KQ staff and partner organisations will have the opportunity to have an exclusive look at Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave the British Museum’s new blockbuster exhibition. \nAbout Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave \nExperience the beautiful and sublime work of one of Japan’s greatest artists. \nKatsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely regarded as Japan’s most famous and influential artist. He produced works of astonishing quality right up until his death at the age of 90. This new exhibition will lead you on an artistic journey through the last 30 years of Hokusai’s life – a time when he produced some of his most famous masterpieces. \nThroughout the exhibition\, outstanding examples of Hokusai’s work will show the artist’s creative breadth and depth. A selection of superb landscapes is introduced with the iconic Great Wave – itself part of a print series of views of Mt Fuji. Intimate domestic scenes capture fleeting moments in private lives. Exquisite depictions of flora and fauna display an innate skill in representing the natural world. The artist’s imagination is given full rein in the portrayal of supernatural creatures such as ghosts and deities. Through all of these works\, explore Hokusai’s personal beliefs and gain a fascinating insight into the artist’s spiritual and artistic quest in his later years. \nThe exhibition will include prints\, paintings and illustrated books\, many of which are on loan from Japan\, Europe and the USA. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these extraordinary works together. \nPlease note for conservation reasons there will be a rotation of about half the artworks halfway through the exhibition run. Some works can only be displayed for a limited period of time due to their light sensitivity. The new works will substitute similar ones and will not affect the exhibition’s story. DESCRIPTION:Street artist Ben Eine announced for a night of life drawing and live street art\ncurated by Skip Gallery founders Catherine Borowski and Lee Baker \nAfter the success of Skip Gallery’s launch and the upcoming David Shrigley exhibition\, co-founders Catherine Borowski and Lee Baker are fast becoming known for their unique low-fi take on the gallery experience. In latest news\, pioneering street artist and master of street typography Ben Eine has been announced for SKIP Night\, an evening of life drawing and live street art as part of Art Night 2017. \nSKIP Night will feature life drawing classes inside a closed skip situated in the playground of the Sir John Cass’s Foundation Primary School with classes taught by Draw Brighton founder\, Jake Spicer. Featuring a variety of models and poses\, the classes will encourage visitors to take up their pencils and sketch a spotlit life model from the intimate\, amphitheater style seating area inside the skip. \nThroughout the evening\, artist Ben Eine will create a live piece\, spraying the interior of the skip as well as appearing as a life model in a surprise time slot to be announced only on the evening itself. The skip will remain in situ post Art Night\, housing an exhibition by Ben Eine until 7th July. \nArt Night 2017 will take place throughout city’s East End during the night of Saturday 1 July. \nHailed as a pioneer of letterform street art\, Ben Eine began exploring the distinctions between street art and graffiti during his highly successful career as a renowned writer in the underground London graffiti scene. SUMMARY:Daniel Wohl & London Contemporary Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Wohl’s music blends electronics with acoustic instrumentation to often ‘surprising and provocative effect’ (NPR). He is joined by the LCO and visual artist Daniel Schwarz for this special concert featuring music from the celebrated album Holographic. \nHe has worked with chamber ensembles and orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, American Symphony Orchestra\, New York Youth Symphony\, Sõ Percussion and has collaborated with artists such as Laurel Halo\, Julia Holter\, Lucky Dragons\, and Son Lux. \nIn 2016\, Holographic\, Daniel’s sophomore album was released on New Amsterdam Records. Commissioned by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Indianapolis Museum of Art\, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music Series and the Baryshnikov Arts Center. \nWinner at the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards 2015 (Ensemble category)\, the London Contemporary Orchestra has established itself as one of the UK’s most innovative and respected ensembles – promoting the best new music and cross-arts collaborations to an increasingly wide audience. Formed in 2008 by co-artistic directors Robert Ames and Hugh Brunt\, the LCO has collaborated with a distinguished array of composers\, artists and brands\, including Radiohead\, Secret Cinema\, Vivienne Westwood\, Goldfrapp\, Beck and Foals. \nFor this special concert\, Daniel Wohl and the LCO will perform music from Holographic. DESCRIPTION:Come along to a unique event to explore the impact of the Reformation on English literature on Tuesday\, 27 June hosted by the Friends of Senate House Library\, School of Advanced Study\, University of London. Professor