey whose death in a Nazi prison remained unknown to his family for over 70 years\, this exhibition highlights the lives of the persecuted and the post-war struggle to obtain recognition for their suffering. \nPlease visit The Wiener Library website for more information\, you can read the full press release here. \nOpening hours: Monday-Friday 10am-5pm\, Tuesdays: 10 am – 7:30pm\nFree entry \nProduced in collaboration with Dr. Gilly Carr of Cambridge University\, and with the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. \nImage credit: \n1) Hedwig Bercu © Jersey Archives\n2) © John Dalmau\, Slave Worker in the Channel Islands (1956)\, Wiener Library Collections

SUMMARY:“Caste discrimination in the UK” Documentary screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:The caste system has been a source of much debate in South Asia. But what happens when British Indians say caste discrimination has followed them overseas? \nCaste Aside is a documentary about the British government’s controversial decision to introduce legislation against caste discrimination in the UK. \nHighlighting both sides of this heated debate\, the documentary speaks to Dalit rights activists\, Hindu community leaders\, academics and lawyers\, as well as those who say they have been discriminated against on the basis of their caste – here in Britain. \nWhile some members of the British Indian community believe that making caste an aspect of the Equality Act 2010 would shine a negative light on the Hindu community and create social tension\, others believe that caste legislation is a necessary protection for victims. \nThe UK government has been torn between these two groups for years\, finally resulting in a public consultation to seek the views of the general public on the issue. With the consultation now complete\, both sides await a response. \nWith a big decision on the government’s hands\, Caste Aside highlights the bigger picture behind the public consultation and the story behind the UK’s caste problem. Who will the government ultimately believe? \nClick here for more information and to register to attend this screening.

SUMMARY:“Dangers and Delusions”? Perspectives on the women’s suffrage movement.
DESCRIPTION:Displaying items from UCL Special Collections\, this exhibition examines the actions and reactions attending the women’s suffrage movement from the 1860s up to the Representation of the People Act 1918. Satirical commentaries including Laurence Housman’s Anti-Suffrage Alphabet are set alongside campaign literature and petitions for and against legislative change. \nThe movement calling for women’s right to vote in the United Kingdom was drawn out over several decades and generated intense differences of opinion\, not only between those for and against electoral equality\, but also within pro- and anti-suffrage campaigns. This exhibition draws on items held in UCL Special Collections – satirical commentaries\, campaign literature\, personal notes and petitions – to examine the actions and reactions surrounding the case for universal suffrage\, from the 1860s up to the fi rst legislative step towards equality for women: the Representation of the People Act\, 1918.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: The Lost Words at the Foundling Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff and friends from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the Foundling Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at ‘The Lost Words‘ exploring the relationship between language and the living world through an exhibition of poetry and illustration. \nAbout The Lost Words \nThe Lost Words is a unique collaborative project between the award-winning author Robert Macfarlane\, and acclaimed artist and author Jackie Morris\, in response to their belief that nature is in retreat from our children’s stories and imaginations. The exhibition presents a new series of poems and accompanying illustrations that conjure the beauty of nature\, for visitors young and old. \nIn 2002 the results of a Cambridge University survey\, published in Science\, found that British schoolchildren were able to identify Pokémon far more accurately than species of common UK wildlife. In a 2008 National Trust survey\, only a third of primary age children could identify a magpie\, though nine out of ten could name a Dalek. This exhibition summons this vanishing wildness back into existence in a joyful celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke. Robert Macfarlane has created twenty acrostic poems or ‘spells’ focused on common nature words that are fading from use as the species themselves decline\, while Jackie Morris\, inspired by her lifelong passion for Britain’s landscapes and wildlife\, has painted beautiful\, iridescent watercolours which take viewers on a journey in which the familiar is magical once more. \nThe Lost Words explores the widening gulf between childhood and the natural world in the 21st century\, but also speaks to an important aspect of the Foundling Hospital’s history and ethos. Items from the Hospital archive that relate to the importance placed on fresh air and the children’s education\, such as reading games and aids\, some with lost or archaic vocabulary\, are displayed alongside the artwork\, demonstrating the institution’s forward-thinking health and education practices. \nClick here to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Charles Holden Lecture with Dr Julia Walworth- 'The Sterling Library: 20th century Book Collecting and 21st century Book History'
