SUMMARY:KQ Private View: The World of Stonehenge
DESCRIPTION:Book via Eventbrite here.\n\nJoin the KQ for this in person Private View\, in collaboration with the British Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformed by ground-breaking recent archaeological and scientific discoveries\, this landmark exhibition offers new insight on one of the world’s great wonders\, bringing the true story of Stonehenge into sharper focus than ever before. \nIn this special private view of their blockbuster exhibition\, the British Museum will reveal the secrets of Stonehenge\, shining a light on its purpose\, cultural power and the people that created it. \nFollowing the story of Britain and Europe from 4000 to 1000 BC\, you’ll learn about the restless and highly connected age of Stonehenge – a period of immense transformation and radical ideas that changed society forever. \nThe human story behind the stones reveals itself through a variety of fascinating objects. Among these are stone axes from the North Italian Alps\, stunning gold jewellery and astonishing examples of early metalwork including the Nebra Sky Disc – the world’s oldest surviving map of the stars. A remarkably preserved 4\,000-year-old timber circle dubbed Seahenge also takes centre stage in the show\, on loan for the very first time. All these objects offer important clues about the beliefs\, rituals\, and complex worldview of Neolithic people\, helping to build a vivid sense of life for Europe’s earliest ancestors. \nAbout The British Museum \nThe British Museum was founded in 1753 and opened its doors in 1759. It was the first national museum to cover all fields of human knowledge\, open to visitors from across the world. \nEnlightenment ideals and values – critical scrutiny of all assumptions\, open debate\, scientific research\, progress and tolerance – have marked the Museum since its foundation. \nThe Museum is driven by an insatiable curiosity for the world\, a deep belief in objects as reliable witnesses and documents of human history\, sound research\, as well as the desire to expand and share knowledge. \n\n\nOur Private Views:  \nThis KQ’s Private View will take place in person at the British Museum. Once you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive instructions to find the venue by email 48 hrs before the event. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with Mia (mia.johnson@bl.uk) \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? SUMMARY:KQ Private View: Slade 150
DESCRIPTION:Book via Eventbrite here.  \nKQ Private View: Slade 150 \nWhile we have to take a break from our in-person private views\, we are working with curators to bring the KQ’s cultural offering to the digital realm! Join us at 3pm on Wednesday 9th March for an online experience brought to you by the UCL Slade School of Fine Art and UCL Culture. \nThis year\, the Slade is celebrating 150 years of fine art teaching and research. From Stanley Spencer and Chila Kumari Burman to Rachel Whiteread and Michael Armitage\, Slade School of Fine Art has educated and trained generations of world-renowned artists since 1871. \nCurators\, Staff and Students from the Slade will offer an exclusive virtual Private View for the Knowledge Quarter\, showcasing their current artist-led exhibition SLADE 150: PAST\, PRESENT\, FUTURE. Students on programmes from BA to PhD level\, across all artistic disciplines\, explore ideas of tradition and heritage\, and ask how new generations can challenge and disrupt these. \nThe Private View will also showcase their parallel exhibition TESTING GROUND at the UCL Art Museum\, and PRINT PALS: THEN AND NOW – a print collaboration between the Slade and the National College of the Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, Pakistan. \n  \nAbout our speakers: \nNina Pearlman\, PhD\, is Head of UCL Art Collections at UCL. She works collaboratively at the intersection of research\, curating\, collecting\, arts management\, arts policy and innovation. She established Curating Equality at UCL\, a virtual platform for projects with UCL Art Collections that employ a collaborative\, interdisciplinary and poly-systems approach to gender equity in the arts and is a co-researcher on The Sloane Lab: Looking back to build future shared collections\, a multi-partner project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council under the Towards a National Collection programme. Pearlman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, board member of Craftspace\, and co-producer of the Women to Watch project for UK Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. \n\nAbi Ola is an MFA Fine Art 2021 graduate in the area of painting. She works with painting\, collage\, screen printing\, photography and performance. Combining autobiographical