SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of 'A Silk Road Oasis' at the British Library
DESCRIPTION:Join the KQ for a private curator talk about the British Library’s current exhibition A Silk Road Oasis: Life in Ancient Dunhuang. \nSign up to the private view here.\n  \nWith the world’s earliest complete printed book with a date to the earliest known manuscript atlas of the night sky\, we will travel back in time to more than 1\,000 years ago to discover the stories of diverse Dunhuang and its people. \nLike the Knowledge Quarter\, Dunhuang hosted a melting pot of multiple languages\, faiths and cultures and facilitated the free exchange of ideas\, technologies and art. \nThis KQ CONNECT event features an exclusive talk led by Kitty Liu\, the exhibition’s project curator. The talk will begin at 08:45. There will be time before and after to enjoy the exhibit and mingle with fellow KQ community members. \nMore about the exhibition\nThe oasis of Dunhuang\, at the edge of the Gobi Desert\, was once a bustling town on the famous Silk Road connecting China and the Mediterranean. Discover the personal stories of those who lived\, travelled through\, worked\, and worshipped here more than 1\,000 years ago. Explore an astonishing time capsule that opens windows onto the intimate worlds of artists and scribes\, merchants and fortune-tellers\, diplomats\, Buddhists and nuns. \nNamed “Blazing Beacon” after the watchtowers along its walls\, Dunhuang was once a vital meeting point at the gateway to China. The routes that converged here ran through Constantinople in the West and Japan in the East. But there was more to this verdant oasis than trade. For over 1\,000 years\, Dunhuang was also an important pilgrimage site\, a cultural melting pot where ideas\, technologies and art flowed freely. \nThis exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the ordinary lives of people long ago through the remarkable contents of the Library Cave\, part of the Buddhist cave complex of Mogao\, where a wealth of manuscripts\, documents and artworks remained sealed for nearly 900 years. Detailing life in and around Dunhuang during the first millennium CE\, the documents include personal letters and wills encompassing multiple languages\, faiths and cultures including Buddhism\, Zoroastrianism\, Manichaeism and Christianity; and span topics as diverse as literature\, astronomy\, medicine\, politics and art. \nRead more about the exhibition here. \nAbout the curator (and our guide)\nKitty Liu joined the Library as project curator for the exhibition A Silk Road Oasis: Life in Ancient Dunhuang. With a lifelong passion for museums and cultural heritage\, Kitty specializes in the preservation and study of ancient Chinese architecture. She began her career as a heritage consultant before spending five years curating exhibitions and managing collections in museum settings\, honing her skills in presenting cultural treasures to the public. \nWhat is KQ CONNECT?\nKQ CONNECT is our networking event series that brings KQ colleagues together across our diverse range of partner institutions. Our Observatory invites you to look closer\, to examine creativity as a process and to witness transformation. Across art\, design and performance\, work by students and staff demonstrates creativity as a connector: of people\, places and ideas. \nProjects featured include ReRoasted\, a project working with Origin roasters at the British Library\, demonstrating the re-use of spent coffee grounds in ceramic-making and a proposal to challenge our relationship to ‘waste’. Other work addresses cultural permanence for marginalised and migrant communities; and western influence on Artificial Intelligence\, leading to flaws in translating nuanced subject matter and raising questions of trust. \nStep inside and connect with the life and work of Central Saint Martins. \nFind out more about the exhibition here. \nWhat is KQ CONNECT?\nKQ CONNECT is our networking event series that brings KQ colleagues together across our diverse range of partner institutions. Join us for a series of private views of exhibitions and summer walking tours of our vibrant local area. Immerse yourself in a world of creativity\, connect with like-minded individuals\, and discover hidden gems across the Knowledge Quarter. \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Fortitude at the Royal College of Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Booking via Eventbrite\, click here. \nJoin the KQ for this private view and guided tour of ‘Fortitude‘ at the Royal College of Physicians. Places are strictly limited\, so book early to avoid disappointment. \n‘The pandemic really brought out the good in people\, it seemed to illuminate our strengths and fortitude in the face of an ever-evolving virus.’ – RM\, clinical microbiology fellow\, north-west England \nIn January 2021 the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) museum created a survey to collect and record the experiences of RCP members and other healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic. From trainee doctors and consultants to GPs and physician associates\, survey respondents from over 20 medical specialties and professions described how their lives were transformed. With their permission\, the RCP is privileged to share their experiences\, in their own words. \nThese stories may be challenging to read and hear. They are honest and speak of suffering\, chaos and exhaustion. They are also inspiring\, filled with compassion\, courage and joy. Some stories may contradict our own understanding of the pandemic\, and others caution and urge us to learn from these experiences. \nThe objects\, images\, written accounts and recordings in the exhibition were donated to the RCP via the survey\, and the quotes are taken directly from donations. Please note: This exhibition contains images\, descriptions and audio recordings relating to illness\, death\, grief and trauma. \n‘I hope that the sharing of our experiences can help people to glean some further understanding and show some greater compassion for all those that have toiled\, sacrificed and suffered in the last few years … Though it may be difficult and they may want to turn away\, I hope they don’t so we can all build a deeper understanding of what so many like me have experienced in the healthcare profession.’ – YT\, palliative medicine ST5 (specialty training year 5)\, London. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe RCP building has a lift at the main entrance and accessible lifts within the building\, the exhibition is on the lower ground floor. There are accessible toilets on the lower ground and ground floors. Car parking is available but must be booked in advance. \nGuide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome. \nFor those with noise sensitivity\, the exhibition space is in an open space\, with other events being held in the building. Whilst the timing of this private view means the building will be a little quieter\, there may be background noise that may affect attendees. There are spaces for quiet reflection as part of this exhibition and if you have any questions about finding a quiet space\, please direct these to our Events Manager\, Jemima. \nThe RCP’s accessibility pages provide further information about the building\, please click here. If you have any further accessibility questions and/or requirements\, please get in touch with Jemima Barnes (jemima.barnes@bl.uk).

SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Japanese Aesthetics of Recycling at SOAS
DESCRIPTION:Join the KQ for this collaborative private view of the ‘Japanese Aesthetics of Recycling’ exhibition at the Brunei Gallery\, with talks from our partners at SOAS and Cockpit. \nExhibiting over 100 objects from the Karun Thakar Collection\, the exhibition includes exquisite examples of ‘Boro’ and ‘sakiori’ textiles\, washi and kin-tsugi or gin-tsugi pottery. \nBoro (Japanese: ぼろ) is a class of Japanese textiles that have been mended or patched together. The term is derived from Japanese boroboro\, meaning something tattered or repaired. Fashioned from worn clothing and ‘waste’ fabric to create ‘Boro’\, the textile pieces have become very popular with collectors in Japan & throughout the world over the last 20 years. These pieces are often marketed as ‘abstract art’ in the Western context. They are in fact an important aspect of Japanese history and culture\, showing the resilience and creativity shown by working people living in very harsh environment with very few resources. \nTo give insight into artistic recycling practices with textiles today\, this event will include a talk from award-winning textile artist\, Alice Burnhope\, based at Cockpit Studios. Alice specialises in socially-engaged artwork\, co-creating immersive installations and sculptural wearable art with the public to support their wellbeing and connection to nature. Alice’s practice is based in sustainable textile techniques\, such as utilising waste materials\, natural dyes and patchwork. \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe public entrance to the Brunei Gallery is located opposite the main SOAS campus. The gallery is fully wheelchair accessible with a ramp to the right of the entrance. \nWheelchairs are available to borrow on site\, our team are happy to assist when requested. \nThe Brunei Gallery has several spaces on three different levels\, the ground floor\, upper galleries lower galleries. The Lower and upper galleries are accessible by stairs and a lift. \nThere is a wheelchair accessible toilet within the gallery\, located at the back of the Foyle Gallery on the ground floor. \nLarger text \nA larger format of the text panels is available on request through the gallery on gallery@soas.ac.uk or via the reception desk. \nIf you have any further accessibility questions and/or requirements\, please get in touch with Jemima Barnes (jemima.barnes@bl.uk).

SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of Milk at the Wellcome Collection
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets through Eventbrite here. \n  \nJoin the KQ for a private view and curator tour of the Wellcome Collection’s exhibition ‘Milk’\, exploring how milk became central to perceptions of nutrition and “good health” in the UK. Places are strictly limited. Please see the ‘Agenda’ section on the Eventbrite page for more information. \n‘Milk‘ asks: Why has cow’s milk been considered essential to a good diet in the UK? What forces shape the ways we feed our babies? How has milk been used to tie ideas of health to whiteness? The choices we make about milk are personal. But it is also a highly politicised liquid that has been used to exert power as well as provide care. \nThe exhibition brings together over 100 objects\, including items used in farming and infant feeding\, historical advertising\, public health posters\, and contemporary artworks. \n‘Milk’ includes new artistic commissions by Danielle Dean\, Jess Dobkin and Ilana Harris-Babou\, as well as a new documentary by Leo Hallam Dawson on UK dairy farming\, and a 2023 iteration of Melanie Jackson and Esther Leslie’s project ‘Deeper in the Pyramid’. \n‘Milk’ is curated by Honor Beddard and Marianne Templeton. \nACCESSIBILITY \nA digital exhibition guide\, with audio description\, British Sign Language and captions and transcripts is available to use on your own phone or device here. You can access the guide using QR codes in the gallery\, and there is a tactile line on the gallery floor to guide you between stops. \nThese downloadable documents contain information to help you plan and prepare for your visit: \nVisual story \nSensory map of the exhibition gallery \nIf you have any further accessibility questions and/or requirements\, please get in touch with Jemima Barnes (jemima.barnes@bl.uk). \n  \nImage credit: Milk\, 2010\, Lucy + Jorge Orta\, Reproduced with permission of Lucy + Jorge Orta.
