SUMMARY:Echoes from the Birdcage
DESCRIPTION:Echoes from the Birdcage is the world premiere of a new composition to emerge from Dame Evelyn Glennie’s time as the PRS Foundation and King’s Cross Musician in Residence\, written by Jill Jarman in collaboration with Dame Evelyn Glennie. \nEchoes from the Birdcage will be performed for the first time on Friday 22nd December 2017 at the Platform Theatre in Kings Cross\, with a 2:30pm matinee performance and a 7:30pm evening performance. Tickets are available to purchase online now from: http://bit.ly/EchoesFromTheBirdcage and are priced £10 (for concessions) and £18 (for adults). \nInformed and inspired by the sounds collected and shared by the King’s Cross community\, Echoes from the Birdcage tells a story of the place in six movements\, displaying all the different aspects of the area and how much it has changed through history. In Motion; Global Chant; and The Spaces in-between are just a few of the named movements. \nAn amazing sound world is created by percussionist Evelyn Glennie with an ensemble of musicians\, to bring to life the sounds and emotions of the transformation of King’s Cross. \nEvelyn Glennie said\, “These last few months have been a learning curve; connecting to the King’s Cross community has taught me so much about this place right at the heart of London\, so much so that I can say my relationship and appreciation of the area has expanded through this residency. I’m proud of the piece of music Jill [Jarman] has written – Echoes from the Birdcage – and believe it will have a lasting legacy not only in the King’s Cross area\, but hopefully as an inspirational piece that gets people thinking about the sound environment of their particular space.” \nMaxine Shannon\, Project Manager (Events & Enlivenment)\, Kings Cross said\, “We have been thrilled to work with Dame Evelyn as the King’s Cross Musician in Residence throughout 2017 and we are looking forward to seeing the culmination of her work during the final performance in December. It has been great to see the local community playing such an active role in the evolving arts and enlivenment programme at King’s Cross\, London’s new creative quarter.”   \nVanessa Reed\, Chief Executive\, PRS Foundation said\, “It has been fantastic to see Dame Evelyn Glennie and her team reach out to the schools\, workers and residents of Kings Cross this year and really get them thinking about\, and involved in\, the creation of new music and how their local environment can provide inspiration. These collaborations have shaped Evelyn’s new piece\, and we’re all very much looking forward to hearing it on 22nd December. ”

SUMMARY:Memento – Poet in the City and Aurora Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Technology has rapidly transformed the way we store memory and our very own relationship to this critical aspect of being human. What can music and poetry tell us about this dramatic shift in our everyday lives? \nIn this cross-disciplinary event\, Poet in the City and Aurora Orchestra uncover the story of a ground-breaking new technology that will enable us to remember more than ever before. Through the world premieres of electrically-charged new music and poetry\, they explore the question: what happens when matter\, music\, and language are placed under pressure? \nInspired by this question\, composer Martin Suckling and poet Frances Leviston have created electrically-charged new works that draw on the memory of two great artistic forbearers\, Franz Schubert and Emily Dickinson. Suckling explores the idea of music under pressure by echoing\, distorting\, and crystallising fragments of Schubert’s sublime String Quintet. Leviston references the voltage of Dickinson’s densely packed poems and wonders how Dickinson might have responded to this advance in technology. Experimental physicist Stuart Parkin\, one of the pioneers spearheading this new technology\, joins Suckling and Leviston to present his reflections. \nCommissioned by Bio Nano Consulting Ltd for the dissemination of PETMEM (Piezoelectronic Transduction Memory Device)\, a European Commission-funded project which brings together universities\, research institutions and companies to explore low-voltage memory technologies. \nTickets on sale now – KQ partners get 15% discount by using code Memento15. \npoetinthecity.co.uk\nauroraorchestra.com \nPhoto: Aurora Orchestra © Simon Weir

SUMMARY:“Caste discrimination in the UK” Documentary screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:The caste system has been a source of much debate in South Asia. But what happens when British Indians say caste discrimination has followed them overseas? \nCaste Aside is a documentary about the British government’s controversial decision to introduce legislation against caste discrimination in the UK. \nHighlighting both sides of this heated debate\, the documentary speaks to Dalit rights activists\, Hindu community leaders\, academics and lawyers\, as well as those who say they have been discriminated against on the basis of their caste – here in Britain. \nWhile some members of the British Indian community believe that making caste an aspect of the Equality Act 2010 would shine a negative light on the Hindu community and create social tension\, others believe that caste legislation is a necessary protection for victims. \nThe UK government has been torn between these two groups for years\, finally resulting in a public consultation to seek the views of the general public on the issue. With the consultation now complete\, both sides await a response. \nWith a big decision on the government’s hands\, Caste Aside highlights the bigger picture behind the public consultation and the story behind the UK’s caste problem. Who will the government ultimately believe? \nClick here for more information and to register to attend this screening.

