SUMMARY:KQ CONNECT: Private View of 'A Silk Road Oasis' at the British Library
DESCRIPTION:Join the KQ for a private curator talk about the British Library’s current exhibition A Silk Road Oasis: Life in Ancient Dunhuang. \nSign up to the private view here.\n  \nWith the world’s earliest complete printed book with a date to the earliest known manuscript atlas of the night sky\, we will travel back in time to more than 1\,000 years ago to discover the stories of diverse Dunhuang and its people. \nLike the Knowledge Quarter\, Dunhuang hosted a melting pot of multiple languages\, faiths and cultures and facilitated the free exchange of ideas\, technologies and art. \nThis KQ CONNECT event features an exclusive talk led by Kitty Liu\, the exhibition’s project curator. The talk will begin at 08:45. There will be time before and after to enjoy the exhibit and mingle with fellow KQ community members. \nMore about the exhibition\nThe oasis of Dunhuang\, at the edge of the Gobi Desert\, was once a bustling town on the famous Silk Road connecting China and the Mediterranean. Discover the personal stories of those who lived\, travelled through\, worked\, and worshipped here more than 1\,000 years ago. Explore an astonishing time capsule that opens windows onto the intimate worlds of artists and scribes\, merchants and fortune-tellers\, diplomats\, Buddhists and nuns. \nNamed “Blazing Beacon” after the watchtowers along its walls\, Dunhuang was once a vital meeting point at the gateway to China. The routes that converged here ran through Constantinople in the West and Japan in the East. But there was more to this verdant oasis than trade. For over 1\,000 years\, Dunhuang was also an important pilgrimage site\, a cultural melting pot where ideas\, technologies and art flowed freely. \nThis exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the ordinary lives of people long ago through the remarkable contents of the Library Cave\, part of the Buddhist cave complex of Mogao\, where a wealth of manuscripts\, documents and artworks remained sealed for nearly 900 years. Detailing life in and around Dunhuang during the first millennium CE\, the documents include personal letters and wills encompassing multiple languages\, faiths and cultures including Buddhism\, Zoroastrianism\, Manichaeism and Christianity; and span topics as diverse as literature\, astronomy\, medicine\, politics and art. \nRead more about the exhibition here. \nAbout the curator (and our guide)\nKitty Liu joined the Library as project curator for the exhibition A Silk Road Oasis: Life in Ancient Dunhuang. With a lifelong passion for museums and cultural heritage\, Kitty specializes in the preservation and study of ancient Chinese architecture. She began her career as a heritage consultant before spending five years curating exhibitions and managing collections in museum settings\, honing her skills in presenting cultural treasures to the public. \nWhat is KQ CONNECT?\nKQ CONNECT is our networking event series that brings KQ colleagues together across our diverse range of partner institutions. Join us for a series of private views of exhibitions and summer walking tours of our vibrant local area. DESCRIPTION:Sign up via Eventbrite here \nExtraordinary Stories from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology \nThis Virtual Private View\, brought to you by the UCL Petrie Museum\, will launch the Museum’s brand new entrance gallery and tell the story of the cast of characters who were influential in creating the museum including: \nAmelia Edwards\, Victorian writer and journalist who donated her collections and library along with funding to establish the first Chair in Egyptology in the UK\, choosing UCL because it was the only university at the time to offer degrees to women. \nAli Suefi\, the head-overseer of many teams of Egyptian ‘Quftis’ working to excavate Egyptian archaeological sites for Western researchers. \nViolette LaFleur\, UCL conservation student and volunteer\, who almost single-handedly saved the collection from the World War Two bombs that destroyed her own home. \nAnd of course\, William Matthew Flinders Petrie; pioneer archaeologist and ‘father of pots’\, with a complex legacy of eugenics research. \nJoin the curator\, Dr Anna Garnett\, and head of collection\, Catriona Wilson\, in this behind-the-scenes look at the Museum and the untold stories behind its formation\, as well an exclusive preview of the hidden love story behind a newly acquired Pre-Raphaelite pencil sketch on display for the first time. \nAbout the Petrie Museum: \nFree to visit\, the Petrie Museum is home to one of the most significant collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology in the world. This extraordinary collection tells the stories of the lives of ordinary people who lived along the Nile Valley thousands of years ago. Inside you’ll find papyrus and stone fragments inscribed with hieroglyphs; musical instruments and children’s toys; thousands of beads and amulets; ancient mummy cases and the treasures buried with them for the afterlife; and the oldest woven garment in the world: the Tarkhan Dress. \nIt is named after William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942)\, appointed in 1892 as first UCL Edwards Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology. Over three-quarters of the material comes from excavations directed or funded by Petrie\, or from purchases he made for university teaching. \nThe new entrance gallery was funded by the DCMS Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund. \n  \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: The Great Train Robbery
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets via Eventbrite here. \nThe Great Train Robbery: Crime & The Post \nThis exclusive private view event will offer Knowledge Quarter staff an opportunity to explore one of the most audacious crimes of the 20th Century and the subsequent investigation\, alongside other stories of crime through the post. \nRevisit The Great Train Robbery and unearth the role of the Post Office’s own investigation department in piecing together this and other crimes\, shedding light on the human stories of the victims through never before seen artefacts\, objects and personal accounts. \nThe Great Train Robbery: Crime and the Post has been two years in the making and uncovers over 150 objects\, recordings and films\, some of which are displayed for the very first time.\nThe exhibition traces the history of the Post Office Investigation Branch\, the oldest criminal investigation service in the world\, established in 1683. The most high-profile crime investigated by the Investigation Branch is perhaps the most notorious crime in British history: The Great Train Robbery.\nThe exhibition tell the story of the robbery through its victims’ witness statements and trace the efforts made by the Investigation Branch to identify those involved and find the money. The exhibition asks visitors to question the enduring legacy of the crime: why is the public so fascinated by criminal activity and why have the criminals themselves been elevated to cult status?\nThis Private View is presented in partnership with The Postal Museum. We will be taken on a virtual tour by Andy Richmond (Head of Exhibitions\, Access and Learning)\, Joanna Espin (Curator)\, and Gavin McGuffie (Senior Archivist). \n  \nAbout The Postal Museum\nThe Postal Museum reveals the surprising and fascinating story of the first social network and makes our extraordinary collections available and enjoyable for all.\nUltimately\, behind The Postal Museum lies the Postal Heritage Trust\, an independent charity created to protect and share this rich history. The Trust and the Museum are an ambitious\, forward-thinking institution with an amazing story to tell. \nOur Virtual Events\nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. To ensure you are able to join the event\, please ‘arrive’ (via the link sent through Eventbrite ) around 5 minutes before the start.
