SUMMARY:KQ Private View | Charles Dickens Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join the Knowledge Quarter for our last free morning private view of 2025 at the Charles Dickens Museum\n  \nAbout the Charles Dickens Museum\nSituated at 48 Doughty Street\, this beautifully restored Georgian townhouse was once home to Charles Dickens\, his wife Catherine\, and their young family. \nIt was here that Dickens completed The Pickwick Papers\, wrote Nicholas Nickleby\, and created one of his most famous works\, Oliver Twist – the stories that would make him a household name and win the admiration of Queen Victoria herself. \nToday\, the museum is arranged as though Dickens had just stepped out\, with intimate rooms filled with his own furnishings\, portraits\, and treasures. Step back into 1837 and experience the atmosphere of a bustling Victorian home\, lit with warmth and history – a world that inspired A Christmas Carol and the timeless spirit of generosity and joy it celebrates. \nEvent Details \n\nDate: Tuesday\, 9th December\, 2025\nTime: 08:30 AM – 10:00 AM\nLocation: 48 Doughty Street\, London\, WC1N 2LX\n\nIf you have any queries\, please contact events@knowledgequarter.london. \nRSVP here\nIf you are registering under the ‘KQ Member’ ticket type\, please ensure you RSVP with your staff email.

These texts preserved knowledge about herbs\, spices\, and plants\, providing insights into early forms of pharmacy and healthcare. \nAccessibility\nThe exhibition is located on the first floor gallery of the RCP building\, which has accessible lifts to all levels and toilets on the Lower Ground floor. Guide and hearing dogs are welcome. There is limited car parking spaces available for disabled visitors only\, please contact the RCP to book these in advance. SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Observatory at Central Saint Martins for London Design Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join the Knowledge Quarter for a tour and private view of Observatory\, Central Saint Martins’ 2024 London Design Festival exhibition which celebrates interdependence in creative practice — much like the Knowledge Quarter\, where cross-disciplinary thinking joins up. \nSign up to the private view here.\n  \nThis KQ CONNECT event will feature an exclusive tour and Q&A at 08:45 with the exhibition team. We will be hosted by co-curators Teleri Lloyd-Jones and Kate Keara Pelen\, along with Amar Sall\, exhibition designer. Breakfast will be provided. As with all our private views\, you’re welcome to turn up at any time between 08:30 and 10:00. \nAbout the exhibition\nWelcome to Observatory; we invite you to look and look again. \nOur 2024 London Design Festival exhibition celebrates interdependence in creative practice. We’ll be exploring the orbits and constellations that spread out of creative practice and creative education: an interdependent network of people\, moments\, spaces\, resources and skills – much like the Knowledge Quarter\, where cross-disciplinary thinking joins up. \nEach exhibit brings with it a story of iteration\, exploration and conversation. Our Observatory invites you to look closer\, to examine creativity as a process and to witness transformation. Across art\, design and performance\, work by students and staff demonstrates creativity as a connector: of people\, places and ideas. \nProjects featured include ReRoasted\, a project working with Origin roasters at the British Library\, demonstrating the re-use of spent coffee grounds in ceramic-making and a proposal to challenge our relationship to ‘waste’. Other work addresses cultural permanence for marginalised and migrant communities; and western influence on Artificial Intelligence\, leading to flaws in translating nuanced subject matter and raising questions of trust. \nStep inside and connect with the life and work of Central Saint Martins. \nFind out more about the exhibition here. \nWhat is KQ CONNECT?\nKQ CONNECT is our networking event series that brings KQ colleagues together across our diverse range of partner institutions. Join us for a series of private views of exhibitions and summer walking tours of our vibrant local area. SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Milk at the Wellcome Collection
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \n  \nJoin the KQ for a private view and curator tour of the Wellcome Collection’s exhibition ‘Milk’\, exploring how milk became central to perceptions of nutrition and “good health” in the UK. Places are strictly limited. Please see the ‘Agenda’ section on the Eventbrite page for more information. \n‘Milk‘ asks: Why has cow’s milk been considered essential to a good diet in the UK? What forces shape the ways we feed our babies? How has milk been used to tie ideas of health to whiteness? The choices we make about milk are personal. But it is also a highly politicised liquid that has been used to exert power as well as provide care. \nThe exhibition brings together over 100 objects\, including items used in farming and infant feeding\, historical advertising\, public health posters\, and contemporary artworks. \n‘Milk’ includes new artistic commissions by Danielle Dean\, Jess Dobkin and Ilana Harris-Babou\, as well as a new documentary by Leo Hallam Dawson on UK dairy farming\, and a 2023 iteration of Melanie Jackson and Esther Leslie’s project ‘Deeper in the Pyramid’. \n‘Milk’ is curated by Honor Beddard and Marianne Templeton. \nACCESSIBILITY \nA digital exhibition guide\, with audio description\, British Sign Language and captions and transcripts is available to use on your own phone or device