SUMMARY:“Dangers and Delusions”? Perspectives on the women’s suffrage movement.
DESCRIPTION:Displaying items from UCL Special Collections\, this exhibition examines the actions and reactions attending the women’s suffrage movement from the 1860s up to the Representation of the People Act 1918. Satirical commentaries including Laurence Housman’s Anti-Suffrage Alphabet are set alongside campaign literature and petitions for and against legislative change. \nThe movement calling for women’s right to vote in the United Kingdom was drawn out over several decades and generated intense differences of opinion\, not only between those for and against electoral equality\, but also within pro- and anti-suffrage campaigns. This exhibition draws on items held in UCL Special Collections – satirical commentaries\, campaign literature\, personal notes and petitions – to examine the actions and reactions surrounding the case for universal suffrage\, from the 1860s up to the fi rst legislative step towards equality for women: the Representation of the People Act\, 1918.

SUMMARY:Charles Holden Lecture with Dr Julia Walworth- 'The Sterling Library: 20th century Book Collecting and 21st century Book History'
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Senate House Library present their annual Holden Lecture with speaker Dr Julia Walworth\, Fellow Librarian of Merton College\, University of Oxford. \nThe Sterling Library started out as the private collection of Sir Louis Sterling (1879-1958)\, a wealthy businessman. When the collection arrived at the Senate House Library in 1956 it comprised more than 4000 rare printed books and manuscripts of English literary works from the middle ages to the twentieth century\, and it has now grown to more than 7000 volumes. \nIn this year’s Charles Holden Lecture\, Dr Julia Walworth will introduce some of these treasures and explore how the role and function of the Sterling Library has evolved — from a collection of ‘trophy books’ to an invaluable resource for the University’s many activities in the burgeoning field of the History of the Book. \nTo find out more and register for the lecture\, please click here. \nTo find out more and join the Friends of Senate House Library\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Over My Shoulder
DESCRIPTION:This project derives from from a curious connection between two very different and fascinating singers. Elisabeth Schumann\, international classical diva\, and Jessie Matthews\, darling of the 1930s stage and screen\, are buried in the same West London churchyard. \nEach of these women was hugely famous in her day\, reaching the very peak of the performing profession\, and yet their names are hardly recognised now by younger generations of music-lovers. Over My Shoulder sets out to remedy this by weaving together the lives of these two singers as an introduction to their music and artistry\, built around the unexpected intersection of their stories here in England. \nBoth Elisabeth and Jessie have rich personal stories as well as their musical careers. They experienced the ups and downs\, joys and challenges that the performing life unavoidably entails: there were romantic scandals\, tragedies\, falls from grace and triumphant come-backs. \nThe success of my first narrated recital Haydn’s London Ladies\, demonstrated how well-suited this style of speaking and singing is to combining a wide variety of musical items and historical anecdotes. Over My Shoulder includes music by Schubert to Rodgers & Hart\, taking us from Covent Garden to Hollywood and back via Richard Strauss\, Noël Coward and Otto Klemperer. \nThe first performance of Over My Shoulder was given at St Martin’s Church\, Ruislip on September 16th\, 2017\, in the presence of Elisabeth Schumann’s three grandchildren via her marriage to Walter Puritz. \nThe next performance will be at St Paul’s Church\, Wilton Place\, Knightsbridge on Thursday 15th February\, 2018 at 7.30pm. \nBook tickets or click here for more information.

