In response to the tragic loss and ongoing threat to the cultural heritage of the Middle East through destruction, looting, and illegal resale, and firmly believing in the educational, social, and economic benefits created by access to cultural material. The Digital Library of the Middle East (DLME) at The Aga Khan University will bring together a publicly available, online platform for noteworthy Middle Eastern collections from around the world.

Committed to international cooperation in the region and around the world, we propose a discussion that outlines the platform, the creation process, and the importance of collaboration. We are focused on how the DLME can serve the many communities of interest, from advanced scholars to schoolchildren. In addition, we will provide a coherent approach to the cataloguing, description, documentation, and digitization of hidden collections, including providing funding for that critical task.

The talk is to introduce the Digital Library of the Middle East to collaborators in the local community; we propose a presentation by DLME Co-Founders Charles Henry of the Council on Library and Information Resources and Peter Herdrich of the Antiquities Coalition at the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations. An invited audience of interested library, museum, archive, and scholarly professionals would convene to hear about and offer comment on the DLME.