here. You can access the guide using QR codes in the gallery\, and there is a tactile line on the gallery floor to guide you between stops. \nThese downloadable documents contain information to help you plan and prepare for your visit: \nVisual story \nSensory map of the exhibition gallery \nIf you have any further accessibility questions and/or requirements\, please get in touch with Jemima Barnes (jemima.barnes@bl.uk). \n  \nImage credit: Milk\, 2010\, Lucy + Jorge Orta\, Reproduced with permission of Lucy + Jorge Orta. Rode across the sky on a flying chariot. And descended to the bottom of the sea in a glass bell. \nOr did he? \nPiece together an epic tale 2\,000 years in the telling. From astrological clay tablets\, ancient papyri\, and medieval manuscripts\, to Hollywood and Bollywood movies and cutting-edge videogames\, our major exhibition crosses continents to explore the fantastical stories that turned legacy into legend. \nPharaoh\, prophet\, philosopher. European\, Middle Eastern and Asian cultures have all moulded Alexander into the fictional hero they want him to be. And today artists and storytellers alike are still trying to reimagine the man and his myth. Who was he really? You’ll have to decide for yourself… \n  \nThe exhibition space has limited capacity\, so please register via the eventbrite link. This is a free private view and drinks reception open to Knowledge Quarter members only. \nN.B. the Library has a no food or drink policy for the actual exhibition space.

SUMMARY:KQ Private View: The Eye As Witness\, Recording the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Please book via Eventbrite here. \nDiscover how images shape the way we remember history with The Eye As Witness – a major exhibition using creative technology to contrast Holocaust photos taken by perpetrators with the perspective of victims. \nThe Eye as Witness is an immersive multimedia experience examining Holocaust photography. It has been designed to make us question the motives behind the recording of historical events and to encourage critical thinking on racism\, hatred and ‘fake news’ today. \nTaking the instantly recognisable Nazi-propaganda images of sub-human victims in Nazi ghettos and concentration camps\, visitors are led to reconsider the images as persecuted and dignified humans living ‘everyday’ lives only days before the Nazis came to power. \nFeatured in the exhibition is an award-winning immersive virtual reality (VR) experience. This cutting-edge experience enabled visitors to enter a virtual environment and ‘step into’ a Nazi-produced Holocaust photograph taken in the Warsaw Ghetto.

SUMMARY:KQ Private View: The World of Stonehenge
DESCRIPTION:Book via Eventbrite here.\n\nJoin the KQ for this in person Private View\, in collaboration with the British Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformed by ground-breaking recent archaeological and scientific discoveries\, this landmark exhibition offers new insight on one of the world’s great wonders\, bringing the true story of Stonehenge into sharper focus than ever before. \nIn this special private view of their blockbuster exhibition\, the British Museum will reveal the secrets of Stonehenge\, shining a light on its purpose\, cultural power and the people that created it. \nFollowing the story of Britain and Europe from 4000 to 1000 BC\, you’ll learn about the restless and highly connected age of Stonehenge – a period of immense transformation and radical ideas that changed society forever. \nThe human story behind the stones reveals itself through a variety of fascinating objects. Among these are stone axes from the North Italian Alps\, stunning gold jewellery and astonishing examples of early metalwork including the Nebra Sky Disc – the world’s oldest surviving map of the stars. A remarkably preserved 4\,000-year-old timber circle dubbed Seahenge also takes centre stage in the show\, on loan for the very first time. All these objects offer important clues about the beliefs\, rituals\, and complex worldview of Neolithic people\, helping to build a vivid sense of life for Europe’s earliest ancestors. \nAbout The British Museum \nThe British Museum was founded in 1753 and opened its doors in 1759. It was the first national museum to cover all fields of human knowledge\, open to visitors from across the world. \nEnlightenment ideals and values – critical scrutiny of all assumptions\, open debate\, scientific research\, progress and tolerance – have marked the Museum since its foundation. \nThe Museum is driven by an insatiable curiosity for the world\, a deep belief in objects as reliable witnesses and documents of human history\, sound research\, as well as the desire to expand and share knowledge. \n\n\nOur Private Views:  \nThis KQ’s Private View will take place in person at the British Museum. Once you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive instructions to find the venue by email 48 hrs before the event. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with Mia (mia.johnson@bl.uk) \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? SUMMARY:KQ Private View: This Fascist Life
