DESCRIPTION:Sign up via Eventbrite here \nExtraordinary Stories from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology \nThis Virtual Private View\, brought to you by the UCL Petrie Museum\, will launch the Museum’s brand new entrance gallery and tell the story of the cast of characters who were influential in creating the museum including: \nAmelia Edwards\, Victorian writer and journalist who donated her collections and library along with funding to establish the first Chair in Egyptology in the UK\, choosing UCL because it was the only university at the time to offer degrees to women.  \nAli Suefi\, the head-overseer of many teams of Egyptian ‘Quftis’ working to excavate Egyptian archaeological sites for Western researchers. \nViolette LaFleur\, UCL conservation student and volunteer\, who almost single-handedly saved the collection from the World War Two bombs that destroyed her own home. \nAnd of course\, William Matthew Flinders Petrie; pioneer archaeologist and ‘father of pots’\, with a complex legacy of eugenics research. \nJoin the curator\, Dr Anna Garnett\, and head of collection\, Catriona Wilson\, in this behind-the-scenes look at the Museum and the untold stories behind its formation\, as well an exclusive preview of the hidden love story behind a newly acquired Pre-Raphaelite pencil sketch on display for the first time. \nAbout the Petrie Museum: \nFree to visit\, the Petrie Museum is home to one of the most significant collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology in the world. This extraordinary collection tells the stories of the lives of ordinary people who lived along the Nile Valley thousands of years ago. Inside you’ll find papyrus and stone fragments inscribed with hieroglyphs; musical instruments and children’s toys; thousands of beads and amulets; ancient mummy cases and the treasures buried with them for the afterlife; and the oldest woven garment in the world: the Tarkhan Dress. \nIt is named after William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942)\, appointed in 1892 as first UCL Edwards Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology. DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets via Eventbrite here. \nThe Great Train Robbery: Crime & The Post \nThis exclusive private view event will offer Knowledge Quarter staff an opportunity to explore one of the most audacious crimes of the 20th Century and the subsequent investigation\, alongside other stories of crime through the post. \nRevisit The Great Train Robbery and unearth the role of the Post Office’s own investigation department in piecing together this and other crimes\, shedding light on the human stories of the victims through never before seen artefacts\, objects and personal accounts. \nThe Great Train Robbery: Crime and the Post has been two years in the making and uncovers over 150 objects\, recordings and films\, some of which are displayed for the very first time.\nThe exhibition traces the history of the Post Office Investigation Branch\, the oldest criminal investigation service in the world\, established in 1683. The most high-profile crime investigated by the Investigation Branch is perhaps the most notorious crime in British history: The Great Train Robbery.\nThe exhibition tell the story of the robbery through its victims’ witness statements and trace the efforts made by the Investigation Branch to identify those involved and find the money. The exhibition asks visitors to question the enduring legacy of the crime: why is the public so fascinated by criminal activity and why have the criminals themselves been elevated to cult status?\nThis Private View is presented in partnership with The Postal Museum. In doing so\, this exhibition sweeps away ideas based on racist theories and hopes to contribute to both awareness of African identity and pride of African Heritage. \n \nSites and monuments are physical representations of histories\, heritage\, and developments in society. This exhibition aims to display the diversity and richness of African cultures as part of world history through the study of African Monuments; bringing awareness and pride of African roots and contributions to other cultures.\n \nAfrican cultures suffered extensively from slavery from the 16th to the 19th Century\, and during the acceleration of European colonisation through the 19th and early 20th Century. Black Monuments Matter aspires to create links to living African heritage by making it visible\, assessable\, and known to as many people as possible.\n \nMany of Africa’s monuments are protected by UNESCO and have been given world heritage status. They are also protected and supported by national heritage authorities and by the support of international organisations such as the World Monument Fund and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.\n \nThrough an approach founded on the latest knowledge and technology\, this special private view event will offer Knowledge Quarter staff an opportunity to learn more about the glorious monuments and sites of African heritage and black cultures across Sub Saharan Africa.\n \nPresented in partnership with the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations at the Aga Khan University in London\, and the Zamani Project at the University of Cape Town.

