SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: The Silk Road\, A Living History
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nThe Aga Khan Foundation UK present an an exclusive virtual private view of their open-air photography exhibition about the people\, places and cultures encountered across 17 countries between the UK and China along the ancient Silk Road. \nComprised of nearly 160 photographs mounted on 24 photo benches\, The Silk Road: A Living History invites the viewer to take a 40\,000km journey from London to Beijing. The exhibition documents an overland journey photographer Christopher Wilton-Steer undertook in 2019 following the historic trade route. \nThe show aims to celebrate the diversity of cultural expressions found along the route\, highlight examples of how historical practices\, rituals and customs live on today\, and also reveal some of the connections between what appear at first glance to be very different cultures. It also seeks to engender interest and understanding between distant cultures and challenge perceptions of less well known and understood parts of the world. Photographs from Iran\, Turkmenistan\, Uzbekistan\, Tajikistan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Pakistan\, India\, China and elsewhere will feature. Additionally\, the exhibition aims to raise awareness about AKDN’s contributions to improving the quality of life across social\, economic and cultural spheres in Central and South Asia as well as the Middle East. \nChristopher Wilton-Steer is a travel photographer and Head of Communications at Aga Khan Foundation UK. His professional and personal work take him to remote locations across Africa\, Asia and the Middle East. Through his photography\, he is interested in exploring less well documented and often misunderstood parts of the world in an effort to help demystify them and build bridges of interest and understanding between different cultures. Ultimately\, he wishes for his photographs to encourage others to take the road less travelled and explore\, experience and encounter new places\, people and cultures. His work has been featured in magazines and newspapers around the world including National Geographic\, The Guardian\, CNN\, Financial Times\, and Der Spiegel amongst others. \nPhoto credit © Christopher Wilton-Steer

SUMMARY:KQ Exhibition Professionals Meeting: Emotional Evaluation of Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \nKnowledge Quarter Exhibition Professionals Meeting: opportunities for collaboration for Covid Recovery \nJoin fellow KQ Archive professionals on the afternoon of 27th April for a virtual coffee where we will explore the theme of ‘Emotional Evaluations of Exhibitions’. We will be joined by Frances Jeens\, Director of Jewish Museum London\, who will share some of the work they’ve been doing on measuring emotional responses to exhibitions. We will also use the meeting to reflect on the last 12 months and how our organisations have responded to the various challenges. \nEmotional Evaluation at Jewish Museum London \nThree years ago the Jewish Museum London began a new method of evaluation based on the desire to measure the impact of their programmes through the emotional responses of visitors across all their experiences within the Museum. A pilot programme was launched to trial collecting statistical data on how the Museum emotionally interacts with its visitors\, which has since grown to both change the creation of their programmes and how they evaluate them. \nJoin the session to both see the results from the initial pilot project and to hear how this has impacted the Jewish Museum London’s work both before and during Covid-19 and their plans for reopening our Museum building. We’ll explore the idea of positive and negative emotions when experienced within the Museum and the idea of emotional hacking and empathy activation. \nAbout our Networks: \nOur Breakfast meet-ups give professionals working across the Knowledge Quarter the chance to keep up-to-date with all that is happening in the area\, as well as share tips and experience on what gets people through the door and engaging online. \nBreakfast meetings are relaxed\, friendly sessions; grab a coffee\, a pastry and join a table. We open proceedings with a handful of Lightning Talks from external organisations and from a selection of partners. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private virtual views? Sign up to our updates here.

DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nAge UK Camden have been documenting their work in the community throughout the COVID19 crisis. In this Virtual Private View of Julian Claxton’s photography\, Age UK Camden will share an intimate and unseen side to the pandemic. \nAge UK Camden organised and launched an initial response to the COVID 19 crisis on Friday 13th March 2020\, providing emergency food parcels via donations. When national lockdown was announced in late March there was an inevitable surge in demand for support\, and clients were becoming increasingly distressed. \nAge UK received over 7000 referrals and delivered over 20\,000 bags of food throughout the borough. \nThe narrative and images in the exhibition focus on the local people who made this response possible; including those from Age UK who put themselves at risk every day for the good of others\, to source and pack essential provisions for those who were unable to get food for themselves\, the delivery drivers and those making regular phone calls and caring for older people shielding at home. \n‘We are very proud to display these achievements through a gallery of such impactful imagery.’ Nikki Morris\, CEO Age UK Camden. \nPhotographer Julian Claxton has held numerous exhibitions\, been featured nationally & internationally in print and won numerous awards\, including the 2015 Travel Media Awards for documentary images of children in rural Uganda\, the 2016 Event Photography Awards for ‘Election day’ documentary and reached the final of the 2013 National Geographic competition. Julian documented Age UK supporting the Camden community in lockdown through photography. These images tell the story of the organisation\, the people and the passion for providing services for older people\, as well as the struggles and emotions experienced in such a challenging environment. \nAbout Age UK Camden: \nAge UK Camden is an independent charity working in Camden to offer support and services to older people. They provide advice\, enable independence and combat loneliness across the borough. \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. To ensure you are able to join the event\, please ‘arrive’ (via the link sent through Eventbrite) around 5 minutes before the start. This will ensure you are able to be let into the Zoom room before we reach full capacity. \nOnce you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive a Zoom link by email 48 hrs before\, 2 hrs before and 10 minutes before the event\, please check your JUNK folder for these emails as they are sent directly through Eventbrite’s system. \nYou do not need to download Zoom software in order to participate – there is a web browser version which works perfectly well. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with the KQ events manager Bhav. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private virtual views? SUMMARY:KQ Press and PR Professionals Meeting: Working with Press in the time of Covid
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter Press and PR Professionals Meeting: Working with Press in the time of Covid \nSign up on eventbrite here.  \nJoin fellow KQ Press and PR Professionals on the morning of Monday 22 March for a virtual coffee. This event will be hosted by Elle Docx\, KQ Board Member and Director of Communications for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. \nIt is easy to get comfortable with your working habits and it is a daunting prospect to have your traditional and reliable methods uprooted and challenged. Press in particular is a very hands-on and sociable job role that often requires meeting journalists and contacts face-to-face. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment invite you to this knowledge-sharing session to talk about how working with press has changed during the pandemic. This session will provide an opportunity to reflect on how strategies\, attitudes\, relationships and well-being have been affected and share your experience with other press workers from a variety of industries. \nThe Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment are a historically informed Orchestra who are Artistic Associate at Kings Place. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Aby Warburg’s Bilderatlas Mnemosyne
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nJoin the Director of the Warburg Institute\, Professor Bill Sherman\, and archivist Claudia Wedepohl\, in this exclusive showcase of the final and most unconventional project of Warburg’s lifetime. This Virtual Private View will bring together two exhibitions of Aby Warburg’s legendary Bilderatlas Mnemosyne\, revealing Warburg’s revolutionary understanding of art and cultural theory. \nFor the first time since 1929\, all 63 panels of Aby Warburg’s renowned Bilderatlas Mnemosyne have been reconstructed using Warburg’s original materials for display at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In a simultaneous exhibition at the Gemäldegalerie you can see some 50 original artworks in the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin chosen by Warburg for inclusion in his encyclopedic atlas of images. These two very special exhibitions\, taking place in Germany\, present the collection as close to the original as we will ever get to see in our lifetimes. \nIn collaboration with the Warburg Institute\, University of London\, the curators located most of the 971 illustrations from the 400\,000 objects in the Institute’s Photographic Collection and Library to display Warburg’s unfinished magnum opus in its entirety for the first time since his death. \nBill Sherman is the director of the Warburg Institute and professor in the History of the Book and Techniques of Scholarship. Sherman was founding director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the University of York\, and he moved to the Warburg from the Victoria and Albert Museum\, where he served as Director of Research and Collections and head of the V&A Research Institute (VARI). \nClaudia Wedepohl is the Archivist of the Warburg Institute. She has studied Art History and Italian Literature in Göttingen and Hamburg\, and joined the staff of the Warburg Institute in 2000. She held fellowships at the Center for Literary and Cultural Research in Berlin and at the Center for Advanced Studies\, Morphomata\, at the University of Cologne (2010-11). \nAbout the Warburg Institute:  \nFounded by Aby Warburg in Hamburg at the end of the nineteenth century and exiled from Germany in 1933\, the Warburg Institute attracted the greatest humanist scholars and philosophers of the time. The Warburg Institute quickly became one of the leading centres in Germany for the understanding of the interactions between images and society across time and space.  It transformed the histories of art\, literature\, and music\, and in emphasizing fields such as astrology and magic\, anticipated many of the developments in the modern understanding of the history of science. \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. In doing so\, this exhibition sweeps away ideas based on racist theories and hopes to contribute to both awareness of African identity and pride of African Heritage. \n \nSites and monuments are physical representations of histories\, heritage\, and developments in society. This exhibition aims to display the diversity and richness of African cultures as part of world history through the study of African Monuments; bringing awareness and pride of African roots and contributions to other cultures.\n \nAfrican cultures suffered extensively from slavery from the 16th to the 19th Century\, and during the acceleration of European colonisation through the 19th and early 20th Century. Black Monuments Matter aspires to create links to living African heritage by making it visible\, assessable\, and known to as many people as possible.\n \nMany of Africa’s monuments are protected by UNESCO and have been given world heritage status. They are also protected and supported by national heritage authorities and by the support of international organisations such as the World Monument Fund and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.\n \nThrough an approach founded on the latest knowledge and technology\, this special private view event will offer Knowledge Quarter staff an opportunity to learn more about the glorious monuments and sites of African heritage and black cultures across Sub Saharan Africa.\n \nPresented in partnership with the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations at the Aga Khan University in London\, and the Zamani Project at the University of Cape Town.