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \n\n\n\nJoin the KQ for this In-Person Private View\, in collaboration with the The Wiener Holocaust Library. \nIn the years after the First World War\, fascist political parties\, militia and movements emerged across Europe. United by ultra-nationalist ideas and similarities of style and action\, these movements shaped\, and in some places remade\, politics and society. They mobilised on the streets to attack their opponents and to support the accession to power of fascist parties in countries such as Italy\, Germany\, and Austria. Later\, they helped to enable German occupations and the Nazis’ policies of persecution and genocide across Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nDrawing upon The Wiener Holocaust Library’s unique archival collections\, as well as the expertise of an international group of specialists in interwar fascism\, this exhibition focuses on the experiences of the rank-and-file members of fascist movements in the interwar period. It explores the world of the young and socially diverse fascist activists and examines their motivations and activities. \nPhoto credit © Wiener Holocaust Library Collections \n\nAbout KQ Private Views: \nStaff and friends of the Knowledge Quarter and its 100+ partner organisations get free\, out-of-hours access to some of the best exhibitions in London. \nOur series of exclusive Private Views has opened the doors (before they open to the public) of the British Museum\, The Francis Crick Institute and the Wellcome Collection. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Joy and Tranquillity
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nThis Summer\, the Wellcome Collection launches On Happiness\, a season of free events\, activities and two exhibitions – Joy and Tranquillity – which bring together voices from across the cultural\, scientific and spiritual fields to reflect on the elusive subject of happiness. In this period of great instability\, escalating infectious diseases\, ecological concerns and rising levels of anxiety and depression worldwide\, Wellcome Collection examines the ways in which people find resilience\, hope and even joy at times of duress. In response to seismic political and social upheavals On Happiness asks; how might we rebuild happiness for our current times? \nJoin Wellcome Collection curators Laurie Britton Newell and George Vasey for this exclusive Virtual Private View of the joint exhibitions Joy and Tranquillity which consider different routes to experiencing these positive feelings. From the uplifting sensations of dancing and laughter to the calm of being in nature and diary writing\, the exhibitions consider the effects of emotion on our self and others. \nFrom serenity to ecstasy\, awe to comfort\, happiness encompasses many different feelings\, and has perplexed scholars for centuries. There has long been debate around the role of emotions\, where they come from and how they are expressed\, and whether they are innate or acquired\, universal or culturally specific. Reflecting on the connections between these complex emotions\, our bodies and health\, On Happiness offers audiences an opportunity to rethink how we feel good. \nNewly commissioned works and multi-sensory installations by contemporary artists including Jasleen Kaur\, Chrystel Lebas\, Harold Offeh\, Amalia Pica\, Stefanie Posavec and David Shrigley are on display alongside historic objects dating back to the 14th century from Wellcome’s collection. The exhibitions consider ideas from different schools of thought including neuroscience\, religion and psychotherapy offering a range of perspectives on the connections between emotions and health. \nImage credit: Joy Inside Our Tears\, 2021\, ©  Harold Offeh.\nProduction stills. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Aby Warburg’s Bilderatlas Mnemosyne
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nJoin the Director of the Warburg Institute\, Professor Bill Sherman\, and archivist Claudia Wedepohl\, in this exclusive showcase of the final and most unconventional project of Warburg’s lifetime. This Virtual Private View will bring together two exhibitions of Aby Warburg’s legendary Bilderatlas Mnemosyne\, revealing Warburg’s revolutionary understanding of art and cultural theory. \nFor the first time since 1929\, all 63 panels of Aby Warburg’s renowned Bilderatlas Mnemosyne have been reconstructed using Warburg’s original materials for display at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In a simultaneous exhibition at the Gemäldegalerie you can see some 50 original artworks in the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin chosen by Warburg for inclusion in his encyclopedic atlas of images. These two very special exhibitions\, taking place in Germany\, present the collection as close to the original as we will ever get to see in our lifetimes. \nIn collaboration with the Warburg Institute\, University of London\, the curators located most of the 971 illustrations from the 400\,000 objects in the Institute’s Photographic Collection and Library to display Warburg’s unfinished magnum opus in its entirety for the first time since his death. \nBill Sherman is the director of the Warburg Institute and professor in the History of the Book and Techniques of Scholarship. Sherman was founding director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the University of York\, and he moved to the Warburg from the Victoria and Albert Museum\, where he served as Director of Research and Collections and head of the V&A Research Institute (VARI). \nClaudia Wedepohl is the Archivist of the Warburg Institute. She has studied Art History and Italian Literature in Göttingen and Hamburg\, and joined the staff of the Warburg Institute in 2000. She held fellowships at the Center for Literary and Cultural Research in Berlin and at the Center for Advanced Studies\, Morphomata\, at the University of Cologne (2010-11). \nAbout the Warburg Institute:  \nFounded by Aby Warburg in Hamburg at the end of the nineteenth century and exiled from Germany in 1933\, the Warburg Institute attracted the greatest humanist scholars and philosophers of the time. The Warburg Institute quickly became one of the leading centres in Germany for the understanding of the interactions between images and society across time and space.  It transformed the histories of art\, literature\, and music\, and in emphasizing fields such as astrology and magic\, anticipated many of the developments in the modern understanding of the history of science. \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Black Monuments Matter