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Senate House Library present their annual Holden Lecture with speaker Dr Julia Walworth\, Fellow Librarian of Merton College\, University of Oxford. \nThe Sterling Library started out as the private collection of Sir Louis Sterling (1879-1958)\, a wealthy businessman. When the collection arrived at the Senate House Library in 1956 it comprised more than 4000 rare printed books and manuscripts of English literary works from the middle ages to the twentieth century\, and it has now grown to more than 7000 volumes. \nIn this year’s Charles Holden Lecture\, Dr Julia Walworth will introduce some of these treasures and explore how the role and function of the Sterling Library has evolved — from a collection of ‘trophy books’ to an invaluable resource for the University’s many activities in the burgeoning field of the History of the Book. \nTo find out more and register for the lecture\, please click here. \nTo find out more and join the Friends of Senate House Library\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Over My Shoulder
DESCRIPTION:This project derives from from a curious connection between two very different and fascinating singers. Elisabeth Schumann\, international classical diva\, and Jessie Matthews\, darling of the 1930s stage and screen\, are buried in the same West London churchyard. \nEach of these women was hugely famous in her day\, reaching the very peak of the performing profession\, and yet their names are hardly recognised now by younger generations of music-lovers. Over My Shoulder sets out to remedy this by weaving together the lives of these two singers as an introduction to their music and artistry\, built around the unexpected intersection of their stories here in England. \nBoth Elisabeth and Jessie have rich personal stories as well as their musical careers. They experienced the ups and downs\, joys and challenges that the performing life unavoidably entails: there were romantic scandals\, tragedies\, falls from grace and triumphant come-backs. \nThe success of my first narrated recital Haydn’s London Ladies\, demonstrated how well-suited this style of speaking and singing is to combining a wide variety of musical items and historical anecdotes. Over My Shoulder includes music by Schubert to Rodgers & Hart\, taking us from Covent Garden to Hollywood and back via Richard Strauss\, Noël Coward and Otto Klemperer. \nThe first performance of Over My Shoulder was given at St Martin’s Church\, Ruislip on September 16th\, 2017\, in the presence of Elisabeth Schumann’s three grandchildren via her marriage to Walter Puritz. \nThe next performance will be at St Paul’s Church\, Wilton Place\, Knightsbridge on Thursday 15th February\, 2018 at 7.30pm. \nBook tickets or click here for more information.

SUMMARY:Bach\, the Universe & Everything – Seeing Life in a New Light
DESCRIPTION:Bach is often praised by scientists for the intricate structures and symmetries in his music. He wrote more than 200 cantatas\, a collection of vocal works which explore questions of faith\, time and eternity. Taking inspiration from Douglas Adams’ quote that ‘Bach tells you what it’s like to be the universe’\, this unusual series from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The Institute of Physics at Kings Place swaps metaphysics for physics to celebrate extraordinary universe and the music of Bach with some of Britain’s brightest scientists. \nThe next event (Sunday 18th February) features one of Bach’s most spine-tingling cantatas. Mixing joyful arias with funeral sounds\, it’s a rollercoaster journey through life and death. The OAE are joined by Professor Kishan Dholakia. A world expert in the physics of light\, he’s fascinated by how photonic imaging can unravel the mysteries of the brain. \nClick here for more information and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Materials Protecting the Environment Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The second event in the Materials Protecting Society (MPS) Seminar Series. Organised by the IOM3 Sustainable Development Group. \nThere is a real challenge for materials scientists and engineers to understand how their expertise and professional practises can affect environmental performance and contribute towards more sustainable outcomes. In many cases the apparent solutions to solving one environmental impact can increased impacts in another part of the product life cycle or perhaps in another impact category. So how can we make informed decisions in materials selection and new material developments to ensure that progress and solutions are heading in the right direction. \nThis event will set out the challenge and inform the debate on the following critical environmental topics facing society: \n\nClimate change: transport\, building and construction\nOcean health: challenge of plastics and marine biodiversity\nCircular economy: business innovation\, resource efficiency and recycling\n\nThe sessions will include Q&A and will encourage discussion and contributions from the delegates. We recognised that measures for improvement will need further debate and we welcome this to help support strategies on the best way forward. \nFull programme and registration details can be found here.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private Tour: Royal College of Physicians - Ceaseless Motion
