SUMMARY:Knowledge Quarter Diversity Roundtable: Intersectionality in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Our Diversity Roundtable series is aimed at professionals actively working on improving diversity in their organisation. The next meeting in this series will explore the theme of intersectionality in the workplace.  \n What is intersectionality? \nThe term ‘Intersectionality’ was coined in 1989 by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw to describe how race\, class\, gender\, and other individual characteristics “intersect” with one another and overlap. A person with an intersectional identity can also be described as “standing in the middle of the road being hit by cars from many sides”. \nA gay man may have to deal with homophobia in the workplace. A black man may have to deal with racism in the workplace. But a black gay man will have to deal with homophobia and racism\, often at the same time. It is often the case that he will face racism inside the LGBT community and homophobia in the black community. Similarly\, a disabled lesbian Muslim will have to deal with ableism\, homophobia\, Islamophobia\, racism and sexism. \nHaving an intersectional identity often generates a feeling that someone does not completely belong in one group or another\, and can lead to isolation\, depression and other mental health issues. \nWhy attend this event?  \nWe hope this event will help KQ partners acknowledge intersectionality\, gain a better understanding of the terminology and explore how individuals and KQ organisations could create more inclusive environments where people with overlapping identities can succeed at all levels. \nWho should attend?  \nThis event is ideal for: \n– Senior management \n– HR and recruitment professionals \n– People representing BAME\, LGBTQ+ and similar networks \n– People developing diversity and inclusion strategies \n– Anyone who identifies themselves as having intersectional identities or wishes to learn more about this. \nDiversity Roundtables are held bi-annually. SUMMARY:Data Diversity in Research: A call to action for concrete solutions
DESCRIPTION:The data gap issue is not new\, as Caroline Criado Perez demonstrated in her recent book\, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ – from stab vests to medical trials – the “one-size-fits-men” approach puts lives at risk. \nIn a recent blog\, BenevolentAI described how in 1992 the dosage for insomnia medication Zolpidem was based on research made up of predominantly male test subjects. It was only after 700 reports of impaired driving and road accidents that dosage for women was reconsidered. Equally\, diversity from an ethnic perspective is underrepresented. In 2014\, 86% of the clinical trials participants are white according to a study published in Nature. This means that patients may experience different side-effects or may fail to respond to treatments altogether. \nA huge part of the population is still left out of research\, yet\, we are living in an age of great innovation. New technologies are empowering scientists and researchers with previously unimaginable capabilities\, enabling greater discoveries. Playwright\, novelist\, critic\, broadcaster and former British Museum Trustee\, Bonnie is passionate about making positive change in the museum sector. Bonnie’s keynote address will be followed by over 35 different sessions\, led by speakers and contributors from across the UK. \nThis event is open to anyone working in or with museums: museum professionals\, representatives of sector bodies\, community partner organisations and people working in the arts\, cultural heritage and creative industries with a relevance to the museum sector\, and others working in these fields including charities and third-sector organisations\, freelance practitioners\, artists\, activists\, funders\, academics and early-career scholars.