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets via Eventbrite here. \n\nBlack Monuments Matter: A Virtual Exhibition of Sub-Saharan Architecture\n \nBlack Monuments Matter recognises and highlights African contributions to world history by exhibiting World Heritage Monuments and architectural treasures from Sub-Saharan Africa. In doing so\, this exhibition sweeps away ideas based on racist theories and hopes to contribute to both awareness of African identity and pride of African Heritage. \n \nSites and monuments are physical representations of histories\, heritage\, and developments in society. This exhibition aims to display the diversity and richness of African cultures as part of world history through the study of African Monuments; bringing awareness and pride of African roots and contributions to other cultures.\n \nAfrican cultures suffered extensively from slavery from the 16th to the 19th Century\, and during the acceleration of European colonisation through the 19th and early 20th Century. Black Monuments Matter aspires to create links to living African heritage by making it visible\, assessable\, and known to as many people as possible.\n \nMany of Africa’s monuments are protected by UNESCO and have been given world heritage status. They are also protected and supported by national heritage authorities and by the support of international organisations such as the World Monument Fund and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.\n \nThrough an approach founded on the latest knowledge and technology\, this special private view event will offer Knowledge Quarter staff an opportunity to learn more about the glorious monuments and sites of African heritage and black cultures across Sub Saharan Africa.\n \nPresented in partnership with the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations at the Aga Khan University in London\, and the Zamani Project at the University of Cape Town.

SUMMARY:The Second Pandemic: Misinformation and Perception
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are available through via Eventbrite here. \nWhat happens to our perception of truth during a pandemic? What happens in our brains that makes us more susceptible to believing and spreading false information in times of crisis? Mixing storytelling and science\, Christopher Bailey\, Arts and Health Lead at the World Health Organization\, will draw on real life examples\, taken from pandemics and wars\, to explore how rumours and false narratives proliferate in a crisis. In telling these stories\, Bailey\, an actor and playwright from New York\, strips away the layers of our psychology to reveal what makes us fearful\, impressionable and fundamentally human. \nMisinformation and fake news is also linked to the rise of “fake medicines” claiming to cure COVID-19. Christopher Bailey’s performance will be followed by a panel discussion including Founder of UCL Fight the Fakes\, Oksana Pyzik\, and Professor Robert Horne of UCL School of Pharmacy to further explore this growing global health threat and its’ psychological underpinnings. The panel will be moderated by Bhavit Mehta of the Knowledge Quarter and will feature a guest appearance from the WHO’s Special Envoy for COVID-19 David Nabarro. \n“When facing the unknown we often tell a story to help make sense of what we are experiencing\, even\, and sometime especially\, if few facts are available.” ~ Christopher Bailey \nThe WHO’s Arts and Health program explores the evidence base for the health benefits of the arts\, and the practical implementation of arts-based approaches to improve health at the local level. \nJoin this moving\, entertaining and informative event brought to you by the Knowledge Quarter\, in partnership with UCL School of Pharmacy and the World Health Organization. \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Childhood in Dickensian London
DESCRIPTION:While we have to take a break from our in-person private views\, we are working with curators to bring the KQ’s cultural offering to the digital realm! Join us at 2pm on Monday 8 June for an online experience brought to you by the University of London’s Senate House Library. \nWith 2020 marking the 150th anniversary of Charles Dickens’s death\, Senate House Library’s exhibition takes you on a journey through Victorian London from the 1830s until the turn of the 20th century\, exploring the role of Dickens in creating a better childhood for us all. Included in the virtual private view are some first edition copies of Dickens’s most-loved novels\, examples of his journalism\, and some intricate drawings and sketches of Dickens and the characters he created\, all of which are from Senate House Library’s collections. These are complemented by some of Dickens’s personal items\, on loan from another KQ member\, The Charles Dickens Museum in London. \nThe private view will be talked through by the curator of the exhibition and will be followed by a brief Q&A. \n\nTickets available through Eventbrite here.\nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private virtual views?