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff and friends from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private tours and views. It will be on this occasion hosted at The Royal College of Physicians. You are invited to an exclusive morning curator tour of the College’s new exhibit Ceaseless motion: William Harvey’s experiments in circulation. \nAbout the Exhibition \nJoin The Royal College of Physicians for a private view of their new exhibition. Opening January 2018\, coinciding with the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP’s) 500th anniversary Ceaseless motion: William Harvey’s experiments in circulation and come explore the life\, work and legacy of revolutionary anatomist William Harvey – the physician who revealed the secrets of circulation. \nWilliam Harvey (1578–1657) was an anatomist and physician with an insatiable curiosity about the inner workings of all living creatures. Harvey lived through an extraordinary age of scientific revolution\, to which he would contribute with his own discovery on the heart and blood circulation. \nIn 1628\, after 10 years of painstaking solitary research\, Harvey at last published his discovery in a book\, known as De motu cordis. His idea\, that blood is pumped around the body by the heart in a state of ceaseless motion\, proved highly controversial to some\, challenging 1\,500 years of established scientific and medical belief. \nHarvey encouraged his fellow physicians ‘to search and study out the secrets of nature by way of experiment’. His legacy of curiosity\, research and discovery has had a lasting impact on the practice and science of medicine. This exhibition places William Harvey at the heart of the RCP as it celebrates its 500th anniversary. \nThe tour will be led by Public Programmes Officer Natalie Craven \, Natalie has worked as Public Programmes Officer at the Royal College of Physicians since 2016 aiding the creation of a number of exhibits. \nClick here to register for this event.

SUMMARY:500 years of medicine. The future: population and personalised healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Join the Royal College of Physicians for a special free lecture\, part of the season marking its 500th anniversary\, reflecting on the history and future of medicine\, society and health. \nIn this event\, Sir Muir Gray looks at the future of medicine in the context of an ageing population\, and examines the shift from a focus on life expectancy to healthy life expectancy. \nEach year billions of pounds are being spent on regenerative and curative medicine\, while the research-led hunt for an elixir of life continues. Yet a crucial question remains unanswered: \nDo people really want to live to be 120?   \nSir Muir will argue that all of us\, both healthcare providers and individuals\, have to be focussed on living better longer rather than simply living longer.  The evidence exists that we can do this\, but that we first have to understand what is happening inside us. \nRegister for this event via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Science and Innovation Audit Final KQ-Wide Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter has been selected as one of the third wave of Science and Innovation Audits. These are sponsored by government (BEIS) and their purpose is to investigate innovation capabilities and potentials in different parts of the UK. \nOur focus is on three main Themes (Life Sciences; Cultural\, Scientific and Heritage Collections; and Data Science) in a core geography that is defined as Camden and Islington. In this context\, we are seeking to evidence our major assets and opportunities. Some of these are obvious and well-known (e.g. Francis Crick Institute\, Alan Turing Institute\, British Library\, etc.) – but we think there are many firms and other (less well-known) organisations that are active in these fields\, and crucially\, that the links between organisations/firms hold particular potential in terms of future innovation. This part of central London is (rightly) being described as an innovation district – but through the SIA\, we need to evidence its expertise\, capacity and potential. \nWe would like to invite you to our second and final KQ-wide workshop which is being held on the 5 April at the British Library. We will present the first results of our SIA and discuss with partners potential recommendations and next steps. \nThe workshop will be interactive and (we hope) enjoyable. We hope very much that you will be able to come. \nClick here to book your place via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: The People in the Gallery and Made in North Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at House of Illustration\, where you will get to view two new exhibitions. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at The People in the Gallery\, the final exhibition by their Illustrator in Residence Christy Burdock and Made in North Korea: Everyday Graphics from the DPRK; the House of Illustration’s blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Christy Burdock: The People in the Gallery \nChristy Burdock’s work tells the complex story of the everyday; she immerses herself in microsocieties then layers her studies with metaphor and imagination. This exhibition will feature House of Illustration visitors\, staff and artists in large-scale observations of her six months spent as Illustrator in Residence. \n“Burdock’s drawings immediately struck me with their sense of narrative and atmospheric rendition. I was engaged by the groups of figures which are mysterious but believable like people in dreams. Delicate and unusual colour is used to good effect in a personal way.” Chloe Cheese \nAbout Made in North Korea: Everyday Graphics from the DPRK \n“A rare glimpse into an isolated graphic culture” Financial Times\n“Offers a new perspective by looking at everyday life there” Design Week \nHundreds of original objects including food packaging\, ticket stubs and stamps\, together with hand-painted propaganda posters and comics\, give an unprecedented insight into everyday life in the DPRK. The exhibition displays the collection of Nicholas Bonner\, the foremost expert on North Korean graphic culture\, tourism and film\, who has led tours to the country for 25 years. \n“This collection represents common objects given beautiful status by the hand-drawn graphics from North Korea’s most creative designers. Some of the work is elaborate but the basic designs too should not be overlooked – minimalistic simplicity creating beautifully rhythmic artwork.” Nicholas Bonner \nRegister via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity?
