Film: SOAS move into Senate House by Professor Trevor Marchand

In 2016 Senate House North Block will open, creating a single unified campus for SOAS, University of London. As they extend into one of London’s iconic sites, SOAS will be celebrating the start of their second century in a campus fit for a prestigious university of the 21st Century.

Senate House is situated at the western end of SOAS’ vibrant precinct. The redevelopment of the North Block of the building will extend SOAS’ central-London campus, creating spaces that facilitate both formal and informal teaching and learning. The development will include a new Student Hub including accommodation, course registration, student finance, careers and enterprise services.

Trevor Marchand, SOAS Professor of Social Anthropology, explores the new development in the light of his research into labour and craft in Yemen and Mali. The film’s soundtrack was recorded in Mali by Dr Lucy Duran, Senior Lecturer in African Music. Keep watching after the credits to see a clip of the performers, Daniel Dembele and Waly Coulibaly. The move into Senate House unites SOAS’ campus around one vibrant precinct and creates fantastic teaching and learning spaces for languages, arts, humanities, social sciences and law.
