SUMMARY:The Second Pandemic: Misinformation and Perception
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are available through via Eventbrite here. \nWhat happens to our perception of truth during a pandemic? What happens in our brains that makes us more susceptible to believing and spreading false information in times of crisis? Mixing storytelling and science\, Christopher Bailey\, Arts and Health Lead at the World Health Organization\, will draw on real life examples\, taken from pandemics and wars\, to explore how rumours and false narratives proliferate in a crisis. In telling these stories\, Bailey\, an actor and playwright from New York\, strips away the layers of our psychology to reveal what makes us fearful\, impressionable and fundamentally human. \nMisinformation and fake news is also linked to the rise of “fake medicines” claiming to cure COVID-19. Christopher Bailey’s performance will be followed by a panel discussion including Founder of UCL Fight the Fakes\, Oksana Pyzik\, and Professor Robert Horne of UCL School of Pharmacy to further explore this growing global health threat and its’ psychological underpinnings. The panel will be moderated by Bhavit Mehta of the Knowledge Quarter and will feature a guest appearance from the WHO’s Special Envoy for COVID-19 David Nabarro. \n“When facing the unknown we often tell a story to help make sense of what we are experiencing\, even\, and sometime especially\, if few facts are available.” ~ Christopher Bailey \nThe WHO’s Arts and Health program explores the evidence base for the health benefits of the arts\, and the practical implementation of arts-based approaches to improve health at the local level. \nJoin this moving\, entertaining and informative event brought to you by the Knowledge Quarter\, in partnership with UCL School of Pharmacy and the World Health Organization. \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. To ensure you are able to join the event\, please ‘arrive’ (via the link sent through Eventbrite ) around 5 minutes before the start. This will ensure you are able to be let into the Zoom room before we reach full capacity. \nOnce you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive a Zoom link by email 48 hrs before\, 2 hrs before and 10 minutes before the event\, please check your JUNK folder for these emails as they are sent directly through Eventbrite’s system. \nYou do not need to download Zoom software in order to participate – there is a web browser version which works perfectly well. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with the KQ events team: Bhav or Jemima. \n  \nAbout UCL Pharmacy: \nThe UCL School of Pharmacy is one of the most highly rated pharmacy schools in the UK. As the oldest School\, founded by the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 1842\, it has over 175 years of experience and tradition throughout which it has retained its identity as a specialist institution dedicated to teaching and research in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private virtual views? SUMMARY:KQ Diversity Virtual Roundtable: LGBTQ+ networks
DESCRIPTION:  \nKNOWLEDGE QUARTER DIVERSITY VIRTUAL ROUNDTABLE: \nWHAT’S IN THE PLUS? \n10-11am\, Wednesday 15th April 2020 \n  \nLGBTQ+ network groups can transform the experiences of LGBTQ+ people at work. They provide a space for employees to support each other\, promote a better understanding of LGBTQ+ inclusion\, scrutinise an organisation’s policies and processes and offer suggestions for how these can be improved. A good network of this kind can radically improve the working-day experiences for LGBTQ + employees\, and create a better workplace culture for everyone within the organisation. \nMany Knowledge Quarter partners have an LGBTQ+ network of some kind\, and we’re delighted to invite colleagues who are involved in these networks to join us to share their experiences and challenges. Together\, we will hear from Stonewall and the Met Police about the setting up of such networks and will be asking: How can organisations continue to support our LGBTQ+ staff? Where and by what means can they improve? \nThis event is ideal for: \n\nStaff representing LGBTQ+ and similar networks in their organisations\nStaff looking to set up LGBTQ+ networks in their organisations\nSenior management\nDiversity and Inclusion professionals\nStaff developing diversity and inclusion strategies\n\nWe have two speakers joining us for this event: \nIlona Smith is a Senior Membership Programmes Manager at Stonewall in the Diversity Champions Team. In over three years with Stonewall\, Ilona has supported a range of UK and international organisations on LGBT inclusion in the workplace. Previously she has volunteered for a range of charities and was an LGBT activist in Poland\, where she’s from. \nLaks Mann is a Metropolitan Police Officer and a Committee Member of their LGBT+ Network. He was appointed by the Mayor of London to City Hall’s inaugural Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group\, where he advises through an intersectional lens of race\, ethnicity\, faith\, LGBTQ+\, social class and youth narratives. Laks is currently on Oxford University’s ‘Pathways to Success Leadership Programme’ for future BAME leaders. \nThis virtual roundtable will be held via Zoom. Please sign up via this Eventbrite link if you would like to attend and contact jemima.barnes@bl.uk with any queries. \nDiversity Roundtables are held bi-annually. Chatham House rules apply\, so partners can openly discuss advances made since a previous roundtable as well as any challenges they face in this area.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - KQ Conference Legacy Event: Debunking the Myth of Decolonisation
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed due to ongoing concerns with COVID-19. New date to be announced in the future. \nThere is nothing new in the seemingly recent calls for the repatriation and restitution of museum objects to former colonial countries. Whilst inaction may seem like the norm\, museums\, heritage organisations and governments are opening up the conversation around co-curation and decolonising the collections they hold. \nThis event will help to demystify the questions we have around colonial objects and artefacts such as: Where do we start with decolonising our collections? Is sending stuff back really the answer? How can decolonising rewrite the damaging narratives that have been told\, whilst owning up to the mistakes of the past? How do you make a history not Colonial? Should we continue to hold on to objects (and hence their narrative) in the 21st century? Who\, ultimately\, should be making the decisions when dealing with problematic collections? \nFollowing on from our 2019 conference\, this event will provide a forum in which people from across the KQ\, who are working on or interested in learning more about museum and gallery collections\, can learn and discuss more about the challenges and opportunities of a decolonising them. Drawing from the wealth of expertise in our membership\, we will attempt to understand what decolonisation means and how we might engage and enact upon the concept. \nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. If you do not work for a Knowledge Quarter partner\, but would like the opportunity to share your experience and knowledge in this field with our group\, please register your interest via email with Jemima Barnes: jemima.barnes@bl.uk