and collective histories she takes inspiration from old family clothes\, nature\, and tribal art as well as African and Oceanic textiles. Through the original patterns that emerge she seeks to represent her West African heritage and her life in the UK. Ola intentionally obscures the identities of the figures in her work to allow the audience to place themselves or their loved ones within the images she creates. Ola is one of two 2021 UCL East student artists in residence. \nInstagram – @abiolaartist & Twitter – @AbiOlaArtist \n\nLícia Santos is in the final year of her MFA in Fine Art in the area of painting. Her practice explores the body and nature through drawing\, painting and performance\, often drawing on her mixed Angolan and Portuguese heritage. Her work for Slade 150 engages for the first time with the practice of print\, making etchings based on life observations of her peers at the Slade. She is interested in how spaces influence the creative process and how artists find refuge in these and consequently in each other. In 2020 she graduated from Goldsmiths College\, was Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year series 7 and received the Slade’s Euan Uglow scholarship. In the year of her graduation from Goldsmiths College in 2020 she was recipient of the Slade’s 2020 Euan Uglow scholarship and participant in Sky Arts Portrait of the Year. \nInstagram: @licia_santos \n\nKorallia Stergides is in her final year of the MFA Fine Art in the area of media. She is an interdisciplinary artist based between London and Cyprus working with performance\, installation and media. Stergides interweaves autobiographical narrative into her work that explores the vital politics of care in an interdependent world and emphasises nonhuman agencies. Moments of public gestures of care toward nonhumans imprinted in public spaces and buildings hold particular interest. Her work for Slade 150 introduces for the first time object making alongside drawing and sound\, and takes as its focus the stray cat that transitions between its role as domestic and public ‘pet. \nInstagram: @aillarok \n  \nAbout Slade School of Fine Art at UCL \nSince its foundation in 1871\, following a bequest to UCL from Felix Slade\, the School has been a leader in fine art education\, fostering innovative\, interdisciplinary artistic and art research cultures. Its multiple histories have transformed art education\, research\, and practice\, both in the past and present\, nationally and internationally. \n  \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. To ensure you are able to join the event\, please ‘arrive’ (via the link sent through Eventbrite) around 5 minutes before the start. This will ensure you are able to be let into the Zoom room before we reach full capacity. \nOnce you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive a Zoom link by email 48 hrs before\, 2 hrs before and 10 minutes before the event\, please check your JUNK folder for these emails as they are sent directly through Eventbrite’s system. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with Mia (mia.johnson@bl.uk) \nCan’t attend but want to receive invitations to future private views? SUMMARY:Income Inequality in the Knowledge Quarter
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets via Eventbrite here.  \n\n  \nIncome Inequality in the Knowledge Quarter \nAccording to the latest ONS Household Finances Survey\, the gap between the richest in society and the rest of the population has widened over the last 10 years. \nIslington has the 4th highest levels of income inequality in London\, and Camden is one of ten boroughs with the largest pay disparities – shockingly\, both boroughs have more than 1 in 3 children living in poverty (according to the most recent Trust For London Data). Across all UK regions\, the ethnicity pay gap was largest in London at 23.8% (ONS) and female employees were paid on average 16% less per hour than men in 2021 (London.Gov datastore). \nFor this special conference legacy event\, a panel of economists and policy experts will discuss the causes and impacts of pay and income inequality on KQ organisations and the area they call home. \nSo what steps can organisations take to tackle inequality within their own organisations? And how will these actions impact inequality across our area and beyond? \n  \nThis is a KQ conference legacy event\, brought to you in partnership with British Land. \n  \n\n\nOur Virtual Events:  \nThe KQ’s virtual events will take place via Zoom. You do not need to download Zoom software in order to participate – there is a web browser version which works perfectly well. Once you have signed up via Eventbrite you will receive a link by email 48 hrs before the event. \nIf you have any questions please get in touch with the KQ events manager Bhav (bhavit.mehta@bl.uk) or Mia (Mia.Johnson@bl.uk). \n\n

SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Joy and Tranquillity
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nThis Summer\, the Wellcome Collection launches On Happiness\, a season of free events\, activities and two exhibitions – Joy and Tranquillity – which bring together voices from across the cultural\, scientific and spiritual fields to reflect on the elusive subject of happiness. In this period of great instability\, escalating infectious diseases\, ecological concerns and rising levels of anxiety and depression worldwide\, Wellcome Collection examines the ways in which people find resilience\, hope and even joy at times of duress. In response to seismic political and social upheavals On Happiness asks; how might we rebuild happiness for our current times? \nJoin Wellcome Collection curators Laurie Britton Newell and George Vasey for this exclusive Virtual Private View of the joint exhibitions Joy and Tranquillity which consider different routes to experiencing these positive feelings. From the uplifting sensations of dancing and laughter to the calm of being in nature and diary writing\, the exhibitions consider the effects of emotion on our self and others. \nFrom serenity to ecstasy\, awe to comfort\, happiness encompasses many different feelings\, and has perplexed scholars for centuries. There has long been debate around the role of emotions\, where they come from and how they are expressed\, and whether they are innate or acquired\, universal or culturally specific. Reflecting on the connections between these complex emotions\, our bodies and health\, On Happiness offers audiences an opportunity to rethink how we feel good. \nNewly commissioned works and multi-sensory installations by contemporary artists including Jasleen Kaur\, Chrystel Lebas\, Harold Offeh\, Amalia Pica\, Stefanie Posavec and David Shrigley are on display alongside historic objects dating back to the 14th century from Wellcome’s collection. The exhibitions consider ideas from different schools of thought including neuroscience\, religion and psychotherapy offering a range of perspectives on the connections between emotions and health. \nImage credit: Joy Inside Our Tears\, 2021\, ©  Harold Offeh.\nProduction stills. SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: The Silk Road\, A Living History
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nThe Aga Khan Foundation UK present an an exclusive virtual private view of their open-air photography exhibition about the people\, places and cultures encountered across 17 countries between the UK and China along the ancient Silk Road. \nComprised of nearly 160 photographs mounted on 24 photo benches\, The Silk Road: A Living History invites the viewer to take a 40\,000km journey from London to Beijing. The exhibition documents an overland journey photographer Christopher Wilton-Steer undertook in 2019 following the historic trade route. \nThe show aims to celebrate the diversity of cultural expressions found along the route\, highlight examples of how historical practices\, rituals and customs live on today\, and also reveal some of the connections between what appear at first glance to be very different cultures. It also seeks to engender interest and understanding between distant cultures and challenge perceptions of less well known and understood parts of the world. Photographs from Iran\, Turkmenistan\, Uzbekistan\, Tajikistan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Pakistan\, India\, China and elsewhere will feature. Additionally\, the exhibition aims to raise awareness about AKDN’s contributions to improving the quality of life across social\, economic and cultural spheres in Central and South Asia as well as the Middle East. \nChristopher Wilton-Steer is a travel photographer and Head of Communications at Aga Khan Foundation UK. His professional and personal work take him to remote locations across Africa\, Asia and the Middle East. Through his photography\, he is interested in exploring less well documented and often misunderstood parts of the world in an effort to help demystify them and build bridges of interest and understanding between different cultures. Ultimately\, he wishes for his photographs to encourage others to take the road less travelled and explore\, experience and encounter new places\, people and cultures. His work has been featured in magazines and newspapers around the world including National Geographic\, The Guardian\, CNN\, Financial Times\, and Der Spiegel amongst others. \nPhoto credit © Christopher Wilton-Steer

SUMMARY:KQ Virtual Private View: Aby Warburg’s Bilderatlas Mnemosyne