SUMMARY:Bach\, the Universe & Everything – Seeing Life in a New Light
DESCRIPTION:Bach is often praised by scientists for the intricate structures and symmetries in his music. He wrote more than 200 cantatas\, a collection of vocal works which explore questions of faith\, time and eternity. Taking inspiration from Douglas Adams’ quote that ‘Bach tells you what it’s like to be the universe’\, this unusual series from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The Institute of Physics at Kings Place swaps metaphysics for physics to celebrate extraordinary universe and the music of Bach with some of Britain’s brightest scientists. \nThe next event (Sunday 18th February) features one of Bach’s most spine-tingling cantatas. Mixing joyful arias with funeral sounds\, it’s a rollercoaster journey through life and death. The OAE are joined by Professor Kishan Dholakia. A world expert in the physics of light\, he’s fascinated by how photonic imaging can unravel the mysteries of the brain. \nClick here for more information and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Materials Protecting the Environment Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The second event in the Materials Protecting Society (MPS) Seminar Series. Organised by the IOM3 Sustainable Development Group. \nThere is a real challenge for materials scientists and engineers to understand how their expertise and professional practises can affect environmental performance and contribute towards more sustainable outcomes. In many cases the apparent solutions to solving one environmental impact can increased impacts in another part of the product life cycle or perhaps in another impact category. So how can we make informed decisions in materials selection and new material developments to ensure that progress and solutions are heading in the right direction. \nThis event will set out the challenge and inform the debate on the following critical environmental topics facing society: \n\nClimate change: transport\, building and construction\nOcean health: challenge of plastics and marine biodiversity\nCircular economy: business innovation\, resource efficiency and recycling\n\nThe sessions will include Q&A and will encourage discussion and contributions from the delegates. We recognised that measures for improvement will need further debate and we welcome this to help support strategies on the best way forward. \nFull programme and registration details can be found here.

SUMMARY:500 years of medicine. The future: population and personalised healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Join the Royal College of Physicians for a special free lecture\, part of the season marking its 500th anniversary\, reflecting on the history and future of medicine\, society and health. \nIn this event\, Sir Muir Gray looks at the future of medicine in the context of an ageing population\, and examines the shift from a focus on life expectancy to healthy life expectancy. \nEach year billions of pounds are being spent on regenerative and curative medicine\, while the research-led hunt for an elixir of life continues. Yet a crucial question remains unanswered: \nDo people really want to live to be 120?   \nSir Muir will argue that all of us\, both healthcare providers and individuals\, have to be focussed on living better longer rather than simply living longer.  The evidence exists that we can do this\, but that we first have to understand what is happening inside us. \nRegister for this event via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity?
DESCRIPTION:AccessHE is pleased to open registration for the third event in the London Student Outcomes series – Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity?  \nSupported by the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) the event will be chaired by Dr Darryll Bravenboer\, Director of Apprenticeships and Skills at Middlesex University. \nAre Degree Apprenticeships the key to “smashing the Level 3 glass ceiling” of apprenticeships? Can they offer debt-free progression to higher level jobs for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and deliver a real widening of participation in higher education? Or should we be concerned about who might be missing from new uses of levy funds? This event will explore these questions and more by sharing emerging best practice in this area\, bringing together employers\, universities and other organisations to explore some of the key challenges and opportunities for promoting social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships in London. \nSpeakers \nWe look forward to welcoming Sarah-Louise Collins and Stella McKnight from the University of Winchester to present an update on their HEFCE Degree Apprenticeship Development Fundproject looking at enhancing social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships. Other speakers will be confirmed soon. \nAccessHE will present research on Degree Apprenticeship provision and uptake in London\, and there will also be an opportunity for discussions about the challenges facing the capital in trying to connect social mobility and Degree Apprenticeships together. \nWho should attend? \nWe anticipate attendees will include those in business development\, employer engagement\, student recruitment and widening participation within higher education institutions\, as well as employers and other organisations with an interest in this area. We hope the event will inform new collaborative work in 2018-19 to address Degree Apprenticeship opportunities in London. \nAttendance is FREE for AccessHE members and £25 for non-members. \nThis is the third event in the AccessHE London Student Outcomes series\, exploring four key emerging themes in widening participation across the full student lifecycle. The final event in the series will look at post-HE progression for learners from under-represented groups. Please visit the link above for more information and to register your interest in attending. \nIf you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact Sam Turner\, AccessHE London Programmes Coordinator\, at sam.turner@londonhigher.ac.uk. \nClick here to book for this event.