of Renaissance studies Tom Healy\, will lead with the support of famous actors Joanna David\, Nickolas Grace and David Robb\, who will perform verses from a wide range of poets and authors of the period. \nJoanna David is an acclaimed actor known for her television and film work. She appeared in The Last of the Mohicans and has had parts in many popular TV series including Sense and Sensibility\, War and Peace\, Inspector Morse and Midsomer Murders. She is vice president of the Theatrical Guild. \nNikolas Grace played Hamlet for the Derby Playhouse opening\, and has appeared in many West End plays including Amadeus\, Richard 11\, Candide\, Chariots of Fire and Sunday in the Park. He played Blanche in Brideshead Revisited\, Harry in Heat and Dust\, the sheriff in Robin of Sherwood and Oscar Wilde in Salome’s Last Dance. He is a fellow of the Royal Central School and a Companion of LIPA. \nDavid Robb has starred in various British films and television shows including the BBC’s award-winning Downton Abbey series in which he played Dr Clarkson\, Wolf Hall and Sharpe. He has also performed as a voice actor for several Star Wars video games and has worked extensively on a range of BBC radio dramas. \nGuests will also be able to view the University of London’s second major exhibition\, Reformation: Shattered World\, New Beginnings\, which includes installations and rare texts. DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter partner Bennetts Associates is celebrating thirty years in practice this year. To explore the London Festival of Architecture 2017 theme ‘memory’ their are hosting a photography exhibition entitled 30 Images from 30 Years in Practice of the thirty best images by the architectural photographers that their have worked with over the past thirty years. From their first major project on a Reading business park in 1987 to Brighton Library in 2002\, Edinburgh University’s Informatics Forum in 2008 and London’s Shaftesbury Theatre in 2016 their have always commissioned photographers of the highest calibre. \nWork by long-standing collaborators will be shown alongside recent images. It is also an opportunity to see the range of work and leisure space at Bennetts Associates’ London studio – a series of historic and new structures in Clerkenwell. \nThe exhibition is open from Friday 23 to Saturday 24 June\, from 10am to 4pm. No need to book in advance\, just turn up.\n_____ \nThe London Festival of Architecture is Europe’s biggest annual architecture festival\, and returns to the capital from 1-30 June 2017 with hundreds of events exploring ‘memory’. Austerity policies\, increasing social inequality\, the general assault on collective policies of social welfare\, the changes imposed on health care\, the needs of an ageing population\, the increasing worldwide visibility of violence (domestic violence\, rape as a weapon of war\, ‘honour’ killing\, female genital mutilation)\, all of these intensifying trends are placing women under renewed pressure and are heightening the need for women to reflect\, speak and find new means of expression. At the same time\, the rise of populism in the context of Brexit in the UK and the election of Donald Trump in the US\, with the growing racism that has accompanied both\, are contributing to a climate where bigotry and misogyny are granted new permission to parade themselves in the media and on the streets. Opening and closing the conference with poetry and literary readings by renowned creative writers from across the globe\, our aim is to demonstrate the central role of cultural expression in representing\, illuminating and resisting this new climate in which women find themselves today. \nThe conference aims to address these issues\, and their implications for feminist thought\, activism and creativity\, and in relation to public policy in the UK and globally. To that end\, we are especially committed to fostering a unique atmosphere of dialogue and exchange which will cross the boundaries between scholars\, practitioners and literary writers\, between generations of feminists\, across different ethnic and cultural groups\, between the trans-movement and feminism\, and between critical thinking and the demand for social change.  The Conference will therefore gather together academics\, literary scholars and poets\, professionals\, policy makers and feminist activists in the realm of health care\, education\, domestic labour and sexual violence. Are our discovery\, access and preservation systems fit for the future? \nFind out more and join us for a continuing debate. \nThe Academic Book of the Future project was a two-year research project\, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Library\, focusing on the current and possible future states of academic books in the changing academic\, publishing and library environments. What you want to do is impossible!” \nThat is what all experts\, analysts and the Yemenis themselves told the Swedish traveller Mikael Strandberg. But he has done the impossible. He has made his way into what many say is one of the most difficult countries in the world to enter\, and one of the most dangerous. \nTogether with the Swedish journalist\, Tanya Holm\, Kensington the Camel and a few of the oldest inhabitants