DESCRIPTION:Book this event through Eventbrite here \nJoin the Director of the Warburg Institute\, Professor Bill Sherman\, and archivist Claudia Wedepohl\, in this exclusive showcase of the final and most unconventional project of Warburg’s lifetime. This Virtual Private View will bring together two exhibitions of Aby Warburg’s legendary Bilderatlas Mnemosyne\, revealing Warburg’s revolutionary understanding of art and cultural theory. \nFor the first time since 1929\, all 63 panels of Aby Warburg’s renowned Bilderatlas Mnemosyne have been reconstructed using Warburg’s original materials for display at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In a simultaneous exhibition at the Gemäldegalerie you can see some 50 original artworks in the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin chosen by Warburg for inclusion in his encyclopedic atlas of images. These two very special exhibitions\, taking place in Germany\, present the collection as close to the original as we will ever get to see in our lifetimes. \nIn collaboration with the Warburg Institute\, University of London\, the curators located most of the 971 illustrations from the 400\,000 objects in the Institute’s Photographic Collection and Library to display Warburg’s unfinished magnum opus in its entirety for the first time since his death. \nBill Sherman is the director of the Warburg Institute and professor in the History of the Book and Techniques of Scholarship. Sherman was founding director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the University of York\, and he moved to the Warburg from the Victoria and Albert Museum\, where he served as Director of Research and Collections and head of the V&A Research Institute (VARI). \nClaudia Wedepohl is the Archivist of the Warburg Institute. She has studied Art History and Italian Literature in Göttingen and Hamburg\, and joined the staff of the Warburg Institute in 2000. She held fellowships at the Center for Literary and Cultural Research in Berlin and at the Center for Advanced Studies\, Morphomata\, at the University of Cologne (2010-11). \nAbout the Warburg Institute:  \nFounded by Aby Warburg in Hamburg at the end of the nineteenth century and exiled from Germany in 1933\, the Warburg Institute attracted the greatest humanist scholars and philosophers of the time. The Warburg Institute quickly became one of the leading centres in Germany for the understanding of the interactions between images and society across time and space.  It transformed the histories of art\, literature\, and music\, and in emphasizing fields such as astrology and magic\, anticipated many of the developments in the modern understanding of the history of science. \nOur Virtual Events:  \nOur virtual events are becoming increasingly popular and often completely sell out. It will open its doors for a three-day popup in London’s Shoreditch on 8-10 August this summer. The Pertti’s Choice popup will showcase Finnish and British Outsider art\, alongside a vegan café with music performances and products available to buy. \nThe art element of the experience will include: \n\n\n\na VR exhibition\, Inside Outside Finland\, which takes the viewer to four Outsider art environments in Finland\nportraits by visual artist Tanya Raabe-Webber\,\ndrawings by Pertti Kurikka’s alter ego Kalevi Helvetti\nphotographs of Pertti Kurikka’s Name Day international tours.\n\n\n\nThe popup will see gigs by Kalevi Helvetti\, the groove jazz artist Kalle Salonen\, singer Eeva Lusenius\, Rudewolf\, DJ Miika and the Brighton band Zombie crash. \nThe team from Pertti’s Choice will be accompanied by staff members of the much loved IPI café in Helsinki’s Kallio district. Their mission will be to serve quality coffee\, while introducing a model for employing disabled people. \n“There is great interest in the UK towards the Finnish model\, and this popup aims to develop international networks of disabled people”\, says Emilie Gardberg\, director of the Finnish Institute in London. The institute is bringing the popup to London together with its partners. \nOne of the main aims of Pertti’s Choice is to create a model for facilitating the employment of disabled people in the cultural sector. At present\, artists’ earnings can affect benefits so a successful artist may even be in danger of losing their supported housing. The situation in Britain is similar\, and many activists in the sector are working to find a solution with models like Pertti’s Choice. \nFind out more here.\nAbout the Finnish Institute in London\nThe Finnish Institute in London is an expert on Finnish culture and society\, working in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The Institute supports the internationalisation of Finnish contemporary art and helps artists\, researchers and social and cultural actors to create international networks.