DESCRIPTION:AccessHE is pleased to open registration for the third event in the London Student Outcomes series – Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity?  \nSupported by the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) the event will be chaired by Dr Darryll Bravenboer\, Director of Apprenticeships and Skills at Middlesex University. \nAre Degree Apprenticeships the key to “smashing the Level 3 glass ceiling” of apprenticeships? Can they offer debt-free progression to higher level jobs for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and deliver a real widening of participation in higher education? Or should we be concerned about who might be missing from new uses of levy funds? This event will explore these questions and more by sharing emerging best practice in this area\, bringing together employers\, universities and other organisations to explore some of the key challenges and opportunities for promoting social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships in London. \nSpeakers \nWe look forward to welcoming Sarah-Louise Collins and Stella McKnight from the University of Winchester to present an update on their HEFCE Degree Apprenticeship Development Fundproject looking at enhancing social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships. Other speakers will be confirmed soon. \nAccessHE will present research on Degree Apprenticeship provision and uptake in London\, and there will also be an opportunity for discussions about the challenges facing the capital in trying to connect social mobility and Degree Apprenticeships together. \nWho should attend? \nWe anticipate attendees will include those in business development\, employer engagement\, student recruitment and widening participation within higher education institutions\, as well as employers and other organisations with an interest in this area. We hope the event will inform new collaborative work in 2018-19 to address Degree Apprenticeship opportunities in London. \nAttendance is FREE for AccessHE members and £25 for non-members. \nThis is the third event in the AccessHE London Student Outcomes series\, exploring four key emerging themes in widening participation across the full student lifecycle. The final event in the series will look at post-HE progression for learners from under-represented groups. Please visit the link above for more information and to register your interest in attending. \nIf you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact Sam Turner\, AccessHE London Programmes Coordinator\, at sam.turner@londonhigher.ac.uk. \nClick here to book for this event.

SUMMARY:500 years of medicine. The future: The end of AIDS is up to us
DESCRIPTION:Join the Royal College of Physicians for a special free lecture\, part of the season marking its 500th anniversary\, reflecting on the history and future of medicine\, society and health.\nIn this event\, Dr Nneka Nwokolo focuses on the advances made in the diagnosis\, prevention and treatment of HIV over recent years\, and how these major changes have not yet entered the public’s consciousness. \nToday\, people who receive effective treatment are not infectious and unable to pass the virus on to others\, including sexual partners and unborn babies. Meanwhile\, the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)\, medication taken by people at risk of catching HIV\, has had ground-breaking effects on transmission in many parts of the world. \nWhilst stigma and availability of services remain major issues\, the means are now in place to halt the spread of the virus and ensure that people with HIV have life expectancies comparable to the general population. \nDr Nneka Nwokolo is a consultant physician at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where she trained in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine. Her research interests include the prevention of HIV transmission\, and she has been involved in initiatives that have resulted in a significant reduction in HIV diagnoses in men who have sex with men in London. She is also interested in the sexual and reproductive health of women\, and particularly HIV positive women. She is a passionate advocate for women’s access to HIV prevention strategies including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). \nDr Nwokolo will argue that the end of AIDS could be within reach\, but success lies in our hands. \nProgramme \n6pm – Arrival refreshments (tea and coffee)\n6.30pm – Lecture starts\n7.30pm – Lecture finishes \nSpaces at this event and the others in the 500th series are strictly limited and we anticipate them booking out well in advance. \nRegister via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Public Commemoration and Women’s History
