As the built environment expands and London works towards net zero\, emissions and air pollution from construction continue to increase\, with significant consequences for local people. \n​This event challenges the narrative of growth. What if growth meant repairing instead of replacing\, working with what we already have\, and putting communities at the centre of change? \n​We’ll explore how retrofitting\, low-carbon design\, and care-centred planning can drive both climate action and social equity. These solutions aren’t without challenges; retrofitting complex buildings\, shifting mindsets\, and meaningfully involving communities in technical processes\, demand time\, trust\, and collaboration. The building is the UK home for three organisations founded by His Late Highness Aga Khan IV\, the hereditary spiritual leader of the Shi‘a Ismaili Muslims. \n​The building was designed by Fumihiko Maki\, one of Japan’s most distinguished contemporary architects. The talk will begin at 08:45. There will be time before and after to enjoy the exhibit and mingle with fellow KQ community members. \nMore about the exhibition\nThe oasis of Dunhuang\, at the edge of the Gobi Desert\, was once a bustling town on the famous Silk Road connecting China and the Mediterranean. Discover the personal stories of those who lived\, travelled through\, worked\, and worshipped here more than 1\,000 years ago. Explore an astonishing time capsule that opens windows onto the intimate worlds of artists and scribes\, merchants and fortune-tellers\, diplomats\, Buddhists and nuns. \nNamed “Blazing Beacon” after the watchtowers along its walls\, Dunhuang was once a vital meeting point at the gateway to China. The routes that converged here ran through Constantinople in the West and Japan in the East. But there was more to this verdant oasis than trade. For over 1\,000 years\, Dunhuang was also an important pilgrimage site\, a cultural melting pot where ideas\, technologies and art flowed freely. \nThis exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the ordinary lives of people long ago through the remarkable contents of the Library Cave\, part of the Buddhist cave complex of Mogao\, where a wealth of manuscripts\, documents and artworks remained sealed for nearly 900 years. DESCRIPTION:Booking via Eventbrite\, click here. \nJoin the KQ for this private view and guided tour of ‘Fortitude‘ at the Royal College of Physicians. Places are strictly limited\, so book early to avoid disappointment. \n‘The pandemic really brought out the good in people\, it seemed to illuminate our strengths and fortitude in the face of an ever-evolving virus.’ – RM\, clinical microbiology fellow\, north-west England \nIn January 2021 the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) museum created a survey to collect and record the experiences of RCP members and other healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic. From trainee doctors and consultants to GPs and physician associates\, survey respondents from over 20 medical specialties and professions described how their lives were transformed. With their permission\, the RCP is privileged to share their experiences\, in their own words. \nThese stories may be challenging to read and hear. They are honest and speak of suffering\, chaos and exhaustion. They are also inspiring\, filled with compassion\, courage and joy. Some stories may contradict our own understanding of the pandemic\, and others caution and urge us to learn from these experiences. \nThe objects\, images\, written accounts and recordings in the exhibition were donated to the RCP via the survey\, and the quotes are taken directly from donations. Please note: This exhibition contains images\, descriptions and audio recordings relating to illness\, death\, grief and trauma. \n‘I hope that the sharing of our experiences can help people to glean some further understanding and show some greater compassion for all those that have toiled\, sacrificed and suffered in the last few years … Though it may be difficult and they may want to turn away\, I hope they don’t so we can all build a deeper understanding of what so many like me have experienced in the healthcare profession.’ – YT\, palliative medicine ST5 (specialty training year 5)\, London. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe RCP building has a lift at the main entrance and accessible lifts within the building\, the exhibition is on the lower ground floor. There will be hot drinks\, pastries and presentations from leading scientist and Crick researcher Güneş Taylor and the Creative Producer of the exhibition\, Ruth Garde. \nCut + Paste will explore the ethical issues surrounding genome editing and its potential applications\, inviting visitors to reflect on questions including:\n● Should genome editing be used to avoid or treat ‘severe’ conditions? If so\, who gets to decide which conditions are ‘severe’?\n● If genome editing in plants or animals could help to reduce hunger\, malnutrition or climate change\, would you support it?\n● Should genome editing be used to create human ‘enhancements’? How can ‘enhancement’ be defined?\n● Genome editing has the power to shape the future. Whose vision of the future should it be? \nThrough a series of hands-on activities created by The Liminal Space\, visitors to one of Europe’s largest biomedical research institutes will be given a glimpse of future science and society. Visitors will be encouraged to share their thoughts and reflect on how scientific tools might be used in different scenarios\, today and in years to come. \nThe exhibition will take place within sight of laboratories where researchers are already using genome editing technologies every day to study health and disease\, including fertility\, brain development\, cancer\, tuberculosis\, malaria\, COVID-19\, and many more topics. \nGenome editing is when scientists make changes to DNA\, a long molecule that carries genetic information and the instructions for constructing and operating a living organism. Editing DNA helps scientists understand the role of different genes and has already been proved to be a useful tool\, for example\, it has led to new treatments for certain conditions and the creation of disease-resistant crops. \nOver recent years\, new genome editing tools have been developed which allow scientists to alter DNA more quickly\, easily and accurately. These technologies hold vast potential to improve human health and the world around us\, but they also come with all sorts of ethical questions. \nRobin Lovell-Badge\, principal group leader at the Crick and international expert on genome editing says\, “As technology and science progresses\, things that were previously impossible or in the realm of science-fiction\, are now reality. But important questions remain about how comfortable we are as a society for genome editing to be used and where the line should be drawn. Rode across the sky on a flying chariot. And descended to the bottom of the sea in a glass bell. \nOr did he? \nPiece together an epic tale 2\,000 years in the telling. From astrological clay tablets\, ancient papyri\, and medieval manuscripts\, to Hollywood and Bollywood movies and cutting-edge videogames\, our major exhibition crosses continents to explore the fantastical stories that turned legacy into legend. \nPharaoh\, prophet\, philosopher. European\, Middle Eastern and Asian cultures have all moulded Alexander into the fictional hero they want him to be. And today artists and storytellers alike are still trying to reimagine the man and his myth. Who was he really? SUMMARY:KQ Private View: Magnificent Maps of London