SUMMARY:500 years of medicine. The future: The end of AIDS is up to us
DESCRIPTION:Join the Royal College of Physicians for a special free lecture\, part of the season marking its 500th anniversary\, reflecting on the history and future of medicine\, society and health.\nIn this event\, Dr Nneka Nwokolo focuses on the advances made in the diagnosis\, prevention and treatment of HIV over recent years\, and how these major changes have not yet entered the public’s consciousness. \nToday\, people who receive effective treatment are not infectious and unable to pass the virus on to others\, including sexual partners and unborn babies. Meanwhile\, the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)\, medication taken by people at risk of catching HIV\, has had ground-breaking effects on transmission in many parts of the world. \nWhilst stigma and availability of services remain major issues\, the means are now in place to halt the spread of the virus and ensure that people with HIV have life expectancies comparable to the general population. \nDr Nneka Nwokolo is a consultant physician at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where she trained in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine. Her research interests include the prevention of HIV transmission\, and she has been involved in initiatives that have resulted in a significant reduction in HIV diagnoses in men who have sex with men in London. She is also interested in the sexual and reproductive health of women\, and particularly HIV positive women. She is a passionate advocate for women’s access to HIV prevention strategies including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). \nDr Nwokolo will argue that the end of AIDS could be within reach\, but success lies in our hands. \nProgramme \n6pm – Arrival refreshments (tea and coffee)\n6.30pm – Lecture starts\n7.30pm – Lecture finishes \nSpaces at this event and the others in the 500th series are strictly limited and we anticipate them booking out well in advance. \nRegister via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Public Commemoration and Women’s History
DESCRIPTION:How are women remembered\, commemorated and celebrated in public? How is this different from historical commemorations of men? What forms do these commemorations take? Why do public commemorations of women provoke such debate\, and what are the legacies of these public memorials? \nOur cities\, towns and streets are rich with memorials and monuments dedicated to the achievements and lives of men\, but women are significantly unrepresented in our public acts of commemoration. At this special panel discussion\, feminist activists and scholars will examine this significant ‘representation gap’ and debates around the place of women in public history and memory. \nWith \nCaroline Criado Perez\, activist and campaigner (Campaigns include: ‘Keep a Woman on English Banknotes’ and ‘Put a Statue of Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square’) \nDr Rebekah Higgitt\, university lecturer and member of the English Heritage Blue Plaques Panel \nSarah Jackson\, founder of the East End Women’s Museum \nProfessor Rebecca Surender\, Oxford University\, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Diversity and head of Oxford’s ‘Diversifying Portraiture’ campaign

SUMMARY:Real to Reel: The Craft Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Real to Reel\, the UK’s first film festival devoted to making\, returns to Picturehouse Central\, Piccadilly\, London\, this spring and promises to be one of the highlights of London Craft Week. The event\, produced by Crafts magazine and the Crafts Council\, runs over three evenings from 8-10 May. \nWhile nights one and two contain the event’s usual mixture of short documentaries on makers\, animations and music videos from around the world\, the third evening is devoted to a talk from Mackinnon & Saunders\, puppet maker extraordinaire\, whose credits include Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks\, Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie as well as Fantastic Mr Fox\, directed by Wes Anderson. The company has also worked on a string of children’s TV classics such as Bob the Builder\, Postman Pat and Rasta Mouse. \nThe event will include the premiere of the digitally remastered version of the Oscar nominated animation The Sandman. As Burton once said of them: ‘They do such beautiful work\, very sensitive and textural; you really do believe the characters are alive.’ It promises to be a must-see for fans of animation.\nMeanwhile highlights to look out for from the opening two nights include: \n\nMade In London: Chris Keenan. Directed by William Scothern\, the documentary is the story of how this brilliant potter went from being a jobbing actor into one of the most successful ceramists in the country via an apprenticeship with Edmund de Waal.\nAlan Kitching: A life in letterpress. A short film by Alice Masters that goes behind the scenes to explain the history and thinking of this legendary figure of British craft.\nOur Common Humanity. An insight into the work of the brilliant Costa Rican glass artist Juli Bolaños-Durman directed by Diego Almazan de Pablo and the maker herself.\nEdmond. The BAFTA-winning stop motion animation by Nina Gantz focusses on the life of a young man as he contemplates suicide. Surreal\, macabre and poignant in equal measure.\nMarble Machine. Created by Swedish folktronica band\, Wintergatan\, the music video features an instrument that might have been created by Heath Robinson and uses over 2000 marbles.\nKeith Harrison\, Joyride. A documentary directed by Stephen Gammond illustrates the making of the artist’s ambitious Jerwood Open Forest commission. His idea is to launch a ceramic replica of the last Rover 75 to leave Birmingham’s Longbridge car plant Evel Knievel-style off a timber ramp in Cannonck Chase Forest. But will it all go to plan?\n\nFor the first time the festival has a headline sponsor\, Killik & Co.\,an independently owned investment house.

