SUMMARY:Remembering the Kindertransport: 80 Years On
DESCRIPTION:“What is my key message to future generations? Tolerance.”\n– Elsa Shamash\, Kindertransport refugee \nTo mark the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport\, discover the stories of six of the Kinder (child refugees) in their own words. \nIn 1938-39 the British government allowed 10\,000 Jewish and other ‘non-Aryan’ children from occupied Europe to come to Britain. This remarkable rescue operation became known as the Kindertransport. Now in their 80s and 90s\, the Kinder have given their testimony through the medium of film. You can also see personal objects and artefacts that they brought with them from their homelands. \nAs children they escaped violence and persecution\, but went through painful separations\, and their integration into British society was not always straightforward. This exhibition tells the story of rescue as well as stories of rupture\, loss and regret. \nThe Jewish Museum also has an extensive programme of talks\, lates and family events relating to this exhibition which can be found here.

From strategy to practical actions around air quality\, procurement\, waste and energy management join us to hear from local leading organisations and experts to make a change in your institutions… \nThe Roundtable will open with a introduction by Gemma George\, Lead Sustainability Consultant at the Camden Climate Change Alliance\, a unique sustainability network and consultancy in the borough of Camden offering support to businesses\, third sector and schools. \nAn experienced environmental and qualified energy assessor\, Gemma has worked in the sector for over 13 years both within organisations and as an external advisor. This includes previously leading the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) Wales steering group as Chair. \nCommitted to helping businesses become more sustainable whilst harnessing its benefits\, Gemma has expertise across a number of areas including contract and data management\, procurement\, waste\, energy\, CSR and air quality. They are gifts from one family to another. \nSpeak Street is a pop-up language café and a positive response to negativity towards immigrants in the UK. They offer free English language clasess to immigrants\, migrants and asylum seekers. \nYour first donation is your £10 ticket\, 100% of this will be given to non-profits pitching on the night. SUMMARY:ThUNDDAR & IGT Networks Speed Dating event - The Institute of Physics
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Physics are bringing people together to solve some problems via creative thinking in a sandpit/speed-dating style session.  \nParticipants will not need prior knowledge of the problem area to participate\, but must demonstrate an enthusiasm for working at the interface between disciplines. It will be an excellent opportunity to identify unique collaborative projects in multidisciplinary groups formed of clinicians\, engineers and basic scientists. \nRegistration deadline: 27 September 2018. Register here. \nAbout the day: \nPresentations: \nThe half-day event will focus on how engineering and physical sciences (EPS) innovation can help improve patient care and will begin with presentations by clinicians. Each clinician will describe one critical clinical challenge they are facing within their field. Each presentation will give an overview of current treatments and the limitations in current state-of-the-art technology which\, if improved\, could lead to better patient care. \nNetworking session: \nFollowing on from the presentations\, participants in the room will have the opportunity to speak to each clinician to discuss how they might contribute the project. Participants will rotate every ten minutes between each presenting clinician. \nProposals: \nAt the end of the rotation participants will join a group and then work together to produce an outline project proposal.  Each team will develop a short-term objective and a long-term vision around their chosen challenge\, which will be captured in a 1-page proposal and 5-minute oral presentation – their “pitch”. Assessment criteria will be provided on the day. \nEach group will then present their pitch to the judging panel. Funding will be allocated by a panel of experts in clinical and engineering/physical sciences research and potentially a representative from the EPSRC. The pump priming funding should be used to support the project at an early stage and help produce high quality publishable pilot data to enable a future funding application. \nUp to three groups will be awarded up to £50k for a project over 6 months which will contribute toward RA Salary and travel/subsistence. A small amount of funding (no more than £5K) may be used on consumables/equipment. Each Network together with the National Physical Laboratories (NPL) will contribute £50K. \nOrganised by the IOP Physical Acoustics Group\nSponsored by the EPSRC Therapy Ultrasound Network for Drug Delivery & Ablation Research (ThUNDDAR) and the EPSRC Image-Guided Therapies UK (IGT) Network+.

DESCRIPTION:The Foundling Museum present a landmark exhibition highlighting the hidden stories of women in the Foundling Hospital’s history.\nMarking 100 years of female suffrage\, Ladies of Quality & Distinction resets the focus of the Foundling Hospital story\, revealing portraits and stories of the remarkable women who supported both the establishment and the running of London’s Foundling Hospital. Despite its male face\, women permeate every aspect of the Hospital story; as mothers\, supporters\, wet nurses\, staff\, apprentice masters\, artists\, musicians\, craftsmen and foundlings. Yet for almost 300 years\, history has placed these women as a footnote to the story. \nThis exhibition brings these overlooked stories to the fore. Discover portraits of the ‘ladies of quality and distinction’ who in 1735 signed Thomas Coram’s original petition to King George II calling for the establishment of the Foundling Hospital. Displayed together for the first time\, these paintings replace the portraits of male governors in the Picture Gallery. \nDownstairs in the exhibition gallery\, the lives of the women who supported the day-to-day running of the institution are brought to life. Highlights include Mrs Prudence West\, a female inspector and the only woman to run a branch Hospital; Miss Eleanor Barnes\, one of the earliest female Governors; and Mrs Elizabeth Leicester\, an early matron of the Foundling Hospital who oversaw some of its most challenging years.

