DESCRIPTION:As part of London Data Week\, the Knowledge Quarter hosts an informal evening of data\, discussion and networking in partnership with UCL Grand Challenges.\n  \nLondon generates data about itself constantly – the question is what we do with it. \nFor our next KQ Social\, hosted in partnership with UCL Grand Challenges during London Data Week 2026\, we’re bringing together a cross-section of the city’s research\, innovation and policy communities to look at what the numbers are actually telling us about London right now. \nSome of it is striking. Nearly half of London’s workers are in roles where generative AI could automate a significant share of their tasks\, a figure well above the UK average. The cost of a nursery place in London runs around 44% higher than elsewhere in the country\, while a pint of milk costs roughly the same. And nearly half of all Londoners say they’d consider retraining for a ‘green’ job. \nThese aren’t just statistics. They’re signals about a city in transition: in how people work\, what they can afford\, and where they see opportunity. \nThe evening will be an informal space to connect with people working across these questions: from workforce and skills to urban sustainability and the economics of city life. As the built environment expands and London works towards net zero\, emissions and air pollution from construction continue to increase\, with significant consequences for local people. \n​This event challenges the narrative of growth. What if growth meant repairing instead of replacing\, working with what we already have\, and putting communities at the centre of change? \n​We’ll explore how retrofitting\, low-carbon design\, and care-centred planning can drive both climate action and social equity. At the Costume Designers Guild Awards 2008 and Costume Designers Guild Awards 2017\, she won Best Costume Design in a Fantasy Film for The Dark Knight and Wonder Woman\, respectively. \nVicki Mortimer is a renowned British designer who has designed for a large range of theatre\, opera and ballet productions. She won Best Designer in the 2017 Critics Circle Awards\, followed by an Olivier for costume design in 2018\, both for Follies. \nAbout RADA\nThe Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) are dedicated to world-leading training in the dramatic arts. SUMMARY:Writing Women: reviving Kana Shodo (‘Woman-Hand’)\, a forgotten female script
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Writing Day\, the Book and Print Initiative at the Institute of English Studies\, School of Advanced Study\, has invited Kaoru Akagawa\, designated Master of Japanese calligraphy\, to tell the story of Kana Shodo\, which was developed and used by noblewomen to express themselves freely within the constraints of 10th-century Japanese court life. Kaoru Akagawa keeps it alive today through a calligraphic technique she created to revive these ancient Kana characters for modern times.\nThis free evening at London’s Senate House\, where Kaoru Akagawa will also offer a live demonstration\, is a rare opportunity to see an ancient female script created mainly by and for woman – come to life! It is an official event of the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020. \nThis event is free but you must register your attendance here.