SUMMARY:KQ Network Event: Preparing for a second outbreak with local hospitals
DESCRIPTION:Please email the Knowledge Quarter team to register your interest in attending this event. \nThe Knowledge Quarter’s Supply Chain network will hear from two hospital trusts in our geography\, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (St Pancras hospital)\, about their logistical preparations for another outbreak in coronavirus cases. \nDuring the spring\, many Knowledge Quarter partners mobilized resources at a local level to support hospitals and hospital staff battling a surge in coronavirus cases. Our partners freed up parking spaces\, supplied personal protective equipment and even developed COVID-19 testing pipelines. \nThis virtual session will consolidate the lessons from the spring\, and add further resilience to future planning in the event of another significant outbreak of cases. By the end of the session partners will have a clear idea of what resources they can offer in support of the hospitals\, and of how\, as a network\, we can be responsive and innovative to the demands of the situation. \nThe Knowledge Quarter Supply Chain network is made up of professionals working in logistics\, procurement\, estates\, facilities\, waste and sustainability. SUMMARY:The Second Pandemic: Misinformation and Perception
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are available through via Eventbrite here. \nWhat happens to our perception of truth during a pandemic? What happens in our brains that makes us more susceptible to believing and spreading false information in times of crisis? Mixing storytelling and science\, Christopher Bailey\, Arts and Health Lead at the World Health Organization\, will draw on real life examples\, taken from pandemics and wars\, to explore how rumours and false narratives proliferate in a crisis. In telling these stories\, Bailey\, an actor and playwright from New York\, strips away the layers of our psychology to reveal what makes us fearful\, impressionable and fundamentally human. \nMisinformation and fake news is also linked to the rise of “fake medicines” claiming to cure COVID-19. Christopher Bailey’s performance will be followed by a panel discussion including Founder of UCL Fight the Fakes\, Oksana Pyzik\, and Professor Robert Horne of UCL School of Pharmacy to further explore this growing global health threat and its’ psychological underpinnings. This virtual walk led by three Islington guides links these partners and tells some fascinating stories of this historic and varied corner of London. \nCoaching inns\, pleasure gardens\, spas\, elegant city squares and a turbulent history – the Angel and Clerkenwell have had them all. We want to show how this area grew from the fields beneath our streets into the creative\, media and information hub that it is today. \nYour guides want to present an intimate view of the history and heritage of the Angel and Clerkenwell and to relate the great stories of the area which connect us with the past. \n This event is part of Knowledge Quarter Walking Tours\, a series of guided rambles around the KQ curated exclusively for KQ staff\, friends and family. It is being presented in partnership with the Camden Tour Guides Association and Islington Guides Association. \n\nYour guides: \nOonagh Gay guides in Islington and Camden and across London. She has a specialist interest in women’s history and politics. She spent her working career in the House of Commons Library. She is currently chair of the Islington Guides Association\, a member of Footprints of London Guided Walks and a volunteer at Islington Museum. \nRichard Cohen has lived and worked in London throughout his life. Richard has guided across the city for many years. He is a lifelong lover and teacher of History. He is passionate about the social and political history of London and the story of the lives of Londoners over the centuries. He wants to share his passion for London with you. Richard’s walks are fun and informative and present an intimate view of London’s history and heritage.  \nDaniel Hausherr is an Islington and Camden tour guide. He currently works at the National Portrait Gallery where he is PA to the Chief Operating Office and administers the Inspiring People Project. Daniel has worked in most of London’s major galleries including the British Museum\, National Gallery\, Science Museum\, V&A as well as Knowledge Quarter partners the Craft Council and the Francis Crick Institute. Originally from NY Daniel moved to London in the 1980s. \n\nAbout KQ Walking Tours: \nIn the pre-covid days\, the Knowledge Quarter Walking Tours were a series of guided rambles around the Knowledge Quarter curated exclusively for Knowledge Quarter staff\, friends and family. Now we’re moving them to the digital realsm. While we have to take a break from our in-person private views\, we are working with curators to bring the KQ’s cultural offering to the digital realm! Join us at 3pm on Wednesday 06 May for an online experience brought to you by SOAS’ Brunei Gallery. \nThe exhibition\, Embodied Liberation\, will lead the audience through different chronological periods of yoga’s history using a variety of visual and interactive mediums which derive from the diverse methodological approaches used by the research team. Handwritten Sanskrit manuscripts\, which are fascinating samples of the principal textual discoveries of the project\, will be on display. A vivid Mughal painting of pre-modern asceticism will be contrasted with photographs and video material sourced during extensive ethnographic fieldwork of present-day ascetic practitioners in India\, including very rare examples of