The exhibition documents an overland journey photographer Christopher Wilton-Steer undertook in 2019 following the historic trade route. \nThe show aims to celebrate the diversity of cultural expressions found along the route\, highlight examples of how historical practices\, rituals and customs live on today\, and also reveal some of the connections between what appear at first glance to be very different cultures. It also seeks to engender interest and understanding between distant cultures and challenge perceptions of less well known and understood parts of the world. Photographs from Iran\, Turkmenistan\, Uzbekistan\, Tajikistan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Pakistan\, India\, China and elsewhere will feature. Additionally\, the exhibition aims to raise awareness about AKDN’s contributions to improving the quality of life across social\, economic and cultural spheres in Central and South Asia as well as the Middle East. \nChristopher Wilton-Steer is a travel photographer and Head of Communications at Aga Khan Foundation UK. His professional and personal work take him to remote locations across Africa\, Asia and the Middle East. Through his photography\, he is interested in exploring less well documented and often misunderstood parts of the world in an effort to help demystify them and build bridges of interest and understanding between different cultures. Each monologue explores the characters experience of living in a world which has been changed by the Covid 19 pandemic\, capturing their thoughts and feelings about taking part in Covid 19 treatment and vaccine trials. \nThese films are fictional pieces of storytelling drama funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)\, in partnership with Leeds University. \nJoin this special\, theatrical\, event where we’ll be seeing some of the monologues performed live\, and will hear more about the project. The event will be of particular interest to parents\, teachers\, community educators and anyone working in data research\, clinical trials and public health. \nProf Sue Pavitt specialises in clinical trial research and at the University of Leeds. She is passionate about encouraging research inclusivity and works with and for underserved communities to tackle health inequality and literacy. As a Project Lead at the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)\, she is a Co Executive Producer of the Covid and Me project. \nSudha Bhuchar is an award-winning actor/playwright. TV and film credits include Coronation street\, Stella\, Mary Poppins Returns and Mogul Mowgli. Writing credits include Child of the Divide (Winner Asian Media Awards 2018)\, My Name is…. (which she also adapted for Radio 4) and Touchstone Tales\, a Revoluton Arts/Wellcome Collection commission. Sudha is one of the playwrights who created the 13 monologues in this project. \nShaheen Khan is an actor/co-writer whose career spans over 40 years in film\, TV\, stage\, radio\, audiobooks and voice overs. Her film work includes Bhaji on the Beach and Bend it Like Beckham. Theatre credits include Midnights Children (RSC) and Rafta Rafta (National Theatre). She won The Asian Women of Achievement Award for Arts and Culture in 2006. Shaheen will do a live reading of one of the monologues during the event. \nOladipo Agboluaje has written several original plays\, adaptations\, and radio plays. He has been writer in residence at Soho Theatre and the National Theatre. He is Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the University of East London and Assistant General Secretary of the African Theatre Association. In this Virtual Private View of Julian Claxton’s photography\, Age UK Camden will share an intimate and unseen side to the pandemic. \nAge UK Camden organised and launched an initial response to the COVID 19 crisis on Friday 13th March 2020\, providing emergency food parcels via donations. When national lockdown was announced in late March there was an inevitable surge in demand for support\, and clients were becoming increasingly distressed. \nAge UK received over 7000 referrals and delivered over 20\,000 bags of food throughout the borough. \nThe narrative and images in the exhibition focus on the local people who made this response possible; including those from Age UK who put themselves at risk every day for the good of others\, to source and pack essential provisions for those who were unable to get food for themselves\, the delivery drivers and those making regular phone calls and caring for older people shielding at home. \n‘We are very proud to display these achievements through a gallery of such impactful imagery.’ Nikki Morris\, CEO Age UK Camden. \nPhotographer Julian Claxton has held numerous exhibitions\, been featured nationally & internationally in print and won numerous awards\, including the 2015 Travel Media Awards for documentary images of children in rural Uganda\, the 2016 Event Photography Awards for ‘Election day’ documentary and reached the final of the 2013 National Geographic competition. This Virtual Private View will bring together two exhibitions of Aby Warburg’s legendary Bilderatlas Mnemosyne\, revealing Warburg’s revolutionary understanding of art and cultural theory. \nFor the first time since 1929\, all 63 panels of Aby Warburg’s renowned Bilderatlas Mnemosyne have been reconstructed using Warburg’s original materials for display at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In a simultaneous exhibition at the Gemäldegalerie you can see some 50 original artworks in the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin chosen by Warburg for inclusion in his encyclopedic atlas of images. These two very special exhibitions\, taking place in Germany\, present the collection as close to the original as we will ever get to see in our lifetimes. \nIn collaboration with the Warburg Institute\, University of London\, the curators located most of the 971 illustrations from the 400\,000 objects in the Institute’s Photographic Collection and Library to display Warburg’s unfinished magnum opus in its entirety for the first time since his death. \nBill Sherman is the director of the Warburg Institute and professor in the History of the Book and Techniques of Scholarship. Sherman was founding director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the University of York\, and he moved to the Warburg from the Victoria and Albert Museum\, where he served as Director of Research and Collections and head of the V&A Research Institute (VARI). \nClaudia Wedepohl is the Archivist of the Warburg Institute. She has studied Art History and Italian Literature in Göttingen and Hamburg\, and joined the staff of the Warburg Institute in 2000. Handwritten Sanskrit manuscripts\, which are fascinating samples of the principal textual discoveries of the project\, will be on display. A vivid Mughal painting of pre-modern asceticism will be contrasted with photographs and video material sourced during extensive ethnographic fieldwork of present-day ascetic practitioners in India\, including very rare examples of female practitioners. \n  \nThis event will be presented by the curators of the exhibition\, Daniela Bevilacqua and Jacqueline Hargreaves. \nAbout Daniela Bevilacqua: Daniela is a South-Asianist who uses ethnographic and historical methodologies to dig into religious issues of Indian culture. She received her PhD in Civilizations of Africa and Asia from Sapienza University of Rome. She is now a Post-Doc Research Fellow at SOAS\, working for the ERC funded Hatha Yoga Project. Her role in the project is to collect\, through fieldwork\, historical evidence of yoga practice and ethnographic data among living ascetic practitioners of yoga. \nAbout Jacqueline Hargreaves: Jacqueline is an Engineer and Yoga Teacher who researches how historical yoga practices are applied in the modern world. She is the curator of the ‘Embodied Liberation’ exhibition at the Brunei Gallery.