of Arabia\, the Bedus he has travelled through one of the hottest deserts on earth. They didn’t meet any terrorists\, religious extremists and nobody got killed. They didn’t even feel any serious fear. DESCRIPTION:The Great Get Together will take place on the weekend of 17 June\, marking the anniversary of Jo Cox’s murder. Before her death\, Cox said “there is more that unites us than divides us” and with that in mind The Great Get Together will aim to bring together local communities across the country with street parties\, picnics and barbeques hosted by local residents over the weekend. \nLaunched by the Duchess of Cornwall and Jamie Oliver\, Knowledge Quarter partner The Foundling Museum will take part in this event by hosting a picnic in Brunswick Square\, where families will be encouraged to share their favourite children’s book. Whether it’s Harry Potter\, Jane Eyre or the Jungle Book. Stage and television actors will be on hand to read your stories aloud and bring much-loved tales to life. \nThe Roundhouse will be running free hula hooping and circus workshops during the afternoon. Coram’s Fields Youth Centre will also be hosting a free arts and crafts stall in the park giving children and the community a snapshot of activities taking place in the Youth Centre on weekday evenings. DESCRIPTION:The picturesque garden of the British Medical Association (BMA) Headquarters is a hidden secret in central London\, designed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and on the site of Charles Dickens’ own house and garden. Our 2017 planting explores medicinal herbs and their historical role in health and nutrition. \nThis year the BMA garden will be part of the Open Garden Squares Weekend. Through interactive exhibits and onsite experts\, our garden will showcase local community organisations using gardens to improve health\, wellbeing and nutrition of patients and communities in London. \nPlease see the information sheet for the full programme. SUMMARY:Conservation Lecture: The Paradise of Eternal Spring
DESCRIPTION:The Churches Conservation Trust is delighted to invite colleagues from Knowledge Quarter organisations to a lecture on the discovery of a rare 15th century Rose Brass. Hear from Rachel Morley as she discusses where her search for the brass took her and how\, after more than 30 years in hiding\, it was returned back home in St Mary’s Church\, Edlesborough.  \nRose Brasses are engraved plaques fitted in church floors. While these symbols of the Virgin Mary were common features in medieval English churches\, today only a few have survived. Data gathering technology such as fitbits helps monitor heart rates\, blood sugar levels and sleep cycles\, whereas IBM’s A.I. system\, Watson\, gives scientists insight into how genes affect our health. \nIn the 21st century\, medical developments are relying on data more than ever before. How can we balance the potential benefits of using personal data for healthcare research\, with the ethical dilemmas they provoke? Should we allow companies to use medical data for technological developments and interventions that may improve our lifestyles\, or does this contravene our privacy rights? SUMMARY:Digital Library of the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:In response to the tragic loss and ongoing threat to the cultural heritage of the Middle East through destruction\, looting\, and illegal resale\, and firmly believing in the educational\, social\, and economic benefits created by access to cultural material. The Digital Library of the Middle East (DLME) at The Aga Khan University will bring together a publicly available\, online platform for noteworthy Middle Eastern collections from around the world. \nCommitted to international cooperation in the region and around the world\, we propose a discussion that outlines the platform\, the creation process\, and the importance of collaboration. We are focused on how the DLME can serve the many communities of interest\, from advanced scholars to schoolchildren. In addition\, we will provide a coherent approach to the cataloguing\, description\, documentation\, and digitization of hidden collections\, including providing funding for that critical task. \nThe talk is to introduce the Digital Library of the Middle East to collaborators in the local community; we propose a presentation by DLME Co-Founders Charles Henry of the Council on Library and Information Resources and Peter Herdrich of the Antiquities Coalition at the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations. DESCRIPTION:YAMI-ICHI (‘Black Market’) is an international event that replicates an art auction and employs non-monetary form of exchange. The concept behind this project is to engage a number of young and emerging artists with the general public/local & business communities. YAMI-ICHI aims to challenge a perception of art as a commodity in the current art market. Ultimately\, the project aims to encourage young and emerging artists to re-evaluate how their work can be perceived and connect them with potential clients or future collaborators. \nWe held our debut event in Japan in March\, which attracted over 700 people over three days. Our second event in London is going to be held between 26th and 29th of May.
