SUMMARY:KQ Lightning Talks: What is light in the Knowledge Quarter?
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nWhat Is Light: a series of lightning talks from the Knowledge Quarter \nThe Bloomsbury Festival celebrates contemporary Bloomsbury; a hotbed of creativity and pioneering development which has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the country. \nThrough work with hundreds of local partners\, Bloomsbury Festival amplifies cultural development and engagement in the community and provides opportunities for practitioners of all genres to enrich their creative practice. Working with partners from across Bloomsbury’s diverse academic\, professional and resident community the Shining Light theme will act as a catalyst to a wide spectrum of events including outdoor exhibitions and installations\, music\, dance\, theatre\, talks\, walks and more. \nThe programme places the stories of the people\, places and cultures of Bloomsbury at it’s heart\, taking the creative talent of local established institutions and adding in emerging talent with new themes and threads – shining light on the tradition of freethinking and celebrating the ‘rebels’ within Bloomsbury. \nThis year\, the KQ will present an hour of lightning talks on the theme of ‘What is Light in the Knowledge Quarter?’ exploring everything from enlightenment to illumination\, from scientific\, cultural\, and historic perspectives.

SUMMARY:KQ Private Tour: Writing in Times of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter staff and friends are welcome to join our private evening view of Writing in Times of Conflict at Univeristy of London’s Senate House Library. Enjoy privileged out-of-hours access to the exhibition in the company of lovely\, like-minded individuals living and working in the Knowledge Quarter. \nThe exhibition begins in 1919 just after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles marked the formal end of the First World War\, which led to the establishment of contemporary peace movements. It explores some of the most significant military\, environmental and economic conflicts that ensued right up until 2019\, touching on current political issues such as Brexit\, economic inequality\, and climate change. \nThere are many bold stories by well-known writers on display. These include one of the first editions of John Maynard Keynes’ The Economic Consequences of the Peace\, a rare signed copy of in our time by Ernest Hemingway\, a letter from Virginia Woolf describing the WWII bombers flying overhead\, and a first edition of Carol Ann Duffy’s thought-provoking play My Country: a Work in Progress. These are complemented by unique photographs and documents\, such as one of the few surviving photostatic copies of the ‘Nazi Black Book’ written in 1940\, listing peace activists and politicians to be targeted by the Gestapo. \nTold through Senate House Library’s global collections\, Writing in Times of Conflict combines a selection of narratives by writers\, journalists\, politicians and local communities from Africa\, Latin America and Europe. \nBook your tickets here

SUMMARY:Writing Women: reviving Kana Shodo (‘Woman-Hand’)\, a forgotten female script
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Writing Day\, the Book and Print Initiative at the Institute of English Studies\, School of Advanced Study\, has invited Kaoru Akagawa\, designated Master of Japanese calligraphy\, to tell the story of Kana Shodo\, which was developed and used by noblewomen to express themselves freely within the constraints of 10th-century Japanese court life. It is an official event of the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020. \nThis event is free but you must register your attendance here.