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Private View: Portraying Pregnancy
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter staff and friends are welcome to join our private breakfast view of Portraying Pregnancy at the Foundling Museum. Enjoy privileged out-of-hours access to the exhibition in the company of like-minded individuals living and working in the Knowledge Quarter. \nThis exhibition brings together images of women who were depicted at a time when they were pregnant (whether visibly so or not). Through paintings\, prints\, photographs\, objects and clothing from the fifteenth century to the present day\, discover the different ways in which pregnancy was\, or was not\, represented; how shifting social attitudes have impacted on depictions of pregnant women; how the possibility of death in childbirth brought additional tension to such representations; and how more recent images\, which often reflect increased female agency and empowerment\, still remain highly charged. \nAbout the Foundling Museum: \nThe Foundling Museum tells the history of the Foundling Hospital\, the UK’s first children’s charity and first public art gallery. The museum aims to inspire everyone to make a positive contribution to society\, by celebrating the power of individuals and the arts to change lives.

SUMMARY:Archives\, Digitisation and Copyright
DESCRIPTION:Archives play a vital role for most KQ organisations in linking people with their communities\, their heritage and in their current work. From a wider perspective\, archives can play a part in shaping research\, history\, public policy\, education and culture.\nWhile technology and the digital environment has posed many challenges to archives and concerns regarding the long-term preservation of records\, it has also changed society’s expectations about access to those records. \nThis event will provide a forum in which people from across the KQ\, who are working on or interested in learning more about archiving in the digital age\, can discuss the challenges and opportunities a digital archive presents. Drawing from the wealth of expertise in our membership\, we will consider the subject from a number of perspectives:\n– managing an archive\n– storing and displaying an organisation’s own collection\n– technical requirements of digitisation\n– the impact of copyright laws \nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. Please register with your organisational email on eventbrite here. If you do not work for a Knowledge Quarter partner\, but would like the opportunity to share your experience and knowledge in this field with our group\, please register your interest via email. \nThis event is a follow up to the KQ Future of Knowledge Conference\, sponsored by British Land.

SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Diversity Roundtable: Intersectionality in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Our Diversity Roundtable series is aimed at professionals actively working on improving diversity in their organisation. The next meeting in this series will explore the theme of intersectionality in the workplace. \n What is intersectionality? \nThe term ‘Intersectionality’ was coined in 1989 by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw to describe how race\, class\, gender\, and other individual characteristics “intersect” with one another and overlap. A person with an intersectional identity can also be described as “standing in the middle of the road being hit by cars from many sides”. \nA gay man may have to deal with homophobia in the workplace. A black man may have to deal with racism in the workplace. But a black gay man will have to deal with homophobia and racism\, often at the same time. It is often the case that he will face racism inside the LGBT community and homophobia in the black community. Similarly\, a disabled lesbian Muslim will have to deal with ableism\, homophobia\, Islamophobia\, racism and sexism. \nHaving an intersectional identity often generates a feeling that someone does not completely belong in one group or another\, and can lead to isolation\, depression and other mental health issues. \nWhy attend this event? \nWe hope this event will help KQ partners acknowledge intersectionality\, gain a better understanding of the terminology and explore how individuals and KQ organisations could create more inclusive environments where people with overlapping identities can succeed at all levels. \nWho should attend? \nThis event is ideal for: \n– Senior management \n– HR and recruitment professionals \n– People representing BAME\, LGBTQ+ and similar networks \n– People developing diversity and inclusion strategies \n– Anyone who identifies themselves as having intersectional identities or wishes to learn more about this. \nDiversity Roundtables are held bi-annually. Chatham House rules apply\, so partners can openly discuss advances made since a previous roundtable as well as any challenges they face in this area. \nPlease email: Kacie.Shoulders@bl.uk to secure your seat at the table. Let us know if you would like to present a Lightning Talk at the Breakfast\, or if you would like to host a roundtable.

SUMMARY:Data Diversity in Research: A call to action for concrete solutions
DESCRIPTION:The data gap issue is not new\, as Caroline Criado Perez demonstrated in her recent book\, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ – from stab vests to medical trials – the “one-size-fits-men” approach puts lives at risk. \nIn a recent blog\, BenevolentAI described how in 1992 the dosage for insomnia medication Zolpidem was based on research made up of predominantly male test subjects. It was only after 700 reports of impaired driving and road accidents that dosage for women was reconsidered. Equally\, diversity from an ethnic perspective is underrepresented. In 2014\, 86% of the clinical trials participants are white according to a study published in Nature. This means that patients may experience different side-effects or may fail to respond to treatments altogether. \nA huge part of the population is still left out of research\, yet\, we are living in an age of great innovation. New technologies are empowering scientists and researchers with previously unimaginable capabilities\, enabling greater discoveries. It is the right time to finally tackle the data-gap issue and work towards a better understanding of human behaviour offering equal chances to various populations to get relevant treatments and care. \nWe’re bringing this event together to provide a forum in which pharma industries\, academia\, institutions\, research groups and private companies based in the Knowledge Quarter can come together\, discuss the challenges of data diversity in research (particularly medical research)\, combine expertise\, and initiate projects to lead to more diversity in data. \nAgenda\n8:30 -9:00 | Networking Breakfast \n09:00 – 9:30 | Panel discussion \nThought leaders in science and tech discuss the challenges of data diversity that we face currently and help materialise possible tangible solutions through engagement and discussion with wider stakeholders in the meeting. \nChair: Adepeju Oshisanya\, BenevolentAI \n\nMaria Nelson\, Senior Head of Innovation Practice\, Digital Catapult\nJackie Hunter\, CE Clinical and Strategic Partnerships BenevolentAI\nRob Wilson\, Senior Regulatory Consultant\, DLRC\nDiane Harbison\, CEO Decipher Analytics\nDawn Duhaney\, Product Manager\, Wellcome Trust\n\n09:30 – 10:30 | Workshop \nWe will invite the audience to reflect on ideas to increase the diversity of data in the research space. \nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. \nFind out more about our Chair and Panel:

SUMMARY:Archives\, Digitisation and Copyright - A KQ Breakfast Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Archives are at the heart of many Knowledge Quarter organisations. For the public they are the backbone of research\, pivotal in widening debate and deepening our understanding of culture\, heritage and history.\nWhile technology and the digital environment offers a panacea for the long-term preservation of records\, it has also changed society’s expectations about access to those records. \nThis morning event will provide a forum in which professionals from across the KQ who are working on or interested in learning more about archiving in the digital age can discuss the myriad challenges and opportunities a digital archive presents\, as well as the earthly delights of being an archivist. Drawing from the wealth of expertise in our membership\, we will consider the subject from a number of perspectives: \n\nmanaging an archive\nstoring and displaying an organisations own collection\ntechnical requirements of digitisation\nthe impact of copyright laws\n\nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. Please register with your organisational email on eventbrite here. If you do not work for a Knowledge Quarter partner\, but would like the opportunity to share your experience and knowledge in this field with our group\, please register your interest via email. \n
