This masterclass will help you understand how stress impacts our mental and physical health and wellbeing and will also give you some tips on how to have a helpful conversation with your colleagues and manager about managing stress. We will also have a think about what we can do to help break the cycle of stress\, and prevent this from becoming a more serious issue\, such as anxiety or depression.  \nThis masterclass will be facilitated Lisa Carmody\, Lisa is a Manager within C&I Wellbeing Partnerships\, of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. Lisa is a qualified Mental Health Nurse\, completing her training in 2003 at City University London. During her 19 years working in the NHS she has worked in various London NHS Trusts and in rural Dorset. Her main experience lies in working in Early Intervention in Psychosis in the community with young people and working on Research studies trialling psychological approaches to support people experiencing a range of mental health issues\, working closely with University College London. Examining over a century of mainstream comics\, graphic novels and sequential art from around the world\, Superheroes\, Orphans & Origins: 125 years in comics explores the challenging origins and complex identities of some of the most popular figures in comics. \nThe exhibition looks beyond the traditional ‘superhero’ genre to explore characters from early newspaper comic strips\, including Skeezix from Gasoline Alley\, who was left on a doorstep in 1921\, and Little Orphan Annie. DESCRIPTION:Book tickets via Eventbrite here.  \n\n  \nIncome Inequality in the Knowledge Quarter \nAccording to the latest ONS Household Finances Survey\, the gap between the richest in society and the rest of the population has widened over the last 10 years. \nIslington has the 4th highest levels of income inequality in London\, and Camden is one of ten boroughs with the largest pay disparities – shockingly\, both boroughs have more than 1 in 3 children living in poverty (according to the most recent Trust For London Data). Across all UK regions\, the ethnicity pay gap was largest in London at 23.8% (ONS) and female employees were paid on average 16% less per hour than men in 2021 (London.Gov datastore). \nFor this special conference legacy event\, a panel of economists and policy experts will discuss the causes and impacts of pay and income inequality on KQ organisations and the area they call home. \nSo what steps can organisations take to tackle inequality within their own organisations? DESCRIPTION:** POSTPONEMENT NOTICE ** \n\nWe’ve had some feedback ahead of our event\, and it has become apparent that many people are unable to attend the event due to their caring responsibilities and the format and timing of the event (school pick-ups).  \nIn light of this\, we’ve decided to postpone this event to the new year. We really feel this subject is of great importance and relevance to staff members across the Knowledge Quarter and hence we’ll move it to a date and time that’s more accessible for staff who are carers. We apologise for the oversight in our part and any inconvenience caused to you.  \nBhavit Mehta \nEvents Manager\, Knowledge Quarter \n\n\nBook tickets through Eventbrite here. \nThis event will be part of our wellbeing special interest group series\, open to all KQ staff. This meeting will bring together people who are interested in practises that can improve and support the wellbeing of staff with caring responsibilities in the KQ. \nAcross the UK today\, 6.5 million people are carers\, supporting a loved one who is older\, disabled or seriously ill (Carers UK). 1.3 million people provide over 50 hours of unpaid care per week. Furthermore\, in 2020 the rate of children under 18 years in care went up to 67 out of 10\,000 (up from 60 in 2015) (CORAM). Every day another 6\,000 people take on a caring responsibility in the UK. \nAlthough caring can have many positive and rewarding aspects\, there are lots of reasons why caring can have an impact on your day to day life\, and why you may need support. This event aims to address some of the issues around this theme\, considering flexible working policies\, sign posting local expertise on caring\, and how KQ partners may be able to share best practise and support each other. \nOur Hybrid Events:  \nThe KQ’s Hybrid events will take place simultaneously in-person and via Zoom. \nThere will be two options when selecting to book a ticket: In-Person and Virtual. DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Quarter staff and friends are welcome to join our private evening view of Writing in Times of Conflict at Univeristy of London’s Senate House Library. Enjoy privileged out-of-hours access to the exhibition in the company of lovely\, like-minded individuals living and working in the Knowledge Quarter. \nThe exhibition begins in 1919 just after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles marked the formal end of the First World War\, which led to the establishment of contemporary peace movements. It explores some of the most significant military\, environmental and economic conflicts that ensued right up until 2019\, touching on current political issues such as Brexit\, economic inequality\, and climate