DESCRIPTION:How are women remembered\, commemorated and celebrated in public? How is this different from historical commemorations of men? What forms do these commemorations take? Why do public commemorations of women provoke such debate\, and what are the legacies of these public memorials? \nOur cities\, towns and streets are rich with memorials and monuments dedicated to the achievements and lives of men\, but women are significantly unrepresented in our public acts of commemoration. At this special panel discussion\, feminist activists and scholars will examine this significant ‘representation gap’ and debates around the place of women in public history and memory. \nWith \nCaroline Criado Perez\, activist and campaigner (Campaigns include: ‘Keep a Woman on English Banknotes’ and ‘Put a Statue of Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square’) \nDr Rebekah Higgitt\, university lecturer and member of the English Heritage Blue Plaques Panel \nSarah Jackson\, founder of the East End Women’s Museum \nProfessor Rebecca Surender\, Oxford University\, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Diversity and head of Oxford’s ‘Diversifying Portraiture’ campaign

The company has also worked on a string of children’s TV classics such as Bob the Builder\, Postman Pat and Rasta Mouse. \nThe event will include the premiere of the digitally remastered version of the Oscar nominated animation The Sandman. As Burton once said of them: ‘They do such beautiful work\, very sensitive and textural; you really do believe the characters are alive.’ It promises to be a must-see for fans of animation.\nMeanwhile highlights to look out for from the opening two nights include: \n\nMade In London: Chris Keenan. Directed by William Scothern\, the documentary is the story of how this brilliant potter went from being a jobbing actor into one of the most successful ceramists in the country via an apprenticeship with Edmund de Waal.\nAlan Kitching: A life in letterpress. A short film by Alice Masters that goes behind the scenes to explain the history and thinking of this legendary figure of British craft.\nOur Common Humanity. An insight into the work of the brilliant Costa Rican glass artist Juli Bolaños-Durman directed by Diego Almazan de Pablo and the maker herself.\nEdmond. The BAFTA-winning stop motion animation by Nina Gantz focusses on the life of a young man as he contemplates suicide. Surreal\, macabre and poignant in equal measure.\nMarble Machine. Created by Swedish folktronica band\, Wintergatan\, the music video features an instrument that might have been created by Heath Robinson and uses over 2000 marbles.\nKeith Harrison\, Joyride. A documentary directed by Stephen Gammond illustrates the making of the artist’s ambitious Jerwood Open Forest commission. His idea is to launch a ceramic replica of the last Rover 75 to leave Birmingham’s Longbridge car plant Evel Knievel-style off a timber ramp in Cannonck Chase Forest. But will it all go to plan?\n\nFor the first time the festival has a headline sponsor\, Killik & Co.\,an independently owned investment house.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Rodin and the art of ancient Greece
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Quarter is delighted to invite staff from Knowledge Quarter organisations to the next in our series of private breakfast views. It will be on this occasion hosted at the British Museum. KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece \n\n\nIn 1881 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin visited London for the first time. On a trip to the British Museum\, he saw the Parthenon sculptures and was instantly captivated by the beauty of these ancient Greek masterpieces. \nLike many archaeological ruins\, the Parthenon sculptures had been broken and weathered over centuries\, but Rodin took inspiration from the powerful expression that they conveyed through the body alone. He even removed the heads and limbs from his own figures to make them closer to the broken relics of the past. By doing so\, he created a new genre of contemporary art – the headless\, limbless torso. \nA hundred years after his death\, see a selection of Rodin’s works – including his iconic sculptures The Thinker and The Kiss – in a new light. This major exhibition will feature original plaster\, bronze and marble examples of many of Rodin’s sculptures on loan from the Musée Rodin in Paris. For the first time\, they will be shown alongside some of the Parthenon sculptures that the artist so admired\, as well as selected objects from his own collection of antiquities. \nExperience the magnificent sculpture of a modern master\, and explore how the ancient world shaped his artistic vision
