We will be hosted by co-curators Teleri Lloyd-Jones and Kate Keara Pelen\, along with Amar Sall\, exhibition designer. Breakfast will be provided. As with all our private views\, you’re welcome to turn up at any time between 08:30 and 10:00. \nAbout the exhibition\nWelcome to Observatory; we invite you to look and look again. \nOur 2024 London Design Festival exhibition celebrates interdependence in creative practice. We’ll be exploring the orbits and constellations that spread out of creative practice and creative education: an interdependent network of people\, moments\, spaces\, resources and skills – much like the Knowledge Quarter\, where cross-disciplinary thinking joins up.⁠ ⁠ \nEach exhibit brings with it a story of iteration\, exploration and conversation. Our Observatory invites you to look closer\, to examine creativity as a process and to witness transformation. Across art\, design and performance\, work by students and staff demonstrates creativity as a connector: of people\, places and ideas. \nProjects featured include ReRoasted\, a project working with Origin roasters at the British Library\, demonstrating the re-use of spent coffee grounds in ceramic-making and a proposal to challenge our relationship to ‘waste’. DESCRIPTION:Booking via Eventbrite\, click here. \nJoin the KQ for this private view and guided tour of ‘Fortitude‘ at the Royal College of Physicians. Places are strictly limited\, so book early to avoid disappointment. \n‘The pandemic really brought out the good in people\, it seemed to illuminate our strengths and fortitude in the face of an ever-evolving virus.’ – RM\, clinical microbiology fellow\, north-west England \nIn January 2021 the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) museum created a survey to collect and record the experiences of RCP members and other healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic. From trainee doctors and consultants to GPs and physician associates\, survey respondents from over 20 medical specialties and professions described how their lives were transformed. With their permission\, the RCP is privileged to share their experiences\, in their own words. \nThese stories may be challenging to read and hear. They are honest and speak of suffering\, chaos and exhaustion. They are also inspiring\, filled with compassion\, courage and joy. Some stories may contradict our own understanding of the pandemic\, and others caution and urge us to learn from these experiences. \nThe objects\, images\, written accounts and recordings in the exhibition were donated to the RCP via the survey\, and the quotes are taken directly from donations. Please note: This exhibition contains images\, descriptions and audio recordings relating to illness\, death\, grief and trauma. \n‘I hope that the sharing of our experiences can help people to glean some further understanding and show some greater compassion for all those that have toiled\, sacrificed and suffered in the last few years … Though it may be difficult and they may want to turn away\, I hope they don’t so we can all build a deeper understanding of what so many like me have experienced in the healthcare profession.’ – YT\, palliative medicine ST5 (specialty training year 5)\, London. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe RCP building has a lift at the main entrance and accessible lifts within the building\, the exhibition is on the lower ground floor. There are accessible toilets on the lower ground and ground floors. Car parking is available but must be booked in advance. \nGuide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome. \nFor those with noise sensitivity\, the exhibition space is in an open space\, with other events being held in the building. Whilst the timing of this private view means the building will be a little quieter\, there may be background noise that may affect attendees. SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Japanese Aesthetics of Recycling at SOAS
DESCRIPTION:Join the KQ for this collaborative private view of the ‘Japanese Aesthetics of Recycling’ exhibition at the Brunei Gallery\, with talks from our partners at SOAS and Cockpit. \nExhibiting over 100 objects from the Karun Thakar Collection\, the exhibition includes exquisite examples of ‘Boro’ and ‘sakiori’ textiles\, washi and kin-tsugi or gin-tsugi pottery. \nBoro (Japanese: ぼろ) is a class of Japanese textiles that have been mended or patched together. The term is derived from Japanese boroboro\, meaning something tattered or repaired. Fashioned from worn clothing and ‘waste’ fabric to create ‘Boro’\, the textile pieces have become very popular with collectors in Japan & throughout the world over the last 20 years. These pieces are often marketed as ‘abstract art’ in the Western context. They are in fact an important aspect of Japanese history and culture\, showing the resilience and creativity shown by working people living in very harsh environment with very few resources. \nTo give insight into artistic recycling practices with textiles today\, this event will include a talk from award-winning textile artist\, Alice Burnhope\, based at Cockpit Studios. Alice specialises in socially-engaged artwork\, co-creating immersive installations and sculptural wearable art with the public to support their wellbeing and connection to nature. Alice’s practice is based in sustainable textile techniques\, such as utilising waste materials\, natural dyes and patchwork. \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe public entrance to the Brunei Gallery is located opposite the main SOAS campus. The gallery is fully wheelchair accessible with a ramp to the right of the entrance. \nWheelchairs are available to borrow on site\, our team are happy to assist when requested. \nThe Brunei Gallery has several spaces on three different levels\, the ground floor\, upper galleries lower galleries. DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \n  \nJoin the KQ for a private view and curator tour of the Wellcome Collection’s exhibition ‘Milk’\, exploring how milk became central to perceptions of nutrition and “good health” in the UK. Places are strictly limited. Please see the ‘Agenda’ section on the Eventbrite page for more information. \n‘Milk‘ asks: Why has cow’s milk been considered essential to a good diet in the UK? What forces shape the ways we feed our babies? How has milk been used to tie ideas of health to whiteness? The choices we make about milk are personal. But it is also a highly politicised liquid that has been used to exert power as well as provide care. \nThe exhibition brings together over 100 objects\, including items used in farming and infant feeding\, historical advertising\, public health posters\, and contemporary artworks. \n‘Milk’ includes new artistic commissions by Danielle Dean\, Jess Dobkin and Ilana Harris-Babou\, as well as a new documentary by Leo Hallam Dawson on UK dairy farming\, and a 2023 iteration of Melanie Jackson and Esther Leslie’s project ‘Deeper in the Pyramid’. \n‘Milk’ is curated by Honor Beddard and Marianne Templeton. \nACCESSIBILITY \nA digital exhibition guide\, with audio description\, British Sign Language and captions and transcripts is available to use on your own phone or device here. DESCRIPTION:‘Unforgotten Lives’ presents the stories of Londoners of African\, Caribbean\, Asian and Indigenous heritage who lived and worked in the city between 1560 and 1860 and are recorded in London’s archives. This exclusive morning private view of the exhibition will feature a 20 minute talk with the archivists at the LMA\, revealing the multi-layered stories of love\, enterprise\, wealth and family life; discrimination\, hardship\, resilience and resistance. \nThe exhibition is informed by an ongoing research project which aims to reveal London’s complex and long-standing diversity presenting evidence of community in documents created nearly 500 years ago.