SUMMARY:The Second Pandemic: Misinformation and Perception
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are available through via Eventbrite here. \nWhat happens to our perception of truth during a pandemic? What happens in our brains that makes us more susceptible to believing and spreading false information in times of crisis? Mixing storytelling and science\, Christopher Bailey\, Arts and Health Lead at the World Health Organization\, will draw on real life examples\, taken from pandemics and wars\, to explore how rumours and false narratives proliferate in a crisis. In telling these stories\, Bailey\, an actor and playwright from New York\, strips away the layers of our psychology to reveal what makes us fearful\, impressionable and fundamentally human. \nMisinformation and fake news is also linked to the rise of “fake medicines” claiming to cure COVID-19. Christopher Bailey’s performance will be followed by a panel discussion including Founder of UCL Fight the Fakes\, Oksana Pyzik\, and Professor Robert Horne of UCL School of Pharmacy to further explore this growing global health threat and its’ psychological underpinnings. The panel will be moderated by Bhavit Mehta of the Knowledge Quarter and will feature a guest appearance from the WHO’s Special Envoy for COVID-19 David Nabarro. \n“When facing the unknown we often tell a story to help make sense of what we are experiencing\, even\, and sometime especially\, if few facts are available.” ~ Christopher Bailey \nThe WHO’s Arts and Health program explores the evidence base for the health benefits of the arts\, and the practical implementation of arts-based approaches to improve health at the local level. \nJoin this moving\, entertaining and informative event brought to you by the Knowledge Quarter\, in partnership with UCL School of Pharmacy and the World Health Organization. \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - KQ Conference Legacy Event: Debunking the Myth of Decolonisation
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed due to ongoing concerns with COVID-19. New date to be announced in the future. \nThere is nothing new in the seemingly recent calls for the repatriation and restitution of museum objects to former colonial countries. Whilst inaction may seem like the norm\, museums\, heritage organisations and governments are opening up the conversation around co-curation and decolonising the collections they hold. \nThis event will help to demystify the questions we have around colonial objects and artefacts such as: Where do we start with decolonising our collections? Is sending stuff back really the answer? How can decolonising rewrite the damaging narratives that have been told\, whilst owning up to the mistakes of the past? How do you make a history not Colonial? Should we continue to hold on to objects (and hence their narrative) in the 21st century? Who\, ultimately\, should be making the decisions when dealing with problematic collections? \nFollowing on from our 2019 conference\, this event will provide a forum in which people from across the KQ\, who are working on or interested in learning more about museum and gallery collections\, can learn and discuss more about the challenges and opportunities of a decolonising them. Drawing from the wealth of expertise in our membership\, we will attempt to understand what decolonisation means and how we might engage and enact upon the concept. \nWho should attend?\nYou must work for a Knowledge Quarter partner organisation. If you do not work for a Knowledge Quarter partner\, but would like the opportunity to share your experience and knowledge in this field with our group\, please register your interest via email with Jemima Barnes: jemima.barnes@bl.uk

It explores some of the most significant military\, environmental and economic conflicts that ensued right up until 2019\, touching on current political issues such as Brexit\, economic inequality\, and climate change. \nThere are many bold stories by well-known writers on display. These include one of the first editions of John Maynard Keynes’ The Economic Consequences of the Peace\, a rare signed copy of in our time by Ernest Hemingway\, a letter from Virginia Woolf describing the WWII bombers flying overhead\, and a first edition of Carol Ann Duffy’s thought-provoking play My Country: a Work in Progress. These are complemented by unique photographs and documents\, such as one of the few surviving photostatic copies of the ‘Nazi Black Book’ written in 1940\, listing peace activists and politicians to be targeted by the Gestapo. \nTold through Senate House Library’s global collections\, Writing in Times of Conflict combines a selection of narratives by writers\, journalists\, politicians and local communities from Africa\, Latin America and Europe. \nBook your tickets here