SUMMARY:Placeless people: writing\, rights and refugees
DESCRIPTION:In 1944 the political philosopher and refugee\, Hannah Arendt wrote: ‘Everywhere the word “exile” which once had an undertone of almost sacred awe\, now provokes the idea of something simultaneously suspicious and unfortunate.’ Exiles from other places have often caused trouble for ideas about sovereignty and the law and nationhood. But the meanings of exile changed dramatically in the 20th century\, often leaving human rights law struggling to catch-up. This lecture discusses how writers such as Arendt\, Orwell\, Simone Weil\, Dorothy Thompson\, and Samuel Beckett responded to the mass displacements of the last century\, and anticipate many of the issues we confront today. Sceptical about the ability of human rights to legislate for refugees\, yet committed to universal justice\, these writers challenge us to imagine new terms for placelessness in modern times. Chaired by Professor Phillipe Sands\, QC at Matrix Chambers\, it features contributions from writer and broadcaster\, Professor Lyndsey Stonebridge. This event will be followed by a reception \nThis event is FREE but advance booking is required.

SUMMARY:Charles Dickens: Man of Science
DESCRIPTION:In 1839\, the writer and physiologist George Henry Lewes visited Charles Dickens at Doughty Street and examined his bookshelves. He left accusing Dickens of being ‘completely outside philosophy\, science\, and the higher literature’. For over 150 years\, it was thought that Charles Dickens was either not interested in science\, or was downright hostile to it. But Dickens’s science was not the science of books or learned institutions; for Dickens\, science mattered when it transformed lives by curing disease or cleaning streets\, or opening up new vistas of wonder in a humdrum world. \nCharles Dickens: Man of Science aims to reveal Dickens not only as a scientific enthusiast\, but as the key communicator of science in the Victorian age. Displaying his writings alongside artefacts\, instruments\, and texts of the developing sciences\, we share the story of Dickens’s friendships and scientific passions. Journeying through some of Dickens’s favourite sciences – geology\, thermodynamics\, chemistry\, and medicine – we reveal that what made him a great writer was precisely what made him a man of science. \nFind out more here

SUMMARY:Sea - Jodie Carey at the Foundling Museum
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by the Foundling Museum\, Jodie Carey has created three new site-responsive installations in response to the Foundling Hospital story. Displayed within the exhibition gallery and amongst the historic Collection\, these monumental pieces are imbued with a sense of remembrance and emotional trace. \nDrawing inspiration from the eighteenth-century fabric tokens left by mothers with their babies as a means of identification – one of the few tangible connections between mother and child – Sea is formed of hundreds of swatches of fabric that have been dipped in liquid clay and fired. These delicate ceramic fragments cover the exhibition gallery floor. Upstairs\, two monumental works cast in the earth explore ideas of memory and time. Eighteen life-size plaster sculptures crowd the Anteroom\, while in the Foyer a delicate and slender bronze sculpture stands floor to ceiling. \nCarey’s abstract and organic works seek to make visible the fragility of life and human relationships\, to acknowledge the absent presence of the thousands of children who passed through the Foundling Hospital\, and to reflect on the elemental drives at the heart of its story; love\, loss\, and survival. \nJoin the conversation #JodieCarey.

SUMMARY:Richard Woods - Upgrade
DESCRIPTION:On 1 June\, in a parking space in East London\, North London\, Richard Woods create Upgrade – a month-long site-specific installation that engages with issues of housing and urban regeneration. \nLike Wood’s contribution to the 2017 Folkestone Triennial\, Upgrade uses the form of a graphic three-dimensional caricature of a house to bring a fresh perspective to its urban location. \n\n‘I had been filling a skip with all the leftover material that we had used to build the Holiday Homes on the Folkestone Harbour Arm\, and it struck me how potent an image it made – having bits of window or chimney poking out of the skip. In the studio\, we chatted about whether it would be possible to expand the idea and make it into an object – and then out of the blue Lee emailed and introduced the project. We quickly realised we’d both had the same idea. It was the easiest pitch I have ever had to make…’