change. \nThere are many bold stories by well-known writers on display. These include one of the first editions of John Maynard Keynes’ The Economic Consequences of the Peace\, a rare signed copy of in our time by Ernest Hemingway\, a letter from Virginia Woolf describing the WWII bombers flying overhead\, and a first edition of Carol Ann Duffy’s thought-provoking play My Country: a Work in Progress. These are complemented by unique photographs and documents\, such as one of the few surviving photostatic copies of the ‘Nazi Black Book’ written in 1940\, listing peace activists and politicians to be targeted by the Gestapo. \nTold through Senate House Library’s global collections\, Writing in Times of Conflict combines a selection of narratives by writers\, journalists\, politicians and local communities from Africa\, Latin America and Europe. \nBook your tickets here

DESCRIPTION:Our Diversity Roundtable series is aimed at professionals actively working on improving diversity in their organisation. The next meeting in this series will explore the theme of intersectionality in the workplace.  \n What is intersectionality? \nThe term ‘Intersectionality’ was coined in 1989 by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw to describe how race\, class\, gender\, and other individual characteristics “intersect” with one another and overlap. A person with an intersectional identity can also be described as “standing in the middle of the road being hit by cars from many sides”. \nA gay man may have to deal with homophobia in the workplace. A black man may have to deal with racism in the workplace. But a black gay man will have to deal with homophobia and racism\, often at the same time. It is often the case that he will face racism inside the LGBT community and homophobia in the black community. Similarly\, a disabled lesbian Muslim will have to deal with ableism\, homophobia\, Islamophobia\, racism and sexism. \nHaving an intersectional identity often generates a feeling that someone does not completely belong in one group or another\, and can lead to isolation\, depression and other mental health issues. \nWhy attend this event?  \nWe hope this event will help KQ partners acknowledge intersectionality\, gain a better understanding of the terminology and explore how individuals and KQ organisations could create more inclusive environments where people with overlapping identities can succeed at all levels. \nWho should attend?  \nThis event is ideal for: \n– Senior management \n– HR and recruitment professionals \n– People representing BAME\, LGBTQ+ and similar networks \n– People developing diversity and inclusion strategies \n– Anyone who identifies themselves as having intersectional identities or wishes to learn more about this. \nDiversity Roundtables are held bi-annually. SUMMARY:Data Diversity in Research: A call to action for concrete solutions
DESCRIPTION:The data gap issue is not new\, as Caroline Criado Perez demonstrated in her recent book\, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ – from stab vests to medical trials – the “one-size-fits-men” approach puts lives at risk. \nIn a recent blog\, BenevolentAI described how in 1992 the dosage for insomnia medication Zolpidem was based on research made up of predominantly male test subjects. It was only after 700 reports of impaired driving and road accidents that dosage for women was reconsidered. Equally\, diversity from an ethnic perspective is underrepresented. In 2014\, 86% of the clinical trials participants are white according to a study published in Nature. This means that patients may experience different side-effects or may fail to respond to treatments altogether. \nA huge part of the population is still left out of research\, yet\, we are living in an age of great innovation. New technologies are empowering scientists and researchers with previously unimaginable capabilities\, enabling greater discoveries. The conference will explore equality and diversity in museum practice across the UK – highlighting issues of representation\, authority and power with particular focus on disability\, class\, gender\, race and sexuality.\nBonnie Greer has recently been announced as the keynote speaker. Playwright\, novelist\, critic\, broadcaster and former British Museum Trustee\, Bonnie is passionate about making positive change in the museum sector. Bonnie’s keynote address will be followed by over 35 different sessions\, led by speakers and contributors from across the UK. \nThis event is open to anyone working in or with museums: museum professionals\, representatives of sector bodies\, community partner organisations and people working in the arts\, cultural heritage and creative industries with a relevance to the museum sector\, and others working in these fields including charities and third-sector organisations\, freelance practitioners\, artists\, activists\, funders\, academics and early-career scholars. DESCRIPTION:Concluding the festival of Sukkot\, Simchat Torah is a joyous festival to celebrate the Torah.\nEach Sabbath\, a portion of the Torah is read throughout the year and this yearly cycle ends on the last day of Sukkot when the last portion of the outgoing year\, followed by the first portion of the new cycle are being read.