DESCRIPTION:Magnificent Maps of London brings together some of the best-known records of the capital. Following an extensive program of conservation treatment\, Civitas Londinium\, the first surviving map of the city is on display at London Metropolitan Archives for the first time. \nThis very rare opportunity to see one of only three known copies of the map will transport visitors to the streets (and fields) of Tudor London. The exhibition will also include work by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg\, John Rocque\, John Ogilby and William Morgan\, Richard Horwood\, and Christopher and John Greenwood. \nThe exhibition tour begins at 9am and is a KQ member only event. SUMMARY:Craft School: A Summer of Playful Making
DESCRIPTION:Craft School: A summer of playful making\, is a chance for children and young\npeople to get making and be inspired by the Crafts Council Collection and\nbrilliant creations made by school students from across the UK. \nThis summer the Crafts Council Gallery will become a hive of activity where\nvisitors can create\, play\, and experiment with clays\, textiles\, paper\, and card at a\n‘making table’ and meet others who also love craft. There will be a free weekly\nworkshop held every Wednesday in August\, led by our friendly staff and skilled\ncraft educators. \nCraft School will display six winning entries from our national school’s competition\nCraft School: Yinka’s Challenge\, developed in collaboration with multi-\ndisciplinary British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori. Learners from across KS1 – KS4 were\ninvited to explore themes of play\, storytelling\, and empowerment through\nmaking. \nOut of the 100 entries that were submitted\, the judging panel selected six winners\nof the challenge including: the students of the lower primary class at Richard\nCloudesley Special School in Islington who were inspired by upcycling projects\nby Yinka Ilori to create a mobile using decorated old CDs for their classroom: and\nDiane Mwamikazi\, a key stage 4 student at Bury College who created a colourful\nand richly patterned miniature pavilion inspired by the clothing of her Congolese\nand Rwandan family members. Collectively\, these works celebrate making by\nyoung people and explore how craft can be a place for young makers to develop\nand reflect on their histories\, cultures\, and identities. \nAlongside these schools’ projects\, visitors will be able to handle and experience\ncraft by leading professional makers from our Collections. Each of these objects\nexplore ideas of materiality and play and include Colour Breeze#1 by\nmischer’traxler studio\, a 3-metre-long installation of paper-like circles which light\nup in a vibrant display of colours once visitors interact with them: leather bottles\nmoulded on to found objects by Simon Hasan: and wooden objects by Howard\nRaybould who was the head prop maker on the iconic film 2001: A Space\nOdyssey. \nThe Crafts Council believe that every child and young person has the right to\nexplore their own creativity through making. Making with their hands helps young\npeople to develop problem-solving and communication skills alongside practical \n̺ \nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England.\nskills of creating\, mending\, and repairing. Craft de-stresses\, empowers\, and\ncontributes to wellbeing and happiness. \nAs craft education is in steep decline in UK schools\, we have developed a teaching\nand learning framework ‘Make First’ which is driven by learners’ own interests.\nMake First encourages getting craft materials into students’ hands allowing for\nopen-ended and instinctive making through material exploration and\ndevelopment. Craft School is an opportunity for parents\, caregivers\, and teachers\nto connect with the Crafts Council. \nCraft School is the perfect place for families\, children\, and young people to\ndiscover more about craft\, have a go themselves and start their own journey to\nbecoming a maker in a friendly and inclusive space. \nCraft School is part of the Crafts Council’s Make! DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to all\, but please register via the Eventbrite link to receive the Microsoft Teams link. \nJoin us for a mid-week mindfulness session; a mid-week lift\, coming together to renew our wellbeing for the rest of the week. \nIn this online session Lisa will lead us through a mindfulness and breathing activity that in just 20 minutes will revitalise us and put us in the best frame of mind to meet the rest of the week. \nThe session will begin with a guided meditation practice\, watching the breath\, observing sensation and bringing mindful attention to our experience in the present moment. This session is accessible for all\, if you have never practiced mindfulness or are a seasoned pro. \nCome to share this space of self-compassion and collective support. We look forward to seeing you there! \nThis moment of serenity will be facilitated Lisa Carmody\, Lisa is a Manager within C&I Wellbeing Partnerships\, of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. During her 19 years working in the NHS she has worked in various London NHS Trusts and in rural Dorset. Her main experience lies in working in Early Intervention in Psychosis in the community with young people and working on Research studies trialing psychological approaches to support people experiencing a range of mental health issues\, working closely with University College London. She has taken further training in Mindfulness\, Family interventions and it also a qualified Yoga teacher. \nThis KQ Mindful Moment will take place online through Microsoft Teams.
