SUMMARY:A Secret Beauty: The Spirit of Japanese Maki-e (11 July - 21 September)
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of the Lacquer Work of Koyanagi Tanekuni.\nLacquer has been used in Japan for almost 10\,000 years to protect and decorate objects\, such as wood\, bamboo\, earthenware\, and textiles.  Its resistance to moisture and degradation make it a useful coating for utensils\, storage containers\, furniture\, sculpture and wooden architecture. \nAs a decorative medium\, lacquer has had a high status in Japan.  The lacquerware decorated in gold and silver particles known as makie\, which was first introduced in the 8th century\, is a culmination of Japanese aesthetic sensibility and purity.  The value and prestige of lacquerware is shown by the status of its patrons\, which included emperors\, nobilities\, shoguns and daimyos. \nFind out more here.\nAbout Koyanagi Tanekuni\nThe artist\, Koyanagi Tanekuni studied makie and Japanese aesthetics under three holders of the title Ningen kokukō (‘Intangible Cultural Property’ also known as ‘Living National Treasure’). As a renowned makie artist for the past 50 years\, Koyanagi has been a regular exhibitor at the “Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition”\, as well as contributing works to many group and one-man exhibitions. He has also actively been involved in the conservation and preservation of national cultural properties and treasures in Japan\, such as the preservation of the Chuson-ji temple\, a UNESCO World Heritage site.   For half a century\, he has produced both traditional and contemporary lacquer work maintaining the highest technical and artistic standards. \nAbout the Brunei Gallery\nThe Brunei Gallery is an exciting venue in central London that hosts a programme of changing contemporary and historical exhibitions from Asia\, Africa and the Middle East. The Gallery’s aim is to present and promote cultures from these regions and to be a student resource and public facility.

SUMMARY:Pertti’s Choice popup
DESCRIPTION:Pertin Valinta\, or Pertti’s Choice in English\, is Finland’s first social enterprise owned by people with learning disabilities.\nIt was founded by the members of the punk band Pertti Kurikka’s Name Day to support the careers of disabled artists. It will open its doors for a three-day popup in London’s Shoreditch on 8-10 August this summer. The Pertti’s Choice popup will showcase Finnish and British Outsider art\, alongside a vegan café with music performances and products available to buy. \nThe art element of the experience will include: \n\n\n\na VR exhibition\, Inside Outside Finland\, which takes the viewer to four Outsider art environments in Finland\nportraits by visual artist Tanya Raabe-Webber\,\ndrawings by Pertti Kurikka’s alter ego Kalevi Helvetti\nphotographs of Pertti Kurikka’s Name Day international tours.\n\n\n\nThe popup will see gigs by Kalevi Helvetti\, the groove jazz artist Kalle Salonen\, singer Eeva Lusenius\, Rudewolf\, DJ Miika and the Brighton band Zombie crash. \nThe team from Pertti’s Choice will be accompanied by staff members of the much loved IPI café in Helsinki’s Kallio district. Their mission will be to serve quality coffee\, while introducing a model for employing disabled people. \n“There is great interest in the UK towards the Finnish model\, and this popup aims to develop international networks of disabled people”\, says Emilie Gardberg\, director of the Finnish Institute in London. The institute is bringing the popup to London together with its partners. \nOne of the main aims of Pertti’s Choice is to create a model for facilitating the employment of disabled people in the cultural sector. At present\, artists’ earnings can affect benefits so a successful artist may even be in danger of losing their supported housing. The situation in Britain is similar\, and many activists in the sector are working to find a solution with models like Pertti’s Choice. \nFind out more here.\nAbout the Finnish Institute in London\nThe Finnish Institute in London is an expert on Finnish culture and society\, working in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The Institute supports the internationalisation of Finnish contemporary art and helps artists\, researchers and social and cultural actors to create international networks.
