SUMMARY:KQ Private View: This Fascist Life
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \n\n\n\nJoin the KQ for this In-Person Private View\, in collaboration with the The Wiener Holocaust Library. \nIn the years after the First World War\, fascist political parties\, militia and movements emerged across Europe. United by ultra-nationalist ideas and similarities of style and action\, these movements shaped\, and in some places remade\, politics and society. They mobilised on the streets to attack their opponents and to support the accession to power of fascist parties in countries such as Italy\, Germany\, and Austria. Later\, they helped to enable German occupations and the Nazis’ policies of persecution and genocide across Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nDrawing upon The Wiener Holocaust Library’s unique archival collections\, as well as the expertise of an international group of specialists in interwar fascism\, this exhibition focuses on the experiences of the rank-and-file members of fascist movements in the interwar period. SUMMARY:Dr Helen Fry: Remembering the Jewish refugees' war effort at the Wiener Library
DESCRIPTION:Historian Dr Helen Fry will speak at the Wiener Library about her research into the 10\,000 Jewish refugees from Nazi-controlled Europe who fought for Britain in the armed services or the secret service during the Second World War.\nThe event will also include a discussion about the feasibility of fundraising for a memorial in recognition of their contributions to the war effort. Attendees are encouraged to share the accounts (and memorabilia) of their relatives who were in the armed services\, the secret service or otherwise helped the war effort. \nABOUT DR HELEN FRY: \nDr Fry has written and edited of twenty-five books. Her works cover the social history of the Second World War: British Intelligence and the secret war; spies and espionage; and MI9 escape and evasion.  Dr Fry continues to bring fresh insight into the clandestine operations of the Second World War\, including the story of the bugging of the rooms at Trent Park\, North London\, in which were detained numerous senior Nazi prisoners of war. Because of her expertise in British Intelligence in the First and Second World Wars\, she has been involved in a number of documentaries – including David Jason’s Secret Service – as well as conducting advisory work for television and theatre. \n  \nBook your place here. \n

DESCRIPTION:*Photograph of Dr. Alfred Wiener in his office in Manchester Square\, London\, c.1950\, Wiener Library Collections\nThe Wiener Library’s spring 2019 exhibition\, Crimes Uncovered: The First Generation of Holocaust Researchers\, traces the stories and legacies of the individuals and institutions who first collected evidence of the crimes of the Holocaust.\nThe exhibition commemorates the life and work of some of these pioneers of Holocaust research\, including\, among others\, Emmanuel Ringelblum and Rachel Auerbach\, whose Oyneg Shabbos organisation gathered and concealed evidence from inside the Warsaw Ghetto; Raphael Lemkin\, who used the information he amassed about the atrocities of the Holocaust to develop the legal concept of genocide; the novelist and writer Vasily Grossman\, who documented the extermination of Soviet Jews; Alfred Wiener\, founder of The Wiener Library\, who collected and disseminated evidence of Nazi activities from the mid-1920s onwards; Eva Reichmann\, who launched one of the earliest projects to collect eye-witness testimonies to the Holocaust. \nUnder the most adverse conditions and often against indifference\, denunciation and violence\, they shaped the foundations of our knowledge of the Holocaust today. \nThe exhibition runs from 27 February 2019 until 17 May 2019 and is free to the public.