DESCRIPTION:“Is there not a much better thing for women than to be ‘medical men’ and that is to be medical women? Has not the cart been put before the horse in this women’s medical movement?” \n Florence Nightingale\, 1871\n\nWhen thinking of female doctors\, most people’s minds turn to 19th century pioneers such as Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. This view\, however\, masks a much longer and richer story of women in medicine stretching back through time. \nFemale apothecaries\, herbalists\, writers of medicinal recipes\, midwives – and of course doctors – have all worked within a male-dominated world for many centuries. Yet their roles have often been purposely obscured and frequently provoked fierce debate. \nThis September England and Wales’ oldest royal medical college\, the Royal College of Physicians\, marks its 500th anniversary with a major new exhibition that confounds prevailing notions of female participation in the medical professions and wider society. ‘This vexed question’: 500 years of women in medicine runs from 19 September 2018 to 18 January 2019. \nTaking its title from the comments of a progressive Victorian male medical student who lamented the physical violence with which some of his peers reacted to the ‘vexed question’ of women training to be doctors\, the exhibition explores the intriguing stories\, and battles\, of famous and forgotten female figures from more than half a millennium of medical practice. Highlights of the exhibition include: Britain’s first female doctors?\, Women persecuted for practising medicine and Midwives and apothecaries. \nAs well as a whole range of events including walking tours\, exhibition tours and a public programme.

DESCRIPTION:A three-day conference at the newly opened Aga Khan Centre in Kings Cross will explore the diverse and pluralistic nature of Muslim cultures in the Indian Ocean. SUMMARY:The Women Question - Camden Tour Guides and Camden Vox
DESCRIPTION:2018 marks the centenary of some women gaining the right to vote in parliamentary elections for the first time. This walk from Goodge Street to Marchmont Street will introduce you to a few of the pioneering women and men who played their parts in advancing this and other causes and who lent their voices to great debates.\n\n\n\nThis free walk is part of the Camden Vox programme and will be led by Camden tour guides Amanda McKerracher and Jo Wilkinson from the Camden Tour Guides Association (a Knowledge Quarter Partner). \nWalk with them and meet\, among others\, a mother and daughter whose remarkable lives gave us two of the most famous pieces of writing of the 18th and 19th centuries\, advocates and activists both for and against women’s suffrage and a woman born into slavery who overcame appalling suffering to live by her own rules. There will be medical trail blazers\, writers\, philanthropists\, an artist\, the first black woman to sit in the Cabinet of the United Kingdom\, not forgetting the one woman who isn’t there. We will delve into these inspiring lives and will also touch upon the significant ideas and debates that were part of the “Woman Question” that has cast its shadow across the years. \nThe walk will start at Goodge Street underground station and will end in Marchmont Street\, near Russell Square Station\, lasting about 1.5 hours. \nBook places here.

SUMMARY:Silicon Quantum Information Processing 2018
DESCRIPTION:Silicon Quantum Information Processing (SiQIP) is highly appealing due to long electron and nuclear spin lifetimes and the expertise of the integrated circuit industry in device scaling. Recent demonstrations of long-lived\, high-fidelity silicon qubits\, multi-qubit gates and spin–photon coupling\, are promising for scalable QIP architectures. Further requirements are robust and scalable fabrication processes\, fast control and data processing\, and schemes to correct errors and protect against decoherence. \nThis meeting will bring together leading researchers from the silicon QIP community who are interested in meeting these challenges. \nTopics of interest include: \n\nSilicon nanodevices and qubit implementations\nQubits and nanodevices based on semiconductor-superconductor hybrids\nCircuit quantum electrodynamics interfaced with spins in semiconductors\nScalable architectures and fabrication processes\nDigital-quantum interfaces for control\, readout and fast data processing of multi-qubit circuits\nImproving immunity to environmental noise

SUMMARY:Michael Price – Tender Symmetry
DESCRIPTION:Emmy Award-winning composer Michael Price gives the world premiere of Tender Symmetry\, written in response to and recorded within six differing but equally awe-inspiring National Trust sites across the length and breadth of England. It will be performed by an ensemble of strings\, voices\, keyboards and tape alongside other much loved works from Price’s repertoire. \nThe new work being premiered is Tender Symmetry\, Michael Price’s second album with Erased Tapes which was released on 31 August\, 2018. The ambitious musical project takes in a series of iconic National Trust locations across England as its inspiration\, turning them into unlikely recording spaces. Michael and a host of musicians and collaborators — including soprano Grace Davidson (featured on Max Richter’s Sleep) and Shards (the choir on Nils Frahm’s All Melody) — travelled across the country in pursuit of places far removed from the traditional recording studio to create seven unique and moving pieces\, straddling the past and the future.