female practitioners. \n  \nThis event will be presented by the curators of the exhibition\, Daniela Bevilacqua and Jacqueline Hargreaves. \nAbout Daniela Bevilacqua: Daniela is a South-Asianist who uses ethnographic and historical methodologies to dig into religious issues of Indian culture. She received her PhD in Civilizations of Africa and Asia from Sapienza University of Rome. She is now a Post-Doc Research Fellow at SOAS\, working for the ERC funded Hatha Yoga Project. Her role in the project is to collect\, through fieldwork\, historical evidence of yoga practice and ethnographic data among living ascetic practitioners of yoga. \nAbout Jacqueline Hargreaves: Jacqueline is an Engineer and Yoga Teacher who researches how historical yoga practices are applied in the modern world. She is the curator of the ‘Embodied Liberation’ exhibition at the Brunei Gallery. Jacqueline is a founding member of the Journal of Yoga Studies\, a peer-reviewed academic journal\, and the founder of The Luminescent\, an independent open-access educational platform for the scholarly study of yoga.  \n\n  \nOur Virtual Events:  \nThe KQ’s virtual events will take place via Zoom. A good network of this kind can radically improve the working-day experiences for LGBTQ + employees\, and create a better workplace culture for everyone within the organisation. \nMany Knowledge Quarter partners have an LGBTQ+ network of some kind\, and we’re delighted to invite colleagues who are involved in these networks to join us to share their experiences and challenges. Together\, we will hear from Stonewall and the Met Police about the setting up of such networks and will be asking: How can organisations continue to support our LGBTQ+ staff? New date to be announced in the future. \nThere is nothing new in the seemingly recent calls for the repatriation and restitution of museum objects to former colonial countries. Whilst inaction may seem like the norm\, museums\, heritage organisations and governments are opening up the conversation around co-curation and decolonising the collections they hold. \nThis event will help to demystify the questions we have around colonial objects and artefacts such as: Where do we start with decolonising our collections? Is sending stuff back really the answer? How can decolonising rewrite the damaging narratives that have been told\, whilst owning up to the mistakes of the past? How do you make a history not Colonial? Should we continue to hold on to objects (and hence their narrative) in the 21st century? Who\, ultimately\, should be making the decisions when dealing with problematic collections? \nFollowing on from our 2019 conference\, this event will provide a forum in which people from across the KQ\, who are working on or interested in learning more about museum and gallery collections\, can learn and discuss more about the challenges and opportunities of a decolonising them. DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter staff and friends are welcome to join our private evening view of Writing in Times of Conflict at Univeristy of London’s Senate House Library. Enjoy privileged out-of-hours access to the exhibition in the company of lovely\, like-minded individuals living and working in the Knowledge Quarter. \nThe exhibition begins in 1919 just after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles marked the formal end of the First World War\, which led to the establishment of contemporary peace movements. It explores some of the most significant military\, environmental and economic conflicts that ensued right up until 2019\, touching on current political issues such as Brexit\, economic inequality\, and climate change. \nThere are many bold stories by well-known writers on display. These include one of the first editions of John Maynard Keynes’ The Economic Consequences of the Peace\, a rare signed copy of in our time by Ernest Hemingway\, a letter from Virginia Woolf describing the WWII bombers flying overhead\, and a first edition of Carol Ann Duffy’s thought-provoking play My Country: a Work in Progress. These are complemented by unique photographs and documents\, such as one of the few surviving photostatic copies of the ‘Nazi Black Book’ written in 1940\, listing peace activists and politicians to be targeted by the Gestapo. \nTold through Senate House Library’s global collections\, Writing in Times of Conflict combines a selection of narratives by writers\, journalists\, politicians and local communities from Africa\, Latin America and Europe. \nBook your tickets here

SUMMARY:Data Diversity in Research: A call to action for concrete solutions
DESCRIPTION:The data gap issue is not new\, as Caroline Criado Perez demonstrated in her recent book\, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ – from stab vests to medical trials – the “one-size-fits-men” approach puts lives at risk. \nIn a recent blog\, BenevolentAI described how in 1992 the dosage for insomnia medication Zolpidem was based on research made up of predominantly male test subjects. It was only after 700 reports of impaired driving and road accidents that dosage for women was reconsidered. Equally\, diversity from an ethnic perspective is underrepresented. In 2014\, 86% of the clinical trials participants are white according to a study published in Nature. This means that patients may experience different side-effects or may fail to respond to treatments altogether. \nA huge part of the population is still left out of research\, yet\, we are living in an age of great innovation. New technologies are empowering scientists and researchers with previously unimaginable capabilities\, enabling greater discoveries.
