Living Proust and the belle époque

11 05 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

The School of Advanced Study at the University of London are holding their annual Living Literature event on 11 May, at Senate House, 18.30 – 22.00.

They have an amazing array of programming lined up for the evening, recreating Proust’s classic novel ‘In Search of Lost Time’. Surrounded by the aromas, fashions and music of the belle époque, feast on food inspired by the novel. Enjoy our magic lantern show, learn about memory in our scent experiments, listen to live classical music of the time including a performance of Proust’s fictional Vinteuil Sonata, read about the author’s literary and artistic influences and learn about Proust in our series of interactive pop-up talks. Highlights include:

  • A Proustian magic lantern show, by performers Mirror Mirror
  • Memory experiments from Professor Barry Smith and the Centre for the Study of the Senses
  • Historical perfumier Sarah McCartney from 4160 Tuesdays will explore the scents of the Belle Époque
  • An intimate performance of Proust’s fictional Vinteuil Sonata, as well as other classical composers from the era.

All this plus linden tea cocktails, a themed menu of Proustian food and a chance to listen to readings and pop-up talks, learn about love, jealousy, queer identity, art, society and politics during the French fin de siècle.

Knowledge Quarter partners are entitled to a 25% discount on Standard Tickets, which can be bought through this link. The ticket includes access to all the spaces and two free drinks on entry, as well as our Proustian canapé selection of French delicacies.

Cost: £30.00 for Knowledge Quarter